12/6: Update on ex-93er Kaedy Kiely
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kaedy Kiely spent 22-plus years as a popular jock on 96rock and Z93. She was let go when Z93 switched to Dave FM in early summer 2004.
Besides voiceover work (not locally), Kaedy said she has three partners in a startup company called Viva Horchata, a Mexican nonalcoholic rice-based drink. “It’s about to take flight,” she said. Two partners used to work with Coke. “It takes like melted vanilla ice cream but more refreshing,” she said. “It’s very sweet.”
“It’s something totally different and exciting,” she added. She has four brothers in the food and beverage industry.
Does she miss radio? “If the situation came up and was ideal, I’d love to be back into it. At the same time, that’s not where I am. This is a different time of my life. I’m looking forward, not backwards.”

I have been in Atlanta since 1980 and always liked listening to Kaedy - one of the best jocks around, male or female. Wish Z had kept her rather than Mara Davis, whose style I really dislike. At the same time, as an ex-radio personality myself (since 1989), I completely understand that there is “life after radio” and lots of other things in the world to do. Even so, radio gets in your blood once you’ve been in it and you never feel completely divorced from that world; I’m sure Kaedy keeps up with her many radio contacts as well and has great memories - she was with 96, especially, during its best years!

Glad Kaedy Kiely has successfully moved on to other positive doings. And I hate to hear anyone diss Mara Davis, because she is a cool woman who is not only great on the air, but does a lot of wonderful community work. Mara rocks!

Glad to hear Kaedy is doing fine. But for us “real Atlantians”, I’d like to know where Ed Shane is? In the 60’s and 70’s, WPLO-FM was Rock. Ed also MC’d at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970 in Byron. Anyone know if he’s even still alive?

Kaedy was always great. Also, who can forget Jim Morrison (Midnight Snack on the old WQXI-FM now called Star-94). And I STILL miss Chris Rude on 96 (yes, I know he’s on the sports AM station, but it’s not the same…).
One more blast from the past….”Skinny” Bobby Harper and one of the alltime great Atlanta DJ’s…Gary McKee!

I worked with Kaedy at 96rock from 1990-1995, and I can tell you she was always a first-class person. Very nice, and someone who really cared about her listeners and fans. She also knew everything about rock, and had interviewed just about everyone in rock music at one time or another. I am glad to hear that she is happy and productive. Atlanta radio lost a bit of it’s soul when Kaedy left the air.

Unfortunately I believe Skinny Bobby Harper died a few years ago. Gary McKee was at our 30th high school reunion in 1999. If you go waaay back, try Rod Roddy on 590am in 1963. That’s push-button, knob-turning, static-producing aplitude modulation for those of you who only knew clear FM radio signals. There ain’t nothing like trying to listen to “Quixie in Dixie” on a stormy summer night in Atlanta.

I remember Kaedy Kiely and I’m glad she’s been able to move on. While we’re on the subject of radio personalities from back-in-the-day, how about the music. How can Atlanta advertise itself as a modern city and still not have a radio station that plays 60’s and 70’s “oldies”. Sorry, but not everyone likes Rock.

yes - where is the good old 60’s-70’s music? If you listen to 96rock - you get the rude and crude regular guys in the a.m. who do not how to play music, just constant garbage talk. We definately need a new station. - Shame on Randy & Spiff.

The people who grew up listening to rock in the 60s & 70s - me and a whole bunch of other baby boomers - are not considered a desirable demographic by advertisers anymore, and therefore not by radio stations who rely on those advertiser dollars…therefore no station is going to play “our” music (although fortunately a lot of us have wide-ranging musical tastes) and risk not getting the advertising bucks. Bottom line is that companies are in the radio business to make $$$!

Shame on Randy and Spiff - what did they do? They got fired by a loser station that is now losing even more by playing lousy rap and not paying anyone to spin it! was that the weekend whistle on 94Q? I remember that…and I miss music in the mornings too. Not privy to inside info or Arbitron ratings anymore, but you can bet that’s what’s driving the talkfest. That, plus the “monkey-see, monkey-do” effect - one station has a ratings success with morning talk and they all jump on the bandwagon. Just like TV - look at all the “Desperate Housewives” rip-offs!

I stopped listening to Z93 when it went DaveFM (WTF??) and cut a lot of people including Kaedy. It’s sad that only “classic rock”ish station in ATL is 96 now. And they play Black Crowes! It’s barely rock, let alone classic.
But now, with ipods and other mp3 players, who needs radio anymore. If not for sports radio AM and NPR, I wouldn’t miss radio at all.

Kaedy was awesome on 96ROCK, especially in the early to mid-80s. I used to call in to wish her a happy birthday every year because we share the same birthday, which was last week. Kaedy, if you read this, hope you had a nice one! She was also good on Z93, but I won’t say Mara is bad because I like her, too. Radio in Atlanta is in a sad state. There isn’t enough diversity these days on the airwaves.

I miss Kaedy a lot. Her knowledge of rock is encyclopedic and her passion for it is unsurpassed. I loved her evening program (can’t remember the exact name), Favorite Album Side, which played a listener’s favorite 5-6 songs, kinda like Dave-on-Demand with Eric now. It was an hour, though. She has a great voice and warm personality, and we’re poorer without her. Perhaps those of us who miss her have gone the way of the concept “album side.”

“Class Act” accurately describes Kaedy. I met her in the early 80’s when I attended a video broadcast of David Bowie’s Blue Jean tour at the Limelight (how’s that for way back?). We played a game of Ms. Pac Man and Kaedy had none of the overblown ego that some DJs tend to exhibit. Very cool, very down to earth. DAVE’s loss, and unfortunately, ours too. And that’s AtlantAN, not AtlantIan (This isn’t Atlantis)!

Juice,
You’ve hit the nail on the head, but not the way you think.
“But now, with ipods and other mp3 players, who needs radio anymore. If not for sports radio AM and NPR, I wouldn’t miss radio at all.”
The demographic that Clear Channel and all the others want to get to (Excluding Latinos) DON”T CARE ABOUT RADIO!
People 40 and up LIKE what radio used to be: Live announcers, obnoxius call letter jingles, stupid commercials for the muffler barn, Trixie’s diner, ad nauseum, with “stacks and stacks of wax and wax!”
Radio suits chase markets that don’t want radio, while they ignore the market that does.

I moved from Atlanta in 1999. I visit a couple of times a year and one of the most striking changes in Atlanta radio has been the constant changes in formats. Let’s face it…Atlanta radio sucks in a massive way.
I’m 33, grew up in Atlanta and listened to every station from Z-93 to 99X (back when it actually was a GOOD station) and even V-103 (god bless the “free money kitty”). Now, with the exception of an old college friend and former radio co-worker, Tripp West on Star 94, there is absolutely nothing decent to find on the air. I have fond memories of Gary McKee, Randy and Spiff, Larry “The Night Train” Lane, Mara Davis. Hell, I even listened to the Greaseman when he was on…There was a station for every musical taste…AC, Classic Rock, Hip-Hop, easy listening, Altenative. Now it’s all garbage. Damn Shame.
I’m astounded that Steve and Vicki are still on the air. Do they still suck?

The answer to “where is the music today” question is XM and Serrius. Until you subscribe (which I do) you don’t know how much music you really miss.
Additionally, if you will scroll for 10 seconds on the 60’s, then 70’s, 80’s etc. stations you can also see where the music has gone. DOWN THE TOILET!
Today’s stuff is done by folks with little talent (clearly there are a few exceptions) but something crude to say to push the envelope. Hardly anyone today would have made it back in the 60’s or 70’s when you “wrote” a song instead of “spitting out” an opinion like they do today. If you don’t believe me, the number one hit this week in December of 1964 was “COME SEE ABOUT ME” by the Supremes, in 74 it was “CATS IN THE CRADLE” by Harry Chapin, in 84 it was “OUT OF TOUCH” by Hall and Oates, in 94 it was “HERE COMES THE HOTSTEPPER” by Ini Kamoze and in 04 it was “DROP IT LIKE IT’S HOT” by Snoop Dog. I rest my case.
Call me old fashioned but I think it’s pretty clear…”Today’s music sucks”.

Does anyone remember when she had back surgery and broadcast her bed in her house. The promos they ran said “Kaedy Kiley, right where you always wanted her…flat on her back” I thought it was hysterical when she did that, you could hear her mother in the background taking care of her. “Atl” you suck!!!!!!!! what radio do you have left nothing!!!!! You got some of the lowest ratings recently that have ever been. I was around with Skinny Bobby, Christopher Rude, Randy nad Spiff, Kaedy, Mara, I listened to ATL music for 38 years after moving from Memphis TN, home of the blues and BEALE STREET not to mention unparalled artist in the industry…….ATL only wishes it could have the type of radio stations this city and all the states located around here. You can still walk into night clubs here and have a famous band doing a late night unexpected jam session similar to the Allman Brothers or some of the old southern fried bands….ATL you need to come up off what ever you are spinning and the formats you are putting out. How about the like of people like the Memphis Mafia controlling the airwaves…ATL would not have the problem it has now if it would lose it attitude.

Radio stations like to think they are cutting-edge, but from the listeners’ standpoint they are not. Can’t believe we’re still hearing the same old kitschy stuff we heard 30 years ago: listener calls, dedications, liners, phone scams, obnoxious car commercials, etc. You’d think they’d realize the competition is no longer with each other, but with new technology like satellite and Ipods.

Wow. Reading all of that made me respond. OK, I have lived in Atlanta for 36 years and I am a musician. Kady was a true talent. I now only listen to XM and Sirius. If you truly value music, this is where it’s at. Atlanta radio is HORRIBLE. If you want radio like it used to be, listen to 96Wave in Charleston. THAT is a cool station. No more to be said here. I will never again listen to 96, 99, 93 or any of the others. Satellite is where it’s at for any real music fan. Let me know what you think.

jra,
As you recall, WKLS used to be an easy listening station that went Hard Rock without any public notice. I heard a bunch of blue hairs wrecked on the downtown connector when the changed over one week morning at 8 a.m.
As for Ross and Wilson, besides the “another one bites the dust” which got them canned, I think they also called the American Embassy in Iran during the take over and actually got through to the Iranians who had captured the embassy. I was listening and it was real dicey because it even caught R&W off guard. They realized they had just done something really stupid and dangerous to the americans held captive.
Long live XM.

Hey Tim. You can still do fun things in Atlanta.
You can run for cover during the fireworks display at Centennial Park when the gangs start shooting at eachother.
You can dodge bullets in Buckhead when pro football players drive by.
You can pay $150 for a floor seat at a second rate concert.
You can watch Bobby and Whitney do coke while enjoying an expensive meal.
You can beat off beggars while trying to walk to school.
You can walk through a gauntlet of bling, trinkets and personalized t-shirts trying to catch a ride to a Braves game.
Don’t know why you want to go back to the 70’s and 80’s?

Can I chime in here? Kaedy is the coolest. When she first arrived at 96, we had her doing news with Mark & Steve, but eventually she settled in Pm drive and the rest is history. As for some of the other staff, Willard is now doing sales at Z93. Anybody remember the Bearman? And the hilarious interview with Men at Work where he tried to get them to talk Southern? He’s a big star in Allentown. Helium Monday was his idea, not mine. How about the day Roger McGuinn came in a performed live for an hour during a Psychedlic Lunch? (I was the host. It was incredible) The ORIGINAL Friday 5 O’Clock Whistle was done by me and I was amazed it still ran long after I had gone.
That’s enough for now, someday I’m gonna have to write a book. Back to Kaedy…I’ll bet she’ll be back on the air here someday.

I miss Kaedy and was sorry to see her go. Been listening to her for years….she is, a class act. Glad they didn’t get rid of Mara as well as Kaedy. What were they thinking? It’s a shame a city the size of Atlanta doesn’t have a decent radio station anymore. I listen to 92.9 some because it’s, sadly, the only thing in town. Except, I cannot listen in the mornings where egos abound. I wish Kaedy would come back…and that someone would start up a good radio station that plays cool stuff from the 60s, 70s. Is there not a station in Atlanta that will play a Beatles song anymore? How about QuickSilver, the Band, Tull, Dylan, Cream, BlindFaith?

Okay, lets go back like 30+ years. One station used to do “Fantasy Island Concert.” This was before hte TV show of the similar name. I was just a kid, but I remember them pretending there was this big concert all weekend. 94?
I also remember when the old Chattahoochee Raft Race used to pass under the one-lane steel bridge, which was how Powers Ferry Road crossed the river back then. Rafts 30 feet long made up of old truck inner tubes tied together with kegs and coolers and plenty of drunks.

Radio’s been a part of my life since 1957, but Atlanta radio? - not anymore. After the death of Cool 105.7 I quit listening to everything except NPR. But recently I discovered a fabulous radio station that has oldies like you’ve NEVER heard on even the best Atlanta radio. Check out realoldies1690.com. You’ll LOVE it!
I can’t understand why large markets such as Atlanta can’t find enough advertisers to support oldies formats anymore. I’m over 50 and I’m making the most money I’ve ever made in my life - and Baby Boomers ARE a consuming generation.
