7/5: Food for thought over firings

The whole Star Jones/Barbra Walters brouhaha exposes a standard public “white lie” that is disseminated in all industries, including radio. When people are fired, many announce they are leaving to “pursue other interests” or “spend more time with family” or “seek new challenges.” All are euphemisms for “We were just fired.” It’s a way to save face even if everyone knows it’s not true. It’s how industry came up with other softer terms like “laid off” and “let go” and “downsized.” And the most common explanation officials give publicly, when they give one at all, is “we want to take the station in a new direction.” In the case of the company, they don’t want to be sued if they say something nasty about said outgoing employee. Sometimes, we do get modest honesty when a station manager says, “We didn’t renew his contract,” which was the case with Rich Noonan. But why WGCL didn’t renew his contract I can only guess.

One of the greatest moments of honesty I’ve ever gotten from an official was former Kicks operations manager Dene Hallam in 2002. After Kicks didn’t renew Moby’s contract, Dene actually gave me a specific reason why Moby got fired: “Listeners told us, ‘We’re proud to be Southern,’ but if you listened to Moby’s dialect, it didn’t reflect the average Atlantan today.” Hallam’s candor didn’t sit well with his bosses. He was soon “let go” from Kicks 101.5 himself. In that case, his boss didn’t give an explanation and Dene shut his mouth on his way out the door.

In recent times, actually, some radio personalities have been amazingly open about getting fired and honestly, I don’t think there’s that big a stigma attached to it in radio. Examples include Crash Clark and Toucher at 99X, Pete Davis and Wayne “No Offense” Kitchens at WGST, “Southside” Steve Rickman over at 96rock. Things were a bit murkier with the Craig Cornett situation at Kicks, the way he arrived from St. Louis, then quickly went back. The story was he had to take care of his dying father.

Chicago Tribune TV critic Phil Rosenthal ruminates over this same issue here.

I think we as viewers should boycott the view. I was no fan of Star Jones by a long shot, but as a human being i found it disastrous how Barbara Walters treated her and denounced her just because she wouldn’t go along with Ms. Walters’ lies. Am I the only person that sees something wrong with this?? It was only after Star revealed that she was being fired that Barabara wanted to then address the viewers about the situation. She did it in a very cold, belittling manner as if to say, ” Ha take that.” Well lets show her and band together to get the view off the air!

I agree with Emily. The View has made a big mistake firing Star and hiring that butch of a bulldog Rosie O’Donald. What happened to her anyway? Was that ‘Nice Rosie’ persona all made up? Because as soon as she left her own show her true colors really shone. What a mess. I won’t be partaking in the show any longer.

It was business. She wasn’t what the producers wanted. Should she just be kept on the show because she was a nice person? I can tell you businesses make those choices daily and it’s just life. Star Jones has turned alot of people off in the past. She is offensive. The best thing she can do is move to some christian network and start her own version of “The View”. Maybe whoever she knows that is holding the future can provide her with a job too.

When it was announced that Star Jones was leaving the View, the producers said they were looking for a Hot young black girl for Rosie. That says it all.

Give it a break folks - obviously you View bashers have never even bothered to see the show - so shut up.

Star Jones has always been a self-grandizing and self-promoting woman over the needs of the show. Everything she did was about herself. Has she ever done anything worthwhile? How did she get on the show in the first place (she had the one “quality” the show needed for a fifth host).

She lies and badmouths others for no reason other than to make herself better. And, blackmailing several companies into giving her freebies for her wedding was disgusting. Good ridance to her - she’s not worth anything.

People who watch The View are in the same category as people who read US magazine, People, and watch Entertainment Tonight and other ‘celebrity’ news shows are all the same… pathetic.

Who cares if some previously fat, surgically altered, obnoxious, self serving, no talent, worthless sack of skin was fired by a bunch of shrill, untalented, hack, whining windbags at some awful TV show?

Get a life you losers.

I won’t be watching the “View” anymore. I’m disgusted by the way Star Jones Reynolds was treated. I liked Rosie on her talk show, but now she’s mean spirited and I don’t like that at all.

The research didn’t lie. Viewers were hatin on and very much tired of Star Jones. She went from brilliant to bobble head. But the research also had to show viewers also can’t stand Joy Behar and the other forgettable one. Does anybody know her name? There has also got to be tons of research to show people don’t want to see Rosie. But I guess they are just going to force her into the slot.

And who is O’Donnell to talk about “hiding” details of ones personal life. She never should have opened her mouth on that subject, especially since she kept her closet nailed shut until leaving her show.

Ok nobody is hating or bashing the ‘View’. Most of us who care about the feelings of others, regardless of how rich or ‘self serving’ know that how Star was treated was unjust and unfair. If she wanted to reveal the truth to the viewers, then that was her right! Who the hell is that old bag of bones Barbara Walters to say that she was betrayed simply by Star telling the truth. Is she serious?? She can’t be! Whether you like Star or not, you can’t refute that she was done wrong. That is all I am saying. So what if she didn’t want to tell the public aobut her PERSONAL weight loss details. Damn. Burn her at the stake will you. Did everybody forget about how Rosie hid in the closet and pretended to have a crush on Tom Cruise just to throw people off about her sexuality?? Wise up people and stop being so judgemental~! STOP watching the VIEW!!!

i was once an avid viewer of THE VIEW but then you could sense the change in the show. starr jones turned into a different person.you could feel the tension between her and joy.this is something that has been in the making for the past two years.starr is the one that caused this to happen and if you watched the show you wasn’t suprised once it happened.

I agree totally with Atlanta Finest. If Starr did not want to reveal how she lost the weight, who cares. I think she was fired for the very reason white females are praised. She spoke the truth and was not afraid to take a stand. Good luck to Starr in whatever she may do in the future.

When I was unemployed, I happen to “run across” the show and I only watched a few minutes of it…long enough to see some shindig with BaBa & the mayor of NYC—-it was boring and I never watched again….I do feel that if Star was treated in that fashion, it is wrong, and if nothing else, Baba should have had the class & cohones to be truthful and not kick someone when they are down. We have all been “let go” at some point and we all feel that it was unjust sometimes….so my 2 cents. I think people need to be less cut throat & selfish…which is now rampant in American society.

Anyone who knows anything about broadcasting…either radio or television…knows that getting fired is just a part of the business. It just comes with the territory. The most common reason…a new company buys out a station and fires everyone and brings in their new people. That’s just the way it works. That’s the last thing that was said to me by my broadcasting professor after I graduated. “Get ready to get fired…at least 3 or 4 times.”

Star Jones-Reynolds (please note the hyphenated last name. This practice seems inportant to some people) is one of the most difficult people to work with in the entertainment industry. How do I know this? I have friends in Los Angeles that have worked on various shows in which Ms. Jones-Reynolds has appeared and they all have varied stories of her berating crew members for not doing their jobs properly which is quite amusing to them. I mean did she go to law school or boom operator school? My point in saying all this is that Ms. Jones-Reynolds may have not had her contract renewed because after nine LONG years at “The View”, the produccers and staff may have had enough to not renew her contract. Star showed how much professionalism and class she has by jumping the gun and announcing her intentions earlier than the agreed date. I hope producers everywhere took note.

Hotlanta-jolie adopted babies-from Africa-your home country. Why she did that-I have no idea. Tired of hearing about white women having babies without husbands? How many times have you seen the news and seen it all about black people? Women with 3 kids by two different boy friends? Men in prison. Answer this-why are the “brothers” lurking around the streets for fat white women to impregnate? Why are they not out looking for “sistas” as you say in the ‘hood? Star typified the average black woman-she doesn’t have to answer any questions from white radio stations only from black ones and she has a chip on her shoulder and prays to Queen Oprah. Cosby is right-when blacks start thinking like Americans and not like Africans, their lives will change for the better. Star was kicked off because she became a BLACK B***! no one can stand a BLACK B***-ala Cynthia McKommunist. And that’s probably why the “brothas” are not “down” with the “sistas” much because they act like a Black B***! Change your attitude and your point of view. Congrats to Dallas Austin-he was not convicted for bringing marijuana into Dubai by reason of being a black man at the time. Man that is a good defense. Worked for Mr. Campbell. I guess having unaccounted for money in your account is a right in the Black Man’s handbook of good government.

I’m with you Emily. I’ve seen the replay many times and it burns me up how fake they all were when she made the anouncement. I don’t know how Star was able to sit there for two months faking it knowing she had been fired. It’s one thing to get rid of me, but to bring in a person who has trashed me publicly on numerous occassions is just low.

I NEVER cared for the View at all. The format was wack, and the show perpetrated an image I hate; a bunch of women spewing THEIR sentiments about things that don’t really matter, or acting as if they ARE PERFECT and have never been in the wrong about anything in life. But regardless as to the impact the show had on my life, the way Barbara Walters handled this has left me feeling as though I would never WATCH ANYTHING she has ANY connection with. To pretend she was ‘trying to protect’ Star and all the hoopla-that she FELT BETRAYED is sickening. Star was not fired because of anything she did on the show. It was because her PERSONAL life..(and yes, celebrities can have those) was being “VIEWED” and rated in a non flattery way. Her personal decisions didn’t set well with some viewers, supposedly…and that was why she was being fired. If that clause was in her contract; fine. She should have come to anticipate that and started looking for work the momment it was brought to her attention back in January. But to get angry because she choose to exit days before she was ‘scheduled’ to while she is continously attacked by a new employee in the media is ridiculous. Rosie’s mouth should have been put on pause and that should have been a stipulation to her getting the new position. Otherwise, bashing Star was only creating flurries that stirred up the type of audience that the View didn’t want; the Jerry Springer type.

Who/What Star married is no one’s businesss. How she lost weight, is no one’s business. Just because Rosie is ‘out of the closet’ about her sexual life does not mean that others don’t have the right to protect what they VIEW as private. Privacy should be respected. What is not disclosed should not automatically be assumed to be a ‘cover up’ or ‘misleading’.

I wish Star all the success in the world. Perhaps now she can become a part of something that matters; something truly life changing that will benefit more than the rich, famous, bored, criticizers and fantasizers that seemed to tune into that particular show.

As for the view…I hope they don’t feel a need to fill any sorta ‘racial’ quota and add a new Black just to even things out. Add someone that mirrors their TRUE feelings, expectations and goals…however stupid they may be.

Broadcasting is like that. At least Star had notice. She could have decided to leave as soon as she was told her contract was not going to be renewed (whenever that was)CONTRACT ? How many of us, in any industry, have a contract. Don’t feel to sorry for her, she is being paid through the end of her contract. If she did make an agreement to make the announcement of her departure from the show on a particular date, then be a professional, and stick to what you agreed too. She saw an opportunity to up-stage the show and the other folks and took it. None of us are owed a job, we are given a job and paid accordingly for our performance. If you are lucky, you might get some sort of contract. But it is not guaranteed that you will always have that job. Things change, people change, performances change. Star’s decision was very calculated. I think she showed total un-professionalism by not sticking to what she agreed to. Beyond that, go get your own show. Then you can hire and fire whoever you want, whenever you want.

Whoa super elf. I hope you are super to where it really matters. First of all Africans where the first ones to raise their kids and keep their families together until they were kidnapped and sold to this country. The phrase it takes a village to raise a child, comes from African and Hillary Clinton kidnapped that phrase also.So to think like Americans means splitting up the family structure. The reason why the news report sistahs having babies is because who runs the news. All you gotta do is go over the the AUCenter and see all of those shades of blackness doing their thang. Thank God for Oprah,Dateline/Primetime and Dr. Phil to show America how white America really lives. If not for these shows we all will think that you guys live like Leave It To Beaver. Excuse me, Paul McCarthy was caught with marajuania in Japan years agoand got off. So don’t even go there with me on that one. As far as the black man/white girl thang. That is so played. Black woman are trying to buy homes and get our stock portfolio together. We go to much to do with our lives. So acting as if our only choice is a black man, as if we had no options. As quiet as it is kept, we are wanted all over the world. Ask Prince Rainer of Monocao.

Don’t have cable and I have not seen the View, but it a fan and ratings based business like TV/radio, they should be able to fire anyone who is not producing and/or low ratings. From listeng to the clips and news articles, Star violated the cardnal rule of not trashing the people you work with when you leave. I will be surprised if she gets another gig. I don’t think race has anything to do with it.

Something as a bit of honesty goes a very long way. In fact, it follow you through-out your life time. In any big industry, people are not going to be hired without signing a contract…point blank! With so many ways of suiting and claiming this or that, lawyers who oversees’ entertainers contracts are paid to be right. Unlike a lot of things that goes on behind closed doors, behind office doors, and even in factories, anything can be said that something is amist. The sad part about hearsay is, we really don’t know the real story; there are two sides, and if the honesty comes out, perhaps, we will hear the other side. People also want to be respected for their own personal reasons as well. They don’t like to tell the public about their problems; even if they got fired, lay off or whatever. It hurt them more than they would even want to be up front with it! Entertainers lives up to a very high public discounting the truth from lies. Hollywood got all america thinking that its a great place and to be in position where you can live as free as you like. Not so, because your contract you signed changed your personal life; that is, you must honor it regardless how you think or feel about this or that. Mrs. Jones perhaps had her reasons, she was thinking about her duties or future, maybe she just did not feel like it to be in the position she was in; so what lead her to do what she did; is something she can tell us as her life goes on. Its good to be a star, but being a star has its’ draw-backs and you deal with pros and cons, god and bad each day. Such is the life in the entertaining business; it not concrete.

As terrible as Star Jones-Reynolds may have seemed… show business is tough and your current gig can easily be your last. There’s tons of folks out there who were on a hit show or had a hit record, didn’t leverage it right or save any money and when the hit is over and they can’t score another one, they’re back to doing day job work or worse… showing up on The Surreal Life. Tasteless, yes… but the way Jones-Reynolds cushioned her nest egg with freebies, sponsorships, etc. means she probably doesn’t ever have to work again if she doesn’t want to.

Please I ain’t trying to be “the comfort zone Negro” of the moment for white folks. They put it out there and I am putting it out there also. It is a new sheriff in town. Bull Conner is dead. First of all Star had a career before the View. She is a LAWYER. Where has Joy or whatever or name is has performed I never heard nor seen her before the view. I almost passed out while watching Judge Mathis when this white woman was showing him her daughter’s report card and she was happy that she had D’s and F’s on the report card. She had the nerve to say I just wanted to show you that she is in school. The sadder part about that is a lot of black parents got their kids in that same school and bragging that their kids go to that school Also, on the same day he had another white boy growing weed in mom’s basement. A lot of black people are probably so happy that they live in that same white community. So why is it when the bottom of the barrel of black people do something we all do it, but when the bottom of the barrel of what people do something, HE did it not us. White folks don’t like to face the truth about themselves because of a lie that is fed through the media that yall don’t do anything wrong. I guess you missed that Frontline special on Channel 8 over the weekend about the Meth epidemic in a WHITE Oregon town? But you can show DiShawn being arrested by the police 3 times a day for a speck of crack. PLEASE. Don’t let me get started on how white people expect the King family to be poor but expect the Kennedy’s, Nixon’s and Reagans to be rich. They are suppose to ride in a wagaon while the white folks ride in a limosine.

It’s funny how black people slap themselves on the back for things like “Taking care of their kids” or “making a mortgage payment” “paying for health insurance” or any of the basic responsibilites an adult has. Once they pick up a responsibility and take care of it, they end up on a message board bad mouthing white people, throwing out the race card, bragging that they got it going on, etc. I can’t remember if it was Chris Rock or Mike Epps who commented on this subject in one of their stand up acts, but one of two made a comment in reference to blacks bragging about taking care of their kids or something “*, you supposed too”. Staying out of the discussion, but offering one little correction - Africa is not a country. It is a continent. So it doesn’t make much sense to call people “African-American”.

African-North American, maybe, or Ethiopian-American (or any other country on the continent of Africa), but not continent-hyphen-country. That’s just incorrect.

Frankly, I’m against the phrase altogether but that’s another discussion. We’re all simply Americans unless we prefer to divide ourselves, no?

I have read some of the comments about the Jones/Walters thing. I caution statement this as my opinion only…I think Star became too comfortable in her “world”. She forgot that she was disposable in that “world”. I noticed long before she went public with she got dumped statements she would constantly elude to the fact that she still pays her dues. You could look in her face on many of the previous episodes that she was disgusted and was going through the motions. She did it to herself. If you watched the Larry King June 29 interview she is mad, but she still tries to play the victim. D* she had plenty of time to make for a graceful exit, but I think she stuck her foot in her mouth when she gave the People interview. She had her back up against the wall so this was her way of going out with style.

True, 95% of the population WANT to have a mortgage to pay, take care of their children, pay their bills, etc. That’s not a black or white thing….it’s a human think. Most of us want to succeed. Of course there a knuckleheads out there who just don’t give a damn…but for the most part we all want to succeed in life. Am I wrong? But for the record, I am a 42 year old black woman w/a 4 year degree, my husband also graduated from college and he WORKS in the penitentiary. He has just a few years and he can retire.. full pension. I am a stay at home mom because I can be. Both my children belong to my husband and we do own a home. I don’t feel we have it going on…we just have it together. And I hope to keep it that way. Pay my mortgage off early, make sure my kids graduate from H.S. and college and then return to work once my husband retires so that he can be here for the kids. We don’t just pat ourselves on the back, we high five ourselves because we live in a tough world. And $3 for a gallon of gas doesn’t make it any easier. And take it from someone who knows, yes there are alot of blacks on prison, but alot of them (not all) but alot of them go to jail for the same crimes that whites committ but get to walk. Am I sure? Yes, as I said my husband works in the system.

Oh you have black friends. So that makes you an authority. Oh yeah how many brothas have you had. You are really in the house now. WOW!!!!!! It just amaze me how white people get excited about getting a double wide trailer. Let’s ask Priscilla Presley what was she doing in the bed with Elvis at the age of 14 and where were her parents when all of this was going on. Didn’t Jerry Lee Lewis marry his cousin? Didn’t Katherine Hepburn carry on a affair with a married man for over 20 years and the wife had to come and claim his body upon his death. Let’s not talk about Tim Allen getting clear of drug charges. Need I go on. It’s not enough days in the week to go on about white folks honey and you know it. You are just p** that I am going toe to toe with you. I am debunking a myth that you also believe. Come closer, I ain’t afraid to say anything I wanna say to you as a white person, okay. The war is over. Take off the Confederate cap chile. Years ago I would have been hung for talking to you like this. I would be accused if being a “uppity Negra” and I would have been hung on the village square for all to see.

True,

Thank you for the clarification. In defense of some of the other bloggers, however, I think many of them are just sick and tired of being stereotyped by the mainstream. They are defensive because they do NOT exude many of the negative characteristics that “some” people try to label them with.

We can all get p*ed off and talk about our perceived issues with each other’s races all day. But at the end of the day, where does it get us? Ultimately, it comes down to the individual.

Unfortunately, many of us, no matter the pigment of our skin, find it easier and “safer” to just lump the individual into our self-created categories. ‘Tis sad, but true.

Tina,

Are you a minority or are you the majority within your race?

In reference to white people walking for the same crimes. I have witnessed this myself. The difference a lot of times is in the person, person’s family, and where they are in life.

If a white person and black person are caught driving under the influence of alcohol, one or the other may get off lighter because of the “full” picture. If 1 of the persons has family support, is well dressed with a haircut, is in school, the judge might think embarrasing them with community service, probation, and a fine is sufficient to deter them from doing it again. The judge might look at the next person, black or white, and see someone who does not have a family, is not in school, is not well dressed, and give them a short jail sentence. Judges are required and need to make judgement on a case by case basis. We have seen zero tolerance shows zero sense in both black and white cases! I understand your arguement, but their is an entire picture that must be looked at on a case by case basis. I would think educated people like yourselves can see that.

SAT,

I would be sick of the stereotypes too if I were black. It sucks. The only way to correct this is to condemn the actions of your own brothers and sisters, whether black or white and take responsibility for your own actions. It is in the individual. I totally agree with that. I am by no means a racist and would welcome a black person or anyone else into my home right now. The one thing I cannot stand though is the fact that black people condone a lot of stuff black people do. They not only enable it, but spread it to younger generations because kids pickup on everything. I respect Bill Cosby for stepping up and making some hard public statements about black people. Yes, white people have the same problems, but many of the problems are too rampant in poor black neighborhoods. Hotlanta would be the 1st to called NBC a white TV Station, but at the same time use them to bad mouth white people because they exposed them as child molestors. I do not condone child molestation and I was glad to see those people go away, hopefully for a long time. Yes they were all white people and yes I disagree with them. I do not understand what is so hard about that. Oprah disagrees with most rap lyrics, and now she is being viewed as an “Uncle Tom” in the black community. I think black people shoud be proud of Oprah and she should be a role model to younger generations. She has overcome more than any of us to get to where she is at, but now, she is being labeled as a racist or somoene who does not stand up for blacks. She stands for what is right, not color.

True, When you get a chance, go sit in the court room on any day and see how each case ends. You will be shocked. I have done it. It wasn’t pretty. I will be signing off because it is 5 and I need to watch the news. Take care people.

Star Jones is your typical “African Queen” who thinks she can get anyway with anything- much like most of the Black “sistas” in Atlanta. All of them believe that they can act loud and ghetto and whorish without any consequences. And of course these weak and thuggish Black men cater to and tolerate this behavior. If you don’t believe me, listen to the typical woman that calls V103 or observe how they behave at any establishment in this city. Completely unacceptable.

hotlanta, Tina and chocosista- One incident in White Oregon vs an on going thing night after night in Get down and Boogie ville-the ATL. Turn on the NEWS SISTAS! Not BET, the Monica Kaufman channel or channel 5-Brothas in the news. Every night, some brother or Mexican is getting arrested for something-he makes the headlines and then, the domestic dispute-black man and a FAT disgusting White girl. TRUE has got it down right. The truth hurts and that is what p** off black people. Get thy act together in your own community-like kicking out Cynthia McKommunist, then get the Brothas an education-not in drug dealing or pimping, and then in criminal justice. After that-come talk to me in a couple of years. Cosby is right-DEAL WITH IT!
