9/27: History of 99X

99X is doing a morning show of Steve Craig sifting selectively through the 99X coffers of the last 14 years, focusing primarily on the musical acts and lots and lots of Live X’s. Thank you below for noting that Steve has namedropped a few past personalities and played clips with fleeting voices of the past including Barnes and Jimmy. But clearly, they are focusing on the music, not the personalities. And it’s funny that they are supposedly hiding the new morning hosts from even Steve Craig. Still no word on whether Demery (1992-1999) is going to reappear on Monday — or not. Will Pendarvis, a night jock for 99X from 1992 to 1995, has refuted any rumor that he’s coming back — he’s happy working for Sirius out of Los Angeles.

Sean did email me back with a facetious comment when I asked what he was up to:

Presently I’m going to the grocery store to get string cheese, diet rite cola and nectarines. There’s nothing like a good firm nectarine! I’d give two plums and a bushel of cling peaches for a good nectarine.

sd

I also heard from a good source who one of the cohosts for the new 99X morning show will be: Rob Jenners, a former stunt guy for a Regular Guys-kind of show at Miami’s Big 105.9 called the Paul & Young Ron Show.

Robert_Jenners.jpg Here’s what Rob Jennings, one of the new 99Xers, looks like.

It’s being dubbed “The New Morning X,” resurrecting the original name of the show from about 1993 to 2003.

Whats really funny though, is that this morning the ONLY dj’s that were mentioned by Steve Craig, were Leslie, Sean, and Will….did he have a little slip???? Guess we’ll find out Monday.

my money is on Will, they have played interviews by him over the past day or two. Maybe trying to reintroduce his voice. He’s coming back. Nothing from Sean.

I have been listneing to this more and more as the week goes on, and love it. Though I would love to have heard some old Morning X stuff, the music and the history as well as the stories that Steve is putting out there is great stuff. I hope the new morning show is the kind of thing that lifts the station back out of the ratings cellar. I think the music is finally right.

Steve (and others in their ‘flashbacks’) has mentioned Sean, Will, Toucher and others numerous times in passing. They are not playing clips from shows, rather remembered moments paired with music of the time or the appropriate live performance/interview.
They did air a David Bowie song/interview yesterday morning that was done with Morning X in which you heard (briefly) both Jimmy and Barnes.

I would guess that it has less to do with ‘hiding or recreating the past’ and more to do with celebrating 14 years of amazing music and musical experiences. 99x is smart to remind their listeners where they came from and how they got to where they are- how much apart of music history they are as a station.

Honestly, I think the show has been great. I hope they incorporate more music from the past into their current playlist. And that the new morning show keeps this chill-vibe that Steve has; no more morning gab, Atlanta- I like to wake up slowly!!!

This is highly unlikely but wouldn’t it be really ironic if the MorningX came back?? The show was very successful and Jimmy and Barnes are out of work right now. Just food for thought…

I’d like to have a radio station DJ’ed by great Disk Jockeys that have passed on…like Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack and others. Their recordings would be much more compelling than the vast majority of the living on-air “talent” that makes the needle flicker here in Atlanta.

In addition to the earlier commenter’s notes, Steve played a blurb from Jill this morning describing her interviewing Linkin’ Park- I havn’t heard her voice on the airwaves there in a very long time.

Steve also mentioned Sean and Will when mentioning that he was not in many of the megaband photo ops from festivals because he was over at the locals only stage pimping it.

He also made a reference that he was in the “basement auxillery studio” while masked people guarded by a security guard worked in the main one. Though, we all know, there is no basement studio- he’s probably in the 3rd studio for the 3rd station that Susquehanna never lit up.

My husbands convinced that this “looking back” is because they are going to completely change the format of the entire station. I disagree but it’s still an interesting point.

I’d say it’s fairly unlikely Barnes will ever be a part of anything on 99X again in light of the fact HE’S CURRENTLY SUING THEM! C’mon, people, think.

First, I’d love to hear more about this 3rd station that Susquehanna never followed through with. Is that true?

Also, I know Barnes is suing them, but I also thought it might just be PR for the Morning X getting back together.

Anything is possible, but I doubt they are changing formats. I don’t think they would put Axel back in the afternoon’s if that were the case.

Also, I have been enjoying the History of 99X. I mainly listen to the Bert Show in the morning with some flipping here and there when a commercial is on or they are talking about something I don’t care about (like Battle of the Bridesmaids) but this morning I caught myself listening to Steve talk about the Ramones and kept it on 99X for a lot longer than usual.

The History of 99X is a good balance of music and talk and kind of refreshing. Steve has been awesome this week.

I agree - Steve is doing a great job with this week’s morning shows. He’s really gotten pretty good at what he does in general. (I do get tired of hearing about his vacations — 2 weeks before he goes and at least one week after he gets back — we all take vacations and we all think they are cool.) But again, he does a great job with stuff like this, including the Nirvana weekend, and his daily noon show. etc. It’s a pleasure to hear entertaining radio wherein the DJ’s don’t assume you’re a dumbass and treat you like one.

The third station never really entered existance, it was merely built out in the facilities that Susquehanna moved into a few years back - they have 3 full production studios such that they can run 3 live stations from their current offices. I beleive that was for the contingency that they acquired another frequency in the market at some point, which is always a possibility.

DS- Last I listened, Jill is still on 99x, usually on Saturday afternoons. Her profile page says she’s a teacher at a local high school, so that’s probably why.

Also, I seriously doubt they’re changing formats. Nothing more than switching up the tunes some. I suppose we’ll find out Monday morning.

And about this ‘3rd’ studio. I once took a tour after a Live-X, and they told me it was there for if/when shows ran long (morning show). The cast could move to the ‘3rd’ studio during a break so that the next DJ could still prep for their show in the main studio. Or they had a band to interview off live air. It definintely was not in the basement!!

I wish I had a third office. Just for when my main one was filled with work I didn’t want to do. :-D

The show is pretty good I think. People do need to be reminded. Because whether you admit it or not, if 99X goes out, it will suck for a lot of us.

Rodney, you could have looked at the headers on that email from Sean and gotten a good idea of whether or not he was here. The IP is normally a good giveaway… either by its DNS name or by traceroute, you can generally figure out the location of the sender.
