10/2: Sean Demery returns to 99X

sean-demery-2.jpg

In possibly the worst-kept secret in Atlanta radio land, former 99Xer Sean Demery is back, helming the “new Morning X.” At 6 a.m. this morning, he kind of flubbed around and after a false start, announced “I’m back home. My name is Sean Demery. Once again, I’m 99X.” Then he played “How Soon is Now” by the Smiths, the last song he played when he left 99X about six years ago. (I got a shot of Sean above at about 7:20 a.m.)

Afterwards, they announced “the new Morning X with Sean, Leslie and Jenners.” That’s Rob Jenners, who I figured out last week. They introduced themselves and the fourth person was not Yvonne Monet or Jamie Massey as guessed but someone named Monti (photo below). Here’s Monti’s myspace page.

Monti-Carlo.jpg

Jamie is still doing traffic for both Q100 and 99X. Here’s a shot of Jamie giving me the “Why are you taking my photo?” look: jamie-massey-1.jpgw2

Joey Mills is the second caller. He is buds with a lot of 99Xers and a regular blogger here. He noted a few weeks back that Sean told him straight out he wasn’t going to come to 99X. In fact, Sean told me the same thing when the rumors first came out here.

But apparently, Sean changed his mind. He said he had quit his job in San Francisco was the program director of Live 105 to deal with family issues. He said he talked to Leslie all the time anyway and they began discussing the rumors.

“We thought about it. What would that be like? What would I do? Would anyone give a rat’s [arse]?”

“I always thought Sean was the sound of 99X,” Joey said.

“Do we pull numbers to kiss Sean’s [arse]?” joked Jenners. (Here’s a photo of Jenners)

rob-jenners2.jpg

Sean noted that he was part of the original morning show on 99X back in late 1992-93 before he swapped jobs with afternoon man Steve Barnes. “I was the most miserable morning man,” he noted, honestly. But he promises he’s changed: “I’ve lost more hair. I’ve bulked up and I’m ready for this… My shorts are riding high in my pants just thinking about it.”

They then introduce the two new names in the room: Jenners, who is Rob Jenners, a stunt guy for a “Regular Guys” type morning show at Big 105.9 in Miami. “It was a boy’s club,” Jenners said. As a result, “I’m a jaded and angry individual… It’s a good change… It’s a new step. I already don’t like you all,” he joked.

The one person we here on the blog couldn’t figure out was Monti. And her radio name is Monti Carlo. A standup comic who has performed at the Punchline, she said she worked at Z93 for a couple of years but didn’t specify what. (I asked her later and she apparently did traffic for Dave Marino’s show in the 2001-02 era) She said she came from West Palm Beach, where she was doing mid-day DJ work at a top 40 station. (The operations director Rob Roberts for Q100/99X came from south Florida.)

Here’s Leslie (l) with Monti. leslie-and-monti.jpg

The very first phone guest is Kiefer Sutherland, who has started a record label but better known for that Fox show “24.” And since this is the world of radio, this is actually a taped interview, not live but they pretend that it’s live.

Early on, Jenners is clearly the spiciest element in the bunch. Monti has been relatively quiet in the early going and she has to read sports though admitting minimal knowledge of it. Leslie is doing the news as usual but sounds more comfortable than when she was on with Toucher. She’s old buds with Sean so that makes sense. Sean hasn’t done on-air stuff in years but it’s like riding a bike. He’s back and he sounds good (though noting that they are No. 2 in a particular city every time one is namechecked got old fast.)

Their first “street” bit at 8:40 a.m. was Monti going to Smith’s Olde Bar and quizzing drunk folks about 5th grade level questions. Is this an original bit? Not in the least but I guess it’s better than “Battle of the sexes.”

At 9:55 a.m., they resurrected Toucher’s “What I learned today” bit. Jenners? “I learned Rodney Ho’s a good guy but if he writes anything negative about me, I’ll find him and beat him.” Sweet!

Then they ended the show with “Peanut Butter Jelly Time,” some oddball song that I can’t imagine will last because it doesn’t fit in what should be an alternative rock station morning show. It might work okay on the Disney Radio channel but not here. Sean danced, which was amusing — for folks in the studio.

Is the show as “edgy” as the Toucher show? Nope. It’s clearly meant to be more female friendly. But aren’t those listeners already over at Q100? If anything, the station is trying to turn back the clock, regain the listeners from their heyday in the 1990s. Is that even possible given that the competitive environment has changed? We shall find out the answers to these questions soon enough.

So far Sean sounds good just like I remember him. An yes as a Leslie critic she even sounds pretty good this morning. More in her element. I remember Monte from Z. For awhile she did I believe news and/or traffic with Dave Marino when he was handling mornings.

How are you going to tell me if you are trying to get the alternative crowd and you are going to bring in some guy in his 50s that was here almost 15 years ago. I thought the music scene had changed but I guess not. Hey though if you are trying to be like Pat Riley and the Miami Heat you have the Shaquille O’Neal in Leslie Fram because she has been around and knows what it’s like to be a champion! I tried to win a lunch with Leslie Fram at the Falcons party a couple months back at ESPN Zone but alas I have to keep dreaming and hope one day I can have lunch with her! Her treat of course!

Sean jumped right back in and boy am I glad. I think I’ll jump back in also. I have missed the music but will not miss the personalities that have gone. The less air time for Leslie the better, also. If they will keep it somewhat clean and interesting, I’ll stay, too.

I remember Monti. She is wonderful. Her momma has a rockin’restaurant. She and Mara were great. Then the hill billy and beauty queen came over to Z and she was gone. I wrote her and Mara a crazy poem when the change happened. Welcome back! And Rodney, pick 1 way to spell her name… I am jazzed about the line up. They sound great. My iPod has not been out for a week now. I loved Steve in the morning and the new show is great so far. Toucher can kiss it!

Jenners sounds like he belongs over on Star 94 or Q100. He sounds like he is just itching to be “wacky” and “crazy”

Gosh golly what crazy hijinks will he come up with tomorrow?

Love the rest of it, though I think Jamie Massey would have been a good fit too (but what do we know about Monty yet?)

Seriously quake? Really? Are you part of that 50+ group too? “What a treat” golly, gee whiz - Not to be a Toucher promoter, I hated the guy, but at least he was “something” of what 99x should be about. I think Toucher was never given the opportunity to develop, he needed to be reeled in instead of scolded by J&L. As for Axel, poor dude, he was throw in there and got slammed. How in the world was he to succeed? I guess they knew, as did Axel, that he was temporary, so they gave him nothing other than Leslie to work with, no producer, no side-kick, nothing. Oh well, we’ll see how they “develop”, hope it happens before they retire.

I eagerly awaited the show at 6 am this morning. It sounded a little amateur at 6 am, like they didnt realize they were on the air already. I was disappointed to hear Leslie is still there. Sigh. I told my husband she is like a cockroach, she just won’t go away.

Also, I remember Monte too, but I couldn’t remember from where.

Also, Jenners sounds a little like Jimmy in his intonation.

I like the bullhorn! And when Sean interrupts the music to make a statement.

I don’t think interviewing drunk people is a bit even Rich can lay claim to- it’s been around forever and that’s because, when done right, it’s funny. Give Monti a little time, she’ll settle in.

I must admit, it’s been a bit fumblesome… but I’m loving the show. Anyone notice that the music selection has been a bit ‘modified’ as well? I wonder if it’s a sign of things to come? Perhaps Steve’s little retrospective has got someone’s ear…

And though I hate it when people post off-topic, Axel is sounding great back in afternoons. Welcome back, 99x!

Also- does Jenners’ voice remind anyone else of Sebastian??

I don’t like their new morning show…. it sounds cheesy and cookie cutter and a little too much like the spoof radio show that leslie, jimmy & toucher did with unsuspecting radio guests…. I like 99x when it was a little bit edgier…i think they are going to lose their younger listeners, even though i’m 27….

The show sounds like the “Dave St. Dave” morning show spoof that TJL used to do! Get rid of all the silly noises and slapstick comments! Why don’t they come up with some original stuff to do, rather than pulling stunts from PAST morning shows! I hated Toucher when he first started and grew to love his show, I can only hope the same happens here.

i am not really sure what i think of the new show yet, but i am glad that axel and leslie is over, axel is so much better in the afternoon, and i think Cumulus made a big mistake letting toucher get away. he was hilarious and knew how to get listeners involved in the show.

Don’t be absurd; no one’s ripping off Rich Shertenlieb. Pretty much EVERY morning show with any humor whatsoever does street bits. And Toucher & Rich? If you ever tune in online, you’d know that they do that same ol’ TJL bits…”Reality Check” and “My Weekend Sucked Because” so really, who’s original? Rich? Toucher? Hardly. Two different stations in two different markets. The show’s awesome so far. I laughed out loud a few times. Great job!

I agree that the “We’re #2 there” with the dinging bell sounded old and cliche, again like a “Wacky Morning Zoo Crew” kind of thing that Dave Barry would parody. I’m always glad to hear Leslie on the air, and it’s great to have Sean back. It will be interesting to hear them experiment as mornings go by. At least the “New 99X” wasn’t that they were bought by ClearChannel or something.

I moved here in 93, and started listening to 99x from the very beginning. I was so bummed when Shawn left and the Velveeta room was no more. I stopped listening when the Toucher/Crash era came upon us and moved to DaveFM. I just happened to have 99x on this morning when I got in the car, and what a great surprise to hear Shawn (Shaun? Sean?) back again. I’ll be listening to 99x in the morning from now on! ~ I heard Jimmy still on there, but he wasnt mentioned as part of the crew. Was I hearing things? or does that Rob guy just sound like the freak that doesnt like to be touched? ~ signed ~No relation to MsMonet.

Ugh. At what point did Cumulus think that this crew appeals to their core demographic? And how is this show going to differ from The Bert Show?

More clueless radio management at work. When Fred Toucher left, 99x lost its best asset. I have never heard funnier or more engaging morning radio than the first 6 months of The Don Miller Morning Show.

WBCN listeners in Boston are getting what we should have in Atlanta - Toucher, Rich & Crash Clark.

Poor, poor pitiful people who like 105.3 the Scuzz. Yes, I’m going off topic, but since someone else brought it up, get over it. Queer Channel is corporate radio at its finest. Oh, please, play some more Staind, Slipknot and My Chemical Romance every hour! I can’t get enough! The only @$$-handing going on is Chris Williams getting handed back and forth between the Scuzz and KLS. I’m sorry, but having the same PD for two stations in the same market, a large market no less, is poor management, even if it’s just interim. But they don’t care about their listeners anyway, they just throw some cookie-cutter tunes at you just like every other station they own in the nation. Check out text to be linked if you’re still wondering what conglomorate media is doing to the music industry.

What is alternative about bring back the past. I also want to know what is so hip and cool about 2 50 year old DJ’s no matter how nice trying to figure out what is alternative and sterrt smart. Leslie is great but it time she realize she is management and do what she does best. Manage the station. You need a fresh new morning show. Not one that has been recylced and brought back in. Sean could not make it in SF. I hate to say but the rating their was as bad as yours. Lowest in stations history. I would think u would bring in someone fresh edgy in an alternative way, not older people who need to ask someon e what is the next big thing while they are home in the big houses. Nothing wrong with that but….onh well you can only go up from here. The aribitrons were aweful

Monti’s a good looking girl, as is Jamie. I have never been a big 99x morning show fan. The hollywood drivel, etc. Worthless. Now, if they had a webcam, I might turn off the audio and watch their show every once in a while just for kicks. They should consider doing some offsite broadcasting to get some fun action in their routine rather than just instudio blabber.

I just moved from South Florida amd listened to Paul and Ron. This is the show Jenners came from. I personally don’t care for the “new” Morning X. To start from the beginnig, letting Barnes go was a big mistake. Letting Toucher guide the boat afterwards was an even bigger mistake. I mean, he is a complete moron. At least Jimmy and that whining fool, Wally is gone along with him. When I heard Axil and Leslie on the Morning X, it was refreshing. At least Axil has a brain and uses it but Steve Craig is the BEST thing at 99X. I am glad he is not the next “try” for the morning crew since his better fit is the midday slot. It also seems that if you don’t make the morning show work that your next stop is the curb. I agree with all of you that said the “new” new (how many times now?) morning X won’t last. I give it 6 months at best.

Steve Craig, Keep up the good work!!!!

As I predicted on 9/22 on this blog: Not a big stretch, very predictable, doomed to failure -

RHCP, Foo Fighters, Beck, and Green Day. Sounds like…99x. No one that listens to “alternative” also wants to hear bad, BAD active rock.

Ok, I’m saying it.

Toucher left BY CHOICE! He asked to be released from his contract so he could look for another gig. He didn’t want to be in Atlanta radio anymore. So I guess if you want to be technical- he abandoned you, his precious listeners (obviously though he appreciated your support and loyalty- not trash talking Toucher here). Either way- he’s gone. In the imortal words of the Eagles and the pop-cheeze drill of OK Go!- GET OVER IT! You want Toucher, listen to WBCN streaming in the afternoons. In the meantime, we’re talking about a MORNING SHOW here in ATLANTA!

Hey tim- that’s gross. Grow up.

Has anyone scrounged up audio of ‘Jenners’ in Miami yet? It’s gotta be out there somewhere…

Also, someone (ahem- Rodney!) should calculate the average age of Morning Show DJ’s in Atlanta. Compared to the average age of jocks as a whole in commercial atlanta radio. I speculate it will be in the 30-35 range. How’s that for old?! At least the kats on X know their music- judging by this morning, that’s obviously more valuable to them than just another button pusher (could Sean have been rustier on the boards!?)

By Dave

October 2, 2006 11:24 AM | Link to this

Here’s what Sean brings to the table that Toucher (for the most part) or the clowns at the Buzz don’t bring to the table - wit.

It’s subtle - and I know the Buzz crowd doesn’t tolerate subtle - and it’s classic. Will Pendarvis had it too, and the new night guy Dekkar is promising (but he needs to lose the radio-idiot name for his real name, like Will and Sean). It’s an intellectual humor that fits nicely with the format. This know this sounds overly-simple, but 99X came across as a “smart” station in the ’90s, which I think was part of the attraction.

Toucher belonged on 96Rock or his new station in Boston. The Buzz morons belong on the Buzz. I’m down with the new Morning X.

By No, Seriously

October 2, 2006 11:25 AM | Link to this

Seriously? You’re wrong. Toucher didn’t ask to leave, he was let go. His contract wasn’t up for renewal until October (now, basically). They (the new owners) supposedly didn’t like his style. But he didn’t “leave” on his own. He was “released from his contract early” so to speak, but not by choice. Jimmy was the one that was up for contract renewal in April, and decided not to take a 55% cut in pay.

99X sucks!

Does 99X know there are bands other than the Killers they could be playing? And what’s the point of calling the 5:00 o’clock afternoon show to request a song they’re not going to play anyway. Also, Axel’s music taste and morning jock abilities suck. BORING!!!

I have been listening to 99.7 since the Power 99 days. What has happen to this station over the last year? I hated Toucher, but I liked him Leslie & Jimmy so much better than whatever it is they are trying to do now. If I wanted to listen to this crap I would listen to Star 94 or Q 100. What happen to 99x? There is a reason listeners are changing the station. I may have to change the station after 15 years.

Flipped on 99x at 6:15am this morning, just in time to hear the introductions. I agree the hokey radio gags and sound effects got old quick. I thought it sounded pretty good. I think if you give them some time to settle in and try a few bits and get a couple that work, then the show might have a chance at success. I really liked Monti’s Sports Report. Seeing as she is already “admitting minimal knowledge” of sports, doesn’t that qualify her for a job on either 790 or 680? God knows Mayhem in the AM could use someone who actually talks about sports in the morning.

The Leslie part of the show was a snooooooooooozefest.

30 minute ramblings about gossip read straight from the newspaper is not what I consider to be entertaining.

Anyone interested in that tripe will be reading about it on the internet AFTER they get to work.

Stick to stuff that actually FITS the alternative demographic!

Maybe Jenners can give some insight. Paul and Young Ron is HUGE in Miami.

I apologize if this comment is there twice. It’s uncanny how much Jenners sounds like Jimmy. The show has too many silly noises and sound bits. It was just like the Dave St. Dave show. Were you trying to pull a joke on us listeners since this was the first day? I hope so. PBJ time? I’m a female and I don’t like the show to be quirky or silly, it makes me feel like I’m being talked down to (like a cheap sitcom). It was like listening to Star 94 or The Bert Show. Please differentiate yourselves, it’s what makes 99x good. Like someone else said, there is potential there.

You are all like a broken record. “Who cares what happens on terrestial radio I have XM/Sirius and their programming is the best.” Yes their business model is basically something for everyone. Non eof their individual channels afdd up to much listeners it is just the collectiveness of it. Terrestial radio station as you like to call them have to appeal to a broader base to succeed so they can’t be so niche.

If you are so in love with your satellite why are you constantly comenting on what us lowly listeners of terrestial stations listen too? Why because your great satellite radio is not as fulfilling as you claim.

First- Stern is going back to FM, suckas. So get over it. There’s no money to be made in satellite radio and soon enough you’ll have the same ol’ commercials on the radio you pay for each month. Ever heard of cable TV?

Second- All the little Buzz goons/aka 99X rejects need to quit wasting their time posting on here and get their asses out on the street to find some listeners older than 15. Because that’s all they’ve got. Oh, and by rejects, I mean people that 99x got rid of because they were so bad, people like PD Chris Williams, for one…but I don’t want to call anyone else out.

Third- It was the first day. Would YOU want someone judging the work you did on YOUR first day at a new job? Give it a break! They were having a good time! I thought it was really good! Much better than “Whip” in the mornings (speaking of TERRIBLE radio names…he might as well call himself Ryan Seacrest on crack). Any dumbass can talk into a microphone…I’m sorry, Buzz idiots, if you simply don’t have the personality to go along with it.

Fourth- Will Jones, you are a psycho. Get help.

Fifth- Rodney Ho is cool; I freakin’ love reading this blog.

Sixth- Dave is correct. 99x is meant for a higher class of people, and TRG are meant for, um, a “lower” class of people. Like Bush supporters. I kid, I kid…but no, really. And the Buzz is meant for the Generation Dumb-ers.

Some terrestrial stations actually make a PROFIT from quarter to quarter…something that XM and Sirius have failed to do. They overpaid their talent, their costs are too high, and if they don’t merge into one company and get start selling A LOT of commercials within their content they will cease to be.

The Opie & Anthony (+ Jim Norton) show is so much better than any local morning shows. One week on an Atlanta station (and they are on tons of terrestrial stations as well as XM) and they would steal ALL of ratings from Dave, 99x, 96 Rock (esp. men 18-35)

I am actually underwhelmed by XM for music(Ok, I’m a music snob) but the moring shows, talk, news are great.

Ps - I HATED O&A the first two days I had XM.. they take a week or two to get used to

Never in my life have I ever heard such a canned, rehearsed, unoriginal, demographically biased, self-gratifying, cheesy morning show program!! I don’t know who Ms. Fram is paying off to keep her on the air, but the sum must be pretty large!! Those phony fools on the air now sound like poorly recycled cloned DJs from a generic-morningshow-DJ-manufacturing line. The only thing 99X has working for it now is Steve. Sorry, I’m tearing up my Free-loader card and never listening again. I’ll be listening to WBCN in Boston via internet.

I wasn’t going to listen to this morning show, but they must be really cool if they are using the Peanut Butter Jelly Time song…this song is clearly one of the greatist artistic achievements of the modern era. You can see it for yourself at http://www.clappingfetus.com/Flash/peanutbutterjelly.html

I agree with Steve being the best thing on 99X. I don’t mind Leslie because she’s not a huge part of any show that she’s a part of. Its always about the other guys, but she needs to lay off the crack. While its a decent thing she’s doing by giving her friend a job, the new show is quite possibly the worst radio show in Atlanta. Why don’t you just call it the 99x Zoo Crew and call it a day.

By mike

October 3, 2006 3:22 PM | Link to this

I used to listen to 99X every morning. I found Toucher funny but not nearly the star quality of a Howard Stern. Barnes was ok when he was on. Quite frankly I now listen to a combination of The Buzz and The River and from what I heard so far on 99x (I did catch them for a bit on Monday) I’m not changing.

But there is hope. I watched Conan O’Brian’s first few shows and expected him to be pulled off the air in no time. I didn’t watch for years and then caught his show a few years later and it was incredible. Conan rules. So there’s still hope for 99x I guess. But their music format HAS to change. It’s not the mid ’90s any more. The music has to be harder. Of course The Buzz is already in that space…

I hope that when people read this blog they don’t get the idea that the new show is bad! It’s not! I for one was so excited to see something new going on! I’ve been listening to 99X for years now, and I must say that there have been times when I have been less than pleased with music choices and staff (kind of during the Chris Williams/Jimmy Eat Hoobastank days of the early ’00s if I recall correctly), BUT I am a devoted 99X fan and I didn’t give up on them. I hope that the nay-sayers will give it a chance, and I agree with some of the other posters on here that sometimes a show needs a little time to become excellent! And also, I want to point out that Leslie is an amazing woman for putting up with the negativity of the radio world for so long! Go girl!

Here we go again with the wondeful satellite radio listeners telling us not only are we crazy for listening to terrestial radio but we are now considered, gay, losers and let me get this straight under-achievers. How profound! Call the advertisers now terrestial radio has a lock gay under-achieving gay loser.

Is XM/Sirius any different than cable or AOL. when the subscriber growth slows down there are going to need more revenue streams to satisfy Wall Street. They thought Stern and Opie and Anthony would help fuel that subscriber growth but no dice most refused the additional fees. Good for Howard he has all his money but no one to listen too him. He will be back on terrestial radio within 15 months. So where does that leave them two options. First XM/Sirius will probabvly merge and with that will come ads and lots of them because no channel really garners that many listeners so they wil have to blanket all the station to get any penetration with the listeners.

I have had rental cars before with xm and sirius and while I liked it for traveling in far out places with little or no radio stations. Here in Atlanta my needs are fairly met.

Sorry if we get sick of the attention-needing people who like to brag about their shiny new toy to compensate for their true inadequacies.

RTibbs -

I don’t care whether you are gay. However, I can easily see you are indeed a loser who has a poor grasp of written (or typed) English.

Are you a high school graduate? If you are, you should probably consider legal action against whatever school system let you through the cracks.

No one dislikes you because of your preference for radio. They dislike you (at least I do) because you think anyone whose opinion differs from yours, such as liking XM or Sirius, doesn’t need to be on here.

If you think you are so intelligent that your opinion trumps everyone else on this blog, please go (or RETURN) up North.

Your emotional diatribes are worse than my mother before menopause.

Frankly, I get sick of all your negativity to everyone else with who doesn’t kiss your unwashed behind, but I don’t regularly get on here and complain about it (present post not withstanding).

Word.

p.s. I do enjoy the music on Sirius.

If anyone is gainfully employed, or isn’t not too cheap to settle for what regular radio in Atlanta offers, I heartily recommend you subscribe.

I’m sorry for being deceitful everyone.

I wasn’t going to post anymore today but my conscience got the best of me.

I actually already DID know what a “pillow bitter” is. I’ve been in the lifestyle for several years now….and LOVE IT!!!!! If any of my friends heard me say I had to look up what a “pillow biter” is (AS IF!), they would laugh hysterically. I practically invented that term! I’ve gone through more cotton and feathers in my day than Eli Whitney on a duckhunting expo through a cotton field.

Instead of my daddy it was actually my older neighbor Thomas who gave me my first experience…..let me tell you….it changed my life forever. Oh it was glorious!!!

Logistically, I used to work part time for UPS as I am also good at packing fudge….for shipping….heehee Cotton processing isn’t my only speciality as I can handle both ‘shipping’ and ‘receiving’

I hear Sirius has a gay & lesbian channel so I may have to try it.

I’m sorry to you too linda. I truly do hope you find happiness. I will eventually find it in my heart to forgive you for stealing my man from me.

I just don’t want to go on deceiving anyone anymore. I am quite PROUD of who I am. Actually I am currently looking for a special man right now if anyone is interested…..

Yes I am a stupid loser because I don’t understand how the topic of the New Morning X should serve as your soapbox for satellite radio.

Comparing my comments to your mom’s menopause indicates you really must have some mom issues. Maybe you are trying to prove you are better than your mom because you have satellite radios and can listen to all the hits of the 70’s and 80’s. Wow aren’t you impressive.

All these satellite comments boiled down to one point. I don’t like anything on the regular radio and I am cool because I have satellite.
