4/5: 99X’s Big Day Out lineup
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
99X has brought back its “Big Day Out” concert, which went away a few years ago after many many years. (99X went through some years of free concerts instead.) The lineup this year: Chris Cornell, Interpol, the Bravery, Plain White T’s and the Almost.
It will be June 2 at HiFi Buys Amphitheatre, the same day as Star 94’s StarFest. But 99X’s concert will start much earlier. Tickets go on sale April 11 at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster. Tickets range from $9.97 on the lawn to $50 in the pit.

Not much of a lineup. I remember previous big day outs having a longer list of artists

Laaame. The bands are ok. But nothing compared to the last Big Day Out I went to in the late 90s where they had Offspring, MightmUghtyBOsstones, Live, and a bunch of other bands. And the price was 5 bucks and I think it was free if you had a 99x card.I missed Bravery at the last Music Midtown. So is Music Midtown dead for good? that really sucks. Great job Atlanta at driving away the best value a music fest can deliver. 70 bucks for 3 days is chump change compared to 200 plus at Bonnarrooo.

Would anybody really want to waste their time with that kind of line-up. I think I would hold out for Ozzfest and Family Values. Previous years had alot better bands than this. Its no wonder I don’t listen to 99x anymore.

I was at that one too, Praveen…at the Horse Park, right?
Yeah, they need to bring Music Midtown back…all of this work to try and bring folks into the city, and one of the best intown events gets sh!t-canned…

Listening to the Morning X today—they really sounded like they were faking the enthusiasm for the lineup. They were overselling it, to the point where it sounded fake.

It’s a matter of taste. I think that lineup sounds awesome, and I wouldn’t be caight dead at Ozzfest or Family Values - those festivals are crap as far as I’m concerned. It’a matter of taste. 99x is doing pretty well as staying with the genre of music is has targetted through the years. I don’t live in Atlanta anymore, and the city I live in doesn’t have anythng close to 99x. I miss it. The music is representative of music that is growing in popularity. Keep it up 99x.

The lineup is teh lame. Chris Cornell, Plain White T’s, the freakin’ Bravery? What, that band that Kiefer Sutherland pimps was busy that day?
And when was the last time 99X played Interpol? Oh yeah, one song a week on Sunday nights. Last year. For a while.

There is a reason why satellite radio is so huge now…local radio sucks! Especially 99X. That station died about 4 years ago when all the bands became one really crappy band with the same look and sound. The reason why bands from the 80’s and early 90’s still rule in concert is because they have more than one song that has been a hit and the simple fact that music today is the worst it has ever been in 30 years. I’ve never heard of these bands or do I ever want to say that I like a band called Plain white T’s (GAY!). Chris Cornell is good when he sings Soundgarden, Audioslave (2 songs) and Temple of the dog songs, but the solo stuff is pretty much lame. You kids today missed out when good music was all over the place in the 80’s and early 90’s. 99X please give the kids a break and go away.

I think this blog pretty much sums up this tepid (Not So) Big Day Out Line-up. There is also some insightful, tongue in cheek explainations for the demise of Music Midtown here

99x like other radio stations in Atlanta has severely gone down hill. Big Day out will be the next “cheap” concert to go.

OK, whew, I thought it was just me for a second. I listened to them tease yesterday with “Big BDO announcement at 7:20,” then when I came in from work this morning and listened for the announcement, I fell asleep in the garage for a sec. I mean, I haven’t hardly heard of half these bands. When they played clips, they all sounded the same. It sounds like a Q100 event or something. Not that anything’s wrong with Q100s music, if that’s what you’re into, but I thought this was alternative ROCK. I started thinking, man, I miss the old days, the mid-to-late 90s. You know, Counting Crows, Live, Cake, Garbage, heck, even Nickelback, maybe some Josh Joplin band, Ben Folds, Weezer, The Strokes even, White Stripes, Foo Fighters… I mean, I know some of that stuff is old school or broken up and you have to kind of represent sort of the industry moving forward, but there’s still some better talent to put up on stage than this lineup.
The last BDO I went to was back in ‘99, I think, and I should’ve known things were downhill with music in this city, then, because it was one of the last decent music festivals. Music Midtown ‘04 was pretty good, though, I have to admit. Since then, though… shoot. Where’s that dang coach to Coachella?

Lanny, while that link did a humorous putdown of 99x, the thing is that link’s musiccal taste seems pretty lame too. The lineup for music midtown 99x stage was actually pretty decent - Killers, Interpol, White Stripes, Pixies, Devo together on one stage plus the acts on the other stages for 70 bucks is a bargain. Killers alone sold out this year for tickets that were pricier than the whole Music Midtown bill.

Crap lineup. What is the deal with Atlanta’s concert scene? Pearl Jam and Guns n Roses skipped ATL on their recent tours, Ozzfest has not been here since 2002, The Police reunion has no Atlanta date. Whatever happened to Peter Colon after Alex Cooley retired?

Here is the deal with Atlanta and it’s concert scene. It’s hip hop or nothin’ nowhuti’msayn… Conlin & Cooley are done because Atlanta radio is as bad as it can possibly get. The good ole days of another B-52’s, REM, Black Crowes, Panic or even Marv 3 coming around is remote at best. This is no longer a music town and hip hop ain’t music, it’s noise with a beat. Seriously people, why is 99x still around? It’s absolute crap radio.

Is it a lame line-up? Or are you all just falling out of touch with what is up and coming? Lose the has-been, Chris Cornell, and everyone else is pretty much on the cutting edge. If you aren’t aware, The Almost is Aaron Gillespie’s (Underoath) side project - album released earlier this week

You mean people listen to 99x? You couldn’t pay me to go to that crappy concert.
And Tim, it’s not all hip hop or nuthin. There are plenty of great acts that come through this city. In the next two months alone there’s Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Ratatat, TV on the Radio, Norah Jones w/ M. Ward, Sun Volt, Bright Eyes w/ Gillian Welch, Bela Fleck, Wilco(in June) etc.
If you’re asking yourself who these bands are, you need to stop listening to packaged crap like 99x and get out and discover new music.

Cornell’s new solo stuff sounds good. Plus he’s doing stuff from Soundgarden and Audioslave on this tour. Probably some Temple of the Dog stuff too.

I just wonder why Interpol agreed to do the show.

Interpol is a freaking awesome band. Shins, Arcade Fire and Interpol are recent bands that are doing everything correctly.
Then on the same bill you have The Bravery. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

I see people asking “what happened to Cooley and Conlon”? COOLEY left, that’s what! Music Midtown was badly mis-managed by Alex’s sad replacement. I know several guys who have been financially bullied and screwed over through dealings with him, so, guess what, folks? If you’re ruled by dollars and not the love of MUSIC…what do we GET? We get what we HAVE. No REAL big name ticket acts anymore, just all these has-been’s and wannabe’s.

Beth - you mentioned Cake…they are on the line-up now too. Last time they were in town was for the 99x Downtown Rocks free shows.
Marvelous 3 broke up. But Butch is coming in 2 weeks!! :)
Nickelback is poppy bullsh!t. Leave them to Star 94 where they belong.

Who are these bands? If you are going to call it the Big Day Out, you better have some Big Name Bands. Looks like the Bonnaroo fest is the only alternative for Atlantans these days.

Oh, BTW I’m listening to my satellite radio right now. 99X, how many times have they tried to reinvent themselves since Barnes left? I think their next format will be Salsa. Senorita Fram! Exactly how does she manage to hold on to her position throughout all of these changes? I wonder is Leslie habla espanol?

Interpol is way awesome, but the rest of the line up is lame.
Satellite radio might be a decent alternative, but non-commercial stations, like WREK and WRAS, are free and they are fantastic.

Yeah, Interpol is fine, but 99X never plays them. They are just reaching to find any band they can use to sell tickets. And Cake!? Yeesh, who’s next…Rehab? Talk about a retread. Lame line-up!

Come see us, the Black Crows at the Airport Hilton that very same weekend. We are not washed up, we just never should have been as popular as we were.
