4/18: Collins Spencer out at WSB-TV
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

I try not to veer away from radio but occasionally, people ask me about TV personalities. At least 15 people have emailed me about WSB-TV’s Collins Spencer. As those people may have figured, he’s out. He was let go last week for unknown reasons though I don’t hear that it was anything salacious. He replaced Warren Savage, who left in the fall of 2005. So Spencer was only around for 18 months.
Bill Hoffman, the general manager at WSB-TV, praised Spencer’s community service but declined to comment further. He also didn’t comment on Spencer’s performance on air.
Spencer, who I haven’t been able to reach for comment, had worked at CNN and Fox News prior to WSB-TV.

He will be missed. He did a great job, and it didn’t hurt that he was a cutey.

In this “Right to Work” State employers have the upper hand. WSB TV should have shared with the views the fact that he was off the air.

Now watch Jesse and AL say it wa racist if they hire a white person. WSB was getting a little too dark.

It’s my understanding that they waited until he came off the air. Supposedly he left to get something to eat and they called him on his cellphone and told him not to come back. He was allowed into the building days later, accompanied by security guards, to retrieve his belongings. How dirty.

To Anonymous: Uh… What? are you serious?
TO Who Cares: It’s amazing that you live in 2007 and still see everything in black and white. Wow! what a relic!
In short, though… he’ll be missed.

They could have made an announcement or something… I really liked seeing him in the morning on the news… he was a good co-anchor…
To Who Cares… oh please try something more original… and if it is the “darkness” you are worrying about… then move to Antartica…! or the MOON… this is Atlanta…

I can’t beleive he’s gone. I thought he was great. What a wonderful edition to drab WSB. I wish him success wherever he is.

What is Collins co-anchor’s name and what is her story. Does she have a pass while the better anchors get fired? In case WSB has not heard, younger people are often opionated and not as easy to manage; however, they are also valuable to our world. I want to ask them if they would not mind choosing a few and keeping them there. I am very disappointed in their management of their news talent.

I just want to know why isn’t it reported when an anchor leaves? They report about everything and everyone else in the world and locally? Why not their own?
Why are we reading about it on the web?

Rodney J — the “Right to Work” is a two-way street. If you find something better, you can quit your job without notice too.

“Right to work” doesn’t count if you are under contract as almost EVERY Anchor is. While Anchors/Reporters could conceivably “just quit” they wouldn’t be allowed to work in the business for the duration of the contract and locally during a follow-up “non-compete” period of typically 6-months to one-year. Employers on the other hand, usually have an annual “window” (60-90 days near the end of the contract year) to opt out of the remainder of the contract for any reason at all. They don’t have to pay the ousted Anchor for the remaining years…and rest assured, they still hold most on-air people to the previously mentioned “non-compete” (and nonpaid period of time)…even though THEY were the ones who didn’t want to keep the Anchor. This “right to work” state is entirely geared toward protecting the employer and keeping the unions out!! Collins is a very nice guy…his quick, unremarkable exodus seems an indicator that you will likely see him on another Atlanta station (the competition) as soon as his non-compete clause is up!!

I am sorry to see him go. He did a MUCH better job on air than Clarence Reynolds does on 11 Alive.

It’s about time he was let go. Now get rid of Pam and Karen. I’ve watched WSB morning show since age 10. I remember Pam on WAGA, Karen having he kids. With HDTV NOONE looks great, but with Pam- WSB got a great face lift; with Karen extensions (which need to be replaced by now. unfortunately, there wasn’t surgery for his eye and his half cocked smile. The entire morning show needs to be dumped since they repeat the exact same reports every 10-17 minutes. Film it once and repeat instead of spending all that money on salaries, and a pretty set. In the morning it is still drab drab drab. Collins, glad to see you gone, and hope you can find something better than WSB’s tired show. Even with all the negative I can only say that I am addicted to it. And now my kids have become attached to the format.

JJBeanhead — If he has a semi-decent agent, he gets paid for the duration of the contract if he’s let go before it terminates. If not, he should find a better agent.

But if he was terminated for cause — which no one seems to know at this point — then he should get zip.

Way to go WSB. Collins was a fake. He lacked personality and genuineness with the viewing public. That’s why WSB new it was better to shorten is air-time. Now hopefully they’ll get rid of that phony, overzealous Jaquitta Williams!

I agree with PUZZLED… what does Pam Martin have that the other anchors did not have… she is just as bland… she has to know where somebody hid a body or something to keep that post so long!

Glad he’s gone. Seems like a nice guy, but with zero presence, he should not be on anybody’s camera…

I enjoyed seeing Collins in the morning. I think WSB could have planned us viewers about the change. The way that it was done leads one to believe that his leaving is suspect.

I never knew there were so many bigots and idiots in Atlanta until I opened this page. We are all supposed to be the same in God’s eyes. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about “nicole”, “who cares”& “by truth be told”, judging me. My gosh, you are TRULY IGNORANT. Get your facts straight and try putting “blinders” on when looking at skin complexion. It seems you all weren’t present when brains were given to us all. People like you all are the main reason we as a country, are in the present state thatwe are. I could say more, but why try to reason with fools! Needless, to say any job that we as blacks have, we got it because we had to work twice as hard for recognition while you got by on your white roots.

I find it interesting, I don’t know what Collins did to lose his job or if the viewers are just weird, I will say this, I stopped watching WSB a long time ago, because I did not feel connected with that station. However, I tuned in again when Collins came on board. Now I’m back to watching Fox 5 in morning. I will never watch channel 11 in the morning because I never felt a connection with Ms. Jill. I’ll watch Fox 5 in the morning, because they seem more real than the other two networks.
Good luck, Collins, this happended for a reason. Leave JaQuitta alone, people should not be so judgemental because she’s got a bubbly personality, her work is outstanding.
Since most American’s are so critical, let’s trade places with some of our news personalities and see how well we would handle their jobs.

I watch WSBTV every day. To be honest, he is very handsome. But he did make a lot of mistakes, he always was mispronouncing words and starting the wrong report. I could tell he would not last long.
