6/6: Porsche talks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Porsche Foxx made her announcement returning to V-103 on air at 8 a.m. She’ll be handling mid-days, replacing Osei the Dark Secret, starting July 9.
“It’s been two and a half years,” she told Frank Ski and Wanda Smith in the morning at the Colony Square studios. “I often look back especially the last couple of days. If I could change anything, I’m not so sure I would. I’m a better woman today. I’m more resilient. I make better decisions.”
These are her first public comments since the days after her DUI in December, 2005. (She was fired by V-103 soon after.)
In a brief press conference after her announcement, she denied that V-103 approached her to replace Magic Man in the fall of 2005 but said she’s been in constant contact with her boss and V-103 general manager Rick Caffey. “We’ve maintained that relationship, which has been very special,” she said.
As for her time in alcohol rehab, she said, “It was successful, very enlightening, very educational. I’m not afraid to talk about it.” Will she do so on the air next month?” “It’s a possibility but I do want to move forward.”
She spent her interim time since rehab in the fall of 2005 rebuilding her house, which burned down in the March of 2005 and focusing on her recovery. “It was time to take care of me,” she said. “I had a lot going on. I had a lot on my shoulders. After the arrest, if it was up to me, I would have gone back to work the next day, but I wasn’t ready for that. Everything is in order. I feel good.”
Porsche said she’s been sober since rehab. “I’m a better person,” she said, with help from family, friends and prayer.
Osei will be working at a CBS station in D.C. full time, but maintain a weekend shift at V-103.

V103HATER, you need to release the hate. Why make it so personal, it sounds to me that you maybe sound would be fantasy lover that might have been rejected. Porsche spoke with conviction this morning and accepted her mistakes of the past which we all have to do.
She has to look at herself in the mirror every morning and I pretty sure that she is thankful for her storm in her life and know that it has made her a better person.
Whatever your personal issues with her you need to deal with it press on. As for me and my house, we are going to listen to PORSCHE FOXX ROCK THA BOXXX.

Standing on the fence post with this one. Don’t know which side to get on. V-103 has been off its kilter without Porsche. Entertaining has been a lil low in the city without our girl. Porsche could motivate and had such a open heart. The silence has been hard to take. Can’t do nothing but tune in and which has been hard to do. This might quench some of the thirst for what’s missing in Atlanta radio. Welcome back Porsche.

Porsche was cool, it’s the station overall that I don’t like. So no, I don’t listen regularly, I only listen to certain spots…like Sunday Morning Praise with Larry Tinsley. Ryan is pretty good, and I may listen to Porsche if I’m in the car at the time, but I won’t stream it into my office because they play too much crap (inapporpriate music). Welcome back Porsche!!

Ahhhh! I remember that, Tyra… Let your haters be your motivators! I’m glad she’s back. I probably won’t listen to her, but I’m glad to know they didn’t totally kick her to the curb. No one is perfect!!! I thought it was kinda wrong that they out right fired her instead of letting her get the help needed and stand by her publicly while she did. Denouncing her as a DJ with them was just…. I don’t know, hasty. If it was someone of another race would the same would have occurred? NO! I have nothing against Ms. Foxx and I am glad to hear she is a better person and yes I will probably listen, but sometimes when a decision is made sometimes we need to stick to our guns (V-103 general manager). What type of message are we sending to our young people? Yes, everyone makes mistakes and sometimes we can regain, but I have a hard time accepting that people with a certain type of status are given “special” treatment.
My feelings are mixed concerning her return, but who am I to judge.
Ms. Foxx stay strong and remember your job touch many lives and even though you are human just as your listeners, we expect for you to make positive decisions and changes. The next generaion is watching and listening.

Let’s see the only reason I listen to V-103 is for Ryan Cameron. The ONLY REASON. He’s the best, but Elle has GOT TO GO.

First and foremost, we should applaud Porche Foxx’s effort of getting her life back together, and retaining her job back on V-103. Although the station has changed drastically, I believe it is stil a powerfull vehical for its listeners, which happen to mostly be African-Americans. Whitey, how can you say its a thug radio station. As I recall there are sereveral prominent, educated and sophisticated people that tune into V-103 on a daily basis. If you didnt’ notice, V-103 and 790theZone, along with WXIA-Ch.11 are the official stations for the ATlanta Falcons. That’s why you constantly hear Mike Vick. And to be honest, that another conversation.. I think you need to reconsider your statement, by sayint its the official thug station. I question your educational background and upbringing, because its people like you that makes this a ‘Dirty World.’ No offense, but your ‘sure are dumb’.

I’m glad to see Porche back. I don’t really think their sending the wrong message to anyone. I think that she had a problem, she says she fixed it, and she’s able to come back and do her job now. It’s showing people that no one is perfect and that everyone has problems. I don’t think that the shame should be in having the problem but in not asking for the help that you need.

You can go to the Ghettos and see a BLACK women with 3 or 4 beby daddys trying to get money from each one, and you can go to the trailor park and see WHITE women with the same thing. Well said, there are black women that are very well raised and educated, they HAVE to be a bread winners so they can raise the children the black men are impregnating them with. I’m glad to see Porche back. I don’t really think their sending the wrong message to anyone. I think that she had a problem, she says she fixed it, and she’s able to come back and do her job now. It’s showing people that no one is perfect and that everyone has problems. I don’t think that the shame should be in having the problem but in not asking for the help that you need.

Just remember that for every one white woman in high PLACES there are now three black women. The difference between black women and white women is this……we as African American Women were taught to stand on our own and BE a bread winner. Not that anyone from V-103’s staff will read this; but I question their “commitment” to the community. I believe in second chances but what example are they setting??? Hopefully Porsche will use her poor judgment to reach out to young people. But this IS the same station that promoted an R. Kelly party this past weekend. Excuse me!? Their DJs defend negative rap artists and horrid behavior. The station really needs to work on its image. I thought they were catering to the teenage crowd but even my 15 year old says they suck. So which demographic are they aiming for? What happened to the V-103 of Mike Roberts and Robin Roberts? I guess that’s why 102.5 Radio One is gaining ground - because they cater to a more mature audience and is far more entertaining and informative.
Note to CBS Radio local management: I love WAOK (wish they could swap frequencies). Right now V-103 is a waste of airtime from dawn until the Quiet Storm).

I work for a gov’t agency (thanks Diversity Hiring Policies) and the actual number of black households on welfare are much higher than caucasian households.
Households are families with a male as head of household. There are fewer black males as head of households, more whites as head of households…per capita.
So to recap, there are statistically more blacks on welfare than whites…per capita.
Latinos are quickly advancing on blacks as abusers of govt programs.
By 2017 Latinos will be the new “majority minority” and blacks will be just above Asians in this country.
And to whom do you think politicians will cater to then?
Who will get the benefits that many of my brothers and sisters claim to be owed?

I’ll say this — V103 sure knows how to exploit a situation for attention.
I also know this — remember when she was arrested, Ms. Foxx denied doing anything wrong when she was caught and then blamed the media for blowing it out of proportion. Did she apologize for lying to herself and others - especially children and young people who go way over board in listening to radio personalities and believing in their fake personas?
I’m in between on this one. I belive in second chances for anyone. You always want to see anyone take back their lives and rebuild. But I also don’t like how we in the black community will always act like nothing has happened and way too quickly forgive famous folks and personalities who’ve done wrong. Drinking, drugging and then driving kills people — even by those who give away tickets, money and whatever else on the air and even have some children’s foundation.

Even though I live in Fayetteville, NC, I have followed V-103 for the past few years and I listen to the station on-line every day because I love it so much. Porsche Foxx’s announcement today brought tears to my eyes. It is a wonderful feeling to see someone get a second chance and Foxx is more than deserving of a second chance. There is a gospel song I just listened to entitled “If There Is No Rain In Your Life” by J. Mac and the Innerfaith Chorale. The point of the song is that if you do not go through adversity, you will not grow. I believe with the hail storm Porsche has endured over the past two years and a half years, she is about to grow into a beautiful flower and, in the process, bless millions of lives.

I am glad that Wanda is on with Frank because whenever she is on vacation/out of the office the show is DEAD/BORING without her. Even though sometimes she is a little loud. I have to turn my radio down to a lower volume. I don’t see how in the world Frank was so called #1 in Baltimore. He probably didn’t have much competition. Obviously I think that every one is hoping that Ms. Calhoun’s recovery continues—but what about the trust factor, in the fact that she made some very untruthful statements upon her arrest.
It concerns me that those who are quick to criticize people on here who have real issues about Ms. Calhoun seem to be giving her a free pass in the area of character and integrity. The DUI doesn’t bother me as much as making public statements that were not true and then not apologizing for it.
I suppose that this is yet another by-product of this “whatever” attitude that exists today.

I didn’t like Porsche when she was on the first time so it doesn’t matter to me that she is back. I don’t judge her for her mistakes or praise her for returning. Porshe Foxx will make the difference on V103. (The others are also alcholics but have not been caught.Period)She is real and have changed many lives as they all have. The difference with Porshe is she has the ability to relate and never gave the impression she was better than her listeners. The morning show loves to tell the listeners of their material possessions and that exemplifies their lack of self-confidence. Porshe is just real and made ALL feel special and necessary. Concerning Ms. Foxx, personal feelings and comments be they good or bad opinions are to be respected. People do things sometimes willingly and sometimes by accidents; or by rushing into situations which cause the public to draw or form conclusions. Ms. Foxx return to V-103 is a manager decision but the public has the overall say in the ratings. Sometimes when people assume the worst, it never turns out to be that very way. Sometimes, those in the public eyes makes enemies and people wish the worse for them. The playing field in the business of entertainment is never level. Put yourself in Ms. Foxx place; someone mentioned Mr. Vicks, and some will include several other names or situations; all of them makes impact on the very lives they are pointed to. Who knows, Ms. Foxx might be hurting still about the incident she was involved in. Her feelings makes her look unhappy even if she is trying to be happy. We are very easy to hurt people just by our actions and the words we use. If Ms. Foxx is honest and feel bad about what she did, then, its going to tell off on her in the direction she will go. V-103 holds nothing in general for her; other than employment. It her sole and heart she has to deal with. Emotion can either cure or brake a person spirits and in time they too, will return to doing what they normal do; or just fade into the crowd and never be heard of again. In this case, we shall all see where Ms. Foxx will go!

As a native Atlantan and a journalist, I’m really saddened and tickled by some of these comments. It really disappoints me that racism still exists in such a beatifully growing and diverse city. I love Atlanta and I’ve been here all my life, born in Crawford Long and raised from Adamsville to Cobb County to Fayetteville. People up north thought southerners were too stupid and slow to progress, but Atlanta is thriving proof that isn’t true, yet you have people on here focusing on issues that happend centuries ago. If you ignore ignorance, who will be aggravated by it? I’m only 21 years old and I just graduated from college and I work in a newsroom where I am the only black reporter. I hear stupid racist comments everyday, some deliberate and some not. But I come in and do my job and I know I’m making a difference in my life and in the community. If everybody made a conscious effort to make a positive change, just imagine how powerful our city would be? I hate to see my hometown go down like this.

I’m a young black women, I have a one year old son and his father is there every step of the way taking care of his family. I have a college degree and I’m working on my Master’s not because I have to but because I want to. I work for Fulton County and the mass major of man here in my building are married with children AND they are BLACK man. So the .5% whitey gave can easily be refuted. You should not embrace Porsche Foxx, you should be OUTRAGED. If African Americans are truly to make advancements in society, they need to stop protecting fellow African Americans and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE for their actions. V-103 should be ASHAMED that it had to resort to hiring Ms. Foxx - this sends the message to the African American community that it is okay to drink & drive, to smoke pot and to (allegedly) burn down your own home. This is the WRONG message to send.

Leah, I feel what you are saying a lot. I think V103 has its moments. I really don’t know of this woman Porsche Foxx but good luck to her. In the morning I skim between Steve Harvey and Frank and Wanda Morning Shows (the A Team on occasion)! Frank is a bit contradictory to me and I know we all are guilty of that. However we all are not in the limelight like he is. I feel he is a positive influence overall, but it fades from time to time. Going from inspirational vitamins to wanting to ball out with young jeezy. I’ll give him his credit for being a good DJ at the velvet room. The 112 thing I don’t understand. Come on brotha… You are in ya 40s!! Wanda sounds like a scorned woman who cringes at giving positive black men any Kudos. To those people who are complaining, the only way to make your opinion in radio is to turn the channel. Tell the survey people who call you don’t listen to the station anymore. But they have the bigger signal, so they come in crystal clear so a lot of people tune in just so they can have some “noise” in the background of work. I turned off V-103 awhile ago, loaded up my iPod with my mixes of Pop, Rock, R&B & Hip-Hop and haven’t look back. People stop stressing about a life that isn’t yours, do your thing!

I am a white woman with a bi-racial child, with a black man who isn’t even my son’s father. He has been with me since I was 3 months pregnant and my son is 1 now! He takes care of me and my son. Although we both work full-time jobs while my son is in daycare. You all need to get a life. You missed the whole point of the blog. To comment on PORSCHE FOXX not racism! I believe everyone deserves a second chance! She paid her dues and probably went through a really tough time in rehab. Alcoholism is extremely hard to deal with. My mom’s dad suffered with it. I give her major props! Do your thing girl! I don’t even listen to the station. I listen to 107.9, but still congratulations on being sober girl!!

Listening to V-103 is disappointing. The music AND the on-air personalities (especially Wanda and Sophia) perpetuate such ignorance! It’s too bad such a great city has such poor public representation. I think Ryan and Elle have a good thing going, it’s entertaining and good to hear voices that don’t cry for a voice coach or grammar lesson. As for Porche, I am glad she is a “better woman”, that transformation was WAY past due.

I wonder if any of you who are saying negative things about Porche or V-103 have ever called in to the station and said it to someone who can actually make a difference about the station. Though I do agree with whoever said they miss the days of Mike Roberts, that’s what I grew up listening to in the morning and Carol Blackmon before she went all Holyfield. Atlanta has gotten a lot better but a lot worse in the same sense and honestly it does break my heart.

She obviously is very good at her profession and it’s not a matter of right or wrong in her personal life. I don’t have a problem with Ms. Foxx’s return on the airwaves. However, the Jocks on V-103 must be more aware when speaking negative on others because we all have our faults. The only issue I had with Ms. Foxx is when she made personal attacks on celebs like Whitney, LiL Kim & others in the news. We all know it’s her job to report the news but personal bashing by the V-Jocks is not needed. Frank, Wanda, Mr. Sophia & others be aware that your face could be on the front page as well. And as a former listener we all could care less about your personal lives or where you live and what you drive. Elle, no one cares about Kolbe. Frank who cares LiL Franklin has a cell phone? I am so excited about Porsche’s return to v-103. She was always my favorite Dj on the sation—her and Tony Jackson together. I miss her “FOX EFFECTS” and “ISSUES” shows. They really brought substanance to the station and now that they are no longer there…v-103 is really missing something. It was fun to just be a listner in rush hour traffic, because Porsche really did jam you home.
Now all they have is sorry ass Frank Ski, wanna be sexy Wanda Smith, and Confused I don’t know whether I’m really a woman or a man Ms. Sophia. They are all so lame, so boring, and so fake!
