6/22: Dave FM program director out
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Program directors in radio don’t last very long. I started covering radio in September 2001. I think only three PDs of major radio stations are still in their jobs from that time that I can think of: Dan Bowen at Star 94, Pete Spriggs at WSB-AM and Kevin Avery at Fish.

Z93 went through two before they switched to Dave FM in 2004. Michelle Engel was the first PD for the new station. While a lot of PDs are puppets to their masters above, I got the impression Michelle really did have a lot of say to design this station so I’m giving her more space here on my blog than I typically do for other fired PDs.
I actually interviewed her at my previous job when she was PD at a successful Portland, OR ’80s station (KVMX-FM, Mix 107.5, now a dance-pop station) — in fact, it was arguably the most successful 80s station in the country. For reasons I could never quite ascertain, over her three years at Dave, she pretty much ignored me. But alas, three years is actually a long stretch for a PD in this market. She gets major props for that.
Ratings for Dave have never been particularly impressive but financially, it hasn’t done badly because it reaches a viable demographic of rock fans ages 25 to 49 and advertisers like it. The station recently cut out most current songs but otherwise, formatically, it remains the same mildly eclectic mix of ’70s (Bowie, Pink Floyd), ’80s (Depeche Mode, INXS), ’90s (Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam) and 00s (Fray, Norah Jones.) One thing I knew about Engel is she is a huge jam band fan and at least she got to go to Bonnaroo before she was released from duty.
This is what she told a trade publication Radio and Records last year about the station after it moved to a positioning statement of “Music Matters Here.”
“The key to the success of triple A [adult alternative] stations across the country has been its dedication to and respect for the music,” Engel tells R&R. “Two years in we feel it is time to make sure Dave FM does everything it can to honor the music and artists it plays. We are tickled and excited about these changes and what it will mean for the station as we move forward.”
I have no clue why Engel was let go. Her replacement is Mike Wheeler, who briefly had the thankless job of Atlanta region programming VP for Clear Channel Radio before being let go last year.
For now, her bio page on Dave is here but could be taken down at any time. She would occasionally fill in on air.
Here is part of her statement on the site:
It is mandatory that 929 dave fm reflect the soundtrack of our area and generation, which we believe has been lost in the shuffle. Our iPods and CD collections are diverse and vast - not just one kind of music. They include vintage music from the 60s and 70s, local Icons such as the Black Crows[sic] and Widespread Panic, pillars like REM, U2 and Dave Matthews, as well as the amazing gems from the 80’s and all that the mid 90’s had to offer, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Coldplay and, frankly, any kind of music that makes us feel good and nostalgic. THAT is what 929 dave fm is all about.
We aren’t a standard radio station. We don’t live and play by the rules that large corporations define. We change our music to reflect the day. Our air talent represents the area and those with whom we are speaking. Our artists see the station as a haven, as a place where it isn’t about one song from their album, but about their true art. We strive to be Radio Without Rules.

Another one bites the dust! PD’s that come up with formats that lose 50%+ of their stations listeners should be terminated, er, I mean “given new opportunities for personal growth.”
An optimal station has to have a wider mix than The River and a narrower mix than DaveFM. If they put some more Rock & Roll into the mix I’d give them another chance. How ‘bout some Bob Segar, eh?

I think Dave is the best station in ATL. However, I fit smack dab in the middle of their target demo. (Mid 30’s, solid income, etc.), I can understand how some feel the format may be a bit narrow. I listen to Dave from 8-5 Mon-Fri. at work and have noticed that they have not only stopped playing new artists, but they have also really cut back on classic artists. (Stones, Allmans, Led Zep, Neil Young) I feel they need to bring these back.
I understand that this format is not intended to break new artists, but I generally liked they few they put into rotation. What I don’t understand is why they do not embrace new albums released by artists they currently play. For example Pearl Jam put out an excellent album last year, and I heard one song, one time. Yet them play Alive and Evenflow, and others several times a week.
Hopefully the new PD will expand the playlist and really become “Radio without Rules”, and not change formats completely. A few tweaks will do.

Frankly, it is a refreshing station to listen to MOST OF THE TIME. The rest of the time, it is WAY to soft. Not to get personal, but it is a bit too “chick rockish”. The soft prog stuff needs to be replaced with more live rock cuts. It IS what the true music fans really want anyway.

It would be nice if a few more PD’s were replaced. The Atlanta area radio is the worse radio I have ever seen. I travel a lot and rarely do I run across an area as bad. Even talk radio in this town sucks.

I hear ya, Steeledawg. I don’t listen to Dave as much as you do, but when I do turn it on I generally hear the same stuff. A few years ago, there was more of a “wow” factor there — as in, “Wow! It’s a great older song that I haven’t heard seven million times!” or “Wow! That new band I read about on the Internet last week is getting some airplay here.” Instead, two of the last three times I’ve tuned into Dave, the song that was on was Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” And the other time I tuned in, I heard U2. Of course.
I’d love to hear more Southern rock, folk rock, live cuts, and local bands. Surely Dave can cut into its daily Police / U2 / INXS quota for something like that? Also, I’d LOVE if Margot was allowed to bring back her fantastic “Dave After Tomorrow” show!

David, It’s just always been that way. Radio is bad here relative to most any major or mid-major city and just never seems to get better. Hard to figure. Sports talk is amazingly poor for a city this large.

I am 24 and have a fairly exhaustive interest in music and when listening to local terrestrial radio (in particular at work), I listen to DaveFM. I love my Sirius and tend to frequent JamOn, Left of Center, Lithium, and The Spectrum on Sirius.
Dave has an ok mix, but I would like to see them expand their playlist more. Less 80’s (and ditch the awful Retro in the Metro show) would be a start, as well as more new music that would probably appeal to their target demographic and help developing artists.
Sometimes though, their promotion is the biggest thing that baffles me. 1) Dave was pushing their Circle of Friends with Wilco hard and yet during the 2 week buildup to it, I think I heard Wilco once and that was during the lunch program. 2) They were also pushing Bonnaroo, and I understand the primary emphasis of that was the Police, but how about some scattered String Cheese Incident, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Lily Allen, My Morning Jacket, or other Bonnaroo-friendly (though not necessarily traditional jam bands) bands for some cross-promotion?

I have to agree with David N. Atlanta radio is probably the worst big market stations in the country…How many more times can I hear Toe Jam…backed up by ‘All Apologies’ by Nerdvana. I know they are great bands but enough is enough. What happened to the major songlist structure? Again we could have a lot more music on the station then again Blondie, The Fray (how do you know your gay..you listen to the Fray and COLDPLAY!) How about some more CCR, even some mild Deep Purple. I do like the initial concept that has come out for radio stations but there are lot more songs that can be thrown into the rotation. DaveFM could learn from a tiny station in Charleston, SC. 96 WAVE FM. One of the best radio stations in the country with their format. Atlanta radio still has a lot to learn… AND PLEASE no Bob Seger…we all heard enough of him of the days of 96 Rock.

I have to agree Kevin. Segar did have some great stuff, but no more shoving it on us please. I think bands like Atlanta Rythym Section and Little Feat should get more airplay. Great Southern Roots for a Great Southern City. Let’s keep it that way! If there needs to be NEW bands played, then get into some of the Jammers that sound like (above)…Panic, Freddy Jones, Outformation…

I was initially very encouraged by the programming at Dave FM. I notice a shift last fall. I started hearing dinosaurs like Queen, Dire Straits and Steve Miller. WTF? I wish Atlanta had a commercial station like 92 WZEW in Mobile, AL. WZEW plays an eclectic mix of alternative and Americana plus lots of specialty shows on weekends. Its a shame that Atlanta radio is so horrible. I am very grateful for my i-pod and XM.

Atlanta radio sucks. Period. It has for almost a decade now. You want to hear a AAA station that is just as good as 99X was back when it had balls? Check out www.lightning100.com out of Nashville. It’s the last of the great stations.
Listen to it and demand a station of its quality in the Atlanta area.

Dave FM has been pretty much my station of preference BECAUSE they played the new stuff along with past favorites. Hey, I may be a baby boomer and love what I grew up with, but I like to know what’s going on these days too - there’s a lot of terrific music out there! Don’t want to be totally out of the loop. Guess I’ll have to start switching around a whole lot more.

Son Volt, Wilco, White Stripes, Arcade Fire, The National, etc. are the “new bands” my friends and I are listening and talking about. I think all of these would fit nicely into Dave’s playlist.
At one time it seemed that Dave had a good relationship w/Paste magazine, they should really use that resource that is based in their backyard to help out.

I go back and forth between NPR and DaveFM, and odd choice, probably - but I can barely stomach harder rock. [OK - I’m a chick, I’m entitled that.] But I must say that there is a lot of good music out there that fits into DAVE’s format that never gets played, whether new or old by their “Dave artists”. Everytime I turn on the radio it’s David Bowie with Queen again. Man, that gets old FAST. Message to new PD: MIX IT UP A LITTLE MORE PLEASE!

Atlanta radio? I’ve gone public. “Blues in the Morning” on 89.3FM on my commute to work. Driving home from 6pm-8pm is the refreshing 1690AM (AM!) where DJ Scott Glazer mixes it up as well as educates with music genres from jazz to country to rock to bluegrass, and then some. Other than that, there’s 91.9FM in the evenings Monday thru Thursday. “Mainstream” radio in Atlanta is rife with artists that are played over and over and over beyond death, such as the Rolling Stones. Spare me the agony.

Flip it back to Z93 with the Dunhams Sunday nights and Blues Sunday (instead of DAVE ripping off Organic X with their “Acoustic Sunrise” - that’s just low). Keep Mara, bring back Willard, put in syndicated morning drive jocks, and flip it the hell back. Hell, Margot can stay too. Holly Firfer is a joke.
I like to hear some Stevie Ray Vaughan so keep doing that, new PD. Thanks.

Oh god, it’s good to know that the person responsible for jam band programming is on the way out. Jam bands have a small dedicated audience that is small and dedicated for a reason. Nothing I hated more than having to reach for the dial to switch it away on widespread wednesdays or whatever they had.
It seems like your choices if you want to hear good music these days are either Lincoln Park type crap which is technically new but not very good and just kind of left over Soundgarden/Alice in chains or try 88.5/Left of Center on Sirius/XMU on XM. I prefer the satellite options to 88.5 these days because they’re playing too much bad “underground” r&b/hip hop these days.
If I were a DaveFM programming directory I’d try to play at least one new song a week that was out there and not just the fray’s new song. To give you a great example, they pumped the Modest Mouse show when they came to town, but I didn’t hear a single Modest Mouse song. This isn’t even some sort of edgy breakthrough band, they had a huge hit in 2004 with “Float On” and had at least 3 or 4 songs on their new release that were radio friendly.
C’mon, less Widespread Panic bootlegs and more new cuts. Now that we don’t have Tower Records anymore there isn’t any place you can go to easily get exposed to new stuff that’s out there.

Are you kidding me Rodney? You didn’t think Michelle was a corporate puppet? She switched DAVE from Rock without Rules to Music Matters and then tightened the stations play list, pretty much made Margot’s MD job pointless as she made all of the programming decisions herself and then to add insult to injury canceled Margot’s Thursday night program that actually played new music and had new artists in the studio. Acoustic Sunrise? What a joke. And is anybody tired of hearing The Fray. Those singles are over a year old now!!!
I personally stopped listening completely two weeks ago. It was like listening to an oldies station with the same songs on the same rotation at the same time of day, everyday! Not to mention daytime DJ Mara and her Hollywood who-gives-a-crap fawning. I seriously think she wishes she could be on TV Guide or Access Hollywood TV but isn’t attractive enough to pull it off. And that’s being polite.
If only corporate radio would realize that the way to stem the tide of declining revenues is provide the content that listeners want. Not tell listeners what they should be listening to. I can only hope that the new PD keeps Margot around and gives her more decision making in the process or, hell, make her the new PD. Not like she hasn’t done it before.

I agree - Dave is playing the same old songs and same old bands excessiveyl. Like 99x for adults. Bring back the variety, bring back the no rules. Bring more Americana/AAA music to our airwaves: Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Wilco, Patty Griffin. Enough of the Police, the fray, u2, inxs, Jack Johnson. VARIETY. NEW STUFF. Loved Dave when it first started but just like the rest of Atlanta radio, got to be too much of the same crap. Holly Firfir? Are you kidding me? WORSE on air “personality (since she has none)” EVER! Don’t let Mara talk as much as she does. Keep Sully and Margot, who knows a ton of music history and shares it.
Also, the “this person wrote this song in the shower while in prison. Find out who that is coming up.” Who cares. Just play the freaking music!
PLEASE go back to ROCK without rules.

FM radio playlists are decided by PHONE SURVEYS…who participates in this? They say yes to songs they know and no to songs they have not heard. That’s why there are 10 stinkin’ songs on a playlist…
I like 90% of what Dave FM plays, just it needed some variety.
Get XM and you will never listen to Atlanta radio again.
FRED, Deep Tracks, Big Tracks, Top Tracks. There is everything that DAVE FM plays plus 100,000 more songs..

Where to begin? Holly Firfir is a joke! The worst on air “Personality” (i.e., she has none) ever.
Too much repitition in rotation: the police, fray, u2, inxs, jack johnson. same old same old all the time. Variety. Play REAL AAA music: Lucinda Williams, Wilco, Ryan Adams to name a few. Bring back Dave After Tomorrow - one of the best radio shows in a long time. Margot knows her stuff - USE her knowledge to increase fanbase.
While all Atlanta radio stinks, Dave is, well was, a fresh idea in radio. GO back to rock without rules and get out of repeat mode.

Hey Boy Ho,
Very unprofessional for a journalist to b*** that an exec doesn’t return your calls when writing a news article or blog, e.g. your “For reasons I could never quite ascertain, over her three years at Dave, she pretty much ignored me” statement.”
Another peculiarity is how many times the word “I” appears in your column/blog/article. Did you pass most of your writing classes in college, or is college no longer a requirement for AJC writers/bloggers.

It would be nice to have a normal radio station in Atlanta. I remember my teen years listening to Gary McGee (Spelling ?) it was just fun radio, music a few laughs mixed in but the last ten - fifteen years the stations in Atl have all stunk it up pretty bad. It started with the Grease Man and went down hill to the Regular Guys just trash radio. I would like some music, news, scores and a few laughs. It don’t seem like that would be to hard to deliver. It looks like as many people as they are out of work one of the staions could find a DJ to do this simple task and a program director to understand the what Atlanta wants.

I stopped listening to radio and specifically Atlanta radio long ago. This market is bland, stale with NO creativity. Back in the 1970s there was a REAL radio station in Summerville, SC called 93.5 WWWZ-FM. Now that was a radio station! The DJ’s were informative, intelligent and SERIOUS about putting QUALITY music on the air. Please, get rid of the jerks running radio today!! It is no coincidence that iPods have become big. If the quality of music was there on the radio, people will listen. I miss radio, but there is way too much crap bieng played that is called music today.

I listened to Dave for the new music, and acoustic sunrise program on the weekends. Is that gone, too? I am a 55 mwf, a child of the 60’s and 70’s, who likes the new music that is reminiscent of my coming of age music. I could care less about any of the 80’s and only some of the 90’s music.

And here I thought it was just me….I’m a transplant from SoFla (please don’t throw anything at me), and it amazes me that a market that is considered less important than Atlanta and has at least as large if not larger rap/hip-hop/ethnic cultural influence is able to produce better rock and contry stations than Atlanta. Hell, even the sports radio (all Dolphins, all the time) is better than what you guys have here. It also seems to me that the stations in SoFla were much more willing to play new songs by new artists, as opposed to only playing established artists.
As far as DaveFM, I thought it was OK before, haven’t listened to it recently. I agree with some of the other posters, Sirius all the way!

It doesn’t matter what format a station chooses if they wear out the same 30 song playlist. Day after day after day. I swear, I can tell the time by what song is playing.
How about some deep cuts? How about some live cuts? How about shutting the DJ’s up while you’re at it.

I totally agree with Concerned Music Citizen. Michelle got fired because all she had the station play was crap she likes. They play the same 10 artists over and over. I don’t want to hear U2, INXS, The Fray, Sting/The Police and Bob Marley every hour. Michelle killed the variety at that station. She gave Margot a huge slap in the face and made her irrelevant to the station.
The station’s slogan should have been “Dave FM: Michelle Matters Here.”

ROCK without rules. My hat says that and that is when it was good!!
I lam sure the new PD knows what to do but I would like to contribute my dime like the person in the comments above!!! This was the best station in town not so long ago… It is also one of the best new brands recognized in the city and would be a waste to let it go… SO here are my suggestions… I know not all can be done but hopefully some of them can happen.
Develop a morning show - You need something national Opie and Anthony or Toucher and Rich would be some fine choices. Maybe comb the internet stations for someone new with some edge…Still I think a big national act would be best… Bring back the new artists that blended well with the old. Hell yes! I loved it when I could hear Robert Randolph followed by Queen. Still it would also be nice if it could get harder from time to time and sillier with some classic KISS, Foghat, Dead Milkmen, Presidents of the USA you get the idea… Acoustic Sunrise as got to go! I hate waking up on weekends on to get lulled back to sleep… Replace it with just some good music or even some cool weekend talk show. Just not that Auto Scoop thing PLEASE!! Make it local about town stuff… That would be nice… make us feel like being in Atlanta is a good thing. Pump up Retro In The Metro! That is one of the best drive time shows for the age market… Make it edgier with more fun stuff! Sound bytes from the 80’s films and some historic recording taken out of context! We love remembering our youth!! It also has a good devoted fan base that helps promote it on Myspace… Let it massage that too… Any help to a a show and DJ is help and community for the station… Also having a Retro weekend and maybe a good 80’s mix show would be fun too and a good boost for the brand. Adding some big hair songs mixed in from time to time would be nice too! Stop promoting shows and festivals out of state… THIS IS AN ATLANTA STATION!! Many of us are not feeling good living here due to the economic situation… Stop feeding in to it by telling us how lame we are for no longer having a good festival like MUSIC MIDTOWN anymore and that we should travel somewhere else for a good show. Promote some good events and bands in the local area.. Give Sully or Margot a good local music show.. There is some good stuff not so far in V. Highlands… Hell Sully tells us he loves karaoke… Let him run some with Metlasome Inc. Stop the cheesy teasing!!! Especially in the morning! I am fighting traffic and trying not to be late to work… Make me laugh ease the stress! I don’t give a care if the song coming up in 20 minutes was #1 in Costa Rica and was penned when Dave Mathews was on the toilet in his bus and felt a cool breeze hit his bum when the waste trap opened while on a bridge… I also don’t care if Britney Spears painted the town red with Lindsey Lohan only to wake up later in a hotel with the Olsen Twins and Ron Jeremy. (Okay it would be amusing to see that tape but you get my point) Like I said before develop a morning show… KEEP Lil’ Stevens show!! Give Margot Dave After Tomorrow back!! God I loved the Psychobilly/Rockabilly show she did with Andy!! We NEED more good and entertaining shows like these from time to time!!
Please remember conservative BEAUTIFUL women are not your only listeners… Some of the men in their life have to listen as well…

DAVE FM shouldn’t stop with Wheeler. As long as they’re bringing in total losers, DAVE should hire Jerry Delcore and Marc Chase and reunite the team that ran Clear Channel Atlanta into the ground. Hell, maybe CBS can pick up John Hogan after the CC sale, I hear they want to get out radio.

Good riddance…she brought that friggin no talent Barnes back to the Atlanta airwaves, and allowed him to bring Holly Firfer along for the ride. Maybe whoever the next PD there is will finally do us all a favor and get rid of her next. One could only hope!
