10/4: Final day for Steve & Vikki 11/2

steve%20and%20vikki%20sendoff.jpg

Star 94 today announced November 2 as the final day for the Steve & Vikki show after more than 17 years on the air.

The press release included a quote from Vikki Locke:

Locke announced her departure earlier this summer, citing health concerns. “My husband and I agree that my health is the most important thing,” Locke said. “My doctor says a low-key schedule and more sleep will help get me back to 100%.”

Curiously, there was no quote in the release from Steve McCoy, who is also leaving. Their contracts are up at the end of the year.

Mark Kanov, their boss, told me that Tom Sullivan and Shannon Holly will stick around while the station seeks a new morning show. They have sifted through hundreds of tapes and traveled to different cities to meet potential replacements, resulting in three strong potential candidates. He hopes to announce their replacements within 30 to 45 days.

“It’s all about that chemistry and what fits right and what the audience can feel comfortable with,” said Kanov, who has been at the station for 39 years. “This is not a science. It’s still an art.”

For about three weeks after Steve & Vikki leave November 2, the station will air “best of” bits from the 17 years the pair have been on. Kanov said he’s not sure what the station will do per se between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, but they will probably just keep Shannon and Tom on air before the new team joins them. He said they have been around so long, they have bits in four different mediums: reel-to-reel tapes, cassette tapes, CDs and digital hard drive.

He proudly noted that over 34 years, 94.1 has had just two morning shows: Gary McKee and Steve & Vikki, a rare stability in such a volatile market. The 92.9 signal, for instance, since 1989 has churned through at least eight morning shows including the Greaseman and Moby. (UPDATE: Kanov conveniently forgot a brief morning show disaster from 1989-90 led by Jack Murphy and Terrence McKeever that aired after McKee and before Steve & Vikki’s arrival.)

Unfortunately, Kanov said with consolidation, the pool of talent is a lot shallower than it was 15 or 20 years ago. “Stations aren’t willing to grow and develop talent in these middle markets.”

He’s not making Steve & Vikki available for comment until later this month.

Going to miss Vikki as I remember her when I was in OH. As for Steve his time has come and gone years ago. He is such a hypocrite and brings his political views to the show. When Clinton was in office he had no problem making jokes and stupid bits against him, but heaven forebid someone talk down about Bush.

Vikki - good luck in your future endeavours as you are a class act.

I love the show in the morning with Steve and Vikki. I enjoy laughing and all the jokes in the morning. Its great to drive and listen to them on my hour commute every morning and continue to listen to 94.1 in the evening on my hour home commute. Health comes first and I am glad they are both willing to help one another. I hope you get a lot of rest and know that you both will be missed.

I knew about Vikki but had not heard about Steve. I have listened to them for thier entire stint at Star 94 and it will be quite an adjustment. I am bummed to see Steve go. He was and is my favorite.

BTW Bart, it is not that folks are afraid of homosexuals (phobia), its just that some of us believe it is not right and cannot support the lifestyle.

Thank goodness. I enjoyed listening to Steve and Vicki while in high school. However, while I grew up, their humor became much more sophomoric and became horribly inappropriately laced with blatant sexual innuendo.

everyone should listen to Q100, that is BY FAR the best morning show to listen too in the morning. They will tell you like it is and they have some of the funniest bits! They are genuine down to earth people and I highly recommend them.

Steve & Vikki would try to steal Q100’s bits anyway!! Bye bye has-beens :)

Star 94 is a great station. Have always enjoyed Steve & Vicki, along with Cindy and Ray in the afternoon. I’m sure they’ll make the right replacement choice. Steve & Vicki, you’ll be missed.

Since Steve and Vicki are leaving, can you get rid of Cindy and Ray as well? God PLEASE don’t replace them with those two. Cindy DEFINATELY has a face for radio. Ray isn’t so bad, but her thumb sucking buck toothed lisp is annoying! Shannon Holly and Tom Sullivan are a great combo, I say just let them take over. They are comedic and should have more air time.

Heck, move Trip West to the morning show, he’s freakin hot and very personable. I’d go across town to his remotes just to get a piece of eye candy.

Sorry to see Steve and Vicki go, I kept listening to them online when I moved out to Las Vegas because radio stations else where suck a$$.

Oh well, best of luck to them…it’s hard to replace a morning show as long running as theirs and stay afloat. Could make or break you…take the 99xcrement for example. What an atrocity that was after Barnes left. Now the station is crap, as is Project 96.1 Star 94 is the only decent station left.

I haven’t been able to stand the Star94 crew since I was in middle school in the mid 90’s. Now I can’t get enough of the energizing crew at Q100. They are by far the most dynamic group and understand how to plug into this diverse market!

Star 94’s entire station, Steve and Vicki and every other on air personality is so unbelievably cheezy!! Their lame a$$ attempts to stay cool and hip to the younger crowd was pathetic. They’ve always been cheezy!! It was like listening to a couple of parents failing miserably at trying to be cool in the eyes of their kids!! SEE YA!!

Kelly…if you are a Q100 listener, then you are also a Jerry Springer fan I’m sure. First and foremost, the Bert Show folks are almost as old as Steve and Vicki…just because Bert laser’d his body hair and get veneers doesn’t mean s** and the fat guy..forget his name but they all use the Bert Show to push their personal agenda’s. Besides, do you EVER hear them play music during their show? its a talk show, like Jerry Springer and Bert, Jen and the fat guy have endorsed every company in atlanta as long as they got paid..I mean seriously…

By holy cow

Whatever you do Star 94, do not pattern your morning show after Q100. They are the worst. If I was a 13 year old girl, then Q100 is for me. Bert’s napoleon complex is out of control (nice hair), Jeff is so not funny (and fat), the lesbian is nothing but a cry baby, and the hot chick needs to move to California because she is obsessed with movie stars (loser)

Good Luck Steve & Vicki. For those of you who choose to insult them, then you shouldn’t even post. It’s rude! As far as the homophobic comments, you guys really need to quit acting like you are picked on. To each his own. Nice ppl in real life I am sure, but c’mon. This turned into lame 40+ yr olds trying to act 20, and attracting their own likes, that it was hoakie and unlistenable. (Cindy and Ray, you arent far behind ) this town needs a radio personality that is honest with who they are or are not, acts their age, young or old and is funny, truly interesting and funny. NOT silly and laughs at their own jokes. (Rule #1 isnt it?!) PLEASE, for the love of all things holy, take Noodge/Nudge whatever his name is with you , his idiotic whimsicle spirit and obvious uncool chatter (Trying to sell other he is WAAY cool) is like a finger in the back of my throat. 94.1 plays music for the 20-30 yr olds it seems, but all the callers seem to be in their 40s and above with their kids listening in. These are the moms who act cool w/ their teenaged kids and anna be one of the kids friends. You arent cool just because you say “WHAT WHAT?!!! Saying that actually proves how lame you are. Star 94 needs a dramatic facelift, I am in my mid 30s, and I can say w/o a doubt, its music doesnt match the personalities, and the younger personalities are unlistenable. Getting rid of Steve and Vicki is long over due, Nudge must be next, and Cindy and Ray should be on waivers…

Star 94 should just broadcast the Bert Show during the morning hours.

I moved to Atlanta 2 years and searched the dial for a good morning show… the Bert Show blows away any other morning radio in Atlanta… AM or FM, regardless if it’s country, pop, etc… Q100 is the only thing in this city worth listening to while stuck on I-75.

I used to listen to Z-93 when Steve was on and he was great, because he was surrounded by a great format. I can honestly say that I never listened to Steve and Vicki, except for the TV commercials, but hats off to them for hanging in there. I would say the reason that I don’t listen is the format is lame. I used to listen to 94Q but those days are gone. I don’t see the fascination with the modern artists, as all of them rehadh things that have been done already. There is no musical originality anymore. It’s just a bunch of mindless pop songs that appeal to the simple minded. Give me my Rock and Roll. I’ll have to say that I, a former terrestrial radio man, spend most of my time finding the formats that I love best on satellite. There are a few talk shows I listen to on regular radio. Keep rocking Boortz.

Bring back the GREASEMAN. As for the homophobes-your life style is offensive! Try a woman and be a man. Get over it and get a grip. No matter what anyone’s opinion is of Steve McCoy, he’s been around Atlanta radio since I was in high school. Next year will be the 25th anniversary of my high school graduation! Yes…Steve’s been around THAT LONG. So, reading that Steve’s leaving along with Vikki was a bit of a shocker to me. Steve was a solo morning act on the old Z-93, so I had just assumed he’d stick around on Star when Vikki left. Wow. Any ideas where he’s off to next? Just curious.

Are you sure Steve is a homophobe? I would have sworn Tom Sullivan is gay? He is metrosexual at least but would have sworn he was gay. I don’t listen often but anything personal I heard him talked about screamed gay. Last I listened he was talking about a friends brother having a wedding at his house because he has such a pretty garden and he was going to go out and get candles to float in his pool. Does a single heterosexual male have prety gardens and float candles in their pool?

I like Steve and Vikki and I will miss them. I find these rude, hateful comments unnecessary. It sounds like they must have reached a lot of people to have sparked such negative, sophmoric comments. I wish them well in all their future endeavors and I wish the rest of you would stop being such jerks. In Atlanta, all of the radio stations leave a lot to be desired. For such a large market, Steve and Vikki have a tremendous track record at 17 years; none of these others will last that long, nor should they. Best of luck, Steve and Vikki.

And thanks for making my main point even more clearly than I did—just like steve and so many other right wingers, your post implies that people who do not share YOUR morals have NO morals. i don’t have to live my life by his moral codes any more than he has to live his life by mine.

Steve was making $300,000 a year, and the station can not or will not pay him that amount of money. Star 94 and 790 the Zone are owned by the same company. 790 has a very high payroll and high costs with the Falcons, Georgia Tech, and Hawks contracts. They also own a station in St. Louis. Star-94 is going to change formats before the end of the year. Look for other changes at the zone too. The Zone’s rating were much lower then 680, and 680 has a much lower payroll.

GOOD RIDDANCE!!! Who in their right mind will miss their silliness.

By Jeff

October 4, 2007 3:28 PM | Link to this

Allow me to be the voice of reason here. First of all, all of you debating moral and political issues, go to another blog. Whether you’re white or black or green or straight or gay or left or right, I don’t care…. you can sleep with geese, it doesn’t matter. But this is not about any of that (to set the record straight, Steve McCoy has just as much a right to voice his opinions as you “politically-correct”, left-leaning people do, so shut up - it’s freedom of speech. I’ve heard enough liberal drivel on Q-100 to know it works both ways, so enough!!!) The issue here is the ending of an era and the exit of an Atlanta icon, Steve McCoy. He was on Z-93 back when I was a freshman in high school in 1984… our bus driver had him on every morning. I still remember hearing songs from Chicago, Guiffria, Debbie Gibson, Def Leppard, Prince, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen on those cold mornings. To me, we should respect the fact that overall, Steve was a pleasant, funny, energetic guy who was willing to get up at 4 a.m. every weekday for 17 years to entertain all of you rediculously over-stressed people in Atlanta. I for one thank him and commend him. He and Vikki will be missed. And regardless of whether you liked their style or not, stop the crude insults. And WHERE is it written that the entire media world must bow down to the crappy and shallow humor of 14-to-21 year olds? My God, we as adults need to STAND UP!!! Nobody wants to make music, movies, TV shows, or even radio shows for that matter for ANYONE over 30… yet we are the ones that make the world work with our careers and support of the economy. Station managers and those like them live and die by ratings, and if someone slips a tenth of a point some week, they are fired. It’s sad. DO NOT bring back the Regular Guys (talk about crude humor!) or Greaseman (ditto) or anything that has been on 99X or Project 9-6-1. Let’s find an adult who is willing to be themselves and fill the adult market. Play grown-up songs, talk about grown-up things, and tell grown-up jokes, and don’t feel the urge to make every freakin’ 15-year-old girl or 20-year-old college frat boy feel included. I myself miss the days of old Atlanta radio in the 1980s - Z-94, 94-Q, Peach 95, 96 Rock, Fox 97, 99X, Kicks 101.5, etc. etc. etc. Maybe somebody will be original and creative and replace quality people like Steve and Vikki with another quality team. And hopefully, Steve will stay in Atlanta and find another radio or TV gig soon. For my money, I happen to like Rick and Bubba - down to earth, funny, blue-collar, average-joe guys who truly have a passion for what they do. But their conservative leanings and candor about issues wouldn’t fly in a liberal hotbed like Atlanta. Anyway, I will continue to alternate between sports radio, CDs, my Sirius radio and an occasional listen to the FM side if someone is playing music. Otherwise, I won’t live and die by any morning show. Thank you to those who are standing up for Steve and Vikki and their dedication to be a team for so long. And THANK YOU Steve and Vikki for your service in Atlanta and for all the entertainment you brought us. You brightened a lot of people’s mornings for almost two decades, and you’ll be missed by those of us “real Atlantans” who GET IT. You’ve been great - best of luck in your futures.

I heard Q100 the other day and was appalled at an audio of a speech one of the female deejays gave at an event. It was filthy. And the topics are awful. Tibbs:

Try using spell check. If the ratings are down you are not making money. I’ll concede the fact about renting the signal, if that is true. A few years ago they let go of several staff members in Nick C ( who they brought back) being one of them, after they were having money issues. With Tech losing and the Falcons main draw going to jail, the rating have been falling. 680 was smart enough to have a small staff of four or five regular talking heads, compared to 790’s 10 or more of Steak’s friends on the radio. Big league Broadcasting is more interested in opening another station in another city. So much for being Atlanta’s #1 station. There has been many comments from radio experts that this market cannot support two sports radio stations. Who ever can get a signal boost first so it can be heard at night, will win. That may be 680, because ESPN is buying stations in major markets. They already us Buck and John on there their national shows. ESPN would have the money to boost the signal, or move it to a stronger station.

Reading some of the mean and negative comments some people say about these two, long-lasting radio personalities (who helped mold Atlanta into a great city, over a long period of time, by their fun-loving spirits and community involvement) makes me wonder what has happend to the city I once loved and admired. Are you guys kidding? This is the worst day in Kanov’s life. They’ve spent all summer looking for a replacement that fits Star’s already established sound and the marketplace is dry. Mckee? Great with that 94Q. Disaster on his old at Classic Rock Z93 and B98.5 Randy & Spiff? Track record speaks for itself, but nice guys. Tom Sullivan is a man trying to be a teenager. He’s the Lindsey Lohan of Atlanta radio. Very shallow. Don’t keep him on long. No question Steve McCoy sounded better on Z93 because was run so well and no station has had the ratings they did. In fact McCoy’s morning team beat the McKee team more than once. You want to complain? Wait til you get their replacement. In a few months you’ll suddenly remember they did their job better and longer than anybody I’ve seen. Star wants a more mature person and still get the 25-34 audience. Q100 does a great job in under 25 audience. 94 doesn’t try and compete with Q. 94 is more mature and appeals to a different person but there is for both of them. Both are better tha 99X anyday.

Steve and Vicki deserve a lot of credit for being on the air so long. That counts for something. But their show always reminded me of the old Carol Burnett Show. Very vanilla, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But like the Carol Burnett Show, as S&V’s act got old and boring, and the more they tried to keep pace with the times, the lamer the show became.

I listen to the Burt Show, or to 97.1 The River when I want to hear music. At least it’s not Project 9-6-1, which plays the songs I can’t stand from 99X over and over…

Congrats to Steve and Vikki for a long run. I worry about Steve’s transition into contemporary society, though - for seventeen years he’s played a character that’s incompetent in everything you expect a straight man to know, and incompetent in everything you expect a gay man to know, too.

Meanwhile, Tom Sullivan is moving to Atlanta & Co. Like Leslie Framm at 99X, he’s a corporate cockroach, and I mean that in a nice way. You can drop an atomic bomb and he’ll be back on the air like nothing happened…

Steve and Vicki, I will miss listening to you. I have enjoyed your show very much and you have made my commute enjoyable. You both have also contributed much to the community with your causes. Good luck to you both and take care of yourself, Vikki. It has been a pleasure.

Rick & Bubba only a simpleton from Alabama or Canton would think they are funny. If you want country bumpkin comedy John Boy & Billy are funnier than them.I agree with the thinking on Leslie Fram she is a cockroach who wants to act like a big wig but will not put her name on a show so that when it tanks she can blame it on someone else stab them in the back.Leslie should back up that big mouth grow some balls put your name on the show.

Steve and Vicki are obsessed with American Idol, from January thru May that is all they can talk about. Even with their guest callers. I knew the duo was doomed when Blake said the band 311 was his inspiration and Vicki said on air, “I’ve never heard of them, have you?” I thought, my goodness she’s in the radio biz…time to hang up the head phones….

Me good comments there. I will spell check when you start checking for accuracy. By the way did you grammar check your post. Us instead of use and there their used back-to-back, but I digress. When you hear Buck Belue on a national ESPN radio show let us all know because the next time will be his first time. What does Nick C’s firing have to do with Star94? Good misdirection there. I don’t believe the Dickeys are going to sell their toy to ESPN. Also no AM station is going to get a stronger night time signal. It’s not a matter of money but FCC regs primarily. Also if ESPN bought and moved it to a stronger station as you indicated what station would that be. There is only one strong am station WSB.

So what you are really proposing is ESPN is going to come in and buy 680 the Fan for the valuable piece of B & K and Rude then turn around and buy WSB to put the Fan’s 1 share signal on a 10 share station. Seems real plausible. Do you work for Clear Channel?

I am still laughing for the post about Vicki not hearing of 311. Also her comment on why she is quitting is so lame. If she needs an easier schedule and some more rest take 90 days off. If Star 94 wanted them, they would have kept them and let her have 90 days off.

Oh the poor life of a high paid am drive talent. It is so stressful talking on the radio for 4 hours about gossip and nonsense. Face it they were fired. Congrats they had a good run but really could they be more vanilla. They come off as the two biggest airheads on the dial.

One more question? Who is older Vicke or Leslie Fram?

By BDAD

I don’t know who is older but I can tell you Leslie is uglier.

I really hope whomever they choose will not be just like the Bert Show—it has gotten just too nasty. They Q100 need to clean up their act. Trying to find a station that doesnt talk about boring , arguing, immature listeners it getting to everyone…thats why everyone is one the phone! Good lck to the station and Steve and Vicky—what is her health issue? regardless isnt easy for everyone to find fault with something or someone—trying to please everyone is a tugh job. It time to get back to basics—we do not want so much talk about everyone sleeping and lying and all the probems to start our days..Wake up we can use some thing original that doesnt always make our city sounds so screwed up. I dare everyone to find something nice to say every day—critisism is overrated on radio!

I am so sad to hear that Steve is leaving. I was so hoping they would just find him a new partner. Maybe he didn’t want to work with anyone else and is just ready to move on to something different. I wish both of them the best. Guess I will have to just start listening to my cd’s in the morning. PS There is no reason for people to be so nasty on these boards.

I grew up with Steve and Vikki. I will miss them but it’s time for them to go. The market is changing… I would like to see them bring in Opie and Anthony. If not thank God for my XM. I listen to the Bert Show sometimes but I can’t stand listening to Jenn Hobby and that Tracey Puleso person… now they should leave

Yeah right. Steve said if I can;t work wth Vicki I won;t work with anyone else. Even if it means a 75% paycut. Get real this isn;t a Hallmark movie and Steve is a loyal puppy. Like someone else said. THEY WERE FIRED!!!

I knew Vikki was leaving, but this is the first I’ve heard about Steve leaving.

I’ve been listening to Steve McCoy for as long as he’s been in Atlanta (going back to the days he was with Z-93) … it just won’t be the same not hearing his voice in the morning.

Personally, I’d love for Cindy & Ray to move to the morning time slot and for Star 94 to put someone new in their afternoon time slot.

I think because the morning slot is much more high profile it would suit Star 94 better in the long run to have a more familiar “face” there.

Good luck to Vikki with her health!!! I hope they just let Tom and Shannon take over the show. When they have filled in they seem to have a good chemistry and Shannon is really good at interviewing celebs. I’m already comfortable with them. Why should you bring in two new people when you already have a good team in place

It is the end of an era, and I’m sad to see them go. Steve and Vikki are a great team and seem to be really nice people, too. I haven’t listened to them much over the last few years - I turned to NPR after 9/11 — but whenever I needed a pop music fix with funny, smart hosts, that’s where I always tuned. Good luck to you both!

I’m sorry, but I’m really not going to miss them. I stopped listening to morning shows a while back when all I heard was yak yak yak yak yak when I was searching for some MUSIC. Now I either listen to Caddy and Kristen (101.5), the only halfway BEARABLE morning show, or B98.5 just because they play music when I’m driving.

Or there’s always my standby - whatever CD I’ve burned from my computer of music I WANT to listen to. Less talk, more songs!

I hope 94.1 goes with Shannon as the replacement for Vikki. She has a great sense of humor and as a fairly new mom myself she talks about subjects that I care about. More Shannon please!

Atlanta will never be the same without Steve & Vikki! I understand that Vikki has health concerns and Steve is probably ready for a change, however, they are absolutely the best and Atlanta will definitely be different without their music, humor, funny stories and jokes! They’ve also done so much for so many here in Atlanta, March of Dimes, Children’s Healthcare and Christmas, you both are to be commended for being such wonderful and humble radio hosts! God Bless each of you in your new adventures! Karenb

Good Luck Steve & Vikki!! All of your critics can come back once the Bert Show has been on the air for 17 years. The radio business is about ratings - - S&V wouldn’t have lasted that long without amazing ratings. The negative bloggers must be jealous that they are not listening to the most successful morning show in the ATL. Steve - Thanks for your dedication to the city for so many years. Vikki - Same to you.

For all those who are contemplating suicide over Vicky’s departure; Don’t despair, her skinny evil twin is still at 99.7. They are both all about pop culture, movies, TV. Music? Not so much..
