1/3: Three more years of Alton Brown on Food Network

alton-brown-knives.jpg

Atlanta’s busy food maven Alton Brown recently signed a three-year contract renewal with the Food Network, guaranteeing fresh episodes of “Good Eats” at least through 2010.

Brown’s signature show, produced here in Atlanta, will soon exceed 200 episodes, having been on air for nearly a decade. Production starts again in mid February, according to his line producer Dana Popoff. “Good Eats” was given the coveted 8 p.m. primetime weekday slot this past fall, bumping “Emeril Live!” which ended production last month.

She said he will also continue to co-host “Iron Chef America” and is in talks to do a third season of “Feasting on Asphalt,” his show in which he hits mom-and-pop eateries via motorcycle.

Another local TV personality, designer Vern Yip, has also been given the greenlight for a second season of his show “Deserving Design,” seen on HGTV at 9 p.m. Wednesdays. Most of his show is shot here in Atlanta, too. And he’s a judge on “Design Star,” the popular reality show which is taping its third incarnation.

Alton is the best personality on Food Network. I used to work for Food Networks parent company and everyone would stop and watch whenever new episodes would arrive. I have tried several of his recipes and those of Emeril, Paula and Sandra Lee just to name a few, Alton’s is the best by far. I would love to get the chance to work on his production crew for just one day. Alton RULES!!!!

Alton - congrats - my wife and I have thought that you had the best show for the last 5 years - keep up the great work; we’ll be watching.

Oh thank God.

You had us worried, Alton. First, we find out the contract was expiring. Then, they can Emeril’s show and put Mario on the back burner. Finally, we hear that they went LATE into December & you still weren’t resigned.

The thought of Guy Fieri or (nooo) Sandra Lee at 8pm certainly would not be Good Eats.

Thank God.

Now get that pilot’s license finished, enjoy the new year, and may the next three years be as much fun for you as the last three were.

Hey Alton

I have a gorgeous yellow Triumph Thunderbird which would look great in your pack on your next trip. I’m also a volunteer chef assistant at Salud at Harry’s/Roswell.

How do you pick your riding team?

I’m sure glad Good Eats will still be around. It is absolutely the best cooking show. It’s funny and provides loads of knowledge about food and cooking. I’ve learned so much. Alton, you need to train teachers on how to deliver facts. Using your method would certainly make the classroom better than ever. Keep up the good work!

Alton does a very good job on his show “Good Eats”….easy to follow recipes, with excellent safety tips….just enough food knowledge and history to keep you interested without blowing you away….and very well written skits. He also does a very good job hosting “Iron Chef America”. Alton, Bobby Flay, and Paula Deen are by far the best and most impressionable cooks on the food network……Rachel Ray does a good job too, even though she is a little bit quirky……but I am very happy for Alton.

It is always nice to see the Atlanta area represented well on the national scene. Watching Alton make his treks to local supermarkets while doing his shows fill me with some hometown pride.

I LOVE to see all of the local groceries when Alton goes out shopping! Even though Atlanta has some excellent chefs and restaurants, we tend to get ignored on the national and international scene. Alton and his show really help to keep our little “blip” visible! The scientific approach that Alton takes toward cooking is one of a kind and my family enjoys his show the most!

Best news of the year so far! Love to watch Alton and his great explanation of science and cooking. Big Fan!

And cant wait for more “Feasting…” either, that is easily another top 5 FOOD show!

YAY Alton!

Thanks to Alton we understand the chemical reactions that affect how ingredients interact with each other - JAG dubbed Alton “the almanac” and I would have to agree - also, Vern Yip is the best designer out there, bar none, and i appreciate his sense of community with ‘Deserving Design’ but it doesnt really showcase the breadth of his talent

This is great news! I’m tired of watching “celebrity chefs” that do little more than mix pre-measured ingredients and display their dental work for the camera. Alton Brown has knowledge, humor, and a weird charisma. He’s kinda like your nerdy lab partner in science class. I just tried his egg-nog recipe — GREAT!! it was simple, delicious, and light as air. I’m glad to see him succeed.

Another season of Feasting On Asphalt??

FOA is, by far, the best show Food Network has done, and may even be one of the best TV shows ever. Neither Paula’s sons or Guy get as close to the heart and soul of American “real food” as Alton does on Feasting On Asphalt.

Where should he travel? How about an east coast tour - Eastport, Maine to Key West, Florida :)

Yea! I love Alton Brown! Good Eats and Iron Chef are the only shows on Food Network my engineer husband will watch with me. I’m glad they’re keeping him on and not giving Paula or Rachael another show.

Oh and FYI: Alton no longer lives in Alpharetta, but in Marietta. I saw him filming his show one time at the Cool Beans on the Square.

ALTON BROWN IS AN IRRITATING LOSER. HE HAS THIS CONDESCENDING, I’M SMARTER THAN YOU MANNER THAT JUST GRATES MY NERVES. HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT FOOD AND USES THESE SILLY PROPS AND SESAME STREET-LIKE SHOW TO ‘TEACH’ ADULTS THE SCIENCE BEHIND FOOD AND PREPARATION. THAT GOT BORING AFTER ABOUT ONE SHOW. HOW THIS MORON COULD MAKE A LIVING OFF A COLLEGE COMMUNICATIONS CLASS SKIT IS BAFFLING!

Alton Brown is wonderful in that he is proud of being Southern and shares that pride with the rest of America. The direction of the shows are always captivating and he is certainly better than RR. I bet Alton tips better too. Bring back Feasting on Asphalt. And FN, please bring some chefs on the network, not just personalities…RR telling me to warm up a store bought apple pie on her 30 minute meals does not challenge nor inspire me. See you at Whole Foods Alton

Alton - great job. I know many who think your show is a great learning tool for adults and children alike and the food is great as they have cooked your recipes.

Bob Andrews - your comments sound like sour grapes and you might be thinking he is talking over your head!!! Alton has a good thing going and your comments are in the minority, buddy. If you do not have something nice to say, as my momma taught me, don’t say anything at all. Or at least keep it constructive.

I am a tech fan and I like the guy - he is doing his best to make cooking fun for kids and people who do not normally have an interest. If you do not like him, change the channel. It’s a free country.

Alton, keep up the great work. Explaining the scientific concepts keeps kids (and adults)applying and seeing how science works in the real world - something we need!!! Thanks.

For the Idiot Tech Fan Kathy, Alton Brown went to UGA- he isn’t really capable of ‘talking over’ anyone. Acting Smart doesn’t make u so, and TECH never graduated anyone who was actually fluent in english anyway. The ‘science’ part of his show does an inadequate job of making up for his lack of cooking knowledge. The guy wanted to be an actor and never took a cooking class- how is he qualified for a cooking show?

By Lisa

January 3, 2008 9:06 PM | Link to this

Don’t you know Alton went to the New England Culinary Institute? That’s way more than taking a cooking class! He has a culinary degree that’s more than some hosts on the Food Network have!

Anyway, Good Eats, Feasting on Asphalt and Iron Chef America are my favorite shows on the Food Network. Alton Brown is the only reason I still watch the Food Network!

Glad to see he’s going to be making great shows with lots of information and entertainment. And his recipes are spot on… they never let me down. I understand so much more about cooking now and I had been cooking for years before watching Good Eats.

Cheers to Alton! :)

First, to Bob Andrews. If you weren’t a moron, you’d be able to see that Alton’s shows aren’t just about T & A like most of the female FN shows are. I guess that’s why you’re upset, if he was a woman with a low cut shirt on, you’d be happy right? Get a life loser, Alton’s pinky is smarter than you’ll ever be.

Alton never says that he knows everything, in fact, he’s the first to admit that he and his staff do research on every show topic, just like he does for ICA. As for his “CONDESCENDING” (don’t yell nimrod, we all see you) attitude…. have you ever met the man, or have seen him in person? I’ll bet not, or you’d never say that. He treats his fans with respect and humility ( I should know, I met him).

Get off your ridiculous high horse and realize that if it wasn’t for men like him, FN would be in the toilet (and Rachael Ray is pulling the handle).

Lisa, don’t bother trying to explain anything to idiots like James Tyler and Bob Andrews, it’s obvious they have no idea what intelligence really is.

By Diana

January 4, 2008 8:53 AM | Link to this

BTW, his waffles and sugar cookies are sublime. If you’ve never tried his recipes, don’t diss the man. I doubt that you’d find many other foods that are as thoroughly researched as his.

By Lisa

January 4, 2008 2:37 PM | Link to this

claps for Diana :)

You are so right about the way Alton treats his fans. I have met him and he was very friendly, sweet, smart and genuine. The guy I talked to was like the guy on the screen (which is NOT condescending at all!) … though his humor is a bit more mischievous in person (which was fine by me). Meeting Alton was the highlight of last year for me.

PS: Yes, the waffles and sugar cookies are awesome! I brought a bunch of the cookies to work before Christmas and my coworkers all raved about them. Those things didn’t last until lunch. :D

By Diana

January 4, 2008 8:55 PM | Link to this

Did you happen to see how his wit wasn’t just on his shows? I mean, he can come off with intelligent banter very quickly, and answer questions with that same sincerity he shows on TV. He’s an all around great guy to talk to, and told me that I can substitute Splenda in place of sugar for brining by cutting it 1/3 in the recipe.
