1/21: What rock format will 100.5 be?

One of the astute readers of this blog found that 99X and Q100 owners Cumulus has recently registered several Web addresses including www.rock100atlanta.com, www.1005atlanta.com, www.rockatl100.com and www.rock1005.com. All those addresses temporily jump to a Cumulus station in Cincinnati.

This doesn’t really clarify what type of rock music will be played. With the Regular Guys as the opener (and they are generally averse to playing music at all), it won’t be soft rock, that’s for sure. The two most obvious formats would be one similar to Project 9-6-1, which is in the business called “active rock,” targeting males 18 to 34. It would rock harder than 99X. Or they could go older and try to go after the River with a harder sounding classic rock sound with a focus on the 70s and 80s. Less likely but certainly possible could be a format that guns after Dave FM with a “classic” alternative sound focused on 80s and 90s.

What type of rock music do you think this market needs? And would it make more sense to call it Rock 100 or Rock 100.5 since Q100 will remain the same even at the 99.7 frequency.

And it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility that Cumulus set aside these Web site addresses as a feint and it could end up a completely different name. You can never tell in radio land!

And it’s not clear whether Cumulus will “stunt” with a silly format for a few days before going to their new “permanent” format or switch immediately on Friday morning. The switchover is supposedly going to happen at about 5:30 a.m. but that’s certainly not written in stone.

Some of you might be tired of 99X remembrances by now, but Jimmy Baron did one in today’s op-ed pages if you want to check it out.

I also spoke with Rick Caffey, GM for Dave and V-103. He said they should have an official launch date for the Zakk Tyler morning show by the end of the week. I expect an early February launch at this point. He said both stations are launching “e-mags” online, which are still in testing stages at www.edave.com and www.v103webmag.com. Both are interactcive, featuring videos, audio, games and advertising.

What every radio market needs is a “Deep Cut” classic rock format…I, for one, am sick and tired of the “warhorse” (i.e., the same old Aerosmith, Zep, Fleetwood Mac) music I always hear on classic rock stations

Wayne, amen brother….I totally agree. I hope they do that, but unfortunately it’s not likely.

I remember back around 1998 Z93 tried significantly deepening their playlist, and also had all the “theme” weekends (southern rock, progressive rock, etc.). I loved it, but it did not result in a ratings success for them. Within a year or so it was back to “ Night Moves”, “Take it Easy”, etc. played over and over again. Unfortunately it seems that most folks have pretty narrow musical tastes and either want to hear the latest hits, or to hear what they were listening to in high school and college ——- They basically don’t have very sophisticated musical tastes.

Bite the bullet and get satellite radio. You’ll love it. I receive XM through my DirecTV and there is a station called “Deep Tracks” that is friggin’ awesome . It’s exactly what you are describing. Besides tons of deep album cuts off old albums, they also actually play some of the great later material from Classic Rock artists —- Artists like The Allman Bros., Tom Petty, Skynyrd, John Fogerty, and many others who have been actively recording for the last 10-20 years. You sure ain’t gonna hear much of that stuff on “The River”.

From Jimmy’s op-ed piece:

keep that well-used 99X Freeloader card in your wallet, don’t peel off your 99X window sticker just yet, and for gosh sakes, hang on to that 99X Big Shirt. Some things will always say you’re cool.

Well, yes, but none of the things he mentioned are in that category.

Jimmy Baron wouldn’t know cool if it pulled down his pants and spanked him.

I would never listen to a station that had The Irregular Old Guys as a morning show. I hope they once again shill for the GOP, while it is the GOP pushing for “decency standards” on the radio that keeps them losing their jobs. However, The Irregular Old Guys wouldn’t know irony if it pulled down their pants and spanked them.

Rocker and Kenny nailed it. XM is the only way to go. And to Rocker, you’re being kind saying that those who like all that junk that is so tired and overplayed have unsophisticated taste. The hard fact is, they have no taste. I have a vintage auto with a power antennae. I might as well unplug it as whenever I drive that car, I always have my portable XM plugged into it. Why won’t terrestrial radio (junk) just be a good boy and die?

By Gayle

I guess that means Atlantans will be subjected to the crap and fodder record companies are dumping on people these days that passes off as “rock” or even worse, Top 40 “music.” If you want to hear new music, GOOD music or just anything “alternative,” “indie,” or otherwise better invest in that satellite radio system before the corporate monsters attempting to salvage what’s left of the dying recording industry take that over as well. And if local college radio would step up and take on the challenge and actually DO SOMETHING with all the great music out there NOT being heard they may just stand a chance of actually HAVING listeners.

By The Buzz

I kinda liked 105.3 The Buzz format before it switched to Project 9-6-1. They came out swinging at 99X and WON! It was time somebody did that and Buzz timed it perfect. Seems that 9-6-1 station is no longer a good “go-to” preset when looking for something to drive fast to. I like southern rock, quite a lot, but I need a good station where I can always get my hard rock fix by pressing a button. With the regular guys coming on board it would make sense to have the “wake and bake” and other edgy shticks.

I do have sat radio but the quality is lacking. The compressed nusic loses too much range for my taste. Hopefully, the strippers will have a new station to listen to by next Monday.

I’d like to see a “heritage rock” late-70s through the 80s AOR format that slots in between Dave and River, with deeper cuts than River and no 90s alternative like Dave (and easy on the Jan Wenner/RRHOF/cog rock/critics’ darlings like the Talking Heads and REM, which get too much airplay no matter how good they are).

Another way to look at this would be the same musical time period as B98.5, but considerably harder. 70s-80s metal, new wave, and some classic AOR to mix it up.

Or, what 96 Rock was playing in the early 80s before they got boomeritis (“Pure Rock & Roll”) and dumped the metal and new wave for a classic rock OD, or what they played AFTER Z93 went from Top 40 to classic rock and took that part of the market.

Please, Please please. We over 30 so-called “soccer moms” need a radio station. Not one so crazy and off the wall, but not dull and boring either. Talking about movies, tv shows, general every day stuff. I cannot find one in Atlanta any more. I must admit I was more into the Steve and vicki show. Nothing comes close. help!

A good format would center on Led Zep, The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Rush, Deep Purple; not too wimpy, not too hardcore…late 60’s to late 70’s Rock & Roll.

I’ve always got my MP3 player…given that the merger is so close, I’ll hold out to get a post-merger receiver and get the $7.99/month plan.

To all the people who tout satellite radio, you need to take a breather. I have XM and find myself really only caring about 2 or 3 stations. Those same 2 or 3 stations every day play the same music over and over and over too like earth radio. If they ever start playing as many commercials as Atlanta radio, there’s no need for satellite radio anymore. You’re not paying for different music people, you’re paying for music that’s commercial free.

Thrash…therein lies the dilemma. If the merger doesn’t go through, one of the two companies will die out and leave their listeners stuck with dead receivers. If the merger does go through, they will have to guarantee compatibility and avoid raising their subscription rates to keep the Feds happy. They’ve paid a ton for content and are locked into long-term contracts with Stern, Oprah, Baseball, Football, etc. The only way to make up the shortfall is ad revenue. Sattelite Radio music channels with ads mixed in will then start to sound like…Terrestrial radio.

Gayle,

Top 40 playes the newest music from many styles and genres. Give it a try. Nobody wants to hear “alternative” any more, which is why 99X is getting the ax.

By gttim

January 22, 2008 3:45 PM | Link to this

You should pay little to nothing for basic satellite radio equipment. There are always specials by XM and Sirius (usually $50 for a car model), or find older stuff on clearance or Ebay. I paid $25 for a new Sirius Xact receiver and car kit and $25 for a boombox it fits into on clearance. I gave my XM stuff away. It all works the same.

If the merger goes through, and I hate to think that it will, there will probably still be two systems in operation for a while. The satellites are in the sky and cannot be changed. They will just merge programming most likely.

Bad management can screw up everything. Sirius and XM were idiots to sign all these huge long term contracts for programming that their subscription base would not support. But hey, they probably still got their million dollar bonuses. In the corporate world, officers do not have to do a good job to get huge bonuses paid to them.

BTW, the Punk station on Sirius is incredible. I remember when 99X used to play some punk. That was a long time ago, however.

There is one thing that satellite radio will always have over the crap on terrestrial radio is reception. Granted, I get the occcasional “no signal” when I go under a bridge or am in a weird spot beside a building, but the overall clarity and static free reception is superior. As far as playlists go, yes sometimes I feel they play to much of (fill in the blank)or they only play 1 song from a particular release, but still, you definitely hear selections that you will never hear on commercial radio.

I really love how no one on here likes terrestrial radio yet everyone on here has an opinion and usually ends with “yay sirius” or “Thank god for XM”

1 - you are obviously still listening to terrestrial radio because you can comment on everything that happens or are you dumb enough to believe everything that you read.

2 - xm and sirius have the same programming on the same type stations. yes they offer more types of stations but comparable stations have the same playlist and the same tired rotation. why not go ahead and say “my 45s are better than any radio station in america” And much like with most things in life that people complain about….you have the right and the ability to make a change, turn the station, listen to an ipod, listen to satelite, listen to the wind blow, listen to the homesless guy on the street but just shut up about how superior your tastes are and how inferior everyone else’s is!

satelite is the future of radio like laser disc was the future of movies - the equipment is already outdated and the business model is taken straight from the desk of every terrestrial station - Pay people as little money as possible to create marginal products with the only difference is that the end user has to pay to use the product and usually after they are bound to a contract to pay for a minimum of 1 year!

I agree with “really” above…if you satellite listeners are so above terrestrial radio, then why are you even posting about it???

I have XM, HD Radio, and an MP3 player and while I enjoy all of them, my MP3 player gets the most use by far.

XM - I have been a subscriber since 2003. When I started service, they did not have as many channels (no sports) but the sound quality was better then and the playlists were deeper. Now, more channels with a lot of duplication (Ethel & Lucy), the sound is compressed, and the playlists are similar to terrestrial radio only slightly deeper. I still enjoy XM but only play it when others are in the car or during long road trips. The Atlanta traffic & weather channel is a joke forcing me to tune to local radio frequently.

HD Radio - I can only listen at home as I don’t have a car receiver. It has a few good stations but I can’t complain since they are free. I enjoy WABE-HD2&3 and Power 95 and Star 94 HD2 are good background music for parties. Otherwise, the HD radio gets less use than XM.

MP3 Player - My MP3 player is also my phone/PDA so I always have it with me. I use it when I am at the gym to listen to one of my playlists or to stream internet radio. In the car I listen to podcasts on my commute and on road trips. This is my primary source of entertainment.

While I do enjoy XM, Sirius, and HD radio, they will not be the preferred entertainment source for future generations. Remember that the Generation Y grew up in the age of technology with iPods, Tivo, the internet, etc. They are of the mindset that they should be able to listen to want when they want to listen…not having a radio exec pushing a playlist of repetitive songs down their throats.

Although it has nothing to do with the topic, I thought I would take this wonderful opportunity to once again drive home the fact that I am very sophisticated because I have satellite radio.

Many of you probably don’t know about satellite radio. It’s real good. You should get it. But not too many of you. Oh, no. Then I would be average like most of you.

Oh, I also have an MP3 player. Did you know you can download music from the internet? It’s great and I can listen to the music that makes me congratulate myself for being hip.

The Regular Guys may be coming back, but since they are on radio, which is beneath me, I shall sacrifice for the greater good of my self-image by not listening.

I am sick of heearing all these G-A-Y alternative fans weep and moan about their favorite station biting the dust. It happens. There was a time when rock was king and lost to alternative. Pop was king and lost to rock, and so on. It is the nature of the beast. The stations are here to make money, not to be an alternative welfare system so you can get your dose of the Smiths. Bull-cacka. Several of my good friends are 90s-alternative junkies, and we’re all fuming at Cumulus for this bone-headed move. Top-40 these days is mostly hip-hop and rap, which I couldn’t give two craps about.

I’ve been thinking about HD radio, since 99X is staying on in that format, and I may go forward and get a receiver. Sorry, Sirius fans, you’re suckers for paying a monthly fee for radio—not gonna happen here. I’ll go all-iPod before I do THAT.

Brian, you listen to Q100 and let me know how that goes for you. I’ve sampled it, and it’s awful. Its’ just going to suck LOUDER with a stronger signal.

Rodney, you a*******hat, i told you they would call it Rock 100 over a week ago. It’s NOT hard to put two and two together. They’re at 100.5 and the Regular Guys are coming back. F-in duh.

I think this 99X on HD thing might actually prompt people to buy HD receivers. Here are the setbacks of HD (I like mine, but there are screw-ups):

  1. If the station’s analog and digital signals are out of sync and you are in an area where the HD wouldn’t pick up as well, it sounds like trash. This is all engineering’s fault, though, and most of the time everything works as it should.

  2. HD has not been given very much power yet because they were still trying to figure out if there were any interference problems with other channels, etc. Eventually they will get a pwoer increase (like Q100 will by moving to 100000 kwatt signal), but for now, HD’s reach is short, relatively speaking.

I really like the HD-2 station on 99x currently, called 99x/s. I guess that is going away.

I’d love to see a revamped Alternative format that blazes some of the trails that 88.5 does without having to deal with all the avante-garde crap and ambient non-music. If I could hear things like Alkaline Trio and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah along with my Pearl Jam and Modest Mouse, I’d be happy. I’d also welcome a format similar to The Buzz.

Unfortunately, with the Regular Guys potentially coming back, it’s probably going to be more tired old Butt Rock.

I’ve had Serius for about two years and it’s just as boring in a different way as the transmitter and antenna stuff. In three years when G3 technology comes around and you can pick up any internet station on your mobile phone/dock/car radio then I’ll cancel my Serius account as well. I imagine I’ll be just as bored with that in no time flat as well. I stopped listening to my iPod about a year ago when I got bored with trying to find new music to put on it. I am now 27 years old. 99X was great in the mid 90’s. KROQ was great for the two years I lived in LA (2002-2004) and Serius Alternative Nation was good for three or four months when I first got the unit. Dear Mel Karmizon and Kent Burkhart everybody knows that you guys have legions of interns who scour the radio talk blogs to insert you grass roots BS postings touting how wonderful your technology is. We get it. Everybody knows what you guys do. I like you service… for now until I’m ready for the next thing. PS- No I won’t be buying any of your short term stock. Not either of you and not Starbucks either.
