1/28: Regular Guys 3.0 back again, this time on Rock 100.5

regular-guys-2004.jpg

So much for my alarm clock. I missed the first five minutes of the Regular Guys. I’m sure someone at www.radio-info.com will have it to soon on MP3. Someone in fact has made the 6 a.m. launch available for download here.

But in what Eric Von Haessler said was the “fake veil of secrecy,” the quartet of Eric, Larry Wachs, Tim “don’t call me Porn Czar anymore” Andrews and “Southside” Steve Rickman are indeed back this morning. Mark Owens is doing traffic. They are on the new Rock 100.5. (That’s where Q100 was for seven years. In case you were wondering, Q100 is now at 99.7, with the Bert Show on the stronger signal. 99X has now been relegated to the Web only - oh, and HD radio for the seven of you who own HD radios.)

Larry early on told about the time he went to court and prison after being arrested for that radio bit in which he taped Viva’s then morning team Yogi & Panda in the bathroom and mocked them. The two Hispanic men sued and 96rock fired the Regular Guys in October 2006. The pair have not found a radio job until Cumulus saved them from unemployment last month and gave them a third chance. (They were taken off the air the first time after that backwards porn bit went all awry back in 2004.)

Wachs called the Dickey brothers, who run Cumulus, the “Schindlers.” “They have resued us from a holocaust of bad radio vibes,” Wachs said.

“Stop kissing up,” Von Haessler said.

“I spilled the beans,” Wachs said. “And I lied to Rodney Ho to cover it up.”

Yes, two weeks ago, that’s what happened. But I figured it was true a few hours later and that’s what we’ve been assuming ever since. Wachs had no choice but cover up. The bosses told him to do so. Read that January 11 blog entry if you want the full details of the amusing cat-and-mouse game that occurred that evening.

Oh, by the way: the FU line is back. “That’s the ‘faith and understanding’ line,” Larry said. But while it was called the “Foo” line the second time around. Larry is able to say “F U” again. And, the Web site is www.atlantasrockstation.com. As of 7:30 a.m., it’s just a photo of the Regular Guys, with Larry wearing a wig, but there is a button to listen to them live online.

The first caller is Joe. He mocked Giant Brian over at Project 9-6-1, saying he looks like he has Down’s Syndrome.

Larry quickly gave his old employer’s replacement station a new monker: “Project 9-Sucks-One.”

“I know people who work there. They’re cutting budgets to the bone” at Clear Channel, Wachs said. “They’re down to retards.”

And who knows how long the Regular Guys will last this time around.

As Wachs noted, “What is Wachs going to do to screw it up?”

“Every show could be out last,” Eric said.

They had to use the “dump” button for a caller saying something FCC-unfriendly at 7:49 a.m. “Come on people,” Larry groaned. “Don’t blow it for us. We can do it ourselves, thank you.”

“We don’t need a caller to get us kicked off the air,” Eric said.

They do sound thrilled to be back. And surely, a lot of their fans are, too.

If you want to hear how I was summarily booted out of the Regular Guys studio this morning by their new boss, it’s here.. Apparently, I wasn’t supposed to be there but Larry misunderstood the missive and had invited me in.

Thank GOD! For the first time since TRG left the air, I actually laughed on the drive in this AM. The format even sounds palatable. Welcome back Larrry and Eric (and FU Steve). PS.. get the website up, I want to listen at work!

The regular guys are terrible. Just another couple of guys that show that morality is going down the tubes. They aren’t funny and stole every bit they have from Howard Stern. Stern too has no morals but atleast he was orignal. Boo for the regular guys.

Why people find ‘morning talk dj’s’ entertaining is beyond me. Shut up and play some music. I’ve had this station on at work this morning just to find out what kind of ‘rock’ Rock 100.5 will be playing.

I’ve heard NOTHING but jibberish thus far —not ONE song. I don’t want to hear from callers. Play music! The name —as well as colors— show promise (old 96 Rock colors) —but honestly —I would like to know what the music format will be for Rock 100.5.

TRG suck, I’m sorry…if they didn’t, the would have been on longer. I’m not saying what’s out there is better, because it’s not. Brian from 961 sucks, his show doesn’t even get past special ed level entertinment. Q100 is too sweet, 99X can go to HD and take the dinosaur Fram with them. There are no good morning shows anymore…

By where's the music?

…been listening for over 1/2 an hour now —not ONE song has been played. Who really listens to radio like this? Guess this is why I have an iPod as well as a 10-disc CD changer. Thus far Rock 100.5 is awful.

Darn straight. I have XM, and didn’t even turn it on this morning.

To those who want more music, there are plenty of choices for you. You can listen to XM, Sirius, your Ipod, and several other stations on the dial. If you don’t like the Regular Guys, nobody will make you listen.

To the elitists, vote with your ears. Don’t listen. There’s always NPR, or Scott Slade if you’re not a snob. If you’re a soccer mom that wants to be cool with your kids, there’s always the Bert and Ernie Show.

One of you TRG fanatics; I ask this in all seriousness —please tell me what is entertaining about what I have heard during the last 1/2 hour of this show? I honestly cannot believe how BAD this is.

Ross and Wilson in the 70’s, McCain and Mitchell in the 80’s

..those were good morning shows. TRG aren’t even in the same stratosphere as those shows.

PC people beware true radio is back!! If you want more music go plug in your mp3 player, XM, HD or whatever else you have and stop your whining.. You have been catered to enough… If you are some weak willed sissy there is the new Morning F@%# up on 94.1 and Bert and Earnie on 99.7 where they truly always belonged to impress soccer moms trying to impress some whiney kids.

Redneck, Non PC, or not, this is the best release in the morning. And we all listen… Even you haters because you know you want to know what other shameful, venom filled statement will come out of their mouth…

I do feel sorry for Giant and Zakk coming in to davefm. It will be an uphill battle for them… Still TRG is now programmed on my radio and will be till they get fired again!! oh F.U. Steve! “Yeah C’mon!”

…for listening to this moronic banter.

I thought I’d give these guys a listen, and I have. They’re terrible. My opinion has nothing to do with any foul language or off-color remark. This is boring -terrible -terrible radio. Seriously, if you are a person who listens to this -who finds this entertaining, then you really aren’t very intelligent. This type of radio caters to those who aren’t exactly the higher-intelligent of the population as a whole. Just plain bad radio.

By Anne

I have to agree with Jim. I figured with as much talent as the Regular Guys think they have (coupled with all their good looks, ugh!) they wouldn’t have been available. True radio, back on top…whatever. And no, I don’t listen to the Bert Show or any other moronic Atlanta morning radio show. I just can’t believe they would bring these talentless hacks back and pay them to open their moronic mouths again. Wonder how long it will be until they get canned again?

Hey Rodney, screw you..I own an HD radio, and it gives me a hell of a lot more choices than the add driven crap and talk on the regular frequencies. Who wants to spend time in traffic listening to car, erectile disfunction, diamond ring and other crap commercial fed radio when HD gives them more choices.. Dave FM Roots on HD2 is the best programming in Atlanta anymore…not two flame lipped “shock jocks”..

By when do they start?

January 28, 2008 9:18 AM | Link to this

I have heard of the regular guys, but had never listened to them until this morning. When does the show start? What I’ve been listening to this morning isn’t actually the show is it? If it is then these guys are really, really bad. I have heard some bad radio in my time, but this has to top the list.

Is this how the show normally is? I’m not trying to be a smart a**, just trying to get a feel for the show. Is THIS it? C’mon people this is awful. My intelligence level has dropped a couple of notches just for listening in this morning. NOTHING I have heard has been remotely funny to this point. For their sakes I hope this is just rust from being off the air. If not, then two things; 1) They are the worst radio personalities I have ever heard, and 2) Those of you who find this entertaining really should find something better to do with your time. This show really caters to the lower-intelligent of our society.

A couple of you have made a very intelligent assessment and it does hold true. There is a reason that these radio personalities have been off of the air for a year plus and were available for this gig with ‘Rock 100.5’ (Where is the ‘rock’ by the way?)

No one else would have them. it’s true. If you are a fan then take issue all that you want, but it’s a fact. No one else would hire these a**clowns.

Some of us are listening —self included— just to find out what the excitement is all about. An hour plus and I’m STILL waiting to find out what this show is all about. Oh, THIS IS what this show is all about. It’s so bad it’s laughable.

The only thing that keeps me from completely embracing atheism is the fear that when I die, there will be a hell, and it will be filled with “morning crews” or “zoo crews” or whatever the hell they’re calling themselves these days. And they’ll all be doing the same material, which they’ve all stolen from each other or whatever comedian was in town that week. They’ll all be doing the same “wacky” stunts, and “pushing the boundaries of taste.” And they’ll all have their “wacky” shirts. You know, those crazy hawaiian shirts some guys wear as a substitute for an original personality. With apologies to Shakespeare….”the first thing we do, let’s kill all the FM deejays.” Please!

For you morons that don’t like TRG because there’s not enough music.. do you really need a radio station to pick music for you, becase you can’t think for yourself? This should be the last shovel full of dirt on 99Xcrement. A bit of poetic justice, I might add. Larry and Eric used to rip on 99X and now they’re replaced it.

This is a truly great day in Atlanta radio. Top 40 on 99.7 and no 99X. The bonus is a real morning show with a successful track record, and without Leslie Fram.

Classic rock is ..well, classic. You don’t see Alternative rock or any of that other crap deemed ‘classic’ do you now? There is a reason that certain music has been viable for 30+ years now —and that other genres have fallen by the wayside.

I’ll be at VWA @ Encore Park for The Eagles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Rush, and I’m sure others. Classic Rock is the only ‘rock’ that there is. Everything post mid-80’s and beyond simply blows.

I can’t believe that someone wants to listen to 99x online! That’s sad! That station blew for the last 8 years and that is why it’s no longer on the air. Also, it’s 2008 and satellite radio is avaiable for $6.00 a month with no djs and all the music you really want to hear. Atlanta has the worst radio stations of all the major markets in the USA. Even Greenville, SC has better stations. Sad but true.

I must admit, I was happy when TRGs were booted, they seemed so “juvenile” bad boyish, not anything I considered witty or cutting edge. I thought I’d never miss them. However, Thanks to the suckfest at 99.7 for years, the abortion that star 94 just retired, and the need for a quality Atlanta radio morning show so badly, the Bert show gets praise, and Cj at 95.5 talks ebonics even though she’s more cheerleader than street, (taking a moment to hurl in my trash can) I am forced to welcome back the Reg Guys. Don’t make me regret this decision.

It’s nice to be able to listen to some hard rock on the radio again. TRG were awful so I will not be listening prior to 10AM, but now we have our hard-rock/metal on 100.5 and classic rock on 97.1. If somehow 105.3 would start playing 80’s music again then the trifecta would be complete.

Having thought that 96 Rock would be in Atlanta forever, I was disappointed when there was no hard rock and heavy metal on the airwaves in Atlanta. I rarely listen to the radio these days —what with owning over 1000 CD’s and having 10K+ songs on my iPod— but it’s nice to know that the music is ‘out there’ again. I still miss the ‘rock and roll tradition’ that was 96 Rock —but perhaps Rock 100.5 can fill that void left when project 9-6-1 reared it’s ugly head.

My only hope is that it drives The River out of business and Cox replaces it with a more adventurous Alternative format. But considering their strong ratings, I doubt that will happen. Rock 100.5 will piddle out when Cumulus realizes it can’t fight two wars at once.

I don’t expect, or care if liberal idgets who can’t decypher a simple statement to enjoy edgy humor, or stoop to the level of sophomoric whimsy from time to time. Like others have said, go back to NPR or whatever swill you are used to. If you can’t enjoy the astute humor of Ben the Bunnyman or the potty antics of Southside Steve, well, you’re just missing out. Punch #3 for Hillary and enjoy your public radio. YEAH C’MON!

Unlike some folks, I like to get my fill of music on the radio after 10am. I’m glad TRG show is back. Yeah, it’s mostly sophmoric humor, but there is a smattering of elevated wit and double entendres to keep a college graduate entertained. Now, the music after the show is exactly 96Rock, which is OK, I’m just hoping Project 9-6-1 will feel compelled to lean even more towards what The BUZZ used to be. TRG in the a.m., then progressive/new rock in the p.m. To quote Chandler Bing: That’d be perfection!

Why do we have to have morning shows? Can’t we just have music? Not like to 20 songs that 97.1 the Alzhiemer’s station has in permenant rotation. That station is for people who forgot where they are going before they left.

I’ve never been a big TRG fan, but felt sorry for them the last two times they got fired - I didn’t think what they did was that bad either time. And now, I’m kinda looking forward to giving them another shot on my radio, especially now that they are all that’s left. (insert plug for satellite radio here).

Uh —where have you been? 97.1 has recently been playing more music —songs that up until this month have never been played on the station. Besides, repeats of classic rock songs are much better than any pop or alternative garbage anyway.

The River is the best rock station in Atlanta —and also happens to have more listeners than any other rock station in Atlanta. Long may The River run.

I worked for WKLS for six years, and all I can say is this: Look, no offense, but there is a market for dumb radio. The people who find Regular Guys-type shows entertaining are not the smartest people in the world. The Regular Guys (and the corporations that pay them) know this and capitalize on it financially. As long as there are people who are just barely capable of graduating high school (if that), there will be a place for the Regular Guys, and there will be a major radio corporation like Cumulus willing to spoon-feed these mouth-breathers. You TRG listeners may be laughing at their show, but keep in mind that when the mics go off, they are laughing at you. Not with you. At you. All the way to the bank.

Man, I love my XM satellite radio.

All of the above people who are bashing TRG must be 1) liberal 2) female 3) gay 4) all of the above. To those of you who think only rednecks and tards listen to Larry and Eric religiously, I will inform you that I am an attorney who has been listening to them since they came to the ATL. They can be very smart and biting with their satire, and even when they aren’t they are the best at crude humor. Atlanta radio has just been set back 15 years…back then, we had red neck rock, 96.1…even redder neck Z 93 and urban/pop 99.7 (can’t remember their tagline) where they played artists like Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli. Somehow someone with some brains got rid of that crap and launched 99x and Atlanta finally had a one good radio station that played alternative. With this change, we are losing the original Atlanta alternative station, so I’m sad at that. However, on the bright side, at least Project 96.1 plays some good hard alternative stuff and Dave FM plays decent sets most of the time(with some old fluffers and Lesbo soft rock songs sometimes that we can do without)…but now, we’re back to putting up with this new crap station who’s F-ed up DJ’s will now be filling our airwaves with their stupid UGA redneck ass voices with their yea c* on juvenile spews. How long til they bring back acid washed jeans and jorts?? Oh well, at least I still have my CD’s and now my Ipod so I won’t have to hear them!!!

I’m gonna miss 99X’s “Sunday School”. At least that show wasn’t all record company pulp. Elliott Garstin programmed all of his own music. The show had excellent ratings in it’s time slot. Cumulus should have made Elliott the PD a long time ago.

Bad humor & istener calls? Bullcrap. With 99 I listened to the music and the DJs stayed out of the way. That’s the best way to do it.

I have listened to the Regular Guys a number of times during their different morning show stints over the years, including this morning. Only once have I heard one of them say something that was marginally entertaining.

Today they had a guest with a speech impediment who needs heart bypass and valve replacement surgery. What a hoot! I hope tomorrow they have someone who was raped as a baby and is now dying of aids. That will be hilarious!

As a native Georgian I am embarrassed that there are still enough inbred stupid rednecks in metro atlanta that their show will be a hugh success.

I think I’ll just have my penis removed and listen to the Bert show.

Hopefully for their listeners’ sake they plan on focusing on Steve and Tim going out in the field and pranking people, because that’s about as good as this show gets. The Regular Guys are nothing more than direct rip-offs of Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge. Stop listening to the imitators (who knows how long they will be on the air) and buy a Sirius to hear the original. Howard isn’t going anywhere and is 100% uncensored.

That is why I had to go with the only truely alternitive radio where all the content is supurb! It has a multitude of options for every musical taste and/or talk shows. I used to think Stern was lame and didn’t understand why he was so popular, but after hearing him on satellite, UNCENSORED, it truely is the funniest show out there. TRG’s would do extremely well in the satallite world. Even though I love TRG’s I can’t go back to listening to commercials every 3 mins and listening to Larry and Eric dance around trying not to get fired for saying what the moral police at the FCC deem to be offensive. Thank God they are back!

For the critics who posted their negative comments, please check the owner manual that came with your radio. Most of the newer radios, these days, come with a number of new features. One is the ‘Off button’. Some radios do not have an ‘Off button’ or a ‘Power button’, but turning the volume control all the way down will produce a ‘Click’ sound that indicates the radio has been turned off. In this manner, you can turn your radio off!

Also, many newer radios also have a mechanism that allows you to receive a number of channels. This feature allows you to listen to a station other than the one the regular guys are broadcasting on. This allows me to listen to the Regular Guys on MY RADIO, while, at the same time, you can be listening to something else on YOUR RADIO. Isn’t technology marvelous?

These guys are bright, witty and informed. Much of their act involves ‘sarcasm’ or ‘exaggeration. www.m-w.com contains a dictionary feature which will allow you to learn the meaning of these words.

Also, for the duration of the next year, the Constitution is still in effect. This allows me to find humor in topics which may offend you. I know you will find this shocking and disgusting. However, the way it works, you are allow to find humor in things I which may offend me! Isn’t freedom grand?

So, while we are still allowed, I plan on enjoying the Regular Guys and having a great laugh.

So far I am loving this new station. It’s like they took the best of 99X and 96rock and combined them into one station. The play list is great, I can’t say I’ve heard the same song twice in one day so far, and I’ve heard a lot of songs I haven’t heard on the radio in years. So glad to hear the Regular Guys back on. Can’t help but laugh at the nay sayers above, some of you really need to take a look at yourselves before speaking of others.

Don’t know about these Matt C and Lewis characters. I’d really like to hear Tim Rhodes on this station.
