2/12: Rocker breaks steroid news to Regular Guys & Kincade, Axel & strike updates, saving FNL

John Rocker, the former Braves pitcher, has been a friend of the Regular Guys for years. On Monday morning, he spoke with them and fessed up about steroids.
Former major league pitcher John Rocker said Monday that baseball commissioner Bud Selig knew he failed a drug test in 2000 and that doctors for the “league” and the “players association” advised him and several Texas Rangers teammates on how to effectively use steroids.
Rocker, no stranger to controversy, made those comments on Atlanta radio station Rock 100.5.
John Kincade and Buck Belue got more from Rocker later that day.
“Bud Selig knew in the year 2000 John Rocker was taking the juice,” the former pitcher said Monday of the baseball commissioner on Atlanta radio station 680, according to the Associated Press. “Didn’t do anything about it.”
This differs from the story he told ESPN a year ago when he downplayed steroid use by baseball players.
At the Van Halen concert last night, I also ran into Axel Lowe, the most prominent survivor from the transition to Rock 100.5 from 99X. He’s always been a metal head so he’s happy to play Motley Crue and Guns ‘n Roses. He figures Steve Craig will land at an adult alternative station (Dave perhaps?) once his eight months on his existing contract are up. Leslie Fram had no real effective control over programming the last two years anyway. Now, she can write her own ticket. He said given Matt Jones’ schedule and his wife’s job, he prefers the overnight schedule over middays. (He doesn’t know who that mid-day job will go to yet but thinks it will probably be a woman.)
Axel himself once wanted to do mornings (and subbed in briefly after Toucher left and before Demery showed up) but realizes that afternoons is a more stable gig with better hours. He was also very upbeat about 99x.com and the future of the Internet on the car radio. I namedropped the new gal Jillian but he didn’t make any comments about her specifically, positive or negative. Then VH was about to start so we had to abruptly end the conversation.
The writers strike is nearly over. E! has compiled a nice update on what will happen to your favorite shows..
Beloved but ratings challenged “Friday Night Lights” aired what could have been its last episode last Friday. Now several campaigns are trying to save it after comments by NBC exec Ben Silverman that its future was in doubt. The show has been pulling in only 5 to 6 million viewers a week on Friday nights its second season. Folks are hoping to emulate “Jericho,” which came back after a concerted effort by fans for seven episodes.

If Selig knew Rocker was using steroids and the players association knew and their medical personnel knew, then Selig should resign; the head of the players association resign; and the doctors lose their license. This is outrageous and a disgrace to the sport and the players who choose to abide by the rules.

So what? Half of baseball does. What is funny is that the few players that did come forward were all white. So funny how the thugs never step and admit when they are wrong. It’s never their fault. Just look at those thug NBA and NFL players. ALWAYS in trouble.

Hey B.S. personal opinions aside, don’t you think Rocker should be viewed as 100% credible. I mean this guy has never held his tongue and never been called a liar. A lot of people just didn’t agree with his opinions of society. If he can admit his own guilt I think it be logical to listen to the guy as being somewhat of a valid source.

I think it’s great the Regular Guys are back. Sure beats all that other boring crap in the morning! As for Rocker, there’s no telling what all he was on. I don’t know if he’s got his figures right but I imagine the number is high on players of all sports taking some type of performance enhancing drug. And Selig, I’m sure he knows what’s happening. And probably should resign. He’s lost control of baseball.

Another white player admits he took drugs, but nothing happens. That’s not quite what Rocker said. What I heard him say on the radio was after the meeting was over the doc’s told them it wasn’t the worst thing for them, just not to mix and match their drug of choice.
That’s very different than ‘how to effectively use’ them. Effective implies that they were being advised of how to gain maximum output. In fact, they were teaching the guys how to avoid long-term damage from doing something they were going to do anyway.
This reminds me of the abstenence vs. birth control debate.

ss, I am no dog and neither is Lakeesha. This is a perfect example of actions of white athletes being covered up—you can bet Rocker is not the first—and the actions being over looked as nothing.
As a former amature bodybuilder in the early years of female bodybuilding, I can tell you there were lots of men and women using steroids and 99% of them were caucasian. It is why so many non-whites see through the systemic racism and white privilege, which is a regular practice in this country and have no problem pointing it out when it raises its ugly head on a daily basis.

I don’t care for Bonds but if you put as astorick by his name, then by golly, put one by the teams who won championships with players who took steroids. I just think a whole heck of alot of players were using these drugs. How can you disparage a few people who really excelled when obviously teams knew and looked away. It’s just a back eye for baseball and especially Bud Selig.

I really don’t think this is a racial issue, but considering that it’s the AJC, there are always fringe elements on both sides who will turn it into one. Personally I’m inclined to believe Rocker, if anything he’s always been too honest and direct for his own good.

What the hell? Why did this become a race thing? I am always amazed at how a good discussion becomes schoolyard bantor in these blogs. Life isn’t fair..people make mistakes, people lie about mistakes, and people sometimes do wrong things for on the surface the right thing.
If you throw Barry under the bus..throw Big Mac as well. He lied no bigger , no less than Barry. Barry needs to come clean or test positive. Which has happened to this date. As long as there is money involved there will always be a way to get around something illegal. There will always be loop holes in the system. Think about it here in America we have thrown billions of dollars to stop the use or sale of illiegal drugs..ha sany penny really been well spent? Can anyone Black or White get any drug they so desire with very little issue? Regardless of the size of their city or town. Its money and since it involves money some will be protected and some will be sacraficed like goats. Others will run to the chopping block so they can say they did the right thing. And of course say they were sorry. Steroids made a lot of people money..and it may never be 100% removed from sports. Until athletes are paid like the fans who support them..the next edge will always be worth a lot money and eventually a lot of heartache.

It matters not whether they were illegal by baseball standards in 2000, what matters is our great Commissioner knew or allegedly knew what was going on, he knew they were harmful and he turned his head. That, my friends, is NOT a good example of a top echelon boss. If you had an employee who you knew was using illegal drugs, would you turn your head and act like it wasn’t going on? I don’t think so.

On Topic Steriods were not banned in 2000. Selig has proven he is a greedy fool, Bonds lied under oath. There is not racial issue as far as a MLB steriod investigation goes. A number of players of caucasian (Clemmens Knoblauch and Petitt), black(_) and hispanic (Urbina, Sosa) decent are being investigate for the “now ” illegal use of steriods in baseball. These are the present facts.
Off Topic All this banter about treatment of one race vs. another, I blame on the AJC and other pandering media outlets. They constantly cater to the uneducated on both sides of the race issue with stories about killings and crime……. Stories that ram the hip hop culture down the readers throats as though it is mainstream, the divede between the haves and the have nots, and at least 4 stories a year on Tyler…oops “Mr.” Perry, Jermaine Dupree or the like. I personally don’t have anything against these successful people (other than that Mr. Perry thing… Pure pompus ego…a flaw in an otherwise intelligent driven person), but I care not to know what they did last night, or what they are eating for breakfast.
There are many other successful black people, and white people that are not involved in entertainment that the media (AJC) could profile as examples of our communities. Sorry to say this, but Atlanta is the laughing stock of any major city in our country because of the bullsh_t that our media outlets serve to us daily. They don’t inform, they dumb us down, while every other major city moves forward.
Black people and white people need to get past this and hold these purveyors of controversy to a higher standard.

What a great show that is. Besides the one plot misstep (as, it seems, with every other good show this past season… Lost, Heroes, etc.), this show is brilliantly acted, directed, and produced. These are talented people who are suffering from a time slot that alienates their biggest demographic - teens who aren’t at home on Friday nights because they’re watching actual high school sports.
