2/19: Flip Spiceland leaving WXIA

flip spiceland.jpg

Veteran meteorologist Flip Spiceland at WXIA-TV is leaving the station after seven years. He was at CNN for 21 years prior to that.

It’s not clear whether it was budgetary or strategic or whatnot. WXIA general manager Bob Walker said they negotiated but couldn’t come to an agreement. “I chose not to accept the offer,” he wrote in an email, without specifying whether it was lower than his last contract or simply inadequate in his mind. He wrote he doesn’t have another job lined up.

Flip has always been a smooth operator on screen and his name is arguably the most memorable in town among broadcasters. Chris Holcomb is going to cover for Flip when he leaves Feb. 27 or 28, Walker said. Then they are going to search for a replacement. Holcomb is in the running.

The station recently lost Blair Meeks to Jackson Spalding PR. It’s unclear how they are going to fill Meeks’ spot.

And Walker said his four “backpack journalists” are doing a great job and have helped WXIA place more people in more places on the streets of metro Atlanta.

First Clarence moves, now Flip is leaving. He is hilarious and seems to be a great part of the team. Very personable and knowledgable. What a shame. Thanks for making me laugh Flip and good luck

Flip will be missed. I remember watching him on CNN when I lived in Ohio. When I moved to Atlanta 3 years ago I was happy to see Flip again. I hope he gets a job at another station in Atlanta - I would toon in.

Jill is going to have to run the show. First Clarence, now Flip?!! I may not be able to muster the energy to go into work in the mornings. They were such a great team. If my homegirl Jill goes, I’ve giving up on local news, forever. I’m serious folks!

Flip was forced out at WXIA. Walker can say what he wants. They have wanted Flip gone for a while. Holcomb will do the mornings and Adamson will do the weekends for now. It will save them plenty and that is goal at any Gannett station.

Flip is awful. If you ever want to know what the weather WON’T be like, watch him. How can one person be so wrong so many times??

It was time for Flip to go. His act was tired before he ever started at 11Alive. Chirs Hoclomb or Steve Adamson will do a far more competent job in that position. When bad weather was looming, how many of you really thought Flip was the source to turn to? Not too many.

Flip is a very knowledgable man. Clarence was very intelligent and aided an air of sophistication to the show. Whatever WXIA is trying to do, it is not working. I now have to find another early morning news program.

Oh no!! Flip is the best! I love the way he explains the way things work and why they happen. He is so good. When I talk about the weather I always say, “well Flip told me that it is suppose to rain today.” That’s sad that he’s leaving. :(

Flip was the worst. He had no idea about weather forecasting. I never like to see someone lose a job, but the ratings are not good for WXIA and Flip in the morning was not helping them as it was stated earlier it was time for him to go.

By Shannon

February 20, 2008 9:01 AM | Link to this

How can you not like Flip? I don’t even care if his forcast is right or not. He’s just a likeable guy and the morning’s will NOT be the same without him. Shame on the station for not working something out.

By jct

February 20, 2008 9:04 AM | Link to this

Whom shall I watch? I can’t stand the other weather people on 11. Flip was just about the facts. He was a weather person who was not an alarmist. He did not see bad weather as an ‘event.’

I am so distressed. I loved Flip, Jill and Clarence.

If they replace Flip with Chris Holcomb than I will watch BBC news. I just don’t like the way he does the weather.

By Robo

February 20, 2008 9:09 AM | Link to this

You don’t even care if his forecast is right? Come on! You are making my point! You can’t have a morning weatherman who knows nothing about the weather. Fine cast this great guy, Flip in another role. Just not as a weatherman.

By Jackson

February 20, 2008 9:14 AM | Link to this

Flip was not an alarmist because he had no idea what was going to turn into bad weather and what was going to turn out to be sunny and 80. He should have been a feature guy, a talkshow host or something, not a forecaster. 11Alive will do much better with Chris Holcomb or Steve Adamson in there. All you Flip lovers give it time. Obviously by the decline in ratings Flip was not a big draw. I like the idea of Karen and Jill together. Lets see how a new weatherman fits in.

By Clarence

Watch the BBC or TASS News Agency. You will get a more accurate forecast than Flip provided on his best day.

February 20, 2008 9:51 AM | Link to this

Clarence was moved to the weekend evening anchor position, but probably only until is contract expires.

WXIA is cutting costs and Holcomb in the mornings and Adamson on the weekends combine to make not much more than Flip was making himself.

By Jack in The Know

February 20, 2008 9:57 AM | Link to this

No one asked me, but I think this is a good move. Flip was a from a time gone past and just lacked the education and skills to be a reliable forecaster. I think there is a role for him TV, but not the one he was doing at WXIA.

Hate to see Flip go. How ‘bout Laura Huckabee or Dagmar Midcap from CBS 46? They are both hot and deserve better than that lousy station.

Meteorology is an inexact science. Please name another local weather person who does it better. They all have the same information. You want a serious forcast without personality, turn on the Weather Channel.

Thanks Stephen, I dont know about you, but I prefer the weather ladies to be good looking and intelligent. Translation = HOT. You were probably a big fan of Russ Minchew at Channel 2 or was it Channel 11 back in the 80s.

By Stephen

February 20, 2008 10:23 AM | Link to this

The Weather Channel is about the least accurate forecast around. Look this is all subjective. What one person likes maybe different than another. Obviously, Shannon, you are a big Flip fan. However, the budget crunch at WXIA and the low ratings in the morning forced their hand to make changes.

I’m sorry to see Flip leaving, but Chris Holcomb is more than capable to carry on in his place. Chris has always done a great job explaining different aspects of the weather to the viewers, and has often worked long hours when there were weather problems. I hope that WXIA will allow Chris to “carry the ball”; and good luck to you Flip.

By Kirsten

February 21, 2008 10:32 PM | Link to this

I could not agree more that Chris deserves the morning job and this allows 11Alive to also raise the on-air profile of Steve Adamson who has been here for years and deserves a more consistent role. Chris in the morning and Steve on the weekends will give 11Alive the two very good forecasters in key roles.

We are so upset that Flip is leaving!! We’ve always thought he was too good to be on a local station anyway, so we’ve felt lucky to have him in our local market at all. He deserves a network prime-time position. He was our draw to WXIA. We my change our preferences now.

Flip was the greatest! He knows more about the weather than Paul Ossman ever forgot. Flip should have been doing the evening news. Chris Holcombe is acceptable but Steve Adamson is a geek. If you were rating this team based on popularity with the viewers, Flip is at the top of the list.

This should have happened years ago. Flip was such a drag on that whole morning show. He sunk the show everytime he opened is mouth to begin another long, run on sentence about nothing. Chris Holcomb is not much better with his gee folks, country bumpkin facade, but he can’t be any worse. Paul Ossmann and Steve Adamson are the reasons to watch 11Alive weather. Flip enjoy your long past due retirement.

I just heard this morning that Flip is leaving, and I’m very unhappy about it. Mornings just won’t be the same. If he does go to another local station, so will I. Jill’s great, but she can’t carry it alone, and that’s just about where they are as far as morning talent now. I’m sure this is all about money, but the bottom line is still ratings and WXIA should prepare for a drop.

Like most mornings I get up prior to 7 a.m. so I can catch Flip’s weather report. I didn’t realize he was leaving until I heard Jill saying goodbye to him this morning. I was saddened. I make a point of tuning in to 11Alive each morning and the main reason is to see him. He is so personable and fun. He may not hit the weather report on the nose, but which meteorologist does? He made the start of my morning fun. I will truly miss him. I wish him all of the luck in the world. Go Flip!

I will really miss Skip, and I thought he added a lot to the morning show. When Channel 11 had the team of Jill, Clarence, and Skip, the chemistry was perfect. Excellent anchors, enough humor to keep it lively, and a good way to start the day. I’ve been watching Channel 11 since the days of Guy Sharpe and Phil Suit in the morning (OK, so I’m old!)but it won’t be the same without Flip.

Ratings for the morning program are awful. Why do you think all the changes. First Clarence, then Flip. If you fail to produce in your job, it means you will be let go. Low ratings, means failing to produce.

I’m very disappointed in WXIA. No one has been able to fill the void, with the viewers, that was left by Guy Sharpe until Flip. I can understand the end of Clarence if low ratings was the problem. Apparently WXIA has forgotten the dismal replacements the long suffering viewers had to endure (B.F.) Before Flip. I’ll be watching for you Flip. Good luck!

The resident queen, Jill Becker, (the white version of Monica)read a “heartfelt” goodby to Flip this morning with all the emotion of watching grass grow. It really flipped me out because it caught me by surprise. And then Karen reaches over behind her and picks up a box of doughnuts from Krispy Kreme off the floor!!!and slides them over to Flip! Krispy Kreme?!?!!Krispy Kreme???? Flip just ignored the special sentiment. Why didn’t they just give him a bus ticket to Tupelo? Good luck, Flip, I enjoyed watching you. And by the way, just before that little gnome Guy Sharpe left I talked to him on the phone and he told me that Chris Holcomb was the next greatest thing in weather in Atlanta. How long ago was that!! If you think that Flip was sleasy looking what about Steve Adamson? Good luck Flip.

Flip was so bad. He plain stunk at what did. It makes my day to know I wont hear him making no sense in the morning. His mere presence lowered the quality of the entire morning show. A great weather team of Paul, Steve, and Chris was made to look foolish because of Flip.

By Bob

Strange how so many are so learned in the shortcomings of Flip Spiceland. Makes one wonder how they became so knowlegeable of someone that they never watched. Chris Holcomb will fill in well enough. How old is he now? 19? Steve Adamson may be the worst on-air meteorologist that I’ve ever seen. He may know weather but he knows nothing of articulately conveying that knowledge. Highly unprofessional in his delivery. Paul Ossman is better at interviewing children and working out than he is as a meteorologist. Just accurately give me the temp, expected high and low, and a reasonable 24-48 hour forecast in a professional manner. Anything else is pretty much a waste of airtime. At least Flip never took himself too seriously.

With his popularity and talents you can bet Flip’s phone will ring off the hook during the next few days with offers inside and outside of broadcasting. Flip now is the time to reflect upon all this as 11-Alive having been a stepping stone for greater things to come. Good luck.

Reading all this I think it is obvious that this is all so opinion based and there is no right, there is no wrong. People love Flip, people hate Flip. Flip knows everything, Flip knows nothing. Chris is great, Chris is a disaster. Steve is smart and hot, Steve is dumb and ugly. In the end this job is driven by the whims of News Directors and Station Managers and what the public thinks does not really matter. As long as a few dollars are saved and profits continue all the rest is just internet fodder.

Chris Holcomb looks like he washed his face in acid. Flip was fine, if you want a gameshow host to deliver your forecast. Steve Adamson is hands down the best on-air weather forecaster in Atlanta. Paul is the only other one on any station that comes even close.

This all so pathetic. Write what you want, but Flip is not coming back to 11Alive. If you don’t like who they have on the TV now, change the channel. It is easy and free to do. All these personal attacks on Flip, Chris, Steve, and Paul need to stop. They are all good people. I have seen Steve at my church. He is a good Christian man who would never speak ill of anyone. Chris is a fine gentleman who carries himself with class and dignity. Let Flip retire with some pride and sense of accomplishment.

Steve Adamson is so hot! There are so few hot guys here on TV. We need more of them. Steve is really, really fine!! Even better looking now with his short hair. The fact that he seems so smart is just an added bonus.

Brilliant! 11Alive replaced the aging porn-star (Flip) with the incompetent deputy, Barney Fife (Chris).

We’ve enjoyed waking up with Flip for years. We wish him well and hope he will return on a local program. Best of luck to him! We are disappointed with 11Alive.

Flip was the greatest! Were Steve Adamson and Alfred E. Neumann separated at birth? I am sure Steve and Paul Ossman are afraid of high definition television. If not, they should be. The girls that think Steve is hot should see an optometrist.

11 Alive had the best morning show with Flip, Clarence, Jill, and Randy. I can’t believe the ratings were down. I have been a loyal 11 Alive morning show watcher for many, many years, however I’ve always felt their evening news had alot to be desired so I watched 5 or 2. Flip, and Randy always had a wonderful relationship on air and I will miss them interacting with each other. I’m deeply disappointed in 11 Alive and even though I don’t have anything against Chris, I’ll probably move on to another station now.

11 alive has lost its mind as well as many viewers. Skip Blair who next? If you can not find the money to pay this talent then I guess I can not find the time to watch 11 alive. Even more of a reason to watch Fox…….

Way too much critism of all these guys here…Chris’ face washed with acid? Please…Flip sleazy?…Where did that come from? Steve can’t talk right?…You must be watching someone else, he’s smooth as can be…Too much of people stretching it a bit too far here.

Flip should try to get a job to at FOX to replace Ken Cook as someone else suggested…Ken is definitely wrong more than anybody else and he loves to balme the computers instead of himself…Both Steve and Chris are great meteorologists and will do fine in whatever roles they do

Flip always acted like he was Gods gift to the TV. He was so worried about his hair being out of place and his corny, sleazy remarks, that no wonder he couldn’t do the weather. He always walked lopsided in front of the weathermap. And I do know where he went to work. He is working for The Facility Group as a public relations guy. So no more weather or air time for Flip.

You would think 40 years on tv would earn the guy some retirement time, wouldn’t you? I liked watching him in the mornings, and he will be missed. His forecast was always more accurate than anyone else’s.

Flip…why are you leaving if you don’t already have a job lined-up? Atlanta is a great city and you do a great job and I know the pay has to be good. You will be missed but it is also my question as to why Chris Holcombe, who has been passed over many times, is not GIVEN THE JOB. Hi is very professional, knowledge, etc. Give the man a chance at the top spot. He deserves that.

It’s all about personality, and Flip definitely has that. He’s the best in the city. I can’t believe you people who actually blame him for the forecasts! Like someone said “What the Westher Channel” if that’s all you want. Chris is fine. I like him. Steve is ultra dull, so much so that I did not even notice he was “hot”. Best wishes, Flip!

This is sad news to hear. I enjoyed watching his forecasts and the banter he had with Jill, Clarence & Randy. I guess nothing can last forever. I enjoyed the fact that he didn’t over react like some other stations (WSB 2) comes to mind. I’ve learned that 11Alive is the most reliable out of the Atlanta stations. Well I wish him well..and I’ll just look up the weather online.

I’ve been missing Flip and so this morning googled him to see what happened. I can’t believe I missed his farewell. I agree with all the folks who said they enjoyed the Clarence, Jill, Randy, and Flip team. I’m not feeling the Karen vibe and now that Flip is gone, the show will really be lacking. Chris Holcomb is Ok but Steve Adamson is horrible. Geek doesn’t even begin to describe him. He has no on air personality and for those who think he’s hot, what are you looking at? Let’s hope they find someone soon who will add some “spice” to the mornings. Please Jill and Randy, don’t leave us!

I hope Chris Holcomb will be Flip’s replacement. I had almost stopped watching 11 News because of Flip Spiceland. He couldn’t be sillier, or cockier. He really thinks a lot of himself. I really like Chris ~ I just hope he doesn’t turn silly ~ like the majority of weathermen. What is it with silly weathermen? I also really like Clarence and miss him on the morning news.

He could be a bit goofy, but I was both informed and entertained by Flip. I hate to see him go, HE actually had some personality that, thus far, I haven’t really seen in the others. And, to you folks who think the tv talent have to be ALL science and no personality… well, I actually LIKE being entertained when a storm is beating down my door; so get over your pretentious selves. Oh, and the forced “trying to hard” personality of the new morning co-anchor (those commercials were embarrassing) isn’t working either. I am afraid I’m with some of you guys…Dagmar (worst name in media, sorry) here I come. My wife is going to kill me for that!

Jill is the Southern Belle in the morning and Flip was the gentleman. Clarence was the sophisticate. Our family misses him a lot too. If Jill leaves we will just tune in somewhere else, radio or another station. Karyn’s goofy laugh is too much in the mornings and Randy bias to basketball doesn’t make any sense!! WXIA, listen up. TAKE CARE OF JILL. Flip, you’ll be sincerely missed by my family. Best of luck and we hope you stay local…..

I am saddened to learn that Flip Spiceland will no longer be with ll Alive. He was by far the best weatherman in the Atlanta metro area. It makes no sense to me that a man of this caliber was allowed to leave.

I do not like the person who is “in the running” to replace Flip, so I will no longer be watching ll Alive in the a.m.

We missed the announcement; figured he was just on vacation. So sorry he’s gone away. We used to watch him on Ch. 20 in Spfld, IL, in the ’70s. He was really young then. People made jokes about him, said he didn’t wear shoes on the set because they never showed his feet.

I am very sad that Flip is gone. I missed his goodbye. He and Randy made such a good team. It was actually fun watching the news in the mornings. Flip had such a great personality. Very few weathermen get it right every time. Flip at least made the weather interesting and entertaining. I hope he goes to a local station and takes Randy with him. Good luck, Flip

GOD,

I hate this. I watched every morning just so that I could see and listen to Flip. He brought something special to the team. Chris is nice but he just doesn’t have what it takes. Flip could throw out a quip in a second and I’d be amused all day. I wish 11-Alive would reconsider. He was worth every dollar.

I’m saddened by Flip’s departure…as comedian Lewis Black points out, the Latin word for weatherman is…liar. All forecasters are wrong a good deal of the time so the distinguishing factors for tuning in or not become intelligence and personality. Flip has both in abundance in addition to a charming self effacing humor. Holcomb is inoffensive enough and Steve Adamson is a sleepy, inarticulate Stan Laurel look-alike whom I expect at any minute will cluelessly scratch the top of his head and ask ‘What’ll we do now Ollie’? However the overwhelming winner of biggest moron on 11Alive goes to Paul “I play golf wearing makeup’ Ossman, who on the night of the tornado eclipsed his own standards of incompetence and idiocy. Moments after the stadium authority announced that Ga. Dome engineers had inspected the damage to the roof and that there were no serious injuries to fans at the SEC playoffs, while the tornado was ripping through the heart of downtown, I began switching between stations to get a idea of the forecast. Paul Ossman literally said, ‘I’m not in charge but my advice to all those people down at the Ga. Dome is (wait for it)… that building isn’t safe…those people need to get out of there as soon as possible and get to there cars and get away from the tornado. The anchor was so aghast at Ossman’s stupidity and dangerous advice that after an uncomfortable silence he tried to explain to the buffoon that he didn’t know how far away there cars were, where they lived, and the fact that thousands were staying in DOWNTOWN hotel rooms which were being destroyed at that precise moment!!!Ossman was unswayed by reason, logic, or intelligent thought… “I don’t care what they say(Stadium engineers), those people need to get out of there. While Glenn Burns, and Ken Cook were advising citizens of the danger, and stressing that Atlantans should take shelter(DUHHHH!) the brainless twit, Paul Ossman was imploring people to run outside into the teeth of a 130mph tornado! Quite simply this is unforgiveable incompetence bordering on criminal negligence and if 11Alive wants to cut payroll I can see no better candidate than the oafish, imbecilic, improvident lackwit of a ‘weatherman’ Paul’Hi, welcome to Wal-Mart’ Ossman! Flip Spiceland, you will be missed…thank you for all your professional skills and wit.Best of luck to you in all your endeavors!

Did you all know that 11Alive had its best ratings in the morning for the 4 week period starting March 3rd and ending March 28th, that it has had in the last year? Since Flip left more people have tuned in. So you same 5 people who keep trying to keep this thread alive, move on. Flip left on his own, and has a job outside of Televison, making very good money. He has moved on, why can’t you 5 people? As for you Mark, you are a liar. Paul stated that while there was a window of opportunity and the tornado producing storm had moved to the east, and the next line of storms was brewing to the west, now would be a good time to clear the area out. Paul, Chris, and Steve are smart, articulate, good people, who have far better things to do than post on invisible message boards. Of course being an unemployed, lying hack, like yourself Mark, you don’t. 11Alive has a great, trusted weather team. Flip was a good guy, he chose to leave. Why do you all feel it necesary to bash everyone else because of that? Change the channel. Chris, Steve, and Paul are secure enough in their jobs not to cry if you do.
