2/29: Kicks & Eagle staffs blown out
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ABOVE: Cadillac will remain. Kristen, who was with him as the Kicks morning team for two years, is out.

ABOVE: Rhubarb Jones is out after 22-plus years. Dallas McCade survives, though she might end up at Kicks.
I spoke too soon about it being a quiet day. (See my previous blog entry.)
Instead, we’ve got what is already being dubbed the Leap Day Massaacre.
Management at Eagles and Kicks Friday dumped nearly the entire on-air staff in what appears to be a severe cost-cutting measure.
The only major survivors: Cadillac Jack, Dallas McCade and Bill Celler. I hear traffic guy Greg Talmadge will remain, too.
Gone? Veteran Kicks news man Jim Vann, Eagle morning man Rhubarb Jones, Kicks morning co-host Kristen Gates, Kicks afternoon DJ Wylie Rose, Eagle afternoon jock Steve Mitchell and Eagle mid-day gal Sandy Weaver, Kicks night-time jock Scotty O’Brien, and promotions guru Buck in the Truck, to name a few. I also heard former “Kimmer” sidekick Wayne “No Offense” Kitchens is out as Eagle morning producer after just a month.
It was ugly and quick. It also looks like Eagle 106.7 will be toast very very soon, replaced by something else. My sources say Citadel, the new owners, are interested in bringing Imus on air at 106.7 and perhaps turn it into a talk station. Another format change could be oldies. I presume they have to keep NASCAR around regardless.
No word yet from Rick Mack, the general sales manager who had to dole out the bad news. I’ve also tried to reach Weaver, Buck and Rhubarb. I’ll post comments from them if I get them. KIcks is now using some weekend jock while Eagle is now being automated with no jocks at all.
“It’s horrible but it’s the radio business,” Mitchell said, matter of factly. He was not under contract and is ready to work anywhere else Monday. In preparation for this, he already has built his own production company.
Citadel, the Kicks/Eagle owner, yesterday reported a nasty loss nationwide and promised swift changes. Well, here is one of them, an obvious major cost-cutting measure.
“I’m glad I’m on the outside looking in,” said Moby, who worked as morning host at Kicks from 1991 to 2002 and now runs his own syndication deal. He is heard on the Bear in Griffin, South 107.1 in Rome and WNGC-FM in Athens.
Rhubarb Jones was on the air for more than 22 years, the longest running morning jock in town. Mr. Charity is also one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet. He’s got a good heart but even he knew things were winding down for him at Eagle. They cut his hours a few months back to boot.
“Rhubarb Jones is the second person I ever called about getting into radio and he gave me great advice,” said Cledus T. Judd, the country parody singer and new morning host at rival 94.9/The Bull. “He’s an absolute class act and radio legend. For all the good he’s done in radio, he’s twice as good a person. Kristen is a good friend of mine, a class act as well. I absolutely hate with a passion to see those people lose their jobs.”
“It breaks my heart for Rhubarb,” said Mike Stiles, who worked at WYAY back in the late 1980s. “This looks like another let’s-get-rid-of-talent affair. I have no idea how you win that way.”
What do you think? I’ll add more to this blog entry as I get more details and more reactions. This is just more insanity in Atlanta radio, which has also featured a major station move signals, four new morning shows and the return of the Regular Guys and Steve & Vikki (in July) on new signals.

WWWWHHHHAAAATTTTT???????
Can I get a refund of my CountryFair tickets?
WHY would you fire Jim Vann?????? I grew up listening to that guy doing the traffic and interacting with the various Kicks morning shows.
The Kicks of old was a GREAT station (and I’m including Wylie on that). Why do they have to mess with it so???

i am shocked, esp about kristen gates. kristen and caddy in the mornings was the best morning show on the air. i can’t believe that they would break those 2 up. and if 106.7 turns into talk radio they just lost a listener.

Rhubarb has been an ICON here for so many years that I promise to immediately switch to, and stay with, whichever station is smart enough to have him on the air-hopefully by Monday morning.

Rubarb and Steve Mitchell?! What are they thinking?! I hope the new format falls flat! I also hope Dallas McCade leaves too (with Rubarb). They were great together! Why do these radio stations mess up good things? First Randy and Spiff and now Rubarb and Dallas!!

I have never lived in a city where there is so much turnover in the radio industry. This is crazy! I’ve been listening to the Bull in the mornings because a friend is part of that morning show, but who knows how long that will last! Not to mention, The Regular Guys are back AGAIN. This just shows that these media companies recognize when mistakes are made in firing popular local radio personalities and ratings suffer for long periods of time thereafter. It’s just frustrating for listeners to have to wait for the mistakes to be realized and popular personalities to be picked up by other stations!

This is a bunch of crap..Rhubarb has been my favorite for the past 20 years. Of course it’s not just country radio in Atlanta that’s going downhill, it’s all radio..So from now on, I’ll stick to CD’s..Or Moby & Cledus..Real radio for real fans..

I fully agree with Jim …. Rhubarb was not only wonderful on air, he did so much for the community on his own time! The new owners are really going to be sorry. Besides, talk radio belongs on AM not FM. I will be switching my station as soon as I get off work - Rhubarb and Steve were my drive partners and they will be sorely missed.

They should have included Caddy in the firings? Why was he left? Caddy and Kirsten had the most annoying morning show I’ve ever heard. I was a loyal listener before they became the new morning show. Not sure why you would fire a legend like Jim Vann, but in corporate America there are no feelings so it’s not really a shock. Atlanta’s morning shows are kind of like Atlanta’s professional sports teams - you know they are there but you don’t really care!
By Karen

Why?! I (and I lot of other people) love Wylie in the afternoon, after Caddie left for the mornings, I knew it would be hard to fill his shoes, but she was doing a great job. And Kristen is great with Caddie, they make my more morning drive so much more relaxing. I know what I these execs will get for Christmas… a bunch of coal in their stockings

I must admit, Southside Steve was a major turn off for me. (Yes, Steve. You’re sort-of hot for an old guy but WAAAAAAAAAY TO SHALLOW!) After a while, I started listening to The Bull … even though I felt like I was turning my back on the other DJs. In January, Cledus T. Judd became the new morning host on The Bull and is doing an absolutely incredible job!!! I’ll have to agree with Lakerat, The Bull would be stupid not to snatch up Rhubarb … and some of the others for that matter! NO MORE 101.5 AND 106.7 FOR ME! I’m a loyal Bull fan now!

I can’t believe they are removing Rhubarb and even Kristen. I drove to and from work listening to Rhubarb, but listened to Kristen at work. My radio didn’t pick up too well inside. I even called my husband to tell him. We love Rhubarb. He has always treated us and our adopted little girl with so much respect and friendship. I will not be listening anymore to Kicks at work or while I am driving. We will be on the outlook as to where Rhubarb will be next. The good will win and Rhubarb was the best. He gave his all to everyone he met.

Firing Jim Vann & Rhubarb Jones is the single stupidest thing I’ve heard in a very long time. Why did Eagle fire Rhubarb and keep that hussy Dallas? She’s as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

The format won’t be the same without Rhubarb Jones… The Eagle is officially off my dial settings. Kicks screwed up years ago getting rid of Moby, now we’ve lost Rhubarb. I would love to know if this huge change was actually due to low ratings or if it’s just a case of overly ambitious management attempting to make yet another ‘new and improved’ radio station in Atlanta…

I see a post that suggests if 106.7 goes talk, it is high time to bring the Kimmer back. Holy CRAP! That would be THE silver lining on this cloud if Kimmer were brought back. Atlanta radio has not been the same for me since Kim left. If anyone knows how to get in touch with the Kimmer, let him know he still has fans here in Atlanta that would love having him back! Same to the execs at 106.7!

I can’t believe this!!! Been listening to 106.7 in the morning since high school (yes, it was that long ago), I grew up listening to Rhubarb and of course it is a preset on my radio, well I guess it’s gone now. Who comes up with these ideas? Do they just sit back and say ” OK been here forever time to get rid of you.” He’s a great man for his community like Moby, it’s a sad day for ATL radio.

It totally blows me away the way Radio management is not loyal to their DJ’s. Rhubarb and Dallas were like peas and carrots. It doesn’t make sense to separate them. The only problem either of the stations was, was just playing the same songs over so much, when there are so many great country songs that could be added in the broadcast. Say play three new/current songs and a couple of classic country songs. Don’t forget about the great singer/songwriters from the past. And don’t forget to treat people like you like to be treated. I think you owe all of these DJ’s a big apology. You advertised about being a loyal listener and then you just go and blow everyone away with your stupidity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate the thought of there being one less country station! I like being able to switch around to other country stations, when the other’s are on commerical break. Not having 106.7 leaves only 3 country stations and 106.1 doesn’t come in that great when you’re close to Atlanta.
Rhubarb? Jim Vann? Kristen Gates? Come on! These are all great DJ’s! Why would you let them go? Heck, I am still baffelled by the firing of Moby all those years ago! Too country??? HELLO!!!! We live in the south, where SOUTHERN people live and where people enjoy country music!People like to hear folks that sound like them on the radio. Is Georgia not filled with areas that are country? Not every city or town in Ga is filled with city folk like Atlanta!
Save Country Radio!!!! Quite firing all the country talent!

Since moving to Atlanta 3 years ago, I have never scene such turn-over in the radio station business. How do these stations maintain a strong listener base when they change the on-air staff or reformat the station consistently. It seems they want the listeners to buy into satellite radio instead of listening to their station and advertisers.
For me, it just means that I will listen to CD’s or MP3’s more. Atlanta radio is a joke right now. Maybe it is time to do away with the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which started all of this. Cities like Indianapolis, Tampa, Houston, and Nashville have a better network on radio stations (more variety for a large base of listeners). I wish Atlanta would do the same.

Mark, just because you listen to country radio doesn’t make you a redneck! Also, even if you are a redneck, what makes you ignorant?
Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean that it sucks; that is just your opinion, which you are entitled to, however that doesn’t give you the right to knock what others enjoy!
To everyone that has a problem with “southern” or “country” people— MOVE! You live in the south, where you are going to encounter people with southern accents, who listen to country music and GASP…rednecks! I bet you wouldn’t find such people up north…..just a though!

This breaks my heart, especially when it comes to Jim Vann and Rhubarb Jones. They ARE icons, and not because they’re resting on their laurels. They know this city and their listeners inside and out. Shame on these new owners. They don’t care about what their listeners care about, and that is people on the air who KNOW WHO WE ARE!

I sincerely hope that it was not really Southside Steve that did the post as Southside Z because if it was, he’s showing that he truly is ignorant. I listened to him when he was on with the Regular Guys and my husband loved their skits and he seemed like a pretty good guy. If he thought country music and its listeners were such rednecks, WHY DID HE TAKE A JOB AT A COUNTRY STATION? Was he so desperate because no one else would hire him that he, in his opinion, “lowered” himself to take a job with a platform that he didn’t like? I’ve never met him but some of my friends have and they thought he was a really nice guy but if this is how he feels about country music, why does he still show up at Eastside Station in Snellville where they have a country platform played on Saturday nights? Apparently he’s one of those ignorant inbred idiots that listens to country music also. If Southside Z is not the actual Southside Steve, I apologize but if it is, you stink!!!!

Unbelievable. Listening to Caddy, Kristen and Jim in the morning on the way to work was a bright spot not to mention, after a bad day, having Wylie making everyone feel better on the ride home. KICKS brought a lot of laughs, happiness, a little sorrow at times, and most of all, pride in Atlanta. They will be sorely missed. Seemas like we went through this a while back with Moby in the morning. I guess a good thing is not worth keeping!

I was SHOCKED to hear they fired Rhubarb. When you think of all he has done for Atlanta and what a genuinely great person he is its horrible! And I always enjoy Steve Mitchell and Sandy Weaver. I didn’t want to listen to 94.9 because of what they did to Randy & Spiff and the choices keep getting smaller and smaller. Are all country radio stations run by idiots!?!?!!? Like Megan I want to know if they had any warning and why!?!

Well you guys really flub the dub on this one. I listened to Kicks years ago when Moby was on there. Once they fired Moby, I banned them and listened to Rhubabrb until I found Moby again. Then The Bull brought Cledus T Judd on air so I have listened to all three of them. Now Rhubarb has been canned, I will listen between Moby and Cledus, I love them both. Rhubarb was a great assett to 106.7 and I know the ratings will show it. If you bring Imus on air you should be beaten to a pulp. He is a old man with no life except to be a racist. I will no longer support Kicks or 106.7. You lost another listener. Good job!!!

This is so wierd. Just this morning in traffic I was commenting that I was beginning to enjoy the Eagle and I thought they had finally found just the right mix of new and old country without replaying the same songs every 3rd hour. The Bull really never has hit the mark and Cletus T Judd would make my head hurt after 30 minutes. I’ve always enjoyed Kicks and thought Eagle was a good compliment to their format. I guess all Atlanta needs is another obnoxious talk show host that thinks their crap don’t stink and anyone that disagrees with them is ignorant.
I wonder if this is how New York ran country stations out of town. New owner’s with no real concern of the loyal listener that probably hate country music anyway. I shouldn’t speak to soon, but I guess it is better to become attached to a lower budget station that falls under the big dog’s radar like the Fish and J93.

Wow! I couldn’t believe this when I saw it. The BULL hasn’t been able to get a bunch of traction in Atlanta, but what KICKS and EAGLE just did will open the door big time for them.
No matter what you may think of Kristen, the morning show is horrible without her - the interplay between the two of them makes the show most of the time.
I’m not so disappointed abotu Wylie and Scottie. I said that the BULL could give KICKS a run for its money in the afternoon and evening IF the BULL got decent on-air talent. They finally did that lately by doing the Cledus T-Party in the afternoon.
I hate it for Sandy Weaver, too. I thought KICKS made a mistake by letter her leave after the morning show fiasco a few years ago. I have missed her on KICKS.
It’s a sad, sad say for KICKS. They have really made a mistake.

Getting rid of Ruhbarb Jones is a mistake also. I loved the friendly rivalry between him and Kicks.

Saw it coming, but I’m still in shock as to why they would save Caddy, he is the most arrogant host I have heard in years, anybody who brags about having a “nanny” is a pile of crap in my book, take care of your own kids. Jim & Kristen made that show, It’s not like Caddy was better off by himself, because when he left afternoons, Wylie’s #’s did drop a bit, so in other words, it didnt matter who was in that slot, the #’s were there. Caddy by himelf will fail, he better get back to the afternoons where the #’s are a given.

The changes in staff and format is about the almighty dollar. It’s Atlanta radio..we have never had a radio station that matched up to other city’s stations. R. Jones, everybody’s friend, is the most boring and arrogant person I ever attempted to listen to. Good riddance! Moby is much more entertaining. I hope the station will consider oldies music as long as they frequently change the songs. How about a variety of different types of music??? Talk radio is appealing as well. It will be interesting what the new owners come up with…betcha it’s not going to any better than what we Atlanta listeners have had in the past.

This new company has made a big mistake and they will pay dearly for it. All these great radio personalties will end up somewhere else, maybe The Bull 94.9 and Eagle 106.7 will go under, Caddy and Dallas will make a good team!!! Good Luck to them working for the stupid idiots that have tool over!!!! Rhubarb and Mitchell, you are still my loves!!!!!!!

Agree with another poster that Cadillac had become a bit arrogant. The Nanny talk, the hundreds of dollars it cost to fill up those dealership provided vehicles he drives, a house in Cashiers … I can’t relate and I was getting a little weary hearing all of it. Also agree with another poster that the show was better when Cadillac was out … Will miss Kristen (a real and down to earth girl) and most especially Mr. Jim Vann. Wish them the absolute best! Hello, books on tape.

Rodney is that Steve Mitchell the same one that was at 96Rock a gazillion years ago with Kaedy and Mark McCain and Willard? it’s a fairly common name, so i wasn’t sure…. i haven’t listed to the Eagle so i didn’t know he was there, and now, of course, i can’t listen to see if it’s the same guy because “HE’s not there” (hmmmmm sounds like a good title for a song…)

This was all inevitable. Disney engorged what was once a great company, Capital Cities-ABC, over eleven years ago. They quickly destroyed what had been the Nation’s greatest commercial Radio operation on many internal and product-changing levels. Disney stepped over several “real” broadcasters such as Cox, Entercom and Emmis, to sell the now-rotting crop of stations (San Francisco’s KGO being the exception to the rule: #1 in every Ratings book since 1977!) to Citadel…whose big markets were Chattanooga, Birmingham and Oklahoma City, prior to the sale…Why? Any of the other previously mentioned outfits would’ve cleaned house from top to bottom….except in S.F., where Disney somehow left the 25-plus year Management team in place. Elsewhere, competent dedicated personnel were replaced primarily by ass-kissers who gave the top-level bloatees what they wanted to hear (and God knows what else). Disney knew they could keep pulling the strings as long as they wanted, as long as the “buyer” was Citadel; then of course the whole mess was rubber-stamped by the FCC & SEC. You other people in the “biz” know damn well it can all be laid at Disney’s corpse-strewn doorstep. And Karen, down here Santa leaves bags of Hickory Switches, not Coal! Have a Nice Day.

Well…Atlanta radio got better once 99Xcrement was flushed down the toilet for good and replaced with Rock 100.5…we’ve got gobs of country stations, so if we can nix the Eagle and put in an FM Talk station with TOM LEYKIS that would, like, totally rule and stuff. A 3rd Rock & Roll station would be cool too, but that’s probably unrealistic.

I just have to give my comments on this debacle! I was in broadcasting for 30 years and this is the biggest blow out I’ve ever heard of.
Wow, did you know broadcasting is the only career where people get fired for doing their jobs? That’s right. You get fired for being a team player, for doing the right thing, for agreeing to do all of the things dictated to you by the Program director and general manager.
Good people with families were fired today and those of you on the outside looking in, have no earthly idea how hard this is going to be for the families of those effected.
I can remember coming home to my nice 4500 square foot home on the river and telling my wife and two daughters that my three year contract at Z93 was not renewed. Not knowing what to tell the girls, and wondering how the hell we were going to survive and find another job (radio or otherwise) that I could make the kind of money I was making to support my family.
I guess my children suffered the most from me being out of a job. They were pretty damn popular in school until word got ‘round that their daddy wasn’t on the radio anymore. It was difficult for them and my heart hurt for those guys.
Here’s the other problem you face when you’re fired from a high profile career position. All those people in the subdivision that were supposedly your friends? NOT! Once you’re out of the limelight they sure as hell don’t want to be around you. It’s like all of a sudden you have cancer. Well, at least you find out who your friends are.
I’m really saddened to find that one of my best friends was caught up in this mess. Sandy Weaver. If you know her as a friend and her husband Bob as a friend then you know neither one deserved this. Sandy and I used to work together at ABC in Washington DC and have been friends since the early 80’s.
She’s been a great help to me during my weaning from broadcasting. We’ve even joked about the nature of the business and how it attracts communicators and then never communicates with any of them.
The last time my wife and I were out with Sandy and Bob, she asked if I’d ever get back into radio. I told her that I had had a couple of offers, but why would I want to go back into radio so that I could be fired for doing my job.
Life is so much better now in my new career. My career out of broadcasting where I actually get rewarded for doing a good job and actually get to keep my job as long as I’m doing what I’m supposed to. What a concept.
My heart hurts for all of those who got the axe today and I hope that in time you will grow stronger. I also hope that you will have the courage to turn your back on the business that turned its back on you and channel your communication skills in other directions where people will appreciate you.
God Bless!

First 96 rock, then 97.1, then 94.1, then 99x, then 100.5, then 101.5 and 106.7. What is left? I never really liked Atlanta radio for this reason. It cost money to have good people working for you. Every station plays the same music, the personalities are what keep people listing to a certain station. I think this is a big mistake. You cant expect me to believe that the salaries that were eliminated will be a savings compared to the salaries that still remain. I have been listening to WKHX since I returned to the Atlanta area in 1994 - 14 years! When Moby “left” I wondered what would change. We weathered that storm, and now this! There is NO better station (prior to today) than KICKS, with Caddy, Jim, Bill, and Wylie! Not to mention Buck - he’s a treasure in the promo area! What a shame that Citadel, or Disney/ABC, can make such monumental changes…… leaving all the loyal listeners stunned and lost! I can say the same about WYAY, even though it was my 2nd preset, behind WKHX. All these people have done what they were hired to do, and done it very, very well! It’s a tragedy for Atlanta and for country music fans in Georgia. Jim Vann, the next time you come up to see your mom, or go the the BBQ place (you know where I mean) let me know - I’d love to chat with you again! Buck — You know me — give me a call and let me know where you’re going from here. Maybe I can help you. Well, I guess that I will retreat to my CDs like so many others. But that will make it more difficult to keep up with the new talent from Nashville. Maybe I’ll just move to Nashville —- at least there, country music is a “religion” not just entertainment! I will miss you all terribly, and my “life” after 14 years will no longer be the same. Gee thanks, Citadel/Disney/ABC! NOT!

I am totally shocked! I love Caddy and all, but it won’t be right without Kristen and Jim. It really doesn’t effect me one way or the other about Rhubarb, but I still hate that this has happened to him, and the others at 106.7. Buck in the Truck was my ALL TIME favorite. He is such a nice guy and he is so much fun. I can’t understand what (if anything) these idiots were thinking.

Today was the worst leap day in my 46 years of life. Work finally ended and when heading home I heard part of a news cast saying Rhubarb had been fired. I truly thought my ears were playing tricks on me. My mind could not conceive the notion. So I came straight home and got on the computer to see if I’d been hearing things. Sadly I hadn’t been. I know we each have our favorites to listen to and sometimes we may wonder, but when I listened to Rhubarb is was like I was at home. Rhubarb’s southern charm, southern dialect, knowledge of the cities, counties and state locations, facts, memories as well as a love for the music and history, even going back to college … all of these plus more made Rhubarb the best country music DJ.
As usual it comes down to money!! That’s all corporations think of, how to save a dime. Citadel knows nothing of their listening audiences. I’m sure the decision was that of all big corporations; get rid of the veteran employees, one of their salaries can pay for two younger employees right out of college. Citadel, I hope your business decision back fires in your face, no…back fires in your wallet. Yeah two for the price of one saves the company money and has twice the amount of production. But in this case nothing can replace all the country music knowledge of those you fired today.

What a loss. Rhubarb was 106.7. The station was not as good when SS Steve was there and seemed to be headed downward, but had a chance to get back to “country great” with Rhubard and Dallas in that order. More Dallas and less Rhubarb just did not work. We all have favorites and choices and I will tune in to the first station that grabs Rhubarb and I am done with 106.7.

Hey Southside –

WKHX & WYAY fans: Have you thought this through enough to think about how this will affect the “big stars” coming to Atlanta? Without the 2 “big” stations, without the airwaves spinning the artist’s songs, without the promos about upcoming albums or news….. why would any of our favorite country artists want to come to Atlanta? You don’t just build a new “big” station overnight! WKHX & WYAY have been the promotion behind EVERY major concert in Atlanta for years! Why would they come here with no more “hype?” The answer is simple — without a MAJOR market here, the stars won’t come here either. Let’s watch to see who backs out of the already slated shows, or who just never comes here again? Let your station know how you feel! Go to the Site Map at the bottom of both home pages — send your comments TO the station, just so they know. WE, the fans/listeners, are the ones that REALLY lose out bigtime from this “money conglomerate” - not the stations. Think about your favorite artist, and imagine that you can no longer see them here in the Atlanta area. This is bigger than just your radio dial!

RADIO IN ATLANTA IS FINISHED!
Watch for more and more firings as advertisers are chased away by dwindling audiences and stations can’t afford to pay full-time people!
Blame the satellite snobs who want the world to exist around XM and Sirius, and don’t know ANYTHING about the city or state they live in. they don’t care about local programming or information.
This will get worse before it gets better, and ALL radio jobs will be part-time very soon.
Radio is only 10 years from being obsolete as the next generation gets its music from the web and other digital sources.
Radio’s only hope is PERSONALITIES, and a whole BUNCH of them have been fired this year.
If you’re in radio, the odds of getting a full-time job right now is virtually ZERO!

This is WRONG!! I grew up listening to Rhubarb. I love listening to him. Ever since they cut his hours, I have been listening to the Bull. But if I knew Rhubarb was on at the Eagle my radio was pointed there. Now I will only be listening to the Bull.
I don’t care if this is the way it happens in the radio business. It does not make it right. I will never listen to the Eagle again. It will be removed from the buttons.
I did listen to Kicks. Caddy is awesome and a really great guy to boot. I am glad he survived, however I can’t listen to a company that does crap like this to 2 awesome stations. Its bad enough that the former owners ran Moby off because he was to “country” as one DJ told me at Kicks.

When I was in college, I was an intern for a radio station in Annapolis, MD. Overnight, the owners pulled the trigger on a format change and the next morning each employee found the doors locked. Each employee’s possessions were boxed and labeled waiting for them on the sidewalk. I will never forget that and I knew then that radio was not for me. Come to think of it, it seems like more businesses have taken to locking the door and throwing people’s stuff into boxes these days!! Sad.

I loved Rhubarb and Dallas, but their music selections were most boring each morning - nothing but the current music stars and their music can’t compare to all the great songs of Country from past years. We listen to WAAZ/WJSB (Crestview and Fort Walton Beach, Florida) who have the greatest and widest variety of C&W music all day long. They play everything from the past all over the American C&W scene. We are part-time residents in the Destin area and that makes those stations possible. We want Atlanta to wake up to a station like that! All Atlanta C&W fans would enjoy that as much as a part-talk station.

What is wrong with the radio stations these days? It seems all they want are talk shows that are trashy and cheap, or they want some morning show with all young, hip people who have no respect for their listeners! I LOVED Cadillac, Kristen and Jim Vann in the morning. I have listened to them for years! And Wylie in the afternoon just made the ending of a work day so much better. I will be changing my settings on my radio now and I will be getting rid of Kicks and Eagle! How can a company just throw people out on their butt when our economy is the way it is…oh that’s right, because these days people don’t give a crap about each other. They just assume kick you out on your ass. What’s the old saying “Out with the old in with the new”. This new company made a BIG MISTAKE. I will truly miss all of you at Kicks 101! I have listened to them since I was a teenager and all I can say now is thank God for my CDS!

I am disgusting of the news on the ousting of these loyal, dedicated radio icons! What is happening to the radio business in Atlanta? You just axed some of the BEST personalities in Atlanta radio! Rhubard, Kristen, Steve, Wylie and JIM VANN you will be truly missed and THANK YOU for the memories! This is so hard to swallow. I guess it is finally time for satellite radio. Country radio will NEVER be the same! Citadel, just remember…What goes around, comes around….AND…. Karma is a b***!

Since us listeners don’t mean crap to the owners, let’s show the jocks and personalities how much THEY mean.
Jim & Rhubarb - go rent a hotel ballroom (yes Jim, you can be the bartender!), and invite everybody from Kicks & Eagle (Y106) who were just canned, and let us listeners pay $10.00 each just to party with you!
I’ll bet Travis Tritt and Danny Shirley would come, wouldn’t they?
It’s a tribute … a roast … a celebration of everything you’ve done well!

KRISTEN GATES?? I LOVED her bubbly personality; she & Cadillac had some awesome chemistry that will not be duplicated. Waking up in the morning will now be nothing but SAD SAD SAD! (THANKS, you “Powers that be”!) I truly believe that Kicks will never be the same…
RHUBARB?? RHUBARB?? OMG, he has been (and always WILL BE) the true voice of Atlanta Country Radio…Above all, SHAME ON Y’ALL for firing that man!

I have always liked 106.7FM. The majority of that was due to the wonderful people on the air. People like Rhubarb Jones; among others; made it wonderful for the family. When we took the kids to the events with a DJ present, it was fun too. The owners made a big mistake and I hope they survive. Corporate decisions have been known to be incorrect many times. God bless those families who have to start over due to a bad decision from some people with more money than sense. Those hard working people on the air made it sound like listeners were family.

Citadel did the same thing in Chicago today. Wiped out most of the news staff on WLS-AM. They are calling it a “Bloodbath” up there. Awful, lots of supremely talented folks out of work.
Nationwide, Citadel made some huge cuts today. Just makes me sick.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I loved Caddy and Kristin, and Wylie was my absolute favorite DJ! Jim Vann - what a guy. And Rhubarb? Please. He’s been an Atlanta fixture since before I was born. My radio presets will be quite empty now, gotta say. Atlanta is a pathetic place to live in now without Peach (or Lite, whatever, and I still don’t like listening to The Bull because of the overchange there), 99x and any of the good dj’s on Kicks and Eagle. RIP, Atlanta radio.

It is time to matters in your own hands. Call the main man at S** and tell him what you think about him killing your favorite Radio Stations and Personalities. Call Farid Suleman at his Las Vegas Office (702)804-5200 and his New York Office (212)887-1670. These people need to hear from you! I am shocked! Are these people crazy? It is ironic that just last Sunday, the President of the Georgia Recording Association or such was telling the bald gentleman on GPB (he interviews local corporate types on Sunday afternoons) that radio music is going to take a huge hit, thanks to IPods and such. In fact, he was saying that he personally listens to talk radio mainly. Wow! I am shocked. I can’t believe a southern market like Atlanta cannot have viable country channels. Wow! I will badly miss the Country Gold programs on Eagle, on Sunday evenings. That program used to be an excuse for me to take my car out for a drive on Sunday nights. I can’t believe this is true. i hope this is some sort of a Leap Year’s joke………..

This is Insane Is Citadel trying to put themselves out of business? We dont’ need to get rid of the ones that keep the radio stations alive, and that is exactly what it seems like they are doing. They should get rid of the people that lie to their listeners like Rob Lee they shouldn’t get rid of the ones like Rhubarb Jones. He was the only reason I still listened to Eagle but now that he is gone, I will listen to 92.5 out of Griffin or 96.7 The Legend who is the best source for oldies now. If Citadel wants a talk radio station, they should invest in an am station, not fm.

you know the ironic thing here- Farid Suleman, CEO of Citadel makes more money than the entire staffs of Kicks and the Eagle combined. Between his COO, CFO and all that corporate staff up in New York, what does the company need him for?
The board of Citadel should have fired him, and given everyone at the stations a raise and they’d still come out ahead.

The very first day I arrived in the Atlanta area I found 106.7 and Rhubarb Jones. I’ve listened to the station and especially Rhubarb ever since. I can’t imagine starting my day without his familiar voice and humor. Steve Mitchell doing the afternoon show was a stroke of genius. These are two super talented men and won’t be forgotten. I can’t imagine what the new owners (the Citadel ???) are thinking. I am so disappointed and if Rhubarb and Steve aren’t on the air very soon, I won’t be listening to radio AT ALL. I have lived in Atlanta most my life and yesterday was a complete travesty. I am shocked and disappointed. As mentioned in another post, The Bull just got a lot more popular. Sorry Caddy, I understand you must still make a living and support that wonderful family of yours but I can not support a company that would do what it did to it’s listeners that ultimately “pays thier bills” as well as treat the people in thier employment the way they did whether they have been there 22 years or just 1. Good luck to those who were wronged so unjustly yesterday. I am hoping to hear you guys again. I will tune it to whatever station that may be.

If anyone hears them on another station I would like to see it posted so I can find them. I am done with 101.5. What did management think about us the loyal listener when they did this? It just shows that we meant nothing at all. I am sure we will lose alot of the concerts that came to the Atlanta area since there will be no one to promote them. I am in total shock! I’ve listened to Rhubarb since his first day there…what a shame to do this to him and all the others! Why do folks mess with something that ISN’T BROKEN? What about all the charity work Rhubarb has done and all the money that has been raised over the years? Rhubarb is the nicest person you would ever want to know. I know him personaly and he is and always will be #1 in my book! I can’t even imagine how Dallas feels as she and Rhubarb are more than morning hosts they are great friends!
Shame on the people that did this to all of us….No matter what format you change 106.7 to I will NEVER listen again. Go back where ya came from….we don’t need your kind down here!

It was a great shock when I heard of the firings at 106.7 and 101.5. I have been a loyal listener for most of my life. I have listened to Rhubarb Jones for his entire time on 106.7. I have grown to known him personally in the last few years and there is no greater man out there that has the big heart he does. Mr. Charity, Mr Country both are great titles for him. 106.7 was the first set dail on my radio (NOTE:WAS)and 101.5 was the second (NOTE AGAIN:WAS). Now it is set to the BUll and 106.1. When Rhubarb gets a new home that station will be number one for me. I love country music and he is country music to me.
P.S. For all of you none country music listeners please stay on your side of the track and let us have our say about what is going on on our side of the trake. My neck may be RED, but my mama did teach me some manners.

Another tragic moment in Atlanta country music radio history. I vividly remember the bitter feelings I had when they did this to Moby several years ago. But, eventually, Caddy & Kristen filled the void left by Moby. And, now, here we go again. The dismissal of Jim Vann is UNFORGIVEABLE.
I say this with all seriousness - I would be willing to contribute a lot of money to a business venture that would involve the purchase of an FCC license that would grant us the rights to broadcast our own country music radio program that would hopefully employ ALL of Atlanta’s country music DJ’s and personalities we all have grown to love. Anyone interested?

this email I sent to the not so bright person that fired our beloved DJs
Firing some of Atlanta's most beloved radio personalities was not a very bright idea. We have grown up listening to these people. We have become friends and these people have become part of our families. Every day waking up to listen to music and also the people that play it. I suspect that my email is one of the many you will be receiving and I hope that this letter isn't just cast aside as you have cast aside people we love. Kicks and Eagle have been a mainstay in the country music listening community in Atlanta for as long as I can recall. My family moved to Atlanta in 1981 and I grew up listening to both of these stations. Family functions suck as a Fourth of July picnic in Lawrenceville, Ga where the radio stations always played the music at the courthouse. Rhubarb was there always. He also made appearances around my county when we asked him. Jim Vann in the morning reading the news always made bad news sound better because it was coming from someone that we trusted. Also sharing personal views that were much like ours. You have not only taken away people that we love you have also proved that corporations only care about the bottom line MONEY. I hope that you have found people that can love and care as these people have to be replace them on our radios. We not only love our country in Atlanta we also love the people who play it for us. I hope as well that it is just a rumor that you are bringing Don Imus to Atlanta. There may be country people here but we don't tolerate ignorance. Have a wonderful day thank you for your time.By Fred

Thanks, for the follow-up information. we will all miss Rubarb, he has been such a soothing, and unique personality in Atlanta. And yes, he truly is a Gentleman. I hope he lands somewhere here in Atlanta, and I guess cost cutting may be necessary, but corporations seem to cut off the Golden Goose, due to salary or whatever reason they can justify. Just to lose the customer/listener base they need so dearly. Well, ultimately things will go well for Rubarb, and the others. Good Luck to them, and keep us advised. thanks again for letting me vent. Fred p.s. for Imus, he should just retire.

It looks like it’s 94.9 for me. I’ve fallen for Jamie Massey. hopefully rhubarb,Steve Mitchell and Jim Van will turn up eventually.

Bad day for both Atlanta radio and for country music here in Atlanta. But placing the blame on Citadel is wrongm It is the lame station management that deserves all your anger. The former station manager, who just skated out of town in the nick of time, has been MIA for the past two years as these station have been sliding downhill. The current batch of managers couldn’t manage a Wendy’s, let alone a radio station. When the Bull came to town they were all stuck like a deer in the headlights and couldn’t think of one proactive thing to do in order to compete. The two “sales” managers couldn’t close a barn door and spend the majority of their time sitting on their keisters in their offices and sweating their declining revenues. The programming director hasn’t had a winning concept since he’s been there. Their promotions department would rather find excuses for not venturing outside their bunker and could never extend themselves to work 1 minute past quitting time. This is one of the worst managed stations in radio.
Blame Citadel? Nah, not after announcing an $848 MILLION loss in the last quarter. This isn’t greed folks, this is survival! Hopefully, the idiots — like Mack, a man who can’t manage inventoryto save his life — will get the ax soon so the station can start to rebuild. No, it’s not corporate greed that I blame, it’s the lame management that caused this to happen.

This is WRONG! I have an issue with this station I have been listening to KICKS for 10 years, and i was so mad whenthey did this to Moby, and they even madder as they kept swicthing DJS, I was finally happy with the mix and now they wipe out EVERYONE??? What the hell are they thinking. Poor Jim, and wylie, and Buck, this was just seriously the wrong thing to do. I am now looking for a new station I have had enough. And it sure won’t be a station they own.

I dont only know Rhubarb from the radio for the last 20 some years, but I also know him personally. He is a wonderful, sweet, generous man who gives so much of himself for the things that he believes in. He is truly an awesome person and will be sooo missed on the air.
I know this is God’s way of directing him into a different path in is life now, I pray for him and his family and I know God will keep him under his wings and bless him in anything he does with his life.

Whomever is responsible sould rethink what they have done. I agree with eveyone about Rhubarb he is an icon in Atlanta. I listen more to Kicks and I can’t believe they let all the good ones go. I would just like to know what they were thinking or were they even thinking. I can’t believe Kristen is gone or Jum Vann and espically Wylie. Hopefully if they get enough complaints they will change their minds. I just know it was a BAD DECISION whomever made it so please fix it all of it.

I feel bad for every non-profit organization that Rhubarb Jones helps. Each day he’s off the air, fewer needy people will benefit in some way. The guy has one of the biggest hearts of any celebrity in Georgia and has helped thousands over the years. He’s a living radio legend and I sure hope he’s back on the air somewhere soon.

The problem is not with the local radio management, they didn’t make the decision to fire all these people. That decision was made by the Corporate big-wigs that have no clue or care what the people in Atlanta want or think. They were only looking at figures on a budget sheet & the people affected weren’t a consideration. Thats the big problem with the changes in the law that allow one company to own HUNDREDS of radio stations, they have no personal connection to the communities these stations cover, so it’s easy for them to ax personalities, morning-teams, or even the entire format of the station with no thought to what the PUBLIC will feel!
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 needs to be repealed or fixed to change the mass station ownership rules!!! The public will NEVER have the solid long-term relationship with stations that we deserve unless this is changed!!

Cheryl: Sorry to disappoint you, but “Karma” doesn’t extend down to personal levels in Radio. The worst of the worst in “Management” are continually rewarded for their bad decisions, while the backbone-longterm workers both on and off air are screwed. Radio “karma” is only seen in the way Disney poison first killed ABC, then leaked down into the Citadel transaction. Jeez, hasn’t Jim Vann been there since the WBIE days??

Rhubard, Please make sure we all know where you end up. You WERE the station…and the only reason I listened. “That’s the radio business” is not a good reason nor explanation for doing something so sudden and devestating to so many people. It would seem some owner needs a little more money for himself. In the end, I think they will have found they have shot themselves in the foot. I can promise you you cannot be replaced - especially by Imus of all people. Rest assured, when you only think of yourself, in the end, that’s all you have. I am told often that the things that happen to us in life all are all part of His master plan for us and they all come together in the end to reveal the purpose God has for our lives - if we trust, listen and follow him and don’t question and doubt. So, as I say to myself every time I hit a wall - wow…this is going to lead to something really wonderful! So, Rhubarb - and all the rest who lost their jobs - keep looking up. God has something wondrful waiting for you! God Bless and keep you all…

Don’t look now, but MUSIC RADIO IS ON LIFE SUPPORT … and the end is nigh!
Everybody under 30 gets their music from iPods or downloads, and everybody over 30 who cares about current affairs is listening to talk radio.
Thus, ratings are dropping … advertising dollars are dwindling … management is panicking … and anybody in radio who makes over $50K needs to update their resumes.
Friends don’t let friends go to Broadcasting School or get into radio!
I’ll never go to another school and tell kids how wonderful radio is … I’ll be more like Dilbert describing office environments to the kids!
I wish Rhuby, Jim, Wylie and the rest very good luck in their next careers, and my condolences to the survivors (Bill, Dallas/Madison, Caddy & Greg!), for whom the torture is just extended!
Citadel executives have finally out-ClearChanneled Clear Channel … a dubious accomplishment!

Well after the race next Sunday, there will be no more Eagle. Well as for me after yesterday there was no Eagle. I have heard that Dallas will be going to Kicks after then too. How can she do that. I wonder what will she say Monday morning.. My heart is braking for part of my family—The Eagle family that we all just lost. y106.7 has been a part of my everyday life since 1984 as long as I have been married, and ever since I had my daughter. I will so miss hearing my buddy Rhubarb, it has never really mattered who was on the air with him, he made them sound good. Remember the Zoo Crew, what a group.. I have alot of pictures of Rhubarb over the years, him playing his drums and always that huge smile and a HEART as big as the earth. I know GOD will be watching over him and his family, because Rhubarb is one of GOD’s angels on earth. He is so good, I guess he scared those stuff shirt pencil pushers who only care about numbers and money, where Rhubarb cared about the money going to help others in need and for research so maybe one day we will never have cancer and so our children will forever all be healthy.. I have cried alot of tears for my lost, but for Rhubarb and the other wonderful radio people that all lost there jobs, and for the charities that this is gonna hurt. But no matter what I think Rhubarb will find a way to still help and I pray he will find a way to let all of us know how we can help him. Where ever he may go I will do whatever I need to do to listen to him. I sure hope all of his country music artist friends finds out what has happened and really socks it to those awful people at the Citidal Corp. PLease lets all pray for the perfect radio station to come along so all of our FAMILY members can come together once again and have the best country radio station Atlanta has ever saw.. Rhubarb, Sandy, Steve and al the rest from kicks, we love you and will be praying for you and saying a little extra prayer to be listening to you all real soon.. And Dallas and Cadilac watch your backs you may be next……

I realize that radio is nothing more than a “business”. But what a shame to let such great personality go! I’m sure it wasn’t an easy task for management. Caddy and Kristen made a GREAT pair and we loved every minute of listening to them! They were funny and real together. We will really miss them and hope that they resurface as a “pair” soon! As far as The Eagle…I think Citadel is making a big mistake by flipping formats! Eagle is unique in the fact that they don’t hammer out the same “top 40” all day long. It was great to hear some 80’s and 90’s songs mixed in! Again…business is business….but PLEASE don’t change Kicks too! If only “corporate” radio people would take more advice from the listeners, I think we’d have a better radio landscape. Just my two-cents.

It was great to hear some 80’s and 90’s songs mixed in! Again…business is business….but PLEASE don’t change Kicks too! If only “corporate” radio people would take more advice from the listeners, I think we’d have a better radio landscape. Just my two-cents.

My dad taught Rhubard Jones in High School. To echo your comments, Rhubard Jones is a CLASS ACT with a heart as big as the world and a talent that is rare these days. The station messed up with this move, but like they say, “Everything happens for a reason” and I’m confident bigger and BETTER things are in store for Rubarb Jones! - V. McLain, Haralson County, GA

I always liked Rhubarb but with The Regular Guys back on the air I don’t listen to any other morning show but theirs so it really doesn’t matter what they do with their morning shows on the other station, most of Atlanta will be tuned to 100.5

Kristin and Jim both gone? No Way! What in the world were they thinking. I love Caddy, don’t get me wrong, I just can’t imagine my mornings with the three of them. 101.5 FM will never be the same and I am sure they will loose listeners and it won’t be a reflection on Caddy.

WOW! I knew something was wrong when I didn’t get a return email back. As good a person as Rhubarb is, I am sure he will be picked up by another station very soon! He is one of my favorites and has been for quite a while. I wish him all the luck in the world, and I know he will be just fine! When one door closes, God always opens a window!

Very sad event for Atlanta. Been listening to Y 106.7 / Rhubarb every morning since I moved to Atlanta from CA. Did not matter if I had business associates, the APHA Youth, or my children in the car, we listened to Y 106.7.
Instead of drastic cuts, did the station considered new revenue avenues such as TAP IT or other artist genres for increased advertising and listeners?
I, too, will remove Y106.7 from my presets. We do not need another talk show in Atlanta. Atlanta will see the negative impact from the loss of Rhubarb “Mr. Charity”.

Wow, Monday is sure going to be boring without all of these guys. I visited the Citadel Broadcasting site and noticed that Victor Sansone is the contact for the Atlanta market. (victor.sansone@citcomm.com) Not sure if it will do any good, but maybe if they get a lot of negative mail, they will see what a mistake they have made by making such a drastic move.

Monday morning comes, and I will too miss the line-up at KICKS. It’s become a normal thing in Atlanta Radio for the shows to change every year or two. KICKS has been the same for years.
I do know that I have alot of choices to spin the radio wheel. If radio execs think that I will ever again be loyal to a radio station, maybe they should think about being loyal to their listeners.

This is so sad….radio will never be the same. I will miss hearing Jim’s voice every morning. No more hearing Kristen gripe about being on a diet. Wylie Rose was great too……and if they make 106.7 a talk station that will be horrible. Country music is great and Kicks 101.5 and Eagle 106.7 are the two best stations we have. If they really are having a budget problem then maybe they should get rid of Super tanker, cause that is still going on. CITADEL SUCKS!! Lets kick them to the curb and see how they like it. I want my regular radio people back!!

How could you get rid of such great people? Kristen Gates, Jim Van, Whylie Rose, ect. I grew up listening to Kicks and Y106. I would like to see the ones that were fired, start their own radio station. I bet they would be a hit. What happens to Nascar on 106.

I have listened to Eagle for almost 30 years (since before it was Eagle)and my daughter has never known anything else. She grew up listening to Rhubarb. I have met him on numerous occasions, usually on his March across Georgia for Leukemia and Lymphoma which he did ON HIS ON TIME. I am sure the decision was based on $$$$$. To an accountant the best way to cut cost is to get rid of the highest paid employees. Sort of like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Our family has cancelled our Loyal Listeners memberships. We tried to send e-mail to Eagle thru there “Contact Us” link on the website but it came back as “undeliverable” so either they turned it off or it is full. We are now BULL listeners. Good Luck to Rhubarb and all the others.

I can not believe that the big wigs are so out of touch with the listeners! How can you ditch a morning show team like Cadi and Kristen & Jim Vann?!?! & Wylie Rose in the afternoon?!? I have been a listener on KICKS for over 15 years and it seemed that everything was coming into a wonderful groove- and now the whole thing has been snatched away.
I am looking right now to write a letter to the parent company and let them know what a dumb move they made.

A wise gentleman posted earlier how dumb some people are for jumping to bull after this because they are owned by clear channel. I have to add, that it really ticks me off to see others jump to xm or sirius. Xm and sirius are two of the biggest reasons why you are saying goodbye to the voices that you’ve loved for years. The other reason is these big corporations with no local ties buying out local stations and picking them apart. Kicks and Eagle both had better ratings than the bull last quarter so do not think that it was due to ratings. If you go to xm or sirius expect to hear nothing but commercials in between songs before too long. You don’t remember when cable tv duped us all? If you really want to beat these big companies and get your people back, support local country radio stations outside of the Atlanta Market.

People like you bad mouthing Rhubarb Jones might as well be employed by Citadel Broadcasting, because in my book you ain’t no better than they are. Now lets talk about A CLASS ACT… that is Cledus T. Judd. He was so nice and supportive this morning about all the people that lost there jobs, but he really gave a heart felt speach about Rhubarb. I could see Rhubarb and Cledus together. I listened to all 4 statons this morning, switching every minute, I wanted to see if Dallas or Caddie would say any thing but I didn’t hear nothing from them, only Cledus. I can’t even fathem what “Citadel” is thinking. Taking the most talented group of people off the air at Kicks and Eagle. If they think bringing Imus, or whatever his name is, is a good idea, well they have another think coming! It sounds like to me that someone at Citadel is just trying to justify and save their own job! All the BIG WIGS need to start thinking about the fans and not just padding their own backside.

I was the first afternoon drive jock on Kicks in 1982. Capital Cities owned it then; it would later merge with ABC. I had a great time in Atlanta and thought, at the time, it was still a good radio market. Sadly; it appears Atlanta has joined the money fray. Lots of good people on the street. Is salary parity more important than ratings and revenue? Best of luck to all who got it last Friday. Having been through a couple of firings en masse; you have my deepest sympathy.

I learned today that Kristen Gates, Jim and Wylie have been laid off. I am totally shocked and very disappointed in WKHX. I have been an avid and LOYAL listener for years and was so excited when Kristen and Caddy were hosting the morning show. It was a great show and very lively and entertaining. They worked very well together on the air. Kristen was a home town girl and brought a lot to the show. Country music was/is her passion and that was very evident. Jim was WKXH history (nothing else needs to be said). And Wylie was fun in the afternoon on my way home – her God Winks – were a favorite part of my afternoon. I understand that Caddy & Bill Cellar will still be there and I hope they do well. As for me and my family – we will not be tuning in anymore.

Sari Rose who is fairly new to KICKS (been filling in for all the axed good guys) is from the 92.1 WBTR Carrollton station. I listen to the Carrollton station and don’t listen to KICKS anymore. Maybe she should have stayed in C’ton. I do like me some CLEDUS too!!! He has been very nice to invite Mr. Jones to the show- have any other DJs done that…ever?? Cledus and the party have a listener in me.

Keeping with his classy nature, Rhubarb will still be appearing at the American Diabetes Association’s Ride To Live charity motorcycle ride on May 10th.
We can’t wait to see him there.

UNBELIEVABLE!! Kristen and Jim Vann?? Sorry Caddy - but you’re not whole without those 2! I will NO longer be listening to Kicks and I think everyone should contact the companies that advertise on the station and ask them to pull their money from the station - so many listeners will no longer be listening anyway!! Kristen, Jim and Wylie need to start web pages so we can follow them to their new jobs. Kicks isn’t worthy!

I am totally disgusted by the Citadel corp. for destroying the two major radio stations in Atlanta. I am switching to the Bull if they don’t bring Kristen and Jim Vann back. What about Wylie and Steve and Scotty??? Rhubarb? Unbelievable!!! KICKS has set up a comment line (770-563-8523). Please call and voice your opinions!

I was shocked when I heard the news regarding Kristen, Jim, and Wylie, and very upset. They are what I looked forward to every morning on my way in to work, and home in the afternoon. What are they thinking???I love Caddy, but the 3 of them made a great team. I’m thinking…94.9 the Bull. If they can make changes, so can I…..God bless Kristen, Jim, and Wylie-

Kristen and Jim were the only reasons I listened in the mornings. While my XM is great for afternoons, I like a morning show to keep up with traffic, news, and the screachy, screachy. Obviously the radio station did not consult the listeners when determining who to downsize!

What a shame that a corporation has the power to destoy the lives of others. Not only did Citadel destroy the lives of all who were terminated, they also destoyed the Atlanta radio market. They can sit in their big expensive offices all day and pat each other on the back for the injustice they did and tell the listeners it was due to ratings, but we, the listeners find that is just alot of bull——. If cost was the reason and the almighty $$$ was the actual cause, just be honest and tell it, no need to lie about it. I honestly feel that had they approached the people who were fired, they would have been able to work out a solution on a salary cut. I think all would have agreed to it in order to keep their jobs and remain on the air, and be the professionals that they are. In an earlier post, someone made a comment about the Morning Zoo Crew (106.7) in its early years. Yes, I do remember the show with Rhubard, Conner, BJ and Steve Mitchell. What a delight to start your day. For over 22 years, Rhubard and his morning show has gotten me to work and Steve got me home after he moved to the afternoon slot. I can even tell you what song was played after the announcement that the Challenger had exploded and Rhubard’s heartfelt apology on air. I hope the higher ups has the guts to read all the comments and face up to what they did and amke ammends not only to the employees it so greatly disrespected, but to all the many, many listeners. However, they will most likely want to read the comments beacusae then they will know the fans speak the truth, which is someting they probably know nothing about. A comment to Southside Z: Your comments are not welcome or wanted, so go suck an onion. They need to be improved if you want people to believe that a human being wrote them and not a dumb jacka—.
To Rhubard, Steve, Sandy and the others: Rememeber God is in control and he never makes mistakes, only ignorant idiots do.
I am on my way to 94.9!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a bunch of jerks has done to the Atlanta radio market is beyond unbeliveable. They all need to have their heads examined. The Eagle and Kicks were like family to many Atlanta listeners. You can not do wrong and expect to get away with it forever and believe me, Citadel’s day is coming and it will be compounded ten times over. I can’t wait for that to happen. The CEO will pay in more pays than one for his decision. I will switch my dials to another station and will never give my support to some bird brain idiot who doesn’t know his a— from a hole in the ground!!!!

I just found out about Rhubarb, Steve and others at The Eagle and as far as I’m concerned, the Eagle has made a nose dive and as soon as I find out which stations they go with, my radio will follow them. Until then, I’ll be listening to CD’s!!!!!!!!I hope everyone starts complaining and switching stations and the Eagle gets shot out of the broadcasting business. Dallas, look out, you’ll be next!! Shame, shame on the culprits that tore apart one of the best radio personality families in Atlanta…..

Rhubarb’s been a friend of mine for years. I’m just shocked. He has the biggest heart of any radio personality ever. My heart goes out to Rhubarb, Donna and babies but this just means there’s something bigger and better waiting for you! AND Jim “Bubba” Vann, come on now. When I bought my car I purposely did not get XM because I enjoyed listening to Kicks. I am going shopping tomorrow for a new system. Atlanta radio offers nothing now. Kristen Gates is awesome! I took my cheerleaders to the station last year and she ,Caddie and Jim could not have been warmer or more hospitable. I pay monthly to St. Jude now thanks to Wylie, I kept telling myself I couldn’t afford to give to yet another charity every month but her emotional coverage changed my mind, she was so sincere. Hope Citadel has other interests to make money, because they certainly have ruined the market here in Atlanta. They won’t have my support! Best wishes for all of those who were dismissed, you left behind a very loving following of listeners. Take care and we hope to hear you soon on another station!!

Rhubarb, You have always been my fav in the radio limelight. I never cared too much for Dallas after she came to mornings..Felt she took too much from you. But hang in there. there will be others that will pick you up. I’ll keep and eye on your web site. Please post it there when you get to another station. I refuse to listen to Cad and Dallas. Those radio owners can keep ‘em. They all deserve each other or they would be with you. Nothing like close friends that take raises and leave you in the cold. Hmmmm…guess they needed the “younger guys to draw the younger crowd” Well hoop rah to them…Guess they haven’t heard that crap doesn’t work…. Remember we’re YOUR fans, and we’re behind you all the way, not the radio stations fans. Doesn’t matter where we hear you from as long as we hear you… Good luck, My prayers are with you.

I can’t believe what they’ve done to Kicks and Eagle. The bull ought to take Kristin and Jim Vann.. Cletus is fine but the other 2 aren’t country.. not even close, they throw the whole show off. I knew something was up, but was dumb-founded when I heard that everyone was shafted (except for Caddy, Dallas, and Bill; love them, but it’s not the same). I was angry when Moby was let go, but continued to listen (cause I didn’t know where he went and Jim Vann was still there) to see if Kicks could come close to what they had had. When finally Caddy and Kristen joined Jim on the Morning Krew, I knew Kicks had made it. They made my morning commute so much better (I have never laughed so hard in my life and even cried a little), Wylie made waiting in carpool line for my daughter so much easier as well. I loved listening to her stories about her kids. I truly enjoyed listening to these stations (106.7 also) because the DJs cared so much for their listeners. I hope Citadel does a complete nose-dive because they have just lost this loyal listener for good; I am switching to the Bull. Best wishes to Jim, Kristen, Wylie, Scotty, Buck, Rhubarb and all the others; you deserve better than this and you are lovd by this listener. Good bye Kicks and Eagle and good riddance (Caddy, Dallas and Bill I’m sorry).

It’s a real shame to see good people lose their jobs this way. Not to mention the loss af a great radio station. I will definitely miss the Eagle and their energetic on air personalities. Maybe we will get lucky and some of the more undesireable music on the Atlanta airwaves such as, hip-hop, rap, or whatever that crap is will meet the same fate as our beloved Eagle. Until then we can only hope.

I honestly cannot believe what a cut throat business radio is. First it was Moby, I loved him and couldn’t believe Kicks let him go. Then I used to listen to Kimmer on AM in the afternoons, ….was totally sick when they let him go, what a guy! Really got into Caddy and Kristen and thought they were a great team, very funny! Wylie Rose in the afternoons was about the only DJ in town that would actually answer the phone and talk to the listener. I also loved Rhubarb. What are these corporate idiots thinking? People depend on actual “personalities” to listen to, makes drive time easier. Everybody “had” their favorite station, but not anymore I guess. We don’t like automated continous commercials! Doesn’t actual listeners make a station? Shouldn’t we have a voice? Why don’t we get Garth Brooks to buy these stations and run them like they need to be ran? Country Country Country!!!
Very Sad Susan

The Eagle is gone and i feel like I have lost part of my family. It has been the “default” radio station in my car since 2000. The crew there was incredible and it always appeared they were having fun doing what they were doing so we listeners shared in that, too. Rhubarb Jones is the the biggest “class act” in Atlanta media and one of the most generous and thoughtful people anywhere. To go from Rhubarb and Dallas most mornings to hearing Imus when I tuned in this morning made me literally ill.
To the former Eagle 106.7 crew, thank you every one for some great years of entertainment and for being a consistently positive influence. What happened “just ain’t right” for you or the listeners. I wish you all the best and hope to hear from you all again soon on Atlanta radio!

So sad! Very disappointed to lose Kristin, Jim and Wylie. I have XM but chose to listen to them instead. They should have respected staff and viewers enough to allow a goodbye. The station should have been open about what they were doing and at least posted a letter to the viewer on their website explaining. I will continue to look for management talking to the viewers. I first heard Rhubarb when I went to Auburn (way back when) and loved him, even attended a concert and rode the bus with Rhubarb what a class act!!! Sirus radio here I come because who knows how much longer Dallas and Caddy will last!!
Thank you Eagle for all the good times!
What happens to NASCAR on Sunday’s? You know the people who listen to oldies will not like listening to racing!!! But I guess no one really cares! I own a business and yes you have to worry about the bottom line but were they really or just not making enough for themselves?

Whoever decided this truly doesn’t have a clue about his audience. We love Rhubarb and have for years - we are his local listeners. I knew one day he would leave radio, with his talk of possbily teaching - but, for the entire station to change to oldies music? What were they thinking? Nothing on the brain and a lot on their minds, I believe….Rhubarb, wherever you are, we love you! If you stay in radio, please let us know where you are - mornings will never be the same. Southside z (see his post above) if you are southside steve you are a P!!!K After Citadel bought Eagle and hire you that was the begining of the end for the Eagle. I heard you bad mouth the regular guys and how they treated you before you left them the first time. There is something wrong with a grown man dating teenagers. I bet yer maw is proud of you.

Eagle 106.7 Where are your Loyal Listeners now? I know where at lest 4 of them are!!!! Not listening to you anymore. Why would you think we would want to trade Jones for Imus? As far as keeping the nascar races, forget it. I will either watch them on tv or just wait to get the highlights on ESPN. Who every made this decision needs to get the head out of their __ and see what the people want. All these people who were released need to start their own station and work together to put 106.7 out of business.

What the heck happened to everyone??? I turned on Kicks Monday morning to Cadillac & DALLAS?????? What the…..? I used to listen to Dallas on Eagle and I like her fine, but I miss Kristen’s giggle and banter with Caddy. I know business is business, but as a listener I am ticked!!! Too bad these large conglomerates that own most of the radio stations now don’t listen to their listeners!!!!!! I am very sad… Karen Needle East Cobb

I’m sorry to see Eagle 106.7 loose so many good people. I loved to listen to the morning show with Rhubarb Jones, Dallas McCade, & Jim Vann. I have listened to this show since moving to the Atlanta area over 20 years ago. They will be MISSED!! I won’t be listening to 106.7 any longer!! I’m sure you will be loosing a lot more loyal listeners. Where ever Rhubarb ends up, I’ll be listening. In the meantime, I guess I’ll listen to what’s left of Kicks 101.5 with Cadillac Jack.

I am still at a loss. I feel as if I have lost a dear friend. I have been listening to Rhubard Jones for a very long time. I’ve been involved (as many, many people in Atlanta have) in his life, personal and professional. There is a hole in my heart that can’t be filled until there is a spot made for him in Atlanta radio. I won’t be satisfied until that happens. I have been really upset by the comments made by Southside Steve. He was a joke in my opinion the whole time he was on eagle. He made fun of family life and morality in general. I knew there were times that he embarrassed Rhubard, he would laugh, but you could tell it bothered him. I will never listen to Southside again, no matter where he shows up. I would never have listened to him in the first place except for the fact he was on with Rhubard. (God go with you Rhubarb)

I had been out of town for awhile, and I drove back in this morning, hit the preset button for Eagle 106.7, and find an oldies station. I thought something was wrong with my preset button…nope. I had to go online to find out that someone had lost their mind!!! I can’t believe that Rhubarb was fired! I have been listening to the Eagle since I moved to the Atlanta area in ‘95. Rhubarb’s and eventually the addition of Dallas to the morning show is what kept me sane in the crazy Atlanta traffic. I love all types of music, but loved Eagle’s morning show the best. I guess my radio will now be tuned to Project 96.1 —- at least until I find out where Rhubarb will end up. Good luck Rhubarb!!! We will be waiting for you…

this was my # 1 country station, primarily because of rhuby and dallas. now i’ve got to reprogram my radios in my cars, and wait to hear where the two brightest jewels of country music radio begin their new shine. 1067 really made a huge mistake.we’re praying for you all who lost your jobs.

I will never listen to Kicks 101.5 again after this insanity. What were they thinking? When you have two people who mesh like Cadillac and Kristen (and Jim), you just don’t go messing with something that isn’t broken. Too bad, and sad, for those who were fired with no warning. They have families. Does anyone ever think of that?!!! Especially with our economy the way it is today. I think Kicks will go downhill now (and it should!).

No more Eagle…? What’s there to listen to? If you switch to Kicks, you’re agreeing with the actions of management. I’m thinking that the “IPod” idea is the way to go.

I listened to the Eagle long before it was called the eagle, and also for many years before Rhubarb even arrived in Atlanta more than 20 years ago. I love my country music, and 106.7 was the best station in Atlanta to find it. Rhubarb and his cohorts made my mornings enjoyable. They were entertaining and informative, and also did wonderful things in the Atlanta and surrounding communities for a lot of years. I don’t know what the station management was thinking by not only firing these wonderful people, but also changing the station from country to “true oldies”. That is really a big joke because there is nothing “true” about the old music they play; the songs are not even done by the original artists; and Imus - he’s the biggest joke of all. The station owners are going to find that they have lost so many listeners, and probably a lot of revenue because of it, that if they don’t fix the mess they created soon, they too may soon be looking for a job. Atlanta misses and needs Rhubarb and I for one will be listening in the future to whichever station is lucky enough to hire him.

I can’t believe they fired Jim Vann. I’m done with Kicks for good now. It doesn’t matter how good Caddy and Dallas are … it’s an ethics thing. Jim was the heart of the show. I never liked Kristen and thought they made mistake keeping her over Jill in the first place. But firing Jim Vann is unforgivable.

I couldn’t figure out where my Rhubard was until a friend told me 106.7 was now oldies. What!! I loved Randy & Spiff, oldies from awhile back and it was hard to lose them. But come on, Rhubard! Now that’s just insane! What a dumb idea and THEY were a fixture of Atlanta and country music!

This has to be a joke! While I like Cadillac Jack, they made the wrong choice. Kristen MADE the morning show. She was the humor of the show and was always happy. Her giggle could put a smile on anyone’s face early in the morning. You could always count on sweet Jim Vann to say the right thing to make you think about life! Kristen will be severly missed! Looks like I’m making the switch back to Star 94, Country has gone crazy! Good luck Cadillac and Dallas….you are going to need it!

Rhubarb will be very much missed by me. He was my introduction to country music and great conversation and laughter on radio. May God bless you, Rhubarb and where ever you go I know it will be better. I don’t know how I will find where he goes, but I sure will NOT be listening to Eagle or Kicks. You have lost at least two loyal listeners and it sounds like many more.

Friday, march 14 on Kicks 101.5 on the morning show with Dallas and Caddy they are gonna have Rhubarb on it. I am not sure what time. They said Rhubarb has a story to tell and everyone needs to listen. Also, on his web page it says “Statement coming soon”. I know I just can’t wait to once again to hear my hero… Rhubarb Jones on the air. He is a hero to everyone who has ever met him for all he does and all his charity work.. God Bless Rhubarb Jones !!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE MISS YOU SO MUCH, MY MORNINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME UNTIL YOU COME BACK ON THE AIR..

I have known Cadiallac Jack all of my life and he ia a amazing D.J. He is also a good friend. I hate that rhubarb is gone, that is a big mistake for the radio station. I have been listening to Jim Van for so long, he added alot to the show. He will be missed so much. I think these are all bad decisions that were made and will be reflected as listeners are lost to other stations. Kim Miller

What a sad day for Atlanta. I am so tired of big businesses cutting cost this way. In my opinion, taking the brightest talent out of radio industry is detramental to the company. Kristen, Jim Van and others at Kicks will be missed. Maybe these high paid executives should have looked at cutting some of thier salaries before letting the “bread and butter” of Kicks radio go. To the Executives of Kicks/Eagle: what a cowardly way to cut cost…executives, secretaries and IT people should have gone….not the talent. The talent is what got listeners out to events, not the secretaries. I guess I will be listening to AM talk radio on the way to work from now on.

WHAT?? HAVE YOU GONE CRAZY?
I had the 7:00AM news on the other day and heard the new “news format”. Couldn’t believe it. Even though I like the oldies, I will not listen to the “Crummy Reporting A Playing” on this station. 106.7 will not be on my radio’s preset lineup.
Rhubarb and Dallas was a good start to my day. Always interesting and upbeat. The special features they had on were entertaining.
Rhubarb will be greatly missed. I just hope his next gig is in our local listening area. He will steal any listeners the new station has left.
The many charities he has helped by being the radio personality he is will also suffer.
The following is from Rhubarb’s website of the things he has achieved.

I think what you did to Rhubarb, Dallas and the others at eagle 106.7 was cruel. They were the best in Atl. The last 2 wks I thought maybe they were on vacation and would be back, so I kept putting up with Imus which I can’t cope with so as far as I am concerned it’s goodby to your station. There is 94.9 so thats where I’ll go or else kicks & join Dallas. I hope others do the same and then you will be cutting corners, you won’t have any left to listen to you.

Money is not everything! One day big business is going to have to find a soul again. Rhubarb Jones does more for the world of Country Music than anyone eles involved with it. He doesn’t talk the talk, he walks the walk. Personally I will NEVER listen to a station owed by Citadel again. I hope that company goes “belly-up”!
