3/9: Eagle’s switchover to True Oldies. First song: “Revolution.”

Naturally, Citadel did a minimalistic switchover from Eagle 106.7 (WYAY-FM) to True Oldies 106.7 at about 7 p.m. tonight after the NASCAR race. There was no acknowledgement of the fine 24 years of Y106/Eagle history since there wasn’t anybody left to do it. Very dismally corporate of Citadel, which has only owned the station for less than a year.

beatles.jpg

Citadel, as noted, is using a satellite turnkey playlist. The first song was “Revolution” by the Beatles, followed the first hour by “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5, “My Boyfriend’s Back” by the Angels, “Black Water” by the Doobie Brothers, “Bend Me, Shape Me,” by The American Breed, “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, “Come a Little Bit Closer” by Jay & the Americans, “Get Together” by the Youngbloods, “Do You Love Me” by the Contours, “Hey Baby (They’re Playing Our Song)” by The Buckinghams, “Love is Alive” by Gary Wright, “If You Really Love Me” by Stevie Wonder, “Back is Black” by Los Bravos and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ ” by the Righteous Brothers.

It’s clearly a deeper playlist than latter-era Fox 97.1 or Cool 105.7. You can download the official switchover here.

And former afternoon jock Steve Mitchell, fired on the “Leap Day Massacre” along with most of the Eagle air staff, emailed some thoughts and hey, almost everybody else got their two cents so here ya go, Steve!

Life lessons are everywhere, everyday. The events of the last several weeks have only reinforced what my folks (and probably yours) always told me….never buy more than you can afford. You just may have to get rid of everything else just to keep your prized possession. This is in effect what happened when Citadel bought the ABC stations. I know if I was a Disney shareholder (50% owners of Citadel) I wouldn’t be too happy with what has happened less than 2 years after the sale closed. But business is business, even if it’s bad business.

It’s hard to say if any of us will ever be on Atlanta radio again, but I wanted to personally thank all of our listeners. I am proud to have been associated with 106.7, going all the way back to 1990 and the 3 year stint with Rhubarb in the morning. In 1997 I became Program Director and set out to be the best we could, given our role as a flanker to Kicks. Knowing we would not have the tools, resources or attention they had only made us try harder and it brought the staff together. Hopefully it translated into a pleasurable listening experience for our listeners, who we always thought of as family. It warms my heart to read all the comments on Rodney’s blog and know we had touched our listeners in some way.

Professionally, I have already moved on, focusing on voiceover work Steve Mitchell Voiceworks and video production Steve Mitchell Productions …but, for the record: I’ve got more radio in me and a wealth of knowledge and market longevity to go with it. As a matter of fact, I know 11 other people just like me!

I’ve had the pleasure of working with some awesome and talented folks over the years….folks like Cadillac Jack, who was only 21 when he first came to work there, and I’ve watched grow into the star that he is…and who actually called me the night we got canned just to see how I was doing. A class act. In situations like this, you find out who your friends are. Another one of those life lessons.

God Bless you all. It was a pleasure,

Steve Mitchell

Well, at least they went with a deep playlist. That’s the only way Oldies can generate any long-term listener loyalty.

Great to have a real oldies station back in Atlanta. The only way it will stay is if they really play a huge number of good songs. At times both Fox97 and Cool 105 claimed to be playing more variety but they weren’t. “Dirty Water” by the Standells wasn’t played after the mid 90’s on Fox and never on Cool, yet was the theme song of this past fall’s (2007) World Series on Fox TV. “Color Him Father” by the Winstons appeared on a WQXI LP of great oldies from the 70’s yet was never ever played by 97.1 or 105.7. That and 2 or 3 thousand other songs. Time will tell if this new Shannon format will work or not. Bringing back Randy and Spiff (or even Gary McKee if he could be talked out of retirement) in the morning (instead of Imus) would be a great move.

Expounding upon Stevie B’s comment —any station that will follow a WQXI playlist is worth listening to and will be a success with true oldies listeners. Good luck 106.7!

I hate what has become of 106.7. I loved the OLDIES they played on Sat. and Sunday nights. But Steve Mitchell is the reason I stopped listening to Eagle. He and his messed up POLITICS about supporting BUSH and the GOP and making fun of Hillary and Democrats. Remember, Steve, you made fun of people who didn’t support the “War on Terror” HELLO, Steve the US/Mexican border is open but TERRIORIST are too dumb to know that. I do not care what has become of the EAGLE now that I think about Steve Mitchell, ex PROGRAM DIRECTOR!

Only thing that might save it is Imus in the a.m. May listen for curiosity’s sake.

It was almost by accident that I tuned in early Sunday while re-setting my alarm/radio to “spring forward.” Suddenly I was hearing songs I hadn’t heard for eons, and enjoying 99 percent of what I heard! The REAL oldies— even non-Beatles and the sappy crappy ones— are what Oldies stations should be about. Hooray! Sorry others are ready to vomit— I’m feeling quite fine thank you! JSJ

Imagine my surprise when I wanted to listen to the country oldies after the race Sunday night and wound up listening to the Beach Boys instead !. (not that I have anything against them by the way) But I really wish that “The Eagle” hadn’t flown away. But I guess that’s the way it goes in radio I guess. I’ll miss Rhubarb the most. But good bye to all of you who were at the Eagle and good luck in what ever you decide to do from here on out.

Excellent… love that we have a station like this again. The deeper the cuts, the better. I kind of hope they don’t play too many soft rock 70’s tunes. If they play ANY Nuggets-type 60’s garage rock I’ll not turn the station.

I hated to see Rhubarb go and the format change at 106.7, so I guess we’re all going to have to start listening to Bo Wilson on Gold 104.3 in Dahlonega to get our country fix.

The Eagle has been my favorite radio station for a long time. The commercial load in recent months has caused my CD player to win out though. I will never forget posting a comment about the “Dixie Chicks” back when they formally resigned from country music in front of an audience. Rhubarb called me later that day and we had a 10 minute conversation. I will always appreciate that. I wish everybody well and somewhat identify with your business as I have been in broadcasting (television) for 34 years.

All the best to the Eagle staff.

I don’t like Imus, you should get Randy and Spiff back if you want some good morning radio. We all need something to laugh out having to deal with the traffic and such, they were a hoot every morning, and get Art “Madman” Maring to the traffic reports. If you’re going to change the format of a radio station, you should at least let the listeners know and ask their opinion to see what they want.

The Eagle’s GONE?!? I leave town for one week and they take away my radio station! My boyfriend and I have very different music tastes, but we could always agree on 106.7. You have no idea what kind of musical strife you’ve just added to our car rides.

Imagine my surprise when my radio alarm came on at 6:30 this morning, which was my first indication that my Eagle had flown! This happened to me a few years ago when Randy and Spiff were suddenly and unceremoniously yanked from the air. It shows tremendous disrespect for the listeners.
My sympathies to the staff who are out of work—having been involved in a mass layoff myself in the past, I know how unpleasant this is. I hope you all land on your feet somewhere soon, but I’ll be listening to my CD’s—I can’t trust radio. Burned twice.

well, 106.7 is now deleted from my radio preset. Back in the day 106.7 was one of the few country stations to play new releases as well as classics like “Pancho & Lefty”, etc. I wonder if 94.9 or 101.5 will pick up, the slack. I doubt it…

Even though I love the oldies music, I loved listening to Rhubarb & Dallas in the morning. They made me laugh and feel good. I even bought a car because when I test drove it; WYAY Saturday Night Country Gold was on the air. I have had my radio set to 106.7 The Eagle ever since. This morning when I had the radio on it was more talk than music. On subjects I couldn’t care less about. Why not get Randy & Spiff back.

Atlanta radio has now come full circle…sadly the transformation is complete. There is now NO radio for the 35-60 age group. For folks that dont follow the buisness part of radio, let me tell you why we lost the EAGLE, simply, we got old……radio is aimed at the 18-35 age group, cause they are the ones that are listening the most, and so their taste is what we have to hear, plain and simple. I will sorely miss the eagle, just as I miss 94Q, 96 Rock, and Z-93, but sadly, that just shows my age. I wish the fine folks that were canned all my best, I guess its time for me to break out some CDs, thank God the bean counters at citadel can’t take them away.

The Eagle is gone and i feel like I have lost part of my family. It has been the “default” radio station in my car since 2000. The crew there was incredible and it always appeared they were having fun doing what they were doing so we listeners shared in that, too. Rhubarb Jones is the the biggest “class act” in Atlanta media and one of the most generous and thoughtful people anywhere. To go from Rhubarb and Dallas most mornings to hearing Imus when I tuned in this morning made me literally ill.

To the former Eagle 106.7 crew, thank you every one for some great years of entertainment and for being a consistently positive influence. What happened “just ain’t right” for you or the listeners. I wish you all the best and hope to hear from you all again soon on Atlanta radio!

Well, I was excited when I heard we had an oldies station back in Atlanta. However, when I turned it on this morning there was no music, only talk. And Imus of all people! YUK! Who wants to listen to a bunch of nonsensical gibberish on their morning commute. In the 10 minutes I had it on I heard no music, whatsoever. I’ll try again this afternoon. If there’s no music, consider me G-O-N-E! There are some great oldies DJs around. Why not woo some of them over to your side? I’ll switch to KICKS or The Bull if this station doesn’t improve and, I fear, another oldies station will bite the dust!

I’m sad for Eagle, they have been an Atlanta icon for so many years. They didn’t deserve this kind of treatment. I hope the best for all of you impacted. As far as the oldies, I love the old Fox 97 and 105.7 but with RANDY AND SPIFF, bring them back and I’ll listen. As for Imus and his “oldies”…they need to be on a porch in a rocker gumming their oatmeal!

I already miss the Sunday night oldies show, which was promoted as the longest-running radio show in Atlanta (don’t know if that’s true or not, but I’ve been listening to it for 5, 6 years). Please let us know if another station picks up that show or something similar, and whatever happens to Rob Lee, who was its host. Music on the radio is basically dying; computerized playlists and changing formats are a result of people listening to CDs, satellite and other options. The notion of flipping channels to hear your favorite tunes is fading away fast. I grew up in the 70s but I’m honestly sick to death of the same old oldies from that area that plays on The River (if I hear The Steve Miller Band one more time, I might have to poke something in my ear canal). I grew to love old country as I grew older and wiser, but nobody else plays any that I’m aware of. So much for radio.

Dallas/Ms. Karen T-lovely woman. I remember the article about when her ex held her hostage. I think I read she escaped after taking a shower-the ex was not looking and she ran across the street to a house with two young boys. She hid in their closet while the ex kicked in the door and shot one. the other called police. I like listening to her on the radio -she and Cadillac should make a good pairing.

To grfndr and other non-Imus fans: I’ve been listening to Imus since 1997 when he first appeared on Atlanta radio (790 AM). I couldn’t wait to get in my car this morning to hear his show on FM for the first time. I will admit that Imus is something of an acquired taste, but it is most certainly NOT “a bunch of nonsensical gibberish”. It is a mix of social and political discussion and commentary, with a good dose of comedy. Admittedly, some of the comedy involves put-downs, but unless you’re one of those individuals who can’t admit that your poo poo stinks, it’s very funny. To grfndr specifically: If you listen to Imus for more than 15 minutes, uninterrupted, you will hear a fantastic mix of music as the show goes to commercials and comes out of them. I never listened to Randy and Spiff, but if they were anything at all like other local morning drive time talk in Atlanta that I have heard, I’ll take Imus every time. If you want to laugh and think, give Imus a try. If you just want to zone out on the way to work, it looks like 106.7 is no longer the place for you. For me, it’s the new morning preset on my car radio. If anyone out there knows where to go to give positive feedback and encouragement to 106.7, please post it here. If you agree with my post, pass the word that Imus is back in Atlanta and on a station that can actually be heard outside I-285!!!

I am truly excited to have oldies back on my radio. I did, however, listen to Eagle because the other stations had morning shows that were not to my liking. When I first began listening to the Eagle a.m. show, Rubbie was the predominate d.j. I began searching for a new morning show when I had about all of Dallas that I could take. Her sarcastic banter with Southside Steve finally got to me, so I began searching. I’m glad she didn’t end up in the unemployment line (and I’m sorry so many others did—radio is a brutal business!), but I’m glad she is on a station I don’t frequent. Wasn’t a fan of Imus’ this morning but will give him another try. He’s just not my cup of tea when I’m trying to get my day started. Randy and Spiff were enjoyable to me. I wish they were together again with my oldies on 106.7.

I’m not saying that everyone will enjoy Imus, but he is funny in a different sort of way that makes me smile and not take myself so seriously. If you research what he and his wife, Deidra, do re: kids with cancer, SIDS, and other projects, I think you’ll find a pretty worthy person behind the “shock jock” stereotype. He might not be your cup of tea, and that’s fine, but I’m glad he’s back on in Atlanta. If you want something more relaxing in the morning, that’s fine, too. To each his/her own.

I had the pleasure of working with Steve Mitchell at 96rock when it was a radio station. I was getting off the air at 6am on Saturday. Steve was coming in to do Psycadelic Saturday, a program 96rock aired when it was a radio station. We had a pleasent discussion and watched the sun come up at the Triangle Bldg. Steve was a premo production talent then and he will do fine now.

Atlanta lost 96rock…94Q…Eagle and other good stations and good people..it’s real shame.

It’s great that 106.7 changed, I mean it was a great country station but the oldies are something that or hard to find now days. Plus they had the guts to bring Imus in the Morning back to radio in Atlanta. So don’t mess with my radio’s, they are locked on WYAY 106.7. I can only say “IT IS ABOUT TIME…” 97.1 claims to play oldies but hey when you hear the same songs 20 times a day and most of those I’ve never heard of and I’m 54 years old that is not OLDIES. There is a library of oldies from the 50’s all the way to 80’s even the 90’s for some. You could play songs for weeks without playing the same song twice… I thank you from the bottom of my heart I LOVE the new 106.7. Elaine

Elaine Teal, a little music lesson (and I’m not trying to be rude or disrespectful)…… 97.1 (The River) plays Classic Rock Hits, not Oldies. Oldies are generally considered to be 1950’s-early 1960’s rock and roll and 1950’s - early 1970’s pop music. Classic Rock is mid/late 1960’s-early 1980’s Rock and Roll. There is some overlap of course, but basically Oldies and Classic Rock are two different things. Lots of people (myself included) consider The Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper album to be the beginning of Classic Rock because it changed music so much. Sorry you don’t know a lot of the songs played on The River….you sure have missed out on some great music (I’m 47, so I’m not a whole lot younger than you.). I do wholeheartedly agree that The River’s play list is way too narrow (as do a lot of the knowledgeable Classic Rock fans that frequent this blog). I’m glad that oldies lovers got a radio station back that y’all can enjoy……I’ll probably listen to it some myself.

I was SO EXCITED to hear about your station changing from a country to oldies format!!

I have been listening to 97.1 for many years, all the way back to the time it was Fox 97. I moved to Florida for a few years, and when I came back, it seemed that the radio market in Atlanta had gone insane. I couldn’ believe how awful it was.

I continued to listen to 97.l because I prefer oldies, but I got extremely tired of the same thing over and over and over and over.

So, imagine my delight to find out that another oldies station was coming for my enjoyment. I began listening Sunday night after the race. It was wonderful!

But alas, my joy didn’t last. Monday morning when my clock radio went off, I didn’t hear my beloved oldies, but a different kind of oldie - DON IMUS!!! OMG!!!! What a disappointment!!

Even if he didn’t sound like he has a mouth full of cotton and I could understand what he was trying to say, I still wouldn’t listen to him. He annoys the crap out of me!!

So, this certainly burst my bubble and made me sad. I had such high hopes for the new station’s format, but somebody ruined the whole thing when they put that guy on.

So close, and yet so far!

Why not hire Randy and Spiff to be back on in the mornings? They would be a MUCH BETTER FIT and a heck of a lot more fun.

Good luck to everyone there and to all the people who got fired. I’ve been there, and it really is a terrible thing to go through.

Signed, An almost listener.

Its about time we have the oldies back. Now if you would just bring back Chris Morgan, J.J. Jackson and take IMUS off in the morning it will be a fabulous station. I love it but I wont listen in the morning because of IMUS, he is so AWFUL. Bring Chuck Boozer back too.

Thanks to the powers that be for bringing back the oldies. I don’t know how long it will be on as the powers decide on their whim to jerk us around without any notice. I would totally be in heaven along with thousands of others if Randy and Spiff would head up the morning show. I am sorry for the crew at Eagle that got axed. I really didn’t realize how fickle radio executives are. It seems they don’t care what the listeners want or how they feel. It’s all about the almighty dollar, unfortunatly. Anyway I’m happy for the time being with my oldies again. The only way it could be better is with RANDY AND SPIFF.

Rocker Thanks for the lesson - I was mainly trying to make a point that the radio stations today play the same ole same ole. 97.1 was as close to the oldies as you could get. But again I do appreciate you input. elaine

It was very rude to not let the listeners know the switchover to true oldies was going to take place. I started listening to the Eagle because of Rubarb. He is kind right to the bone, and a gentleman from the heart. I loved hearing him point out one morning that he never forgot that little kids listen to what their mamas are listening to, so he absolutely never allowed any cuss words - mild or otherwise - on his show, or off-color jokes, because of those little kids. Rubarb did not need a co-host and my view is “rocks in the head” of whoever made the decision to add Dallas. I totally cannot stand her mouth. Since a co-host for Rubarb was cast in stone, Southside Steve was a true asset. He and Rubarb were a wonderful combo. Southside is also a truly kind gentleman, right from the heart. I knew they were getting rid of him when he was sent outside the station to do those stupid spots. Dallas was likely the root of that phase-out. I’m glad Southside is still on the air although I don’t like the music they play, so I don’t listen.
Rob Lee is marvelous on true oldies. I love all the behind-the-scenes info he gives the listeners - stuff the general public never knows about. It’s fascinating. I’m loving the music they are playing, too, especially on Rob’s time slot. I was heartily sick of listening to the same stack of records 4 times a day every day of the week on the Eagle.
You probably don’t realize that there are literally thousands of taxi drivers, ambulance driver teams, and couriers (all of whom nearly literally live in their vehicles) who listen to the radio on their 8-12 hr. shifts. They are the ones you need to remember when you think about playing the same record again, the same day. Overall, I’m genuinely loving the true oldies format, especially Rob Lee’s spot.
I miss Rubarb and Southside very much. Rubarb probably had several things outside radio he’s just been waiting for retirement, to get started doing. Rubarb and Southside are a marvelous, winning combo. - I’m also enjoying hearing several others of the voices that we heard every day on the Eagle. I sincerely hope this new true oldies will be a raging success.

I heard Rob Lee on the oldies station yesterday afternoon and he did a marvelous job. I thought he only knew a lot about classic country, but he knew as much about the oldies as he did the classic country. I miss the classic country on the former Eagle.. but if I hear Rob Lee doing oldies I will be a happy camper.

I switched over to the new Oldies station and really enjoyed it today. As many people have commented before it was be AWESOME if they would hire Randy and Spiff and bring them back together. Randy does an admirable job on WGST but splitting them up was not the best move in the world.

As far as the Eagle fans and employees, this is exactly how most of us felt when Clear Channel switched from Lite FM to the Bull right in the middle of the Christmas music. We were stunned and mad.

If this station wants to make it, they need to continue to have a deep play list. I’m looking forward to tuning in tomorrow.

I am SO glad that True Oldies is back on the air. There are still a LOT of us boomers out there and we DO NOT LIKE rap or Pearl Jam. Further, the River only has 150 songs that they play over & over & over. I now hate the Eagles & Fleetwood Mac thanks tothe River. Welcome to Atlanta True!

I MISS THE EAGLE SOOOOOOOO MUCH. THAT HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE RADIO STATION SINCE I WAS A LITTLE KID. I WAS SO STUNNED AND SPEECHLESS TO LEARN THAT IT HAD CHANGED TO SOME CRAP OLDIES. I REMEMBER THE CHANGE FROM Y-106.7 TO EAGLE 106.7. IT IS SO DEPRESSING FOR ME TO GET IN THE CAR AND FIND NOTHING TO LISTEN TO ON THE RADIO. I TRULY HOPE AND PRAY THAT IT WILL COME BACK. I MEAN WHO LIKES THAT STUPID BULL CRAP MUSIC ANYWAYS? YOU CAN JUST TURN YOUR DIAL TO 97.1 THE RIVER. I HAVE MANY MEMORIES OR LISTENING TO THE EAGLE AND I AM SO SAD THAT THEY WILL NOT CONTINUE. R.I.P EAGLE R.I.P. IT WOULD BE SO AWESOME TO FIND THAT NOBODY LISTENED TO THAT NEW CRAP CHANNEL IN THE EAGLE CAME BACK, BUT THATS PROBABLY NOT GOING TO HAPPEN SO I’LL JUST HAVE TO RESORT TO C.D.s SIGNED, A VERY DISSAPOINTED LISTENER.

As the one who moved Z-93 from an Automated Taped Playlist to Live DJ’s in the early 70’s, I have seen a lot in the Atlanta market over the years. About 50% of the major changes and wrecks in Station Formats have not produced a Winning Team after going thru the killing fields. Rock-n-Roll and Country/Western are the two dominant formats on the radio (soon to be challenged by Mexican). Both come in several styles. However, those of us not in the 18-35 YO range, get left out in the vote of what we want. That is why I went to XMSR 4 years ago. Decades of Rock-n-Roll, and 5 channels of C/W, with special limited editions of both on a quarterly basis. I too have lamented as some really fine talent has been here and gone there, some re-cycled a couple of times. Blogs like this are looked at by many that may or may not make the same mistakes again. This will come to pass again, as it is cyclic. You just gotta know which lane to be in when things get wrecked.

I will make this short and simple, what the station NEEDS is ‘RANDY AND SPIFF”. These 2 have MANY, MANY followers who are very loyal fans. I am not in the industry, so cannot speak for why they have had troubles. I can only say that I miss the whit and humor that nobody else has. I even swithched to talk radio just to listen to them, but stopped when Spiff was not longer a part of the program. PLEASE SOMEBODY BRING THEM BACK!!!! OK maybe not short……

By another vote for Randy and Spiff

I agree with Debbie. I also followed Randy and Spiff to talk radio, just to stop listening when Spiff was removed from the show. I’d love to have them back on radio, and in their “oldies” setting would be perfect. I hope that someone is actually reading these posts and sees that these two guys are just what they need.

I love the oldies and I really like the new 106.7 Tru-oldies, great songs, not too many commercials. I stopped listening to country a couple of years ago, and it’s nice to have an oldies station back in Atlanta. I love Randy and Spiff too, wish they were on this new format.

I hate the way radio stations suddenly change without warning - it’s obvious that “loyal listeners” means nothing to the “powers that be”. I have to say that I love the oldies but refuse to turn my radio on to 106.7 in the morning because they have Don Imus on - I can’t believe that!!!! He is offensive and disgusting….if I didn’t love the oldies so much I wouldn’t listen to the station at all just because they have him on there!!! They need Randy and Spiff in the mornings not that creep Imus!

We are grateful to have an Oldies station with a deep play list back in the Atlanta market. The big question concerns its staying power: Is it just a matter of time before it too disappears from the airwaves?

I had to change the radio to 101.5..I was sosososo sad to hear the format changed. 106.7 was a great lift for the spirits as one drove to work each morning. I hope Rhubarb goes to another station in Atlanta and I will surely listen to that one. Too bad about the change , it is certainly not an improvement. This is from a country music fan , oldies yuck!!!
