5/16: Shelley Wynter off WAOK
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

WAOK-AM, the news/talk station targeting African Americans on 1380, has dismisssed its moderate/conservative-leaning afternoon talk show host Shelley Wynter after two and a half years.
“I loved WAOK and have nothing bad to say about the experience there,” Wynter said, whose show was dubbed “The Right Side.”
WAOK hasn’t seen much in the way of ratings of late, trumped by the much stronger signal and appeal of Grown Folks 102.5 on the FM dial, where Steve Harvey and Michael Baisden have had a strong impact.
“I believe if we had the same signal as 102.5, we could just as well,” he said. “If someone is looking for a high-quality radio program that reaches out to not only the African American professional but also whites and wants to grow revenue, please give me a call!”
You can contact him at swynter@rainmakersatl.com or at his Web site, www.shelleywynter.com

I had stopped listening to him, too bombastic and extremely tempermental. I know he was attempting to become a black Hannity, Limbaugh or O’Reilly but they have the market cornered. Bye Bye and good riddance!!!

Fred!!!! Here’s your chance!!!! Fred!!!! After listening the last two years I’d say Shelley was more of a Libertarian than a conservative Republican. Okay what will WAOK try now? Liberal talk doesn’t work. Conservative talk doesn’t work. Bring back Rose at least the sports talk was entertaining.

Shelley was the highlight of my evening commute. First they cut back on Rob’s show, move Lorraine to the mornings, and now this. They are losing me as a listener. Tried to listen to Derek who is on now in the afternoon and just couldn’t do it.
Shelley was entertaining some times, but was right on point with the topics that needed to be discussed.
Funny, the station seemed to be doing well, then CBS came in.

I wish Shelley good energy.I thought he was the best on WAOK but WAOK is known to keep those they favor while getting rid of the quality hosts.
I didn’t like how the same callers called in just to disagree with Sheely just because they were called out.People called Shelley rude but Lorraine White is very rude to some callers and she has a very negative energy for women/teeanage girls, for a minister, which is why I deem her as just another fake preacher.

Coz is in New York/Jersey doing mornings. While at a slight lost for words, I do think AOK should just let a producer sit in and give each of the 10 callers who call every day every show an equal share of the 4 hours…LMAO.
Sure Shelley will land on his feet, but LOL at diversity radio in Atlanta. I wanna see that. Oh I forgot, Obama will heal the US.

I will miss Shelley’s show. It was nice to have a show that offered different opinions and view points from the typical African-American political show. Finally there was a show that didn’t tout the usual “victim” speech, or blame the “white racist system” for all the ills in our community. It will be really interesting to see who they get to fill the time slot on a permanent basis. If it’s someone who subscribes to the theory we’re victims, and fails to lay some of the responsibility of what happens on us, then they’ve lost a listener.

I agree with darkstar3D. WAOK has a history of firing its very best host. People who are thought provoking and entertaining just don’t seem to survive there. Coz Carson, Rose Scott, Rob Redding and now Shelley. If WAOK is to continue in this market, it needs to rid itself of upper management personnel.

This news saddened me. Shelley had the best talk show on WAOK hands down, other hosts on that station can’t hold a candle to him. His intelligent listeners were indicative of how great that show was. I didn’t start listening to WAOK until Shelley came and I won’t be listening now.

WAOK just lost a listener. Shelley was the only intelligent host on that station. His perspective was enlightening and refreshing. I bet they get DB to replace him, which would be more of the same old, same old. More enabling the culture of victimization, less personal responsibility and accountability. I always thought Shelley was too smart for that station anyway. I’m sure he’ll land on his feet. This ruins my afternoon commute as well.

I can’t believe that Shelley Wynter is off the air!! He was AWESOME and always encouraged the listeners to look at things differently instead of the same old ways that do not produce positive results for the community. WAOK has lost a listener. Best wishes Shelley and I can’t wait to find you on another radio station!

WAOK has lost another listener. Shelley was the best thing going for the station. I can’t listen to any of the other shows and the trivial things they talk about. Shelley made you think and I believe the show was definitely a step in the right direction from African American’s who have far too much victim mentality. The show will be missed. I thought the show was actually too good for such a bubble gum station with a horrible signal. I hope Shelley will find his voice again and I hope he knows he built a following out there that will follow him.

Shelley Wynter forgot to add that if anyone is interested in someone who’s not comfortable with his sexuality, then he’s the man they want. To prove how this he will stoop to any level, even sexism and behavior that proudly immitates that of someone who is 12.

You will hear Shelley again, mark my words, whether it will be on another station in the ATL with a stronger signal (i.e. 640 a.m., 920 a.m., 750 a.m.) or on radio one. I can’t beleive WAOK let him go. What the HELL was they thinking. He was even being showcased nationally by going on CNN, which was giving WAOK more publicity. I am about done with this two bit station!!

Damn, I am sick and tired of Black talk radio balking and squawking about the white man.Do all black people have to be on the left? Was it a ratings thing? If it was, I guess you have to get another left winger to spew the victim rhetoric and the phone lines will blow up. Shelly will be missed!!!!

WAOK or Shelly Show did not even show up on the latest rating for pete’s sake! Shelley was a blowhard, he didn’t do his homework at times, was often wrong about topics, and couldn’t hold his temper when corrected or called out for his mistakes. The dial is full of people on the right if one wanted to hear that particular bent. I guess he can now go on Hannity or O’Reilly and compete with Jesse Lee Peterson or Armstong Williams for who can be more anti-black.

I don’t believe that Shelley was let go because of ratings,I believe it had something to do with all the drama that the caller Nicole started with her video on Youtube.
As another poster said Shelley was being called to give his political his views on CNN.Shelley got calls from listeners who tuned in to his show on the internet in other areas of the country.
Even though I didn’t agree with Shelley on everything,I thought he pulled the lid off some of the Black politicians pimping the community by making it seem as if they cared about the people, when they are about self interest.

WAOK has lost this internet listener from New York City…if I wanted to hear Negro, nationalistic, ‘fight the man while sitting on my hands radio”, I would listen to the diatribe that pollutes the airways in New York.
Also, I found listener Nicole criticism of Shelley rather puzzling, when Shelley, since I have been listening, has given her viewpoint and her business a lot of air time…(possibly free of an ad purchase on her part), ran a contest where she won Best Female Listener…and would vouch her positions when other callers would critize her. Would he always agree with her? ‘No.’ And nor should he…his show was on radio…with mandatory breaks and he was a host who had to adhere to his producer.
Best wishes Shelley! Thank you for making radio interesting! Congrats on the door opening for a new and better opportunity. It’s just around the corner.

waok has lost another listener I can see how Shelley would be dismissed from WAOK, as they always seem to fire their best. Its obvious that the station is run by folks who are influenced by things other than talent. There is NO reason why Dr. White is still on the air and Shelley is gone. Dr. White is absolutely terrible as a radio talk show host and is about as fake as they come. WAOK should be ashamed of itself and I hope and pray that Shelley shows his hand and shows them up. I will NOT be listening to WAOK again.

WAOK is a ghetto and stank. The callers are complete idiots that do nothing but spout ignorance and show how small-minded they are. And any station that would give a show to a coon like Derrick Boazman needs to be shut down immediately.

It is amazing what black radio puts on. It appears that all they want to talk about is “how the White man is putting the brother down?” Well, if it weren’t for white men that bought your ancestors from the black slave traders of Africa-aka the tutsi’s and the Zulu’s-you’d have NO radio station at all, no BET, no Bill Cosby and no Mars Corp. No where did you receive a letter stating that you would get 100K a yr for not working. The USA was founded on freedom to choose your own career and not be told like in Russia! If you think Africa is so much better-like Zimbabwe or Mugabelnad-GO! See how much fun it is looking for food and running awayr from bullets. Oh that’s right-the youth already run away from the police and gang/drug violence-just turn on the news. If Africa gives you so much freedom that you can mug and rob and kill anyone you want-then GO! In the meantime, you need to listen to people who are telling you reality. This is America-act like an American or leave. Remember who founded America. and the majority Rules-not the other way around. Make something of yourself and accept responsibility. Don’t blame others for your failure-YOU are the only ones keeping yourselves down. Bill Cosby speaks the truth! Jackson/Sharpton/Farrakhan are not truth tellers and are only in it for themselves. When was the last time THEY gave you a job or gave YOU money? Think about it.

I wish Shelley the best and know that he will continue moving forward. As for some of the comments that some of you are making re: WAOK, its hosts, etc are so poisonous that I really do HATE this conversation from AA. No one is crying victim but it seems if you bring up race, slavery, or whatever that you are blaming “OTHERS”. Please people. And then someone has even suggested that we should be happy for the enslavement of Black people OMG…This why I can’t listen to “URBAN” talk radio b/c on both sides of the issue when have some SELF HATING and SICK people.

Why must the station continue to sell itself short with, at best, mediocre, but, oft times, below par talent. It is an affront to the listeners and the community. Quality begats quality. Management must stop playing us so small. Shelley was a thought-provoking talent who did not kowtow to the Atlanta institutionalized, well-connected in-breds who populate city, county and state office. His criticisms were a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale, one-dimensional environment. I have tried to support WAOK, but I can’t any longer.

I won’t be listening to WAOK any longer. While Shelley did at times come unglued on the program in going back and forth with listeners, I did “get” what he was trying to accomplish. Before Shelley, I had not heard such a wide variety of thoughtful topics and guests on WAOK.
Sometimes you need a break from the whole “fight the power” thing, which is ALL that Coz Carson ever gave you (and Derek Bozeman will give you the same). People can knock Shelley for his ‘conservatism’, but he really isn’t a conservative, because he’s all over the place in his views. And that’s perfectly okay with me, because no one should allow themselves to be put into a box by a label. I just think he’d like to think he is a conservative…
Hopefully Shelley will continue to improve upon his on-air etiquette and will land somewhere else. I do think his brand of radio talk show is very necessary in the Black community. I personally have no time for the whole “victimhood” and “blame-everyone-and-everything-else-except-ourselves” thing.

I’m really upset to hear about Shelley’s departure. While WAOK does a pretty good job of taking care of the community, it doesn’t seem to take very good care of some of its host.
Shelley will be SORELY missed. He helped balance out the day.
Finally, I’m a little upset about WAOK not getting a stronger signal. Often I can’t get it where I live as early as 6:00 p.m. This makes no sense.

We all should boycott the caller Nicole’s store. I think it was her fault that Shelley was fired. His show was informative and exciting. I for one will not be listening to WAOK any longer. WAOK,
I’m a 32 year old Atlanta native that would never even think of letting my dial stop on WAOK until about 3 months ago when I just so happen to stop find Shelley Wynters show “The Right Side.” From that moment on could no longer listen to my usual 790 sports talk radio because I had found a talk show that was the most intelligent, no punches pulled, informative talk show on the radio for that time slot and pretty much throughout the day.
And eventhough I never fully agreed with everything Shelley said I “GOT” it. And the more I listened the more it became evident that the younger adults like me were getting it. It it was a viewpoint and a slap in the face that our community and local talk show airwaves so desperately needed.
WAOK, you have set your listners IQ and the community back. You don’t grow a station with shows catering and pandering to the victimized school-of-thought that understandbly and mostly dominates the older generation. You do so by empowering the youth to not even believe in those barriers and thus act accordingly.
With that said, Thanks alot WAOK. I’m back to 790 the Zone.

No offense to Nicole, but I don’t think she has that much pull.
I think the listeners who are upset about this should join in a concerted boycot. I’d say at 2:15 on Thurs. just switch from WAOK. Let them feel it all at once.
Might help to have a few of the regular callers not call in during that entire day.

It is instructive to see the manner in which this change was handled. No info on the website, no response from WAOK management to the website comment section queries, no announcement, … How did we get the word? AJC through Journalist Rodney Ho on Friday 5/16!
Management would be surprised how many people in Atlanta and around the country listen to the station in the 12-6 time slot because of the substantive content while at work. The contrast in the 2-6 slot is particularly stunning based upon topic and content over the past week!!

If you are streaming try WVON - Chicago (Roland S. Martin, also a dynamic male - female duo - Matt & Perri @ 8:00 PM ET) , WOL - D.C., WWRL - N.Y.C. (Coz Carson early mornings). Crickets pooting into a microphone would be better radio than WAOK! Garbage! The entire station is garbage. Nothing but a hot ghetto mess catering to crooked preachers, project skanks, simple-minded porch monkeys, and folks that didnt complete 6th grade….this station will continue to be a joke as long as they allow ignorant people to call in and make outrageous comments. And with the exception of Shelley and Lorraine, everyone on there is a disgrace. Boazman is a damn fool, who shouldnt even be allowed to walk the earth. I am sooooooooooo very disappointed. WAOK has lost yet another listener. Shelley stood head and shoulders above his peers at that station. Although he is passionate in his beliefs, he challenged his listening community to think with thier intellect not with unchecked feelings and emotions. Some resented his ability of forced reasoning. Other open-minded, free-thinking, individuals such as myself, welcomed his style like a breath of fresh air. The doors of WAOK may have closed but I truely believe many many doors will open wide for Shelley. I watched him with pride this past Sunday night on CNN.

I hate that WAOK got rid of Shelley because for me he was just the best on the station and he made a lot of sense.Since they got rid of him I listen to Ed Schultz on the net.
Shelley was about accountability and he showed how some Black Democrats contradicted themselves.I liked how way he dealt with fake revolutionary callers who called being critical of Barack while pretending to support Barack.
Bozeman is a little too ignorant for me at times and he’s just boring,he may mean well but he has a certain target audience.
I don’t like Dr.White or whatever she calls herself, the woman is just too phoney for me and she is just too old to act so naive.

Rob’s show….well, if you cant say anything nice…. Coz was ousted for putting the “chicken eatin” preachers on blast, and now Shelley is gone because the listners just couldnt handle the truth! For all the Shelley fans, I understand your disappointment, but I encourage you to keep in contact w/him via his website, etc. Shelley Shell will be just fine & land on his feet w/a new gig. LOL, IMO, he hustled his way into a job at AOK (remember he used to be a caller) so he’ll get his hustle on again at somewhere else. I don’t know the whole details of the Nicole situation, but for anyone who’s listened to her for any period of time (cause she does call in alot) can tell she has issues. I’m glad Derrick is on now & hopefully will enlighten us more about Atl city government. AOK needs a new format/new hosts & had been needing these for a long time. That’s why their ratings are so low,IMO the signal has little to do w/it. I’ve been a listener since 2002 & I STILL miss Chris Askew (although he’s at WRFG) & Jay McGlauflin (sp) who talked about health. I wish they’d get rid of Lorraine, she brings nothing fresh & I feel she’s a phony as well & her producer or whoever needs to kill it w/all the unnecessary sound effects, it’s annoying & childish. Bev Smith is the saving grace of the station. Personally I’d love to see more hosts who are actually from Atl & know about the history of the city, especially pre-olympics. I think now is the time for listeners of AOK to write them & their parent company & tell them the changes they’d like to see & give them some ideas of what would make for good programming.

I totally agree! Power talk is so bad that I had to listen sometimes because I could not believe what I was hearing. Yet, WAOK gets rid of the best program they had? No, I did not agree with Shelley most of the time, but it takes guts to take on some of those callers. As for Nicole, lets be fair because we don’t know if she had anything to do with this and I don’t know anything about her Youtube video. I do know she sounded like an extremely emotional, angry black woman all the time. Shelley, we’ll be looking for ya at another, much BETTER venue!

Alicia Thomas Morgan is your typical angry, bitter, know it all “Queen”. For the 6 people that still listen to that pathetic station, I wish you good luck and Godspeed.

I totally agree with you about powertalk it is a joke. Evertime I called the show Dr. White would be quick to cut you off as soon as she was backed into a corner with her weak argument. Later I found that I had to speak all of my points in one breath because as soon as I paused I was dropped. I think that is a poor way to have a conversation. Dr. White cannot carry on a real conversation with facts, the only thing that she will use is heresay, speculation and always the VICTIM role. Shelley on the other would welcome opposing views on The Right Side because he knew that the majority of us are on the left yet he thrived in the opposition never wavering his stance and not just dropping you. WAOK you have lost yet another listner with me. You guys can have this white man keeping us down stuff or maybe Dr. White can just keep having more shows with that prophet/physic/palm reader guy everybody loves.

It’s funny, because I have been wanting to rant about Dr. White’s show for awhile now, but did not want to seem like a “hater”. Something that she claims is the reason for everything. Preachers ripping off poor folks and then the public complains, Dr. White says they are HATING. If we question our black leaders then we are HATING. That prophet she has on her show is suspect just google his name and you will find complaint after complaint I will NEVER forget when she had “Superhead” on her show. Dr. White, the reverend had Superhead on her show, and did not check her ONE time on her actions or the things she had to say. Shelley would at least question his guests and challenge them. WAOK, you should be ASHAMED of yourselves!

I second this - ….any station that would give a show to a coon like Derrick Boazman needs to be shut down immediately. Lorraine’s how is scandulous. Her Thursday guest was mentored by Rev Ike. In my opinion Rob Wilson’s show is the station’s flag ship and WAOK should consider moving Rob to the 2:00 - 6:00 slot.

OMG! I was out of town when this happened. At first I thought Shelley was on vacation but this week, still no Shelly, I Googled his name and found this website. I will miss Shelley. While I did not agree with everything he said, he spoke the truth about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for folks that look to the government to fix everything in their lives. He also gave a perspective in politics that I had never heard before. African Americans should stop being blindly loyal to a party that has not delivered the promises made during decades of campaign rhetoric.
Good luck with your future endeavors, Shelley. I am sure you will be a success. If you get a satellite radio show, I will be buying my XM converter!

Good work, WAOK. At this point, you probably only have 10 listeners left in the entire city, and they are most likely senile, crackheads, or pulpit pimps. Way to go, WAOK. The voice of the community should be renamed the voice of the stank, skank, and rank.

Say it isn’t so Santa! I can’t believe Shelly’s gone. Now I’m going to be forced to listen to some victimized plantation commentator. I didn’t agree with Shelly on many occasions but he had the courage to bring in guests that were authoritarian on many subjects rather than pretending he was omnipotent. Before Shelly came the only commercials WAOK had were Public announcements, now WAOK actually have some legitimate corporate sponsors. I have listened to this station for years but now I must jump to the FM side and listen to 102.5. I hope WAOK gets some more batteries for their transmitter so they can increase their listening audience. If they don’t have the money, they should ask the DJs on their sister station V103 to donate some of the money they make hosting all those parties on the weekends.

This is a big mistake and Wynter pointed out severe problems in the black community they don’t want to address like the blind following of the Democratic party.
Can’t stand the heat stay in the kitchen black folks, and watch the hispanic community become more prosperous since they don’t have the loyality of being suckered by the Democaps……….
I’ve listened to the show for about 2 years and the same fools called to talk about issues that had nothing to do with race or the white man(a fictional imaginary icon obsessed by radical blacks to offset their failures of themselves by themselves).
Waok signal is so weak like Wynter stated, I can’t get it outside of the perimeter and not at night when their power is downgraded.

Everyone please calm down. CBS is smart enough to be looking for another conservative talk show host that will do fine until he or she slips like Shelley did and begins to let the same locals call in and dominate the conversation. If Shelley had learned to tie up the phone lines until he got more rational callers with news and comments, he would still be there. Its his own fault that he let that last YOUTUBE woman ruin his career. Oh yeah, Herman Cain IS available…

For the record, Nicole’s Youtube video had nothing to do do with Wynter’s dismissal. Please, lets not give that woman power she does not have LOL. The word on the street is that there were a couple of congressmen who were not too happy with Shelley pushing for folks to run against them, and then giving those same folks air time. If this is true, it means that Shelley was reaching folks. Like him or not, agree or not, I don’t think anyone else on that station has had that type of influence.

I am extremely sad to hear that the Show was “canceled”. I found the show to be progressive and informative. It provoked intelligent thought and prompted interesting conversation. I will miss it. Shelley had the best show on WAOK because his talking style was one that showed that Black people are not monolithic.Shelley made a lot of sense.Shelley was a host who added substance as opposed to a host laced with some fake gimmick just to get by.
I don’t care for Mrs.White because I feel the woman is phoney as hell.I hate how defensive she get when someone says something about the black church that she disagrees with.

Let’s be very clear. I must one powerful BEOTCH if my youtube video can get Shelley fired. Believe me when I say that was not the case. As for some of you boycotting my store, do it. My store does fine. Yeah, there were many times Shelley mentioned my store on the station, but that bit of free publicity did NOTHING for my revenue. Some of you dawg Black businesses out anyway and don’t even patronize your own. But yes, I did appreciate him mentioning my boutique. AND I told Shelley so. I have talked to Shelley since he was let go and he is doing just fine. He and I are cool. People, stop fighting battles that have not a damn thing to do with you. That is for the groupies. You all are mad at the video and Shelley and I laughed about it. LOL! Go figure! He had no problem with me expressing my opinion. Shelley will be just fine. As I stated before, this is his blessing in disguise. We will hear from him sooner rather than later. But if you really want to do something, then stop bitching on this website and go for the station management. Let them know how you feel about Shelley being let go. Holla!

Shelley was my man and 50 grand but you have to be careful playing with the big dogs.
Apparently Shelley’s comments about David Scott caught the ears of some of Scott’s people and they did some digging.
The story on The Redding News Review is Shelley got fired because he was making negative comments about David Scott while accepting consulting payments from Scotts challenger Deborah Honeycutt.
Read it here - http://www.reddingnewsreview.com/newspages/2008newspages/wynteroutatatlantaswaokam0809100033.htm

I am not going to miss Shelley, i listened for a number of months but he became a caricature. Facts he didn’t want to accept he just dismissed even when someone gave them from a source. He has no temperament for doing a live show. I knew he was accepting payments from the GOP, The Redding Report only proves what i believed. Reminds me of Armstrong Williams. Hey Shelley, O’Reilly and Hannity will welcome you with open arms. You have a open invitation to go on those shows and vent your dislike of Sharpton, Jesse, Malcolm, Martin, Dubois, Garvey, Kunta Kinte, and everyone else. Bad move by WAOK. As it is, most of their on-air talent is mediocre; their production value is sub-par; and their advertising (or lack thereof) spoke to this.
Dismissing Shelly Wynter was the worst move they could make. I’m not 100% in agreement with Wynter on many issues, but at least the brotha made people think critically. He had the capacity to bring Black radio out of the AM basement, and into a position of power and influence. None of the other personalities at WAOK possess that ability.
In the end, Wynter may have made people think too critically. Perhaps the powers-that-be at WAOK just couldn’t have that.
Enjoy the trappings of ghetto radio, WAOK. I’m done with you.

I can’t believe Shelley was fired. Even if you disagreed with him you had to agree that he at least challenged Black American and forced them to look at things from a different angle than they were used to. How can a radio station NOT be regulated by the FCC? All stations have an FCC license-they have to apply for one or else by classified as a pirate station or a Sirius radio channel. FCC needs to investigate this station.

I’ve known Shelley Wynter for years (dating back to his days on WCLK) but never regularly listened to WAOK before his arrival.
I was a guest on Shelley’s show multiple times and at times we had opposing views and perspectives on some topics and issues. However, I’ve always had total respect for Shelley and his willingness to shed light and bring much needed awareness, truth, healthy discussion and divergent perspectives to key and important topics and issues facing our communities.

I look forward to Shelley continuing to address the victims mentality, higher levels of crime and imprisonment, generational dependency on the government and social programs, poorer performing schools and inadequate educational achievement, a lack of self-sufficiency, limiting one’s options politically and thus having votes taken for granted, consumers vs. savers (investors) mentality, etc.
Therefore, his departure from WAOK (with its limited reach and poor signal) will likely end up being a tremendous benefit to Shelley and a much larger audience of new listeners that he will likely reach through a bigger stage afforded by his next employer.
