6/22: WSB-TV wins top Southeast Emmy prize
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
WSB-TV, the highest-rated station in town, won the “Station Excellence” award at the Southeast Emmy awards, held Saturday night at the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead. The last time the station took home the prize was 2006.
The well-respected Russ Spencer of WAGA-TV took home the Emmy for best news anchor, beating out Ted Hall at WXIA-TV. This is the third time he has won the prize. Spencer, who has been in the news business for 25 years, has a blog on the TV Web site but it hasn’t been updated in two months.
And in a mild surprise, the 11 p.m. newscast of WGCL-TV won for best daily newscast. This is the station’s strongest performer in ratings (much better than its 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.), often finishing second only behind WSB-TV in the ratings. Ironically, the station just dumped its news director Rich Erbach, bringing in a new man Steve Schwaid.
Blair Meeks won best on-camera reporter for the third year in a row. Too bad he recently left WXIA-TV to enter public relations.
(I normally try to attend the event but it landed on my birthday so I opted not to work so I’m merely culling from the winners’ list.)

Rodney, You are aware that you write a radio and tv column correct? You failed to mention that Kicks and WSB also took home an Emmy together. I know you continue to mourn the fact that the Bull has done nothing to derail Kicks but you should at least attmept to report without bias. I am amazed that the AJC allows you to basically write a society column about your “friends” in the business.

WHAT bias? This is just a capsule of some of the more prominent winners. Had this not fallen on Mr. Ho’s birthday, I’m sure he would have opted to be more detailed in the winners’ list. (And who cares about who beat who in country stations?!)

Ahem! This is a BLOG!!!! Not a column…not a news report! A blog allows the writer to talk about what he WANTS to talk about!!!!!

You’re right about that, this is no news column or news report! Still, it’s the AJC, let’s make it worth reading!

Happy belated Birthday to Rodney. And to Claire - tell your PR department to write up a release b/c this blog is for the writer’s discretion.

I think the question is whether or not part of Rodney’s paycheck includes him writing this blog. If it is, then it should follow that he has a responsibility to the AJC, its editors, and its readers to at least make his entries timely, newsworthy, complete, readable, and with correct grammar/punctuation. Now if he’s not getting paid for it, then none of the above apply, and the AJC is sure being nice to host this “non-news” blog of his personal thoughts (and perhaps biases) on the subject of radio and television.
After reading this for a while now, it appears that Rodney and most of the readers definitely treat this section of the AJC site as a “personal” blog. Personally, I think he should do it out of the confines of the AJC or Cox Media, but it’s not up to me.

Qwerty:
Yes. I get paid to write this blog. And as a blog, it’s a mix of news and opinion. There are no hard or fast rules about how to operate it. As for being timely, I try my best. I post at all hours and even on weekends. Newsworthy is certainly in the eye of the beholder but I do attempt to fulfill that mission to some extent. Complete? Well, that’s a bit tough because I’m not sure how to define what is complete. Readable? My sense is qwerty isn’t a big fan of my writing, eh? As for grammar/punctuation, I am guilty of writing this on the fly and not reading it back to fix grammar/punctuation. I should do better on that front. Nonetheless, I appreciate you reading this even if you don’t seem to like it particularly much.

What, no award for Dagmar Midcap. How about biggest billboard?
