6/26: “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” finally confirmed by Bravo

real housewives cast.jpg

(l-r) Lisa Wu Hartwell, DeShawn Snow, Kim Zolciak, NeNe Leakes, Sheree Whitfield.

Bravo finally confirmed today that, yes, there is a “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” coming to the cable network later this summer.

Here’s how Bravo is spinning it in its press release:

Bravo is heading south for its newest installment, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” The seven episode series will follow five women from Atlanta’s social elite - from NBA and NFL wives to sassy single moms - as they juggle their burgeoning careers and busy home lives with the whirl of the south’s hottest city.

Rumors have been floating around for months and the gossip Web site Young Black and Fabulous provided juicy details of four of the five women on June 9.

This follows the original, trashy “The Real Housewives of the O.C.,” the offshoot “The Real Housewives of New York City” and soon “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” Apparently, Bravo thinks it has its very own “CSI” franchise.

The first 30-minute preview special airs Wednesday, July 30 at midnight after a rebroadcast of “Project Runway.” A specific launch date for the series has not bee set yet.

Here’s how Bravo describes each women:

-DeShawn Snow (above): Snow and her husband Eric, captain of the Cleveland Cavaliers, recently moved to their dream home in Alpharetta, GA. Mother to three boys - nine-year-old EJ, six-year-old Darius and five-year-old Jarren, Snow is an active member of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. She exercises her faith by running The DeShawn Snow Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on improving self-esteem in teenage girls. She is a regular on the Atlanta social circuit and extremely active in local philanthropy, sitting on the board of three different charities, all while expertly juggling her busy social calendar with being an NBA wife and keeping up with her boys.

-Kim Zolciak: Zolciak lives in an exclusive gated townhouse community in Duluth, GA with her two children, 11-year-old Brielle and six-year-old Ariana. Zolciak is single, but happily dating with hopes to marry again in the near future. She also has her sights set on fame in the music business as a country singer, and is currently working with Grammy award-winning mega-producer Dallas Austin and will begin recording an album later this year. A staple on the Atlanta scene, Zolciak balances life as a single mom with a vivacious social life. (Under that name, I have found zero info about her.)

-Lisa Wu Hartwell: Hartwell, a resident of a luxurious country club community in Duluth, GA, is a busy career woman who wears many hats - she owns her own real estate firm, Hartwell & Associates, a jewelry line called Wu Girls, a baby clothing line, Hart 2 Hart Baby, and juggles a budding acting, modeling and writing career. She’s a devoted wife to her husband, NFL player Ed Hartwell, and their three children 13-year-old Jordan, ten-year-old Justin and one-year-old EJ. When she’s not running one of her many businesses or running after the kids, Hartwell is very active in Atlanta’s social scene. She has a holding pattern Web site with no real content but you can see her photo.

-NeNe Leakes: Leakes is an active member of Atlanta society. She resides in the upscale Sugarloaf area of Atlanta with her husband Gregg, a successful real estate investor and business consultant, and their two sons, 18-year-old Brice and nine-year-old Brentt. Leakes donates her time to various foundations and is the founder of The Twisted Hearts Foundation, which brings awareness to domestic violence against women. Never one to sit still, the outspoken social butterfly also hopes to open a luxury boutique hotel in the very near future.

-Sheree Whitfield: Single socialite Whitfield, a resident of the exclusive Sandy Springs area of Atlanta, juggles her busy home life with a packed social calendar. She is a busy working mother to three children -Tierra, Kairo and Kaleigh. Whitfield prides herself on her fashion sense, and owned her own upscale clothing boutique - Bella Azul - for years before closing up shop to focus on her next business venture, a clothing line called “She by Sheree.” Whitfield is opening a new chapter in her life as a single mom while balancing her entrepreneurial spirit and active social life.

Very week lineup… 1) None actually live in Atlanta 2) Most appear elite in their own mind 3) Professional sports wives and music entertainers live in many cities…not sure how this is unique to Atlanta 4) Obvious that Bravo could not tap into the more traditional elite social circles where there would really be some entertainment that reflects the uniqueness of this local scene….

Why are there two single women on a show called “The Real HouseWIVES of Atlanta”? You mean to tell me Bravo couldn’t find five married women to do this show, and had to resort to using two single women who aren’t housewives?

A show featuring a group of self centered, selfish women whose only concern is the next social engagement on their calendar, or a spa appointment. With so much going on with the country and world right now, think of how much all this money could do to solve a lot of the problems. Oh well, guess we still need to feature the trash on TV instead of putting it with the rest of the garbage!

This is almost as embarrassing as the Dunwoody couple on “The Baby Borrowers”. The teen girl is first-class b*h and the teen guy needs to grow a pair. Anyone who appears on a “reality” show needs to understand that we are laughing AT you, not with you.

R1070 hit the nail on the head. Buckhead guy is right too. ITP true. Hm priceless!

These women were NOT good choices to represent Atlanta at all. Although, I LOVED Real Housewives of New York City and reunion episode, I’m not betting on the Atlanta show. (OKay so Bethenny is not yet a housewife, she certainly was the ‘glue’ that held the RHNYC together).

I will give the show a try. Lisa Hartwell and DeShawn Snow qualify, in my opinion as— GLAMOROUS Housewives.

Are you kidding me? These women are not even in the Atlanta area. They’re just shy of Gainesville GA.. LMAO. Bravo should have considered some individuals that live in the elite part of Buckhead or Downtown Atlanta area not Duluth. I mean they probably all know one another thats how small Duluth/Lawrenceville area is. Plus, its suppose to be HouseWIVES of Atlanta… there are only two that are actually married. The rest are single mothers….Oh boy… this is nothing like the Housewives of OC. Airing at Midnight… who is actually going to stay up and watch this at midnight… I guess the ladies thought they were getting some real air-time.

Sad and pathetic that people would want to give up their precious downtime to watch this drivel. Is this show supposed to make the rest of us who don’t have a home in an exclusive gated community feel bad, because that’s how this show sounds to me. There are enough problems in the world; why are we watching rich women have even more of the spotlight on them? Boycott I say!!

What?! These women don’t even live in ATLANTA. They are suburban idiots that are a poor representation of what Atlanta high society is truly like. My guess? Bravo couldn’t get any of the Buckhead Betties to agree to be on reality tv and they had to settle for whoever wasn’t busy…..these ladies.

This is a joke. These woman are successful at doing only one thing…..spending the hard earned money of their “professional” husbands or ex-husbands. DeShawn Snow in particular is the laughing stock of the real estate community. EDJ Realty only survived for as long as it did because of Eric Snow’s money and boy did DeShawn spend lots of it to gain her “image!” (Or so she thinks) Last I heard, Solid Source Realty (a discount real estate company) was holding her real estate license.

NOTE None of them are currently doing anything. They are all planning a new venture. Or should I say planning to conquer a “new paycheck” from another successful man. SHAME, SHAME

I too live in the upscale Johns Creek Alpharetta, however I dont live in some country club and even if I did, the lives of these women are VERY UNREALISTIC to the typical lives of your everyday house-wives either here in Metro Atlanta or anywhere elses. So whoopti dooo. But this lifestyle is not REALISTIC for EVERYDAY people. Not even the wives on Desperate Housewives live like this!!!!

By Dee from Metro Atlanta Area

June 27, 2008 8:09 AM | Link to this

I think when stations are going to do a show, they should feature more realistic and down to earth characters than these women. Not taking anything from them, their lives, their success or their social status, but to show a “real” housewife would be to find a middle class mother who on a daily basis tends to the ins and outs of her household, children (and husband, if applicable) and isn’t considered and elite socialite. But something that simple would be too boring for ratings, huh? I personally won’t be tuning in because this particular cast of “housewives” doesn’t appeal to me nor do they sound interesting. Try it again Bravo, but make it more down home and “real” the next time.

Well this is the end of this show. At least the RHW of Orange County they were pretty. Nothing like big fat black women that aren’t really rich either.

This city of the series will not be renewed for sure.

Again everyone looks at and likes too make fun of the south. This will be very comical…Flava Flav will/has been be more entertaining.

Where some of these women cast off’s of Flava Flav?????

From the jist of the comments on this board I think Bravo should reconsider their choices. With the real estate market going to hell in a hand basket, I doubt these women and their husbands are living lavishly…champagne taste on a waters budget so to speak. I really feel that there are many more elite and profound citizens of the Atlanta area than those chosen, most definitely poor representation.I can smell the GHETTO-fied drama already. PUUHLLEEZE!

By Angelique

June 27, 2008 8:34 AM | Link to this

To Dee from Metro Atlanta Area I dso agree with you, see my comment above yours. I want to see a real house-wife that gets up and make her family breakfast, agrgues with her husband to take the garbage out, walks around the house and falls over her children’s toys and shoes, sits with her spouse and tries to figure out “WHAT” bills is important to pay, argues about the price of gas for the zillionth time, tell the kids they have to get rid of Rex the dog because the cost to feed him dips into the family’s budget and let be more REALISTIC and see a house-wife with NO makeup on, walking around in the same clothes for days, possibly havent showered in too days because of her hectic schedule and let not forget what makes us house-wives!!!! Lets not forget the part where we dont want to have sex with our spouses because we are so TIRED from doing EVERYTHING else and chances are it will be a cold day in hell when we put on a piece of lingerie for our spouse. The real everyday house-wife, sleeps in cotton and most of the time wakes up with one of her children in her bed that came in the bedroom during the night. THATS THE REAL LIFE OF AN EVERDAY HOUSE-WIFE!!!! CAN I GAT AN AMEN!!!!

By Rocky

Thank you Lynne! It’s comments like “Shaniqua, Vanikia, Latawanda, Boomqueshia, and Tiffany. Oh boy.” that demonstrates the racist and ignorant attitudes of the people of Atlanta.

David Duke, hm, ugh, JP, Pathetic and Buckhead Guy get over yourselves! I can understand why you would be intimidated by a BLACK WOMAN. They are successful, intelligent, and beautiful; maybe you should take notes.

FYI Socialites don’t only live in Buckhead, Downtown and Midtown. We’re everywhere!

Oh and for the record, the “Fake” housewives of OC are injected with so much Botox and silicon; they can’t even compete with the rich “big fat BLACK WOMEN”!

Stop being jealous, take your hoods off and open your eyes! You racist idiots!

Its funny how you dont have to have much of a brain to be in the Hollywood industry and reap a ton of money, I was thinking the same thing, is this about house-wives or singles, house-wives mean MARRIED!!!! single means NOT MARRIED, NO MAN!!!! 1+1 = 2 not 1&1 = 11 DUH!!!!! Super, I am glad that no one will watch this show. If they did they might be led to believe that Atlanta’s housewives are unable to speak proper English, have confused being gaudy and garish with style, prefer to marry gansta’s and are ok with their husbands running around on them and having multiple children with multiple women. They should have called this show Ghetto gone faux glam or LaQuisha up in da big house.

THIS line up is EXACTLY why I happily left Atlanta last year after 7 years. I was sick and tired of the hip hop and professional athlete culture there that fostered such pathetic individuals like Vick and TI. So very sickening. These women are not the epitome of Atlanta housewives; they are the opposite in fact.

By here we go again

June 27, 2008 10:27 AM | Link to this

It never fails…any article, snippet, or story highlighting successful people other than white people will always drag out the worse posters on the ajc. Your lives and self-esteem have to be completely bottom barrel and miserable if you have to spend any amount of time throwing out negative and bigoted comments on an entertainment blog. Good grief! LOL! How pathetic you must be in real life.

With that said…the entire Housewives series is stupid, in my opinion. There were single women (some with kids) featured on every series, so if you are here complaining about that aspect of this Atlanta show, were you complaining about that when the single women were white?

This is 2008 and whites don’t control all the wealth in this country. Please get over it and stop being so resentful…it just makes you look and sound like a stupid hick.

For the people who are complaining that these women are not housewives, are not all married you must have not watche the earlier seasons.

Most if not all of the women on the OC version worked. AS a matter of fact, I believe Vickie was the primary breadwinner in her family. Did her husband even have a job for most of the show?

When Jo was on the show she did not work, but she was not a wife either. She was just the live in girlfriend. Oh, and she wanted to be in the music industry as well.

After 3 (or more—can’t remember) Lauri just became a wife. Before that she was a single mom living in a small townhouse. Not even wealthy.

And what’s her name that was the former playboy bunny turned real estate agent is married to a former athelete—a professional baseball player.

The concept of the show has not changed one bit. THe only difference is that it primarily features African American women.

this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but that’s what makes reality TV compelling - hopefully Kim won’t feel out of place because I’m certain that those sisters, some of whom may be a bit smitten, have very strong, unyielding personalities

I am white and I think the internet racists are laughable. I guarantee if you met them in person they would swear they were not and have a black “best” friend either now or growing up. You are a joke and if you live your live belittling everyone down to a racial stereotype or insult for folly, you are going to continue to be one emotionally lonely person.

They are damaged goods…I live actually in Atlanta and they have some great looking 20 something chicks that will eat these girls for breakfast….plus you gotta love how they wrote every suburb to look like it is upscale etc…I work in sandy springs….and not so much.

Why didn’t they ask Lisa Taylor to be on the show?? She was the Mansion Madam IN ATLANTA!!! or even Lisa Clark, the teacher who got knocked up by her student. She at least has a kid and is probably a housewife! I would watch it then.

It is very interesting how many people are willing to condemn this show before even seeing an episode! I am not a “Housewives” franchise afficionado, however, if there is a show that has the potential of casting Black women in a positive light, I’ll give it a shot. I am always interested in a wider portrayal of Black people than what is typically offered on the evening news.

From the descriptions of each woman, it sounds as if they all have interests outside the scope of themselves, which, on the surface, is admirable. We’ll see whether the show plays up their philanthropic bents or if it exploits the public’s commonly-held stereotypes of the “sista-girl”.

Again, the lives of socialites, Black or otherwise, don’t particularly interest me, but I will give this a shot since it’s a slice of metropolitan Atlanta [come on, doesn’t everyone say they’re from Atlanta if they live within 75 miles of downtown?] life that will be broadcast to the world.

Why does every comment about someone that does not agree with you have to be racist? Just for the record, my husband and I are very successful African-American business owners that has had occassion to encounter all of these individuals, except one at different events around Atlanta over the past few years. They are “misfits.” No class at all, they are always seeking attention, and are truly a source “humor”; make for good table conversation. Ask Ms. Snow which boards she sits on, nothing of any substance; very misleading to say the list. She is not associated with United Way, Habitat to Humanity, The Boys and Girls Club, or any other worthwhile humanitarian cause. Certainly she is not on the board of Delta Airlines, Georgia Power, or any major corporation. It is all a bunch of fluff created by an enormous bank account that funds her foolishness.

Kathy, I feel the same way, and I can see that you have evidence to back up anything negative you have to say about them, but there are some people with negative things to say about them based only off the small amount of info they read and photos. You know what that tells me, they are forming a negative opinion based off of skin color. If that’s not racist, I don’t know what racism is. Let’s just say you happened to be up there, hypothetically, they would be saying negative things about you. I’m just saying.

I do not know these ladies, nor have I heard of them in town social circles. But it sounds as though several are hard workers and, hopefully, will reflect a positive light on Atlanta. And I would image the reason the ladies come from outside the city, is that the Old Money ladies avoid potentially crass and embarassing attention.

I agree that the name of the series should not be ” The REAL Housewives of Atlanta. I am not, nor will I ever be a proponent of reality TV shows. Most of these shows, though live, are still scripted because of the “camera”. I admit that most of these women, though married, don’t live in Atlanta, unless you say Atlanta and it’s surrounding areas. Then this could then include Duluth, Sandy Springs, etc. Additionally, some of these women are not full-time Atlanta residents. So we should probably lobby BRAVO to get the criteria of the show tweaked to reflect it’s actual name. Being a housewife, which usually denotes, PTA, soccer, piano, basketball, girlscouts, etc are not what “REAL HOUSEWIVES” of Atlanta in this sense depicts, in the terms that most of us are accustomed to. These women have the option of giving the nanny a day off, or calling in one when they are exhausted from their busy SOCIAL lives and just want to spend time with their husbnads without having to deal with the kids, calling in the limo driver when they don’t want to drive their Escalades, Land/Range Rovers, Lexus, Mercedes, Bently’s, Roll, etc, sleeping in late, eating at an expensive restaurant, and shopping without looking at the price tag, because their live are already fraught with money. The real catalyst to this show or any of these “Real Housewives show” should not be the fame, fortune and social elite calendars, because these events for most of us don’t exist, and if they do, they come with a price that a usual family of four can’t afford. Our invitee list to our family holiday party, would not include a whose who of “Atlanta’s Elite society and other invite SOCIAL ELITES”, but rather a whose who amongst the in-laws, most of which we probably don’t like. I will say, that the individual or collective bashing of these young ladies is a bit overkill, but hey, that falls under “freedom of speech”. Keep in mind that we still do have choices in life, and most of you have already stated that you will not watch this show! Maybe, that’s why BRAVO only did seven shows for this series, to get a feel for what the ratings would be. Maybe, if we temper our comments and redirect our thoughts and give BRAVO some more realistic guidelines about what our society says depicts what the REAL HOUSEWIVES of Atlanta or any city USA really is, they might actually listen!!!!! Just a thought.

Yes, people who know them personally can’t take it serious. Please extend your thinking outside of small Atlanta into the real world. Do any of them own a jet? Off shore accounts? Boy if we could talk about real issues that that really mattter like uh our failing educational system or “parents” who aren’t really parenting at all by looks of some these kids attitudes today, gas prices I mean I could go on. what one must remember this is a “telvision show” that wants ratings anyway the can get them. I’ve read the comments here on this blog about depicting Atlanta. If anyone makes a decision on how people from certain city, region, country, whatever act based on a “reality” show and not “actuality” then let’s just say they probably aren’t well informed to begin with and they have sh*t for brains and the racist comments on this blog are showing the “REAL” Atlanta because there is absoulutely no camera here to “ham it up” for. The comments here show the intolerance people have for each other and how far we have to go. Because the cast happens to be made up largely of African- American women the negative comments flooded this blog both from white and black blogers which is so sad and the people that may know or have known the participants let them be they may not be on your Forbes 500 list of the richest, hll they might not be on anyone’s list of anything what’s does it matter? You are still going to be on here blogging about some other fake reality show tomorrow. Real housewives couldn’t have camera following them around because the camera men would be left in the dust trying to keep up with them. So let this topic die and get back to work or get back to looking at your porn or keep getting angry and thinking the minorities or whatever are taking over America.

If Bravo was looking for Black socialite women. They did not have to pick wives of Football and basketball players. There are plenty of REAL black socialite women that are married to doctors, lawyers’ and executives. These women married an athlete that is not real money. Also just getting your real-estate licenses doesn’t make you a major businessperson. Fashion designer, please putting an S on a black wife beater t-shirt is not original. Learn to sew. Bravo has missed the mark on this one. Just because Atlanta has a high population of blacks does not mean that we want to see the up and coming from Bankhead Courts. I want to see the black professional women who have careers and home responsibilities all in check, all the while still giving back to the social life in Atlanta. Most of these “wives” are ex-wives and single moms, so they should not have been casted.
I won’t be watching- Bravo has hit a new low, and I am sure they will go even lower. Will probally find hispanics wives of Dallas, Texas if they could exploit it for ratings.
