7/1: Steve & Vikki joins B98.5 this morning after 17 years at Star 94
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It only took Vikki Locke five minutes to say it and it cost her $100.
After taking the very first caller at her new gig at B98.5, Locke accidentally uttered “Star 94.”
“I’m going to the Dark Side!” she said, moments after realizing her snafu at 5:05 a.m.
Steve McCoy, her on-air partner with Star 94 for 17 years until November, 2007, chuckled and cued the “Star Wars” music. “Ladies and gentleman,” she said, “I bet $100 any time one of us turns to the Dark Side. It took me five minutes!” (The $100 will go to charity.)
Minutes earlier, McCoy opened the show: “As we were saying before we were so rudely interrupted.” (He told my colleague Rich Eldredge in the print edition today that this was his planned joke and he used it.) Here’s that story.
“It’s the dawn of a brand new day,” he noted. “It’s been like Christmas Day for us.” (He hardly slept last night after eight months off the air.) The show did “Quickies From Vikki” gossip, at 40 minutes after the hour from 5 to 7. During the 5 a.m. hour, they took calls, dubbing it “Alive at Five.” And they thanked Scott Slade over at sister station WSB-AM for making the coffee, something they used to do at Star 94.
And while the team is new (Will Gara remains as producer, Mark Arum continues to do traffic and Jeff Hullinger from WSB-AM now does news), the show sounds very much the same.
CREDIT: Rodney Ho/Staff
After the show, I caught McCoy (above) for a few moments. (Vikki had already been whisked away by sales folks eager to show her off to clients.). “It went remarkably smoothly,” he said. “If we hadn’t said it was the first day, I wonder how many listeners would have noticed.”
Tommy Sullivan, who was part of the morning team for more than a decade at Star 94, came by at 7 a.m. Sullivan was not hired by B98.5 but remains co host at “Atlanta & Company” at WXIA-TV. He will join Steve & Vikki every Thursday at 8 a.m. for an unpaid gig to talk about weekend events. Sullivan’s “Atlanta & Company” co-host and former Dave FM host Holly Firfer also came by.
Ludacris, shamelessly promoting his new restaurant Straits, called in (likely the first time he’s ever been on B98.5). Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, Braves veteran pitcher Tom Glavine and McCoy’s neighbor and comic Jeff Foxworthy also checked in to wish them well. “All is right in the world now that you’re back,” Foxworthy said. Ryan Seacrest will be on tomorrow.
While on Star 94, the show aired from 5:30 a.m. to about 9:45 a.m.. At B98.5, they air from 5 a.m. to about 9 a.m. to accommodate the idea that people are out on the road earlier than ever. (The Morning Mess, like the Regular Guys, Frank & Wanda and the Bert Show, all go to 10 a.m., but Giant Brian, Cletus T. Judd and Zack Tyler also end at 9.)
After taking some callers excited about their return, McCoy at 5:17 a.m. said, “We won’t turn this into a lovefest.”
“But we love it!” Locke said.
“We always consider the listeners as family. We love that kind of feeling,” he said. Then he fumbled over the Web site address. (Hey—this is the first hour of the first day!)
According to that B98.5 Web site,, they are using the Chastain Park Amphitheatre Human Regeneration tour for a “return” concert starring Human League, Belinda Carlisle, Naked Eyes, Flock of Seagulls and ABC August 29. Those ’80s nostalgia acts actually preceded the pairing but who’s keeping track? The pair will also be at the Atlanta Pride Festival on Sunday, with Welcome Back Lunches at the different Ray’s restaurants (dates forthcoming.) The site also references a few new elements to the show. “The Ladies Room,” at 8:05 a.m. Wednesdays, will feature women talking about a variety of topics and Robanne’s Style File will include talk about fashion trends.
The Web site bio conveniently omits the name of their predecessor station, Star 94.
At 5:53 a.m., Vikki mocked Steve for going to Italy and then raving about the… gum.
Steve was naturally unapologetic: “I just noticed the flavor lasted for hours! Why can’t we have this in America?”
“You’re strange,” Vikki said.
She also teased Steve’s dedication to radio. “You will die in a radio station - probably this one!”
Vikki noted she “detoxed” on a beach for two months in North Carolina after she left Star 94 in November.
In his offtime, Steve noted at 7 a.m., he became addicted to the videogame “Call of Duty 4” on the Xbox. “I’m very bad at it,” he cracked. “I’m the only one who has been beaten by the French.”
And Steve & Vikki must be thrilled to have day one endorsements from Jim Ellis Audi as well as Airtran.
It appears they are playing four or six songs an hour, about the same as they did at Star 94, compared to 8 to 10 when Kelly & Alpha were on. So for folks who want less talk and more music and enjoy this style of music, well, you have no place to go for now on the FM airwaves.

Yaawwwnnnnnn. I think they will find B98.5’s audience a little more mature than Star 94’s, and wonder how their routine will play out over time. Of course since I won’t be listening (queue advertisers), I don’t really care.

Change does not come easily at my age. My morning routine revolved around Kelly & Alpha. I miss them soooooooo…
I set my dial to 97.1 on Friday evening. Monday morning, I woke up to Boston and the Eagles. That was fine, except there was no time check, no news, no traffic - no North Star on which to guide my journey through the Sea of Workday Mornings.
I tried DaveFM. Good grief!
I tried the Morning Mess. What a mess!
I tried NPR. Love the “sound” but hate the lack of time checks and a friendly good-morning that really says, “get up!”
I gave a passing thought to going back to B98.5 - but the only good thing there is that Marjorie Coley Davis is gone.
What’s left?
I may have to retire…

I had no problems listening to the show this morning.I am sure the “Morning Mess” is wondering what they should do next. The only thing I noticed listening is there music choice.Could you mix in some current music? The song choices this morning were ages old.Other wise, welcome back!!!

I used to listen to Steve and Vicki every morning on Star 94 during my commute to work. But as the years went by and I got older, it became impossible to tolerate the music. So, much as I enjoyed the banter between Steve and Vicki, I eventually switched to 98.5. I am so glad they are back and on the station with music that I enjoy!

So glad they are back!!! Although I could do without Jeff Hullinger doing the news. Bring Rob Stadler to the team. Much better music than Star94. No they don’t necessarily play the most current music but they have always had more of an oldies format than anything. Again, you can always change the station if you don’t like them. I will probably still listen to Kicks in the am some as well. They grew on me after a while.

I am so thrilled to wake up again to the Steve & Vikki show on B98.5FM. I was kind of in a slump when they left now I have my vigor back! Their banter is family friendly compared to the crass, crude talk on their competitor’s shows which is shameful and a huge embarrasment. Radio hasn’t been the same since they left!I hope they can get great ratings at least they will have a great audience!!!

Great! All the suburban soccer moms now have a radio show to listen to while drifting into the next lane in their hard-to-handle SUVs.
Any male that listens to Steve and Vickki are probably the kind of “man” that ask their wives for permission to bring beer in the house and have a “man room”, least they spoil the house with their “man thingys”.
Steve and Vickki: milquetoast radio at its finest.

Welcome back, Steve and Vikki! You haters, radio execs and advertising “geniuses” out there need to take note: ATLANTA IS MADE UP OF MORE THAN 14-YEAR-OLD BOYS, FRAT GUYS, COUNTRY FANS AND PRETENTIOUS FAUX-SOPHISTICITES! Why do you complain so much when there are only 1 or 2 radio stations that any normal person over 30 can listen to in this town? Meanwhile, you have 500 country, hispanic, clubby (see Star 94 and Q-100), urban and shock-jock stations on the air. It is refreshing to have something like B-98.5 on the air where you can listen to good music from your past, with decent, tasteful announcers. I don’t even know who the crap sings a lot of the garbage on Star 94, Project 9-6-1, Q-100 or any of those stations. And Georgia has about a billion country stations, so why 94.9 went country last year is beyond me. Anyway, thank goodness for Steve and Vikki…. you are an Atlanta TRADITION, having been on the air around here since I’ve been in middle school. Thank you for being a good friend to us in our 30s, 40s and above, and thank you for being true to your listeners. You were missed during your time away and we’re glad you’re back on Atlanta’s radio waves!

I’m a little upset with myself that I missed Steve & Vikki’s RE-debut show this morning. I’m sure it was because I forgot to change the station on my radio alarm clock last night before going to bed…duh. I won’t make that mistake tomorrow. Just as long as B985 keeps me updated on news/traffic (and often), I’ll stick with Steve & Vikki again for a while…maybe permanently. After all, it will be nice listening to my peers again. Can’t relate too well with Star94 any longer. Welcome back, S&V!

I miss Kelly and Alpha. What a rude awakening this morning… even though I knew it was coming (unlike 94.9 “the bull” which changed formats overnight with no warning). I thought I’d give it a chance, but Steve and Vicki were awful. Too much talking - and their voices are boring at that. I wouldn’t mind the talking if their voices were interesting, but they aren’t, and they talk way too much. Please play more music and less talk. I’ll be station surfing for a while now until I can find something that’s not terrible. I wish that a radio station in Atlanta would wise up and broadcast Rick and Bubba - even though they are all talk at least they are funny and interesting to listen to! I even thought I’d be glad that Marjorie Coley Davis was no longer doing the news, but even the news guy was awful this morning. Maybe I’ll take some other posters suggestions and try 97.1 The River in the morning.

I listened to Steve and Vickey for the past 5 years, i was bummed when they left. It wa good to hear them, although they really didnt do anything fun, just talked about vacations. I Like Bert and The Morning Mess for more upbeat fun stuff, I can see why star94 let them go, they sounded like my grandparents!!

Welcome, Steve and Vikki! I stopped listening to Star94 in the morning because you left the show! Your replacements really are a “Mess”. Obnoxious, immature “talent” who should not be allowed on air. Although I’ll miss Kelly and Alpha, it’s nice to have you back.

I am so very happy to hear Steve and Vikki back on the airwaves. They were a major part of my morning routine for over a decade and when they went off the air last November I felt an immense void (I’ll reserve my comments on their appropriately named replacements The Morning Mess!)
Kudos to B98.5 FM for recognizing true quality talent and working quickly to secure these two before they got too far.
Sorry Steve and Vikki - we just don’t want to let you two off the hook that easily! We missed you something terrible and we are so very glad to have you back! Best wishes from a devoted listener!

Why do radio stations feel they need to have a morning show? Do we really need to hear idiots perpetually drivel with out meaning, substance or purpose? The only two stations that don’t have one play the worse music… 95.5 with there synthesized voiced and endless beatbox muscicianless garbage…And the all Elton John and Boston all the time, lets wear out worn out music to the point of nausea, 97.1 The river.
I can’t wait till I get satelite radio.

Why does anyone care about this? If you don’t like them, turn it off, very simple. The fact that you dopes waste your time trashing them on a blog that MAYBE 50 people read shows that you’re more invested than you care to recognize…
Good for them for continuing their careers and being FAR more successful than the rest of you!

The best thing about the Steve and Vikki show this morning was that they were off by 9. Same ole tired s**t. Thought with six months off and knowing they were coming to this station, they could have come up with something fresh. Steve and Vikki = Old and Tired. B98’s new slogan: MORE BANAL TALK, LESS MUSIC!

I don’t listen to radio in my car…haven’t since CD’s came out, but haven’t Steve and Vickie left and come back before? Several times? Or did the stations change?
So confusing….
Bring back Yetta Leavitt and Red Neckerson…now that was good radio….

I am SO glad that Vicki has gotten over that deadly disease that manifested itself at (conveniently) the same time that they were facing being kicked off the air at Star 94. The disease that, if I recall, was MIRACULOUSLY CURED in time for them to get back on the air right after their non-compete period expired.
God works in strange ways, indeed.

Georgia- you have it wrong. Vicki was talking about Steve going to Italy for two weeks and liking the gum. They even started early with a contest regarding the gum. However, to the point - No I will not listen to them after today. Don’t like the mindless celebrity news from Vicki. If I had wanted to hear them on the radio, I would have listened to Star 94, which I didn’t. Hope Alpha and Kelly land somewhere on a station in Atlanta.

First I lose Randy and Spiff and the only oldies station in Atlanta. That was bad enough. So I get comfortable with Kelly and Alpha and now they are gone. We have an oldies station who’s moto is all oldies all day but in the morning I have to either listen to Don Imus (he is old but not an oldie) or now Steve and Vickie. Whoever is making these. decisions, my hope is that Randy and Spiff are reunited and Kelly and Alpha find a new gig in Atlanta. And you suites, that don’t have clue should be the ones looking for jobs.

And off the subject of B98.5. I want to tell Randy whatever your last name is, you stabbed Spiff in the back. He is the one that kept me listening and laughing. But you go on and enjoy your show on AM radio. They got rid of the King in the morning and also Kimmer in the afternoons. Semper Fi, Kimmer you are a true patriot and I miss listening to you on my way home from work. The guy in your time slot, would put me to sleep if I listened to him. After working all day the last thing I want to hear about is credit scores. Good luck to Kelly an Alpha, Spiff, Tom Hughes (the king) and the Kimmer you all added something good to my little world.

I have looked for a replacement since you left Star 94. Very, very tired of listening to those stations who refer to “sailing” and other references to sexual things thinking this is what the audience of today wants. Whether morning or afternoon, family should be kept in mind. It has almost gotten trashy. You guys bring “pep” to B98.5 that has been missing. B98.5 is now my new morning station. As far as the music, I would like to believe it is the station’s choice and not necessary your’s. You just bring it to the table and do a beautiful job. Welcome back to radio! You have been missed regardless of the reason you both left. Fired, arm, or whatever.

Hmmmmm…..Scott Slade is my usual morning go to guy….My alarm is set to radio 750 and so is the car….if the news was overly depressing (or the gas rant too much) I did listen to Kelly and Alpha. I also listened to 104.5 but that woman gets on my nerves! How can you be that dang chipper in the morning! Love the guy on 104.5 though.
Steve and Vicki were the hit of my middle school when they were 99X. Then the hit of the high school at Star 94. The time was 1980s. With most of the music on 98.5 making it the 80’s station I am sure they will pull in the 30’s crowd (we were teens in 80’s) which is the demographic 98.5 wants. I imagine for many listeners it will be a time warp.
No Tommy Sullivan? What a shame…and he is a cute too!
I guess I will continue to flip my dial from Scott Slade (who will remain my main man in the morning) to S & V from time to time….but that is not b/c of them it is just habit.

THANK GOODNESS you are back!! Welcome home Steve and Vikki. I had always been a devout listener at the “dark side”, and so help me I TRIED to listen to the new folks. Do you know they are so hung up on having a younger crowd, that when you call in to comment on the topic at the moment, that they ask you how old you are! When I told them I was 45, they put me on hold, and left me there for over 40 minutes before I hung up! (When I sent a text to them chastising they said it was the screener’s fault.) When I called the next time, I told them I was 22 and got put RIGHT ON. POOH!!!! Did I say THANK GOODNESS YOU ARE BACK!!

If I wanted to hear talk-I’d switch to AM-their routine is old-no new material-so now less talk more music is now MORE nonsense talk and less music. With Today’s music, more talk is better, but not the smae old talk of the senseless surveys and Vickie’s quickies about who cares celebs. Atl radio just stinks.

Has Stupid94 stopped saying “#1 Hit Music Station” yet? They’re a half point behind Q100 and have been behind for 2 quarters now. I say that whoever is the 2nd place T40 station by Dec. 31, 2008 has to buy the 1st place station breakfast and serve it to them on the air.

The blather this morning about gender neutral signs was insipid and stupid. What a display of borderline retardation.
Shall we force creation of gender neutral signs at high cost in lieu of something more worthwhile, like food and medical care for children? Who cares what the road work signs say.
I just had to turn my radio off, for the last time. Morning radio in Atlanta is a waste, even the traffic reports are wasted air; I’ll play CDs from now on.
