7/2: Six Flags pulls advertising off Project 9-6-1 after morning show comments, Jimmy Baron subs for Dave morning show

sixflagslogolowres.jpg

Six Flags Over Georgia has pulled advertising off rock station Project 9-6-1 after the morning show made “insensitive remarks” about Saturday’s accident regarding the teen-ager getting hit by a roller coaster, according to a Six Flags spokeswoman.

Six Flags spokeswoman Hela Sheth sent an email acknowledging this happened but provided no further details. (She did send the urls below of audioclips from the show.) She didn’t know how long Six Flags would stay off the station. (Six Flags typically advertises fairly heavily in the summer on radio and TV.)

No word from Clear Channel Atlanta Operations Manager Clay Hunnicutt, Project 9-6-1 program director Chris Williams or either “Giant” Brian Carothers or his co-host Shaffee. So I don’t know if there will be any punishment.

giant-brian-1.jpg

The Giant Show offers podcasts of its shows. During yesterday’s show, Shaffee and Giant Brian (right) wondered what the park did with the teen-ager’s head. I’m not sure if that’s the point of contention but judge for yourself here.

They also interviewed a company that cleans up crime scenes called Biotrauma here.

Here’s part two with the company Biotrauma.

springsteenandbaronmedium.jpg

-Jimmy Baron (right, with Bruce Springsteen), morning host at 99X from 1994 to 2006, will be subbing for Zakk Tyler and Jane Monzures next week on Dave FM. Most stations will run a “best of” or bring in an existing staff member to cover a morning show when it’s on vacation. So this is somewhat unusual and could potentially be a test run for Baron to replace Zakk, who has been around for about five months. (Baron actually did an overnight audition or two with Dave before Zakk was hired.) A few months before the Morning X was dropped in 2003, Fred Toucher was given a test run. He joined the show in the fall of that year. Baron has not had a radio gig since spring of 2006. He will be joined by Yvonne Monet, also a former 99Xer.

Mike Wheeler, the program director, said he didn’t want to disrupt dayparts by bringing Orff or Margot or Sully in. And Monet is going to re-join Dave FM on a part-time basis. “It’s been awhile since Jimmy had a chance to talk to Atlanta. It’d be good for everybody.”

Wouldn’t this worry Zakk, I asked. “That’s our morning guy. He’s doing great. He thinks it’s fine.”

-Satellite radio fans: another grim story about the prospects for Xm and Sirius..

Stock analysts expect both companies to slash programing costs (23% of total costs) significantly once they combine and the Howard Sterns and NFL’s of the world lose their leverage.

-A fan of Kelly & Alpha has started a Yahoo group called “Save Kelly and Alpha.” Here’s the site if you want to join.

-Mike Mitchell, the last original jock on the seven-year-old Praise 97.5 radio station, left the station in May for personal reasons. A replacement will be announced soon.

I don’t know what they said, either, but maybe they commented on Six Flags’ current TV ads showing a disembodied head (yelling “more flags, more fun!”) superimposed over the image of a speeding roller coaster. I’ve seen those ads and have been slightly amused in a morbid way ever since the incident.

What did Curly say this time? Why Deskins keeps him and Bloomquist around is a big mystery. Oh well….Curly, time to look for a new gig.

Nice article about the merger, but trust me, Howard isnt going to get touched. The real cuts in programming are going to come from the XM side with the Oprahs and Opie and Anthony’s that got paid big and drew nothing. Once this deal is done Satellite radio becomes a real advertising vehicle from a national perspective and that revenue will help big time.

The insensitivity shown by the DJs in regards to the Six Flags tragedy is a clear result of today’s insensitive and desensitized culture. Today’s culture is a result of unsuccessful. (whether if be financially or socially), insecure people who have nothing else to do but criticize, attempt to demoralize and/or sensationalize the negative or tragic situation’s others. The AJC has become a promoter of such in various blogs and articles it chooses to publish. I quit subscribing to AJC recently and now will find another avenue for local news. I listened only to substantiate what I thought it would be only to find it was worse. A family went on what they thought was going to be a fun filled day only to leave without their beloved son. Doesn’t matter what his background was, where he came from or what his thought process was at the time. He lost his life…tragically. To poke fun at it and use it as a source as comedic relief is a reflection of your own insecurities. You’ll be dealt with in some way or form whether it’s publicized or not. I’m sure I’ll never know but when you wonder why something is happening to you…think back.

Kevin did you read the article?? Howard only has a fraction of fans. He is an overpaid has been who does nothing. He can’t even work a whole week. Atleast Opie and Anthony put on a good show and cares about their fans. When they were suspended last year for thirty days over half of XM subscribers cancled their radio and compaies pulled their ads. XM quickly put them back on the airwaves. Plus they don’t nearly make as much as Howard but yet they bring in the most money at XM. XM would be stupid to cut them and bring that piece of crap Howard on. If that happens a LOT of people will cancel their subscription all together.

If they scrap Opie & Anthony I will drop XM the next day. They hve said on air that they have taken pay cuts recently on XM (they also are on 10+ FM stations every morning) Have to say I have never listened to sports on XM, just music, Tom Petty, Dylan, POTUS-08, FOX News, CNN, Deep Tracks, comedy sometimes

The 2 jerk-offs need to be taken off of the air………they are not fit to be doing a radio show. What they said in this spot was uncalled for. And, to even say that you should ask the people in the front row about it was just as uncaring as talking about what happened to the young man. I personally know someone who was there and seen this tragedy happen……whomever was on the front few rows of the train will probably be scared for life because of this. And, this poor family…..god, what they must be going through. It’s heartbreaking. Six-Flags was no way in fault for what happened. This young man & his buddy didn’t use good sense & sadly one of them didn’t live through it. But, hopefully, this will help other kids to not be so stupid. All in all, what these guys said on-air was uncalled for & they shouldn’t be just fined for it……..they should be kicked off of the radio for the rest of their lives. I personally hope that somehow this young mans family finds out about this someway & sues the two of them and the radio station.

The comment made about the Six Flags teenager was just cruel. The radio hosts were very insensitive. I don’t understand why and how they are even allowed to say such things especially considering this incident is still fresh in the family’s mind. I don’t even thing the young man has been buried yet. There should be more of a standard these days. I say they should be punished for such heartless words.

Big deal. So some knucklehead made an “insensitive” comment about a story in the news. Anyone who listens to 96.1 knows what to expect. If it isn’t your cup of tea, change the channel. There is no right not to be offended.

Warped… good observation about the commercial.

My comment is about the satellite merger. I’ve ALWAYS thought both companies were incredibly stupid to pay such unbelievable amounts for not only Stern, but for all the other sports, news, etc. exclusives. Maybe I’m in the minority, but the reason I got XM years ago was for the MUSIC. Since then I have listened to NO local radio. And I’ve been extremely happy with the stations I listen to. Not once have I listened to anything else but the music channels. If after the merger the uniqueness of the music offered becomes like Atlanta radio, you can rest assured I will cancel. So, if both companies had stayed with the MUSIC that they started with, both would be in fine shape. You could see this coming as soon as Howard was signed. Greed. So many of our countries problems rest on that one word.

Looks like Stern will be back on terrestrial radio soon. Of course, he will be making less than the $38 Million per year that El Lushbo will be paid on his new contract.

Of course these two should not be fired, I mean it wasn’t like they made fun of his ethnicity.Anything said on-air now is acceptable as long as you don’t mention race. Had they done that, now that would call for an immediate firing, marches and a public flogging. Right Imus?

Great to know you love Opie and Anthony. Last time I checked they were not repsonsible for explosive growth of subscibers to Sirius. Before Howard,…1 mil, now, over 7 mil. Granted not all came for Howard but a lot did. The music on Satellite is not even an issue here. That is far superior to anything you get in your car. The sports, and personalities you get with the various music and comedy is what makes this the best choice if you can afford it. PS, Arbiton recently rated Satellite and Howard and Bubba were number 1 and 2 by a long shot over any other channel, or personality. When the merger goes through and you can ala carte your service his audience will only go up as will the total listner base which is going to increase advertising revenue. That is what is going to save the day.

Personally, I’m happy with my ipod in the car. After they took 99x off the air, I stopped listening to the radio completely.

And Jimmy Baron isn’t enough to bring me back to the radio. And I never have to listen to Howard Stern. Or Limbaugh. And I don’t have to pay a monthly membership fee.

I happen to think the Giant Show is funny! How can there comments be considered insensative when everybody thought “what a d** this kid is for jumping two fences”. Would it be okay to make remarks about how teriible the schools are in South Carolina? I guess the word “prohibited” or “danger” are high school words.

So the article says “only a fraction of Sirius listeners listen to Stern” so that must be true.

Trust me, a lot more than “a fraction” are listening. 9 times out of 10 when Stern and the gang talk about something, within a few hours that item or topic jumps to the top (or near the top) of google’s “most searched items” list. My guess would be 60% or better of Sirius listeners are listening to the Stern show.

The segment didn’t offend me because the person who died did something very stupid. However, I have to say that radio has reached the “bottom feeder” level. There are just a bunch of scum sucking people doing radio today. In the old days real music reigned, but now it’s been replaced with garbage. When will the zombie masses wake up and yell ENOUGH! It’s clearly evident that these two so called dj’s are not that at all - they’re complete rejects that climbed out of some coporate radio sewer. Coporate raido has deemed the populace stupid so all they have to to is market to the lowest common denominator to get sales. WAKE UP PEOPLE! FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR AZZ WILL FOLLOW!!

Some people deal with tragedy through humor. It’s grossly unfair for those who do not to take offense on behalf of someone who is too dead to cars and a family that might find solace in humor.

These proxy offended are the same people who will block your driveway with their car because, “I’m just gonna be a minute”. They’ll push in front of you in line because, “Oh, I’m so late, excuse me”. They’ll buy a house next to a city park, organize, and get the park, for all the rest of us, shut down because OUR activities are degrading the park while their’s are not.

We’s all be better off if these people decided to go stand under the batman coaster and see for themselves just what happened.

What a couple of inhumane @ssholes. To banter about such a tragic situation shows a basic lack of humanity and decency.
