Project Runway: Tablecloth time

The high: OMG, no one’s calling anything “fierce.”

The low: Only AmEx cardholders have access to “Project Runway’s” online post-show.

Just when we thought the high cost of, well, everything, would derail our plans to have a fabulous little summer, just when we thought our only Heidi Klum sighting till fall would be on her QVC jewelry special (not that we bought anything … this time) “Project Runway” returns for an early exit from Bravo TV.

Right: Heidi Klum moonlighted on QVC this summer. (AP Photo/Starpix, Dave Allocca)

Thank you, “Project Runway,” for feeding us a nice dollop of fashion in an otherwise humdrum summer.

“PR” may be leaving Bravo with a bang. Bigger guest stars (Natalie Portman, Brooke Shields, RuPaul) and grittier contestants (more tattoos! Dirtier hair!) this season, yes, but a few same-old challenges. Gristedes? I wish they would just make a plain old dress and be done with it, already.

Designer gimmick: “Suede” refers to himself as “Suede.”

The winner: Kelli Martin, smartly accessorized shop owner from Columbus, Ohio — not to be confused with Kellie Martin, adorable actress of “Life Goes On” and “ER” fame. Gotta say, we loved Kelli’s stained skirt and burnout bustier. For innovation, she may be the new Michael/Mychael Knight.

The loser, Jerry Tam: We weren’t completely revolted by his sci-fi-nurse getup, but we thought the rubber gloves were actually funny. Does he not get credit for finding the one wearable item in a supermarket?

Well, in these uncertain economic times, we’re glad fashion made from stuff is coming into its own. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have mop-heads to braid.

What are your thoughts on Season 5, Episode 1, of “Project Runway”?

i’m glad to have my tee-vee friends back! tableclothes notwithstanding, i think these designers have skills, and can create lovely, detailed pieces. i have mixed emotions about this season, though. i’m simultaneously repulsed and excited by the notion of tim gunn saying, “holla atcha boy.” jumping the shark or irony?

Wow… I totally missed the show! I had no idea it was back on. So this is the last season on Bravo? Is it going to another chanel, or is it ending its run?

It was great to see Heidi, Tim and the crew again. (It’s also great to see this blog return so we can dish!)

Alas, I was underwhelmed by the latest batch of designers. Some of their outfits were super ugly, regardless of the material. And I don’t want to hear any new catch phrases. ‘Fierce’ covers the entire series.

I agree with you, Faith. Let’s see these folks design a basic black dress! THAT would be fierce!

I can’t wait for next week. When the teaser showed Tim Gunn disapprovingly say, “It’s a teradactyl in a gay Jurassic Park” I thought I was going to fall out of my chair laughing. They just can’t write this kind of entertainment!!

If I had a dollar for every friend who was thrown by the new time, I’d be rich (if $5 is rich). I’m definitely concerned about A) Recycling old challenge themes, B) Recycling the idea of catch-phrases (be gone, Blayne), and C) Too many tatts and not enough talent. But first episodes always seem to leave bad first impressions. Thank God Stella got spared, though: Punk rockers need a second chance. I’ll keep watching. (Sucker.) And yes, I thought Kelli’s was best by far, with the cup thing a worth second place. Oh, and I’ll keep reading. Love the dish!

Naffy - according to the commercials on TV it’s moving to LA on the Lifetime channel next year.

To quote Tim, I have some concerns… The quality/skills of the contestants seems to be slipping. I thought that the brief retrospective from season one showing several of the first season’s outfits really highlighted how sad most of this week’s offerings were.

Can we jump ahead to the final three now?

My favorite thing on PR is when Tim explains the challenge. I was a little surprised that Jerry Tam was eliminated and not Stella. I don’t see uber-Goth chic as the way to survive on the runway.

Lets hope season 5 is full of cat fights, Webster worthy buzz words and nervous breakdowns.

The perma tan guy is a total coke head, every time the camera went on him he did a coke addict sniffle.

OMG, Greg! I TOTALLY thought the same thing about that guy! I’m so glad someone else noticed—none of my friends paid attention to that! But I hope that someone asks him about that. The constant sniffle and his actions can only lead me to think that he is an addict. (Of course, as sad as it may be, he’d fit right in with much of the industry…)

The coke-tan-head’s design was hideous. The only reason they kept him on was for entertainment value. Ditto for Ms. Biker Babe. The guy who went OUT didn’t lose on his merit. He was too kind and boring. I found it to be a bummer of a way to begin a new season. Where’s the integrity, Tim?

For one thing, Tim doesn’t have anything to do with the actual judging, but I agree that Jerry’s wasn’t the worst. The trash bags thrown over that girl’s shoulders and stitched on the sides were actually insulting, not to mention that for the majority of the challenge she just sat there hemming and hawing about her material before throwing something together. It’s clear to me that the producers felt she needed to be kept on the show because of her potential to be more dynamic. Same goes for Tanboy, who, by the way, doesn’t even look human. He looks like a weird alien puppet boy who was sent to try to emulate human behavior and is being remotely controlled.

I quit watching america’s top model because they were holding on to the more “entertaining” or “controversial” contestants at the cost of the more “talented” ones. I hope it does not happen with PR, as I agree that the asian dude’s American Psycho effort was more imaginative than the garbage bag garb and more coherent than the confusing mess orange-coke-head made.
