Project Runway: Ugly Brown Fabric
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The high: The realization that in a season of strong personalities, nobody on “Project Runway’s” Season 5 annoys me — yet. Surely I must have mellowed in my old age?
The low: The misconception that brown is ugly.
Tonight’s designers seemed to knock on the color brown. Or are we just too sensitive? (Ever since our days spent in the tutelage of really old nuns have we been fascinated by brown. Back then, the nuns wore brown; our uniforms were brown; the entire school seemed to be festooned in brown ribbons and craft paper.)
We prefer to think Joe’s, Leanne’s and Wesley’s designs (below) goofed because of the thin, ripply satin, and not the color.

But what about the “green” part? We couldn’t tell what difference “eco-friendly” fabric made in this challenge.
The winner: Suede, whose innovation with champagne satin (right) won him a fan in actress and guest judge Natalie Portman.
The loser: Forget the dress. Didja see Wesley’s shorts? Leave the legs to the models, Stork Boy.
We also looooved neurotic, nasal-y Stella’s one-armed, lace-up sheath, but thought it was poorly styled. It needed some Doc Martens, not Mary Janes, and tougher hair, not the Jerry Hall special (which is to say, lopsided).
Do you agree?
By the way, Nina Garcia, recently shown the door at Elle (because we’re not above shameless gossip, here’s what Gawker.com had to say on the matter), has a new title of “editor at large,” but that is apparently a temporary situation. She reportedly has signed on Marie Claire’s dotted line, and will take the reins as fashion director in September.
We haven’t read Marie Claire since, well, the last time we wore brown pleated skirts and saddle oxfords, but we’re still willing to give it a shot. Best of luck, Nina.

Excellent point: Where the heck WAS the green in this challenge??? Wesley deserved the boot. (Dull designer, dull work.) I was glad to see Korto stay, cuz I think she can do better (just like Stella, who rebounded nicely).

Ooh no, I did not love Stella’s dress. I thought she should have got the boot on the first episode. Too bad. I loved Kenly’s dress last night the most, since I love that classic Hollywood style she’s got going. I’m pulling for her. And Suede’s horrid use of referring to himself in the third person didn’t annoy you?

I was surprised at the judges’ reactions about Stella’s dress. It was okay, I guess, but it was not at all what the client asked for!! In other seasons, better designers have been kicked off for being so stubborn. Stella, in my opinion, needs to go.

Stella definitely should have gone home in week 1. YUK—I don’t like her.
Suede’s third person is somewhat annoying but I loved his dress. It seemed unfair to me that the models picked the material but I guess that is why it is called a “challenge”. Mr. Tanning Bed annoys the living daylights out of me! Love the show!!

I hated Stella’s dress! Short and laced up the side….trashy!! And btw, Marie Claire is a fabulous mag! I’ve been a subscriber for 3 years now and along with Glamour its my favorite magazine. It has great fashion and interesting articles!

Count me in as another person surprised by last night’s show. The judges’ reaction to Stella’s dress startled me, in particular. I didn’t think the dress captured anything, except maybe an 80s vibe. Definitely want her GONE…she’s rapidly putting me off watching the show. Her negativity just sucks the air out of the room. Suede and Tanner Boy are also annoying, but at least they really believe in what they’re doing and are giving their all. Kenly’s my fav so far, and I hope that Korto will bounce back.

Not feeling the love this season. I really wish Tim could stop folks from using the same material and/or concepts. First the tablecloths, now the “tortured” brown fabric. ENOUGH! I did not like Stella’s dress, though I think she did a fine job for the target audience she identified last week. All I could think of when I saw Suede’s dress was Eddie Van Halen’s guitar. Kenley’s dress was my favorite. (BTW, did anyone else notice that Bravo didn’t count their results from last night’s poll correctly? Suede’s third-person affectation won 47% of the votes, but Tanorexia was declared the “crazier” annoyance, though only 37% of viewers voted for it. Never mind that they compared more than two items, which should have made one the “craziest.”)

Stella: Joey Ramone is asking that his estate gets a cut of any gains earned from using his image, act, and style. Keep up the act, it’s the only thing keeping your there. Bitching about having to make a cocktail dress on Project Runway? Do years of meth make you that short-sighted? Tanorexia: some of us are old enough to remember “the weasel”. Pauly Shore requests executive-producer credits for your act. Suede: I gotta admit, you hit that one out of the park. Wesley: You deserved the boot and eternal unemployment in “style” for thinking that Brooks Brothers is a “fashion” “style”. Go drown your sorrows with a Sam Adams at a cigar bar.

I did notice the incorrect polling. Another thing I hate is the current trend in using “-orexia” on the end of everything — especially since it’s used as a way to express TOO MUCH of something. What exactly do anorexics have too much of?
Stella’s dress definitely did not deserve to be in top three, especially not when Terri’s was SO fabulous. I thought she should have one. I can see why the designers in particular liked Suede’s dress, but to me it looked exactly like the remnants of my baby blanket. Trust me, this is not a good thing.
Tanboy didn’t annoy me quite as much this go-round, mostly because I thought him making fun of Stella was pretty freaking hilarious. I looked for the signs of coke-headedness that everyone was talking about last week, and I have to say I didn’t see them.
One last note: I’m really sick to death of Bettie Page lookalikes.
