7/30: Preview of “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Kristen Gates talks about new gig, “Baby Borrowers” ends
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

(l-r) Lisa Wu Hartwell, DeShawn Snow, Kim Zolciak, NeNe Leakes, Sheree Whitfield.
The five women from the already-maligned Bravo spinoff reality show “Real Housewives of Atlanta” have done some press, including Entertainment Tonight. I’ll talk to them closer to air date in September.
In the meantime, here’s a little teaser from the women themselves via video.
NeNe Leakes: “I know the viewers are going to love, love, love the real housewives of Atlanta.”
Lisa Wu Hartwell: “We have a lot to offer. We have the music scene. We have the film scene. We have fashionistas. We have athletes. We have everything. It’s hot. It’s hot in Atlanta!”
Leakes: “Being in the South is totally different, just being in the South. The women in New York are wound a little tight. Orange County? They were fun. We’re funner.”
“More fun,” corrected DeShawn Snow.
Snow then added: “We’re five strong dynamic women. We have very strong personalities. We know exactly what we want. You put five people together like that, there will be a couple of disagreements. At the end of the day, we’re like a family, like sisters.”
Show starts Sept. 16, but there’s a 30-minute preview tonight at midnight (or, technically, tomorrow) right after “Project Runway.”
-Kristen Gates, formerly of Star and Kicks 101.5, said she joined 94.9/The Bull earlier this month with part-time/weekend fill-in status in hopes of getting a full-time gig. She didn’t realize how quickly it would happen.
Thanks to Jamie Massey’s move to Phoenix, Gates has taken over as the female sidekick to Cledus T. Judd. Although she started last week without Cledus, he returned Monday. She knew him going back to the days when he would visit her in the studios at South 107 in Rome and they’d see each other at roundtables and awards shows. “He was one of the first people to call me the day the firings happened” at Kicks Feb. 29.
“I’ve known her forever,” Cledus said after the second day they started working together at the Bull. “It’s like having an old friend in there. When I got the job at the Bull, she was supportive, wished me the best. I never thought I’d be able to work with her. She’s the consummate professional— funny, obnoxious, makes my job easier. She is definitely one of the guys.”
Kristen said being at the Clear Channel building “is like a breath of fresh air. It’s such a healthy environment.” (That is perhaps the first time I’ve ever heard someone say that!)
“Slam and I are here to guide the show and deal with the business aspects,” she said. “All Cledus has to do is be entertaining and be himself.” The show’s new producer, Todd Veal, used to work with Rhubarb.
In just two days, she said, “it’s been a very smooth transition. We’ve instantly gelled.”
- NBC’s “Baby Borrowers” ends with a snoozer of an episode tonight with the teens learning from some seniors. Here’s the Buzz item I sent over to Richard after talking to the two Dunwoody teens:
The reality show stirred controversy because it featured parents giving up their babies and toddlers to teenagers they had never met.
Some critics said it would damage the kids psychologically. The two Dunwoody teens who took part in the show, which ends its six-episode run tonight at 9 p.m.(7/30), pooh-poohed this line of argument.
“It was literally safer than day care,” said Austin Trizzino, 19, a rising sophomore at Auburn University. “Any given time, you had 10 people watching a single kid. There was an EMT there.” In the end, nobody needed the EMT, he added.
Neither he nor his girlfriend during the show, Kelly Young, now 20 and a rising junior at Auburn, regretted taking part, even though Kelly went into an emotional tizzy a couple of times. She doesn’t even recall why she got mad the second time and started screaming at Austin in a tirade so over the top, E! comedy show “The Soup” mocked it last week.
“We were extremely stressed out,” Kelly said. “We had been questioning our relationship before we went on the show. During the interviews [with producers,] we were kind of egged on.”
The show was taped a year ago. Austin and Kelly broke up, got back together, then broke up again three weeks ago. Such is life with young couples. Both remain friends and agree: No kids anytime soon for either of them.
“I learned I was a lot more patient than I expected,” Austin said. “But I also learned I like being young and having the freedom to sleep eight straight hours.”

So excited for Kristin.
And SO embarrassed to say that those “ladies/Housewives” are from Atlanta!

5 women from Atlanta and only one is white? Are we trying to make up for the fact that all the other Housewives shows have been all white? This doesn’t seem to represent the real Atlanta…except that everything in the real Atlanta revolves around the Rap and athlete scene, so maybe it is realistic. Just what we need…another reason to make Atlanta look like that the trashy city it is.

Another pathetic attempt by this poser sewer city to compete with the genuine articles. It’s wonderful that we have BET, black music channels, black congress clubs, black beauty contests, black black black…and now an 80% black housewives show demonstrating to the world how lame we are.
I suspect that our scholastic rankings will only be improved by these wonderful example of Atlanta elite….I can’t wait to hear how they mangle the language…

This drivel is pure garbage (just like that “Desperate Houswives” crap). This is more mindless fluff meant to distract the lemmings from the agenda of the Globalist Elite & their traitorous puppets on “Crapitol sHill” (ie - open borders/amnesty, the North American Union/SPP, the private Fed & their fiat currency, supressed oil prices & ever-growing government spending & enpowerment)! This standard “reality” TV/”Hollyweird” fodder is also designed to undermind morals by glorifying vanity, hedonism & materialism. Americans need to awaken and realize they’re being (intentionally) duped into a slumber by the Elite and their controlled “Sheepletainment” industry!
I suggest concerned American read David Kapelian’s outstanding expose *The Marketing of Evil to understand the agenda & tactics of The Elite & “Hollyweird”…

WELL DON’T YOU THINK IT IS TIME FOR SOME BLACK HOUSEWIVES. NO ONE COMPLAINED WHEN THEY WERE ALL WHITE SO DON’T COMPLAIN NOW. EITHER YOU WILL WATCH IT OR YOU WILL NOT. REGARDLESS IF YOU WATCH IT OR NOT, I GUARANTEE YOU THEY WILL HAVE HIGH RATINGS. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT EVERYTHING AND GET A LIFE.

Calm down Meka, don’t call Jesse Jackson just yet, hold your horses. This same crap was shown about Orange County and New York and the white women came accross as a bunch of dimwitted , self-indulgent airheads. I don’t see this lot as being much better. It’s not about race, it’s about content. The one in the bad blonde wig in the middle with the hideous purple dress looks white, but who cares. I’d rather chit barbwire than watch this junk but Meka you can watch it all day and night and no one will give a hoot.

I’m glad they’re bringing attention to Atlanta. It’s time people realized all the cool things going on here. And good pub is good for business.
I don’t understand why it’s supposedly “already-maligned.” Typical national media, I guess. They just can’t get over themselves and give the ATL the credit it has earned.

Whites will watch the show to laugh at the black women. No one from Buckhead would ever be on this show unless they were already an outcast. This show will be canceled early. The show is not a real showing of Atlanta. Blacks are 50% of the women but we have people from many countries here so this show is doomed. It will hurt all of us!

Tori, I SO agree with you: the premise of the show is pitiful; all these people (like the other reality TV folks of whatever color) are egocentric (and, I add, intellectually vacant). I, too, wish it all would go away. I’m embarassed for Atlanta these days.
THAT SAID…”Meat”, you need to stop your racist rant. MY issue is not that this show is about mostly Black women, it’s just I hate this celebrity/wannabe celebrity culture.
White people have much more drivel on TV—and on the major networks—so check your own stable before you cast racist comments and aspersions. There would never have been a need for any “Black” this or that, if racist white folks hadn’t segregated and been so arrogant that even schools, housing, pageants, TV shows, hiring of news anchors, TV networks, etc., were for WHITES ONLY. Learn the history, “Meat”head.

I don’t care what color the ATL “housewives” are, the fact remains that none of them appear to actually be housewives or live in the city.
I hope no one watches this catastrophe in the making.

First of all, how does this represent ATL, when it is only 1% of the population that can live this way? It would be refreshing if these ladys had some sort of realization that they are a part of a whole. (the planet) Their little parties and glamour just feed negativity into a population that can never attain that due to economic situations. However even if they attained such wealth they would feel empty just like these women feel. Great wealth comes from within. They will only have their wealth during this lifetime. Hope they are prepared to let go.

*Another word of advise to everyone…take a break from the “boob-tube” and do some reading. The “Sheeplevision” is primarily designed to (further) dumb down our society (along with video games & “ragazines” like People/”Sheeple”, Cosmo, Maxim, etc)!

Oh my, I am in complete shock at the ignorant comments made at the begining of this blog. Who do you think you are passing judgement on these ladies, whether they are black or not ! The color of their skin has nothing to do with what type of appeal this show will drive for ATL, other than to show that we are diverse, and willing to show it ! It is 2008, and if that is the way you feel about Atlanta and the people who live here, then you disgrace this city; maybe you don’t belong here.
Actually, maybe you should attempt to be a friend to the black community, and you will see how truly ignorant you are.

It is just unfortunate that anytime outsiders see Atlanta it is in reference to black culture. This makes Atlanta look like it is not a diverse area. There are many different walks of life here and typically only one segment of the population is represented. Peoples perception of Atlanta from my experience is “is it only black people there?”

Unbelievable. The racism is unbelievable. If you don’t like it…don’t watch it dummy! It’s that simple. I watched Orange County and NY editions and so what…they were white. I like crazy reality shows…SO WHAT!!! Many thought that was trash. So what’s the big deal if they are black? “They” always want to talk about playing the race card but “they” are the first ones to say something RACIST! Just crazy people. Leave…go some place that everyone thinks JUST LIKE YOU!!! It’s too late for Atlanta honey!

This is to ‘Who Cares’…you tell Meka to “calm down, don’t call Jesse yet”…blah, blah, blah. First of all, that was a stupid remark…maybe you need Jesse. And furthermore, tell ‘your peeps’ to CALM THE “F” down. The first thing out of there pink mouth was racist…now I’ll take the same road as they ALWAYS do. They can’t help themselves…I know, but you’re not getting off that easy with your dumb azz comment either.

take the shallow mindlessness of the earlier versions and add vacuous racist culture and it is unlikely you will get “publicity” as a writer mentioned, merely notoriety.
Maligned across the nation for what is obviously the culture and world view of the people in that picture-celebri-wanna-be. Four thousand dollar purses carried about by people to drunk or high to give a coherent comment.
Alpharetta? Is that all we have? Bummer.
tip to the producers: you just make it to get to the third show with the manufactered drama and issues and let one of them refer to another with the “n” word - you will drive ratings through the roof!! When Jesse gets involved, the media starts their bruhaha and millions tune in to see it replayed ad naseum they will hardly notice you have no plot, rhyme or reason for putting out this trash. Other than to sell ads.

To Everyone who has commented… this show will bring people in and allow them to form thier own opinion on if it’s worthy of thier time to watch. As for media coverage of ow ATL is represented, I know personally there are better people who could be on this show then the ‘nitwitted’ ones chosen. This is a show about controversy and we are already fullfilling that by how the responses are. Personally, I won’t watch it, but Iam entertained by everyone’s comments! Happy Trails!

SAD….I can’t believe Bravo nor can I believe the cast…This does sum of the perception of ATL. However. there are a lot of professionals here in ATL and it surrounding cities…Cursing, Strippers( regardless if it was pole dancing lessons), Shout outs to gold diggers, mystery lovers buying cars(I hope she does not sell butt), Now black women are looking down on hire help as the cameras show a black lady ironing clothes..WOW, I am sure someone in Mrs. Snow or Mr. Snow family once cleaned someone’s house before…just shameful….NeNe( Just WoW), Sheree( Another WOW) they were tight before the show…WOW.

OH, the sad thing about the show tonight was that it made black women here in Atl look superficial( which some are), Ghetto, ignorant and just plain stupid….Just Shameful Bravo!! I tell you they are pulling out all the tools for Obama election… New York Magazine, Being Black in America, and now Housewives of ATL…WOW. I would like to have seen Brooke Jackson from Atl on the show and a few others that reflects the elite of ATL. Oh, my bad…They were to educated and had class…This could not have been about ratings…I refuse to believe it…I am curious to see how many people will continue to tune in…I see why it aired at midnight. Just Foul. Hopefully it will get better…or worse. i can’t wait to read Sandra Rose and TMZ. PS Carie- You were right…To Everyone who has commented… this show will bring people in and allow them to form thier own opinion on if it’s worthy of thier time to watch.
Also, just an fyi NeNe is being herself…she is not as loud as they protraying her and she is a good mother. Her husbad probably love her more than the rest of the crew…this I knoe Also, she does have a caring heart. I am surprised that Sheree did not talk about her relationship with Charles Oakley…I am made at Sherre, she talked abour her girl NENE like a dog…not cool. Lastly, she maybe Mary J Blige sister for real…stay tuned

This so is a joke. The only wealthy black people in Atlanta are not athletes married to uneducated women with no class. Eric Snow’s wife should have the governess give her some gramme lessons. Sheree looks much older than 38 and she’ll need a lot more than 7 figures to maintain that life style. Nene is straight ghetto. No other way to describe it. I am truly disappointed.
