8/26: TBS orders up new series “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
TBS has ordered a new sitcom “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” after the success of 100 episodes of “House of Payne.”
The station is a bit more cautious this time, ordering just 10 episodes for January 2009. Then again, the release implies that this 10-episode run of “Meet the Browns” could mean more episodes forthcoming if it does well.
According to a press release:
“Meet the Browns” stars David Mann as Leroy Brown, a character who earlier this year was featured in Perry’s hit film of the same name. He has also appeared in several episodes of “House of Payne” on TBS. Perry’s new series begins after Brown inherits a dilapidated house from his deceased father.
Angela Bassett, who was in the original film, won’t be joining the new crew.
“House of Payne” has 26 new episodes set starting in December with production beginning in September.
-97.1/The River is testing four veteran DJs to replace Lexie Kaye in mornings: former 96rock/Eagle 106.7 jock Steve Mitchell, traffic gal Paula Phillips, former 96rock/Z93 jock Kaedy Kiely, and former 96rocker Tim Rhodes.
Mitchell does voiceover and production work since he was ousted from Eagle when Citadel blew up the country station in February in favor of oldies.
Phillips used to be a jock in Athens and other cities but has spent several years doing traffic for the River and other Cox stations.
Kaely, who worked for more than 20 years in Atlanta radio until Z93 was killed for Dave FM in 2004, has done other ventures including a soft-drink company and a board game version of her “Rock Riddles.”
Rhodes, who was let go from 96rock when that station died at the end of 2006 after more than a decade there, works at Bulldog 103.7, an Athens rock station also owned by Cox Radio.
Chris Miller, program director, said management will make a decision next week on who will get the job.

I think Tyler Perry is biting off more than he can chew with this added sitcom. The other is barely tolerable, although admittedly I do watch in an effort to support him. I think he should stick with movies and plays, which he does extremely well. And, perhaps work on the improving the format of his current sitcom before jumping into another.

I don’t watch it but I have to listen to white people at work try to replicate the stupid jokes and terminology in the office because they think that I think it will be funny!!! House of Payne is a horrible show and this next one will be even worse. TBS must be run by morons! I am black and cannot believe the quality of this stupid show. The acting,the writing all way below the standards of quality TV. A cable network,TBS, is the only place it would be show. They are really losing the respect of their TV viewing audience. His characters further stereotype Black people as ignorant, uneducated, and backwards in thinking. I have some family members just like the ones in his shows, and it is not at all funny to see this type of behavior displayed in real life. It is easier for Mr. Perry to sell a show that characterizes Blacks in the way of The Browns versus a Harvard graduate (like The Cosby Show). As stated in one of the previous blogs, Mr. Perry is known around the world and so is his characterization of Black people. And we wonder why Black people are treated so poorly. People who have never interacted with Blacks have the misfortune of using this type of medium as a gage for who we really are. As Black people, until we demand better of each other we can never expect the rest of the world to view us any differently in real life or on stage.

Andrew, Just voicing my opinion in regards to the television show. I did not degrade Mr. Perry personally, I like his movies. I just think the TV show does not measure up. Have watched it on a few different occasions trying to warm up to it. I will watch again hoping it gets better, but for now it is not in my TV viewing rotation. I just think the “father Payne” acts to ignorant as a black father figure on TV in 2008, not 1978. My own opinion.

Cara, That’s Right! You never know what may be happening through this show. I know its hard to believe. In case you didn’t know, God works through people. Have you ever gone to church and been inspired by what the minister/ priest may have said that it caused you to change? Well God spoke to you through the minister. Andrew, I’m not going to battle you about God. I’m just squeezing through the gates as it is. I don’t relate to the show or Tyler Perry’s humor. It’s not funny or entertaining to me. I also feel that is makes black society look ignorant as a whole.

The movie is about the shucking and jiving that writers will succumb to all in the name of personal success. Sounds a lot like Tyler Perry these days. Well, it’s like Spike Lee said, “If I want to do a film about coonery and buffoonery, I’ll get plenty of financial support.”
Although I have an idea as to why, it seems Mr. Perry mainly focuses on an aspect of black family life that I’ve yet to experience. Which is why I don’t support any of his films or TV shows.

I am happy for Tyler for his accomplishments and I am gald that he has another sitcom coming out. I loved Meet the Browns and I know that I will enjoy the TV version. And to you CARA, it takes a empty-headed, thoughtless person like yourself to hate on someone like Tyler Perry because of his success. I dont have an issue with anyone becomming successful, but I am tired of this Tyler Perry fellow. I dont watch shows on TBS, but I know of his work, and it has gotten old. Im sure he appeals to the black folk out there, and thats ok, but Im not black. Please dont let a new show have anything to do with Atlanta. Im a native Atlantan, and am sad to say this city has absolutely “gone to hell”. There is not another city in America that can boast being the “chocolate city” in comparison to Atlanta. I now know why so many folks are moving up north of the city, because they like the demographics much better. Maybe someone can answer my question, why does every heavy set black woman driving an suv too slowly have to yak on the cellphone when they should be driving over in the right lane?

In today’s world we all have choices. Some like to watch House of Payne, other’s do not. Those who don’t, get that little box with the numbers on it and change the station. I can’t believe this blog is getting this serious over a sitcom. Yes you have the right to voice your opinon, but why down a person or station becausse of their sucess or choices that they made. This isn’t about being black or white or even being gay. In fact who cares, it’s about what someone choices to watch on TV. It’s simple, if you don’t like it chnage the station and move on.

There are some interesting comments here. Am I a fan of Tyler Perry, yes. Do I watch House of Payne, yes. But to be honest, I watch just to support Perry and his work as a black man. Until mainstream networks create more black shows, and less reality shows, then we would we have something to choose from. House of Payne is not as funny as other shows I’ve watched but it is better than Reality TV like I love New York and Flava Flav. Whenever anyone, black or white, gets a chance to get their piece of the American pie, I rejoice. If you dont like the show, then like others, why not just turn the channel.

again its interesting that most of the people who are complaining about h.o.p. are the ones watching it. i enjoy tp plays and a couple of his movies. however i watched 10min of the first episode of h.o.p. and DID NOT like it. and guess what i di…I CHANGED THE CHANNEL AND NEVER WATCHED IT AGAIN! how simple is that. for you to complain about it, you must be spendin a lot of time watchin it…thats called common sense, if you dont like something, dont subject yourself to it. and for dard…your comment about fat black female drivers on the phone not in the right lane is just IGNORANT! atl is known for its traffic and bad drivers of ALL RACES! ive seen speedracers black, white, asian, and others on their cellphones driving crazy as hell. ive also seen those same people driving slowly in the “fastlane” while on the phone. bad driving, and bad driving habits is not a RACE issue and you should know that from watching the news daily. there are accidents and pileups here on a regular and guess what…they not all fat black women.

It’s a shame that many of you will call somebody jealous of Perry just because they don’t like his work. It amazing how some resort to name calling just because someone disagrees with them and that is why we cannot engage in meaningful dialogues in Black America. And those of you who say that those who do not like his work should change the channel just don’t get it. Most of those who don’t like it have seen it and changed the channel. Let’s face it, the shows are simplistic, of low quality, no longer funny, and has canned endings. Hmmmm. They are just like many of you who blast others because they don’t like what you like.
