9/5: JaQuitta Williams leaving WSB-TV

13881450.jpg

WSB-TV has confirmed that reporter and weekend anchor JaQuitta Williams is leaving the station next week. Her final anchoring day is Sunday. Her final reporting day is Sept. 12.

She has been at the TV station since 2004 and been in the TV business for about 20.

I got a hold of Williams at about 3 p.m. Friday. She said her recent bout with breast cancer was a factor in her departure.

“When I came back from my cancer journey in January, I was different,” she said. “I wanted my life to be more enjoyable. I wanted to do other things.”

While thinking about staying or going, she looked for signs. She found two: her Blackberry stopped working, then her laptop was stolen out of the WSB-TV van while she covered a church fire.

Ultimately, she had nothing but good things to say about WSB itself and was appreciative that they let her tell her breast cancer story on air. (Essence magazine has a story about her in October’s issue.)

Williams said she has a new job lined up but with respect to WSB, won’t reveal what it is until after she leaves.

Better yet, she noted: “I am cancer free. My last mammogram in August was clean. I’m in a wonderful place. I’m so excited!”

According to her online bio, her favorite moments have been interviewing the late legendary R&B singer James Brown and meeting with former V-103er Robin Roberts, now “Good Morning America” host. Both were diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2007 and had surgery, chemo and radiation at the same time.

If you want to reach out to Jaquitta, here’s her Myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/jaquittaw.

-Kaedy Kiely starts her gig at 97.1/The River as morning host on Sept. 18. The station is not personality focused and the morning show is heavily music oriented. But Kiely has tons of experience and will be the primary presence at community events. She’ll contribute music news and interviews to the Web site.

GREAT to hear that Kaedy is gonna be back on the air! 97.1 is the perfect station for her. I always thought she was terrific in her days at 96 Rock, & I think she’ll be a great fit for The River, even though they’re mostly music-driven. Welcome back, Kaedy!!!

…can you blame the station for firing her? i mean, talk about getting on the “disease bandwagon”! she milked that breast cancer thing till it was dry. no pun intended! heck, i always saw her as a no talent wannabee monica kaufmann anyway, with a mouth that could stretch one side of the chattahoochie to the other. good riddance that she’s gone. bring in somebody with some talent the next time why don’t ya, WBSBTV! she needs to take her short, thick-butt self to some podunk tv station out in natchez someplace and git some real seasonin’ or something.

Whatever goes around comes around. bashing folks who are dealing with or over coming cancer is a no no. whoever this mrs whinny whinner, whatever..better hope what u said about this lady dont come and bite u rite square in your azz, or even someone close to you, a family member. breast cancer is very common..better hope u dont end up with it yourself..if you do..expect the same compassion you gave this woman, none. watch your mouth or you may end up eating the same venom your spitting out.and something even more life threatning could happen to you or one of your close family members. you reap what you sow.

Mrs. Winna, you are a loosa. Your hate-filled diatribe impressed absolutely no one. JaQuitta is a competent and poised broadcaster and deserves better that the bitter words you spewed forth. As for “milking” the cancer story, I was not even aware she had the disease and I watched her fairly often. I wish JaQuitta the very best in her future endeavors. As for you Mrs. Winna, eat a chicken bone and die.

Re: Ms. Kiley’s new gig on 97.1 The River. Maybe she can ask them to play more than the 15 songs they play continuously now? Or is it only 14? Atlanta “rock” stations are so lame — I guess they cater to Atlanta listeners, though. “Aim low, boys, they’re riding Shetlands.”

TO DAVE IN MARIETTA

…gee dave, why are you so angry? you mean, dude! take a chill-pill, why don’t’cha! i mean, “eat a chicken-bone and die”? what kind of christian talk is THAT, home-chittlin’? you know as well as i that this jaquitta chick was all over the airways last year with that breast-cancer “immo die quick” scare “schtick”. home-girl had a blog and everything (which nobody visited). she was tellin’ errbody she knows about her “heroic” battle with the disease. my guess is she was trynna audition for an oprah episode or a special “olympics-tale” story of overcoming adversity or what-have-you. anyway, i always viewed it as a slick-sick marketing gambit to endear herself to atlanta’s news junkies and to improve her ratings (just aks her pr person). pure friggin’ calculus! and it didn’t —-thank god—- work. it would have been an insult to any woman truly going thru such a terrible episode in her life. anyway, so what happens? the good old boys over at WSB decided the “math didn’t work on this” and to pull the plug on miss thick body by telling her “ta git ta steppin’”, if i may be so bold as to quite marty-mart. that’s prolly what happened, and i’m stickin’ to that theory/story. and as far as that chicken-bone crack you made, dave, i got one for you, but i can’t use it in such a “polite” forum! suffice it to say, you’d choke on it too!

WHAT has happened to the basic civility in this city—the city once “Too Busy to Hate?” !!! The posts on this—and other—threads is so vile at points, it’s disgusting. Will you people stop with all the racial venom and gratuitious rage? This is a sick world. White people—stop it! Black people—stop it and stop responding to their ignorant mess.

By Mrs. Winna

September 5, 2008 3:13 PM | Link to this

To Voice of Reason: Your trouble is is that you’re looking at every comment as if it’s a racially tinged put-down. That probably speaks more to the state of your mentality relative to the “racial-divide” than to anything someone else may have said on this blog. My suggestion to you is stop trying to be such a “high-minded-politically-correct-holier-than-thou-goodie-two-shoes” and take this crap for what it is: Simple ENTERTAINMENT! Don’t you understand: People love this mess. That’s why they keep coming back to leave their mental entrails!

I’ve known JaQuitta since she was a high school student at the school where I taught. She is a genuinely beautiful young lady and always has been. In addition to her radiant smile, she has a wonderful singing voice! She was a role model for all the students and I was thrilled to see her when she came to WSB. I ran into her one day (on the job) and walked over and spoke to her. She said she didn’t know my name but she remembered that I was a teacher. I never taught her, mind you, just taught at the school of 75 or so faculty members! She’s a sweetheart and no matter what the vicious people say, she outshines them all!

Ms. Winna, I know that this blog is about JaQuitta and I really hate to take away from how beautiful this woman is but, do you have a job,or are you a stalker? You seem to hate her but know everything about her. Are you looking for attention? Are you that unhappy that you sit home all day and say bad things about good people. You know where this lady eats and everything. I’ve got it either you’re lonely, sad, and crazy with no job or you just want to be JaQuitta which one is it!

First of all, I would like to wish Jaquitta much success and many blessings. Secondly, I would like to applaud her for sharing her breast cancer journey. I am a breast cancer survivor and believe me what she did was very very courageous. No one wants to hear the words “you have breast cancer”. You feel as though you have been handed a death sentence. Jaquitta was an inspiration to the women that are going through the battle. You don’t realize what cancer patient go through unless you have cancer or had cancer. Cancer is an epidemic and women should be educated on the subject and how to detect it at an early stage. Early detection saves lives and FAITH gets you through it.

Jaquitta you will be missed. I wish you much happiness and good health.

ps. I wouldn’t wish cancer or cancer treatments on my worst enemy.

Kaedy Kiley coming back to ATL radio! This is huge! Maybe she will bring some of her own CDs and the “NEW” (nothing new about the river any more) will play more than just the Beatles, the Eagles and Boston!

WELCOME BACK KAEDY!

a long time fan…..96 Rock (RIP), Dave FM (Margot is the only one worth listening to now…)

You are amazing and cannot wait to hear what you will bring to the River!

Wish you all the best. Thanks for your work on WSB. More than anything else, wish you a healthy and spiritual life. I used to wonder about the wigs you wore but thought, it was an Afro-American woman thing. This report on your cancer says it all. I hope you remain a happy and contended human being. The reason a lot of people do not and would not make it in life is their negativity. Majority of the people here apparently have good things to say about JaQuitta. Ask yourself, when its all said and done, when the dust is clear and life is over, what would people say about you? Why cant we be sympathetic or at the least be empathetic of our fellow humans? Why can we threat each other with respect, love and compassion? Why can’t we look beyond our differences and embrace our similarities? It is sad that some people just feel like the world owes them something and thus, they have to be bitter, angry and vengeful. They will seize every opportunity they get to transpose their bitterness and anger unto others around them. Such people are often in denial of the fact that they need help and divine intervention to snap out the described situation. Life is too short to be grumpy, miserable and unhappy. If you can seek help, please keep your bitterness to yourself and let the world be. May the Lord forgive you for trying to steal the spotlight from Ms JaQuitta. From the comments in this blog, I think it will be safe to say she is a good person and if she is not, I don’t think it’s for you to judge. The next time you hit your keyboard to type negative things about other people, maybe you ought to examine yourself first. Picking out the shrub in other people’s eye and leaving the log in yours is not particularly a smart idea.

Ms. Williams is a person just like the rest of us. She needs to do what is right for her. I wish her the best. As for some of the negative comments and responses to those comments, hears a little advice: “If it’s not nice, if it’s not helpful, or it’s not true….keep it to yourself.” And if someone feels chooses to not follow this advice, ignore them. Do not get sucked into their world.

Good luck and God’s speed to Ms.Williams.

She is probably leaving local Atlanta news because every newscast starts the first 15 min talking about nothing but murder, robbery, car crashes without insurance coverage, fires in apartment complexes, etc, and these issues seem to be nothing but about blacks and hispanics. Hell, we cant even get a white mayor back in office in this city. It has gotten to be sad to admit to being a white, native Atlantan. There are too many places in this town that good folks just need to stay away from now.

JaQuitta, My mother was battling breast cancer at the same as you, and we felt so privileged to meet you at the ATL Race for the Cure back in May of this year. You were a TRUE INSPIRATION to my Mother, as well as many other Georgians. I am sorry that Ms. Winna is being SO RUDE by bashing you on your tribute page. I admire you. My mother completely understands the career switch, she did the same thing and is enjoying her new job. As a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, we will always admire you and support you through our breast cancer research foundation. God will see the hate in other people, and he will do the judgment one day. But, today is YOUR day JaQuitta, go Celebrate girl! And keep that bright and beautiful smile on your face!

Ms. Winna must be a man. There’s no way that a woman would write such hate about breast cancer. Breast Cancer doesn’t pick and choose it’s women. Also, I belive the other hateful messages is from the same person but under different names. It’s clear that you have a personal problem with JaQuitta. You are mentally distrubed. It looks like your momma didn’t breast feed you. You poor poor looser.

I didn’t think she was hard to look upon. You look at the inside of a person. I looked at you through your email and see ugliness. Sound Republican also. Ms Williams is beautiful person, have you seen her in person. Really cute. Also, did you read and comprehend what she said? She did some soul searching. She escaped death. She received another chance. There is much more to do in life and she is going to do it. Ms Williams you are a beautiful woman.

Sorry to hear that you are leaving Mrs. William. May God bless you in your new life chapters. Also, I would like to thank you for wanting to help a broke college student get paid, when a well known night club in Atlanta shut it’s doors a couple of years ago, without any notice to its employees. Though he never recieved what was owed to him, it was nice to know that someone cared. Thank you.
