9/26: Hot 107.9 confirms what we already knew: Rickey Smiley takes over mornings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
At 8:30 a.m. this morning, Hot 107.9 finally confirmed a rumor that has been running rampant for weeks: comic Rickey Smiley from Birmingham is taking over the morning show in syndication. He starts October 6.
So wipe another locally produced show off the grid as the “A Team” disappears for good. In the past three years, we’ve had an influx of out-of-towners arrive in Atlanta: Steve Harvey has been the most successful at Grown Folks 102.5, Yolanda Adams out of Houston came on last year at Praise 97.5 and Don Imus joined True Oldies 106.7 earlier this year. Bill Bennett has helmed the 920/WGKA-AM morning show for years and Tom Joyner has been a staple at Kiss 104.1 over the past decade plus.
As noted last month, long-time morning host Rashan Ali starting Sept. 29 will be doing mid days (because it seems like radio stations need to have women in mid days, with only a few exceptions) and Emperor Searcy returns to afternoons.
Hot has begun running short clips of his phone pranks, like calling up a tattoo parlor, pretending to be an old woman and trying to get a tattoo of the “Last Supper” done on her back for $10.
Yes, phone pranks! Atlanta already has phone prank lovers over at Star 94’s Morning Mess.
Smiley and I talked about him coming to Atlanta radio in mid August and he said at the time he felt he was well known enough in Atlanta to take on Harvey and Joyner, as well as Frank & Wanda at V-103, the only local show left among the stations targeting the African-American community in Atlanta. We’ll see soon enough.
This move, as noted last month, is primarily financial. The “A Team” actually did well in the ratings but a syndicated show such as Smiley’s owned by Radio One, which also owns Hot, should be significantly cheaper. And the radio business is suffering significant dropoffs in revenues this year so budget cutting is rampant.

Rickey Smiley * * GREAT! GREAT! GREAT! Too bad V103 did get him first. Fwankee and wa wa wa Wanda have also long had their day, really! I tune only to hear special visiting guests - then change the channel. Its just time for new blood. Plus, ATL is full of TRANSPLANTS - cities where morning shows have SWAGGER & EXCITMENT! The local ‘mentality’ or ‘dirty south’ brand was cool maybe 5+ years ago but has smoldered. although the music is poppin on Steve H and Tom J the personaity, jokes etc. are too old for me. Congratz Radio One! still a blazing the trail or air waves!!

Regarding 107.9 * * I absolutely enjoy and love CoCo Brother’s show!!! Moving him to the evening spot was PURE GENIUS. OMG The music, interviews, listener interaction, etc. Co Co Brother is dynamic and maybe he should be shared, nationally & syndicated. He’s a “real” radio GEM.

This SUCKS! I am a 31 year old ATL Native and I could identify with the A-Team because they were my age and we had the same issues in life. I can’t take Frank and Wanda so I guess I’ll listen to 750 in the morning to get traffic. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Change is inevitable I guess; however, this sucks!

I am very sad that the A-Team has been dismembered! Especially Griff! He always kept me laughing. I am also sad because there will be no more audience interaction. When I first started working my early shifts I listened to the A-Team and that became my weekday ritual. I guess I will be popping in my c.d.’s. I am so not going to listen to Frank Ski hypocrtical self on V103!

I just wanted to say that I don’t appreciate the rapid change!!!No warning nothing just happened to hear T.I. saying that Ricky Smiley was going to be on the radio. I was raised here and I can really relate to the natives.I loved the A-Team and when them pulled off the air like that is like not being able to say goodbye to a friend that you see or talk to on a regular basis.
Not to mention I really don’t wanna here prank calls in the morning everyday So I might have to purchase some new CD’s to get me to work in the morning.:(

I understand that change is inevitable, but I am more disappointed that they would cut the A-Team and keep the Dirty Boyz. I could care less about ratings when it comes to them. They are crude, nasty and make blacks look bad and it’s sad that they encourage listeners especially young ones to be just as ignorant as they are. At least the A-Team did stuff for the community. That was a bad move if you ask me.

The “A” team brought excitment to Atlanta Radio. I enjoyed listening until I got tired of listening to this fake version of Rap music called from the Dirty south. At least the A team has something different to offer other than the same o same o. I cant listen to Frank & wanda and Mr/Ms Sofia. so What is the remedy? XM or Serius Radio is the cure and you never know maybe the “A-Team” will get a show on XM Radio

Good Riddance,The so called “A” team is no more,no more ghetto fab Rashan ali and company, seriously I can’t imagine any one over the age of 21 who has any aspiration in life actually listened to that collection of “hood” reports every morning. I listen to 102.5 even though I am in my twenties and I love it mature issues, mature music and social consciousness. Hot 107.9 sets a bad example to young kids with the “dity boyz”and the A team.

Indeed, a show such as the A-Team could only last for this long in a predmoninantly African American community that encourages and applauds people like Young Jeezy and his dope dealing; Lil Jon and his supporting and promotion of porno movies (yes, he’s on them and promoting them); anything that is “hood”, “gangster”, “gutta”, or “ghetto”. It’s ridiculous.
What happened to the days when a young man was respected because he had a nice, clean hair cut; wore a belt and tucked his shirt into his pants; spoke English without very many slang words and had great diction; a young man who wanted to aspire to be anything but a rapper, a baller (pick a sport), producer, dope dealer (trapper).
What happened to the days when a young lady was respected because she wore a shirt that did not show all of her business (Double D’s hanging out) with tattoo’s showing; or when she wore pants that did not show all her business like hip hugging pants that show her crack when she bends over (and she knows people are looking)or pants so tight EVERYONE can see her camel toe.
What happened to the days when a clean cut young man or young lady was admired and looked up to because he or she wanted to do something positive, spoke in complete sentences, didn’t cuss out loud in public, and just wanted to make his or her family proud?
Have you really listened to the music that the A-Team played? Uh, “..make her scream like a cop car..” “..lick it like a lollipop..” ..and just about every song on that station contains explicit lyrics that are now played without any bleeping, or the songs contain very clear references to explicit and graphic sexual images.
For real though- Sad when anyone loses a job and may not be able to support their family. Yes, it’s unfortunate.
What’s even more unfortunate, however, is that each member of the A-Team should be indicted and charged with being an accomplice to slowly poisoning the African American community with such trash.
Some will say, “..it’s only music, man..” Others will say, “..then don’t listen to it..”
Listen, in the 70’s, people smoked in cars with kids inside, smoked in restaurants, public places, you name it.. And people said, so what? Who cares if “they” are smoking.. It’s their decision.. If “they” want to hurt themselves, then let them smoke and kill themselves.. They’re not bothering anyone..
Yet, in the early 90’s, the world realized that “second-hand smoke” had been killing the kids who were in the cars with adults that smoked.. had been causing cancer in people who lived with smokers..
What’s my point, you ask?
Second Hand Smoke Kills! You may listen to such degrading, explicit, and immoral music.. Ok, fine.. but, your child humming the song, your child actually saying “..my bust-it baby..” is not cool.. It’s harming the children and having a negative impact on anyone who listens.

Spike Lee said it in 1990:
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE UUUUUUUUUP!
OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY DESPERATELY NEEDS GOD~

This sucks… realy nothing against Rickey but unless he moves to Altanta we don’t want em. We want radio personalities that we can hang with on the weekends
