10/5: Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inductees, Class of 2008

The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inducted its second class of radio pros on Saturday night. Congratulations to all of you.

  • The Braves announcing team of Skip Caray (right), Ernie Johnson and Pete Van Wieren. Technically, this award is only given to living personalities but Caray was nominated before his death. After he died, the non-profit organization announced their entry into the hall of fame early. (The names were supposed to be all announced on October 4.)

  • Gary Corry. He was program director for WQXI in the 1970s and helped host the “Quixie Ramblin’ Raft Race” and head writer for the Gary McKee Morning Show and he created the Red Neckerson character. He also worked as a writer and character voice for Rhubarb Jones on WYAY.

  • Capt. Herb Emory. He has some history in Atlanta, working with “Skinny” Bobby Harper, “Big” Hugh Baby, Gary McKee the Steve & Vikki Show and most recently, on WSB_AM. He is easily the best known traffic reporter in town.

  • Red Jones He has worked as a program director at WQXI-AM and WFOM in Marietta. He now is the morning man on WKNG in Tallapoosa.

  • Scott Slade(right) Griffin native, he joined WSB-AM in 1984 and has been host of the morning show since 1991. He is a two-time winner of personality of the year from the National Association of Broadcasters and a national Edward R. Murrow Award. He also helped start WSB-AM’s Care-a-thon for the AFLAC Cancer Center in 2000 that has raised more than $7 million. His show is regularly ranked No. 1 or 2 in key demos.

-Tony Taylor He’s a voice-over expert, who worked at WGST-AM and became commercial spokesman for Home Depot. He had a boutique ad agency until he retired in 2006.

-Del Ward She was the only person without Atlanta ties to get in this year (and the only woman). She was a Macon institution with 51 years at WMAZ-TV and radio.

A few folks were nominated but didn’t get inducted this year including Steve McCoy and Kelly McCoy at B98.5 (no relation!)
