10/5: Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inductees, Class of 2008
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inducted its second class of radio pros on Saturday night. Congratulations to all of you.
The Braves announcing team of Skip Caray (right), Ernie Johnson and Pete Van Wieren. Technically, this award is only given to living personalities but Caray was nominated before his death. After he died, the non-profit organization announced their entry into the hall of fame early. (The names were supposed to be all announced on October 4.)
Gary Corry. He was program director for WQXI in the 1970s and helped host the “Quixie Ramblin’ Raft Race” and head writer for the Gary McKee Morning Show and he created the Red Neckerson character. He also worked as a writer and character voice for Rhubarb Jones on WYAY.
Capt. Herb Emory. He has some history in Atlanta, working with “Skinny” Bobby Harper, “Big” Hugh Baby, Gary McKee the Steve & Vikki Show and most recently, on WSB_AM. He is easily the best known traffic reporter in town.
Red Jones He has worked as a program director at WQXI-AM and WFOM in Marietta. He now is the morning man on WKNG in Tallapoosa.
- Scott Slade(right) Griffin native, he joined WSB-AM in 1984 and has been host of the morning show since 1991. He is a two-time winner of personality of the year from the National Association of Broadcasters and a national Edward R. Murrow Award. He also helped start WSB-AM’s Care-a-thon for the AFLAC Cancer Center in 2000 that has raised more than $7 million. His show is regularly ranked No. 1 or 2 in key demos.
-Tony Taylor He’s a voice-over expert, who worked at WGST-AM and became commercial spokesman for Home Depot. He had a boutique ad agency until he retired in 2006.
-Del Ward She was the only person without Atlanta ties to get in this year (and the only woman). She was a Macon institution with 51 years at WMAZ-TV and radio.
A few folks were nominated but didn’t get inducted this year including Steve McCoy and Kelly McCoy at B98.5 (no relation!)

The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame is a sham if it can’t induct Tom “The King” Hughes or Kim “The Kimmer” Peterson.

Rodney…I don’t know where this Georgia Radio Hall of Fame came from, but the original Hall is housed at the University of Georgia, and has about 50 or so members that have been voted on over the years by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. Such names as Elmo Ellis, Don Elliott Heald, Stan Raymond, and broadcasters from all over the state are pictured on the walls of the School of Journalism. Might make a good story for you. John

Who else is left at WSB to be inducted, other than Scruffy the WSB janitor?

The Hall of Fame mentioned by Lauer is not a radio hall of fame, but a broadcasters hall of fame which includes tv and radio folks. Perhaps if Lauer took the time to educate himself, he can learn more about this highly successful, non profit organization which celebrates Georgia’s great RADIO history. The website is www.grhof.com.

You might also remember “Cowboy” Gary Corry from “JJ and the Cowboy”, afternoons on WQXI. When I moved here in 1980, with only an AM radio in the car, I spent a lot of time listening to him and JJ Jackson. Congratulations.

Gee…I sure hope Chuck Deskins nominates me. Where is Deskins? I have not seen him in the Building of Death for a few weeks. There’s a pretty girl sitting at his desk. I would talk to her, but I’m scared and stupid.

Bloomquist, you big idiot! Clear Channel tossed me out of the Building of Death last month. Nominate you? I don’t think there’s a MORON of the YEAR award. But if there were, you win hands down. Now leave me alone as I have to clean the toilets at the Walmart on Bankhead Highway.

Sorry but the information isn’t correct. There were 8 inductees. Bill Bowick a Columbus, Georgia legend for over 50 years was also inducted.
Atlanta isn’t the only one who has radio!!!!!!!
How could your paper have slighted someone who deserves as much credit as the others?

I gleaned it off the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame Web site Saturday night. They had accidentally omitted Bill Bowick at the time. I’m sorry. I see the Web site now has it correct.

The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame will never live up to it’s name as long as they don’t induct “Alley Pat” Patrick.

Scott Slade is the most overrated personality in radio. REPEAT Slade rarely ever gives us any news. He does however repeat the time every minute “7:17—-17 minutes after the hour”.Herb is a bozo with a bunch of hacks that pretend to be all over the the sky with traffic, very unreliable. And is Kirk Mellish a drunk?

Adam you’re stupid. The members nominate and vote. And baloney, you’re full of the substance that exits the posterior of a horse, also what Adam has for lunch daily.

Rather than complaining about who is not in the Hall, perhaps you should go through the process; join the organization, nominate your fab fav radio idol, furnish a bio and let the members vote. This is done without regard to race, sex, religion, favorite Monkee, etc. or, what Mr. correct said.

Mr. Correct, you must be an employee of WSB, otherwise you would know that what I said was accurate. You would know that if oyu have ever listened to that crew. Sure WSB dominates the ratings, and sure REPEAT Slade wins alot of awards, but when there is no other station with a signal that you can pick up during the early morning or late evening you are left with whomever Cox/WSB wants us to have. That station is terrible, but it is the only game in town.

I’ve noticed that about WSB’s traffic also - it’s like a game of “Hackey Sack” where it gets kicked from one person to the next unnecessarily. Gimmick. And when Herb’s on the ground having an RC cola, they doctor the audio to make it sound like he’s still in the air. More gimmickery.
Speaking of hack, “Capt.” Herb isn’t worthy of carrying one of the late, great Keith Kalland’s ubiquitous ladders from the roadway.

Baloney sounds to me like you’re someone who doesn’t know jack about the business. And speaking of sucking, that Keith guy, yeah I heard him once…and your point is? Go spout your punditry on one of the many radio boards designed for engineers losers such as yourself.

Cap’n Herb needs to be grounded so he can do his NASCAR bit late at nite when noone is listening. He couldn’t fly a darn kite.

I didn’t get an answer about Kirk Mellish. Is he a drunk? He sounds like it on air with his bumbling and pauses while he reads the weather.Plus he is off an awful lot.Makes me think he may hit the bottle.

Scott Slade has uttered the phrase “WSB” over a million times in his career at that radio station. Amazing!
