10/8: Real Housewives of Atlanta premiere party, feedback
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I know, I know. You’re probably already sick of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” but I skipped the Presidential debate to attend the premiere party at the W Hotel near Perimeter Mall. It was a swank affair in a crowded room showing the first episode on not just one, but TWO screens. Hundreds of people were there, including Evander Holyfield (his daughter works for one of the housewives), former Falcon Chuck Smith, Mark Hayes of “Good Day Atlanta” and Rashan Ali of Hot 107.9.
After the show was over, the five ladies posed for photos endlessly. I was there at least an hour after it was over and the cameras were still snapping! I only took a couple of shots:
NeNe Leakes with DeShawn Snow at the W.
Hot 107.9’s Rashan Ali talks with Justin Jones.
Former Falcon Chuck Smith, who knows four of the ladies (including NeNe from his hometown) joins real estate developer Chris Davenport.
I spoke with Gregg, the real estate developer married to NeNe, who was being handed a gift box from the W given to his wife to hold on to. It was a “wish” box so he said, “I wish for success, happiness and wealth!” When I noted to him that he looked a bit uncomfortable on the show, he said, “I’m more of a behind the scenes guy.” He did enjoy the show, though: “Nene is always going to be real and that’s what I love about her.”
ABOVE: Nyssa Green, who owns a makeup/wardrobe agency called the Green Room, with “Good Day Atlanta” co-host Mark Hayes.
Reaction to the show in the blogosphere hasn’t exactly been kind. The contrast between the show and the economy going to hell is a bit surreal. The roughest one I saw is from jezebel.com
The Real Housewives of Atlanta — made up mostly of women who are wives of athletes — are the shallowest, bitchiest, and most materialistic we’ve seen in this Bravo series. All of them act like the girls you see on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 — demanding designer labels, extravagant birthday cakes, and fully loaded Escalades — but perhaps the most disgusting is ShereĂ©, who talks about how much “class” she has, which is a sure sign she doesn’t have any.
Zap2it gave it a lukewarm review.
All in all, there are no real surprises in this third version of the franchise. There’s still an orgy of excessive spending, jockeying for recognition and questionable taste. It’s all a bit too familiar, and maybe, just maybe, audiences have finally gotten their fill of watching people richer than they are enjoy life more. While we’re strategizing on when to fill up on gas, how to stay gainfully employed and how to balance grocery shopping with eating out, it’s asking a lot for us to really care about those who write $68,000 checks for a car in one go, never wear the same outfit twice or have a bowling alley in their basement.
And here’s film.com’s take.:
Apparently, The Real Housewives of Atlanta didn’t get the memo about the economy, or else they’re single-handedly trying to revive it.

I loved the show and I hope that it stays on for an hour every Tuesday. I will not miss one show. My two favorite people are Lisa and Sheree. They are very true to themselves and from what I see; they are not fake at all. To all the other bloggers that are out there saying the negatives. You are haters. On the other Housewives show the ladies on there do exactly the same if not worse. There are ladies on there who are drunks, condone their kids to behave in very negative ways as in talking back and just being disrespectful. They have been to all these doctors after doctors to get improvements on their bodies when the actually look even more ridiculous. The Atlanta Housewives are different all the way. Some might be married into money but on the same hand they are not out there just kicking the willy bobo. They have their own lives, own foundations and multiple businesses that are their passion. This is not a game for them it is real life and they are doing it big. So just because you (if you are the hater) are not use to seeing beautiful African American women with such success; do not sit there and belittle them because you have not come up.

This is “reality?” I’d never watch a show like this and it amazes me that it’s receiving so much coverage by the AJC. Choosing to air this type of show in this day and age is simply stupid. What’s more unfortunate is that these women, their entourages, and everybody else buying into the hype that “this is how life is meant to be lived” appear completely pathetic to everybody who even bothers to cast a glance their way.

Did I watch….hmm, no I brushed my teeth instead which was far more exciting. Not exactly an ‘A List’ crowd in attendance I see. This show has such lofty goals! Check back in a few years and see how many of these..for lack of a better word I will use ladies…are doing. They will be fat, broke and in need of a full day at the hair salon. Not exactly a pedigreed lot of folks. The show like the women I am sure are both entertaining, entertaining in a way you should feel bad to be entertained by.

Wow, these women actually made me embarrassed to be an Atlantan and a Human being. Saying stuff like ” In Atlanta it is what you wear and what you drive” gives me little reason to expect much from these narcissist. $5000 hand bags?, give me a break. If having an exclusive handbag is the most important thing in your life then you are a serious loser.

And your life must be very shallow for you to WANT to watch a show like that for an hour every week.
Try getting away from the tv. It’s all made up anyway. Get a life.

I don’t care if these ladies have money or not…I just care that I now embarrassed to say I live in Atlanta after this show aired. Every city has it’s sad side…I guess it was just a matter of time to see that in Atlanta it is not just South Fulton - The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce must be so proud.

Another dumbing down America show. No wonder we are the laughing stock of the world. Common girls who married money - when will they learn that money can buy you good looks, but no intelligence, grace or class. Sorry, they look like rich ghetto women. What a sad way to picture America!

I don’t care if these “ladies” are African-American, white, Latina or anything else. It’s not about race, y’all. It’s about class, dignity and grace, all of which appear to be in short supply with this group. I’d like to see them live as real housewives, which means working, raising kids, cleaning their own houses, finding some time for fun, and all on a middle class budget. If they had to do all of that, the show would turn into “Survivor” really quickly with all 5 getting voted off in the first week!

I tuned in to the show last night & boy am I sorry. Bravo calls this real/reality? Last time I checked a REAL housewife/mom took care of her children & household on her own. She doesn’t hire other people to do her job! I am a REAL GA Peach, born & raised (in Duluth for that matter where most of the ladies live) & I’ve never run into or met people like this. These ladies are so materialistic & narcissistic. Could it be they have low self-esteem? Without their rich husbands/boyfriends they wouldn’t have anything. Well done Bravo, what a great depiction of Atlanta…

There is just as much if not more gang violence in Gwinette county, there is just as many hoods in Dekalb county, there are just as many thugs in Clayton or Cobb county. Damn there is hood in every county NOT JUST SOUTH FULTON.

I hated it! It was the worst representation of Atlanta. These women were fake, pretentious and you could tell they aren’t used to having money. Lisa was probably the best representation. The rest clearly aren’t poised, professional or humble. Its an embarrassment. Sheree bragging about her divorce and taking his money. Then talking about how much class she has. NeNe acting a ghetto mess at the party. Ugh. I’m sure there are plenty of women, especially African American women, that would’ve represented the city better. Hopefully if this show comes back they pick a better cast.

I’d like to see this show filmed today as we live in this economy — not something that was filmed back in March and that has been postponed numerous times. Also, I thought Atlanta was a pretty diverse place, not just made up of black women who acquired their money because they are or were wives of former athletes. That, and the token white girl who says she should be black. This is not even remotely an accurate representation of Atlanta. It’s very sad. Regardless of any race, there was not an ounce of class shown on that show. Too much of the “me, me, me” attitude.

Those ghetto women are fresh out of the ghetto and will find themselves back there as soon as their husbands dump them or lose their money. The women have nothing: no manners, no education, no background, no charm. Their vulgarity was astounding. They chewed gum even while mixing with who they consider “the elite.” Guess what, ladies? “The elite” don’t even know you exist.

I don’t care how much tacky new money they claim to have, I bet a dime to a dollar they still shop on Buford Hwy., buying fake knock-offs. I hope they keep their MARTA bus pass, they’ll need it sooner rather than later. FYI: This show shouldn’t surprise anyone who has spent any time in Atlanta. Sad thing, they’re too stupid to realize what jokes they are. They actually think they’re stars. Can we say LOW RENT.

Tanisha, I’m with you girl and I see so far that I am the only one. Yeah so we’re all suffering from the economic downturn, but its great to see African Americans (and fellow Atlantans) doing well for themselves. So often in TV and other media, African Americans are cast in a negative light. I don’t have issues with them spending what we’d call extravagant sums of cash. They can afford it. If you had the cash, wouldn’t you spend it? I would. I can’t blame these ladies at all. I’m working hard myself so I can get to their level one day. I look forward to seeing more of the show, and Lisa’s my favorite!

Clearly the title of it was meant to be taken as a joke…is the humor in it really that hidden to where true housewives are offended? Everyone should know by now that reality tv isn’t real but scripted. Even if by some chance this is how these woman actually are, so what? It’s their lives, their money, and they can live it how they want, and spend it in whatever manner they please. At the end of the day, no one is forcing you to watch it, and for those who expected something of substance out of the show…come on now, really? I think people now a days take things too seriously.

Bravo used what they had because the real movers and shakers with money refused to do the show. That being said, I hate that these women (except Lisa) represent our great city on a national TV show. Embarrassing isn’t the word. And as for Sheree, how did she manage before she took her husband for everything but his skid-marked draws? I can’t imagine she had an entourage before she met her husband, so why is it impossible to live without one now? She struck gold so hard she could put a Forty-Niner to shame. Let this be a lesson to all you professional athletes and businessmen out there: GET A PRENUP!!!

The show made me wonder 2 things:how come people with really long money like Bill Gates are not that ostentatious? And how come there isn’t any more quality television programs on anymore? I mean I’m 28 and though I still have my guilty pleasures that I secretly indulge in(Flavor of Love, Juniors section when shopping for club clothes, and Krystal’s hamburgers) but I do it all in moderation! T.V. is saturated with garbage these days from the time you get off til the time you go to bed. I can’t imagine how hard it is for parents to monitor what your kids are watching these days. Most of the filth doesn’t even have vulgarity in it…it’s the character flaws that make you want to cover your kids’ eyes and ears. I won’t just single out this show. I’m sure I’ll watch it for the ‘can’t turn your head from a trainwreck’ that it is, but I will be conscious of the fact that too much of anything can be a terrible thing. Also realize that the networks influence the ‘characters’ to be a little bit more dramatic for ratings. We all need a little excitement in our lives.

I Guess Most of You Are Missing The Point of The Show and Haven’t Seen The Other Housewives’ Shows. I Am Against ALL Reality Shows, But When You See Comments That Are So Negative About a Show That Has Only Aired One Episode, You Got To Ask Yourself “Is It Really That Serious”….I See Alot of People Saying How Ghetto and How They Act Like Hood Rats, Honestly There Is One Chick(Maybe Two) That Really Seemed To Act Like She Might Possibly Fit That Stereotype Out of The Five Women. The Others Seemed To Have A Little More Sense. Also, I See People Talking About Do They Have More Pressing Issues Other Than Purses and Clothes….Hell No, They’re Rich Women Who Don’t Have To Work, and They Are RICH. You Also Got To Consider How Networks, Production Companies, and Reality Shows Portray The Worse In People(They Can Make a Good Person Look Like a Bad Person)….It’s Just TV People

With all the wealthy, educated, classy black people that live in the Cascades alone, I am shocked that Bravo went and found these childish, low-class, materialistic women. I was done when DeShawn ” Can’t Manage My Own Realty Company” Snow made the comment that the Estate mgr would need to deal with the other “people” that work at the house. As if she is above talking to these “people”. She claims to be so church-going, yet has not learned humility at all. If I am correct she is from of all places DETROIT.
It is apparent Bravo was less interested in housewives and more interested in ratings. They should have just called it the Real Ghetto Wannabees of Atlanta.

My name is Michelle and I’m a 30 year old Atlanta native. I’m a huge fan of the “Housewives” series on Bravo and was thrilled to see that they were going to have “Housewives” in Atlanta. Tuesday night I skipped the presidential debate to watch the Atlanta premier and I sat stunned with horror in front of TV for the next hour.
Seriously, the south already gets a bad reputation as the fattest and most uneducated area of the United States. Now Atlanta will be known for desperate gold digging women with no class.
My mother always told me that money can never buy class and when it comes to “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”… she was absolutely right! These women are common. When I say common… I mean that they have no manners or any idea how to conduct themselves as true ladies and that is a shame. I know when it comes to reality TV, the viewer only gets to see small snippets of time with these ladies and a character can be portrayed in an unflattering context. I hope this is the case with “Housewives” in Atlanta.
I was also reading all the bios on the Bravo website and saw that none of these women even live IN Atlanta. They live in Alpharetta or Duluth which is about 26 miles outside of Atlanta. Maybe the true ladies of Atlanta have better things to do with their time than shameless self promotion or Bravo picked these ladies hoping the series would turn into something from the Jerry Springer show.

@Cranberry - ok first of all let’s get something str8 because you can’t make judgments about me based on a few words. I am honorable, classy and I respect myself. I do not consider myself to be a gold digger b/c money isn’t everything to me. What I was saying is I think its cool how Lisa has many talents and put them to work to make money for her. Why should she be considered a “money-grubbing, selfish floozy” b/c she works hard and is enjoying the fruits of her labor? I hope to sit back and enjoy what I’ve worked for too.

I wonder if Bravo TV has a legal disclaimer before each show. ” Watching the following program may inflict severe brain damage and cause you to want to hurl in a profuse manner. Many may find this show distressing enough to want to poke out their own eyes or leap from a tall building.” Please watch with extreme caution.

By where da white women at - You are obviously ignorant. There are enough white women on television sucking and kissing each other. They are not hot southern belles, they are trashy just like the rest of the nasty people on television who don’t know anything about decency. Show me a southern belle and I will show you a s** from Hooters. Anywayk, aren’t most of the southern belles working at the Pink Pony?

I was channel surfing and did not find anything else I wanted to watch. Did not realize it was the premier episode until I read newspaper. I loved the O.C. version. Those women dealt w/everyday issues, ie. kids, relationships, career. Hopefully the Atl version will be more realistic and less materialistic in the future. I’m willing to give it a chance before tuning out. Mindless tv like this is for entertainment, it”s a good distraction from the doom and gloom of the news. Sometimes you just need that!

I read about these “ladies” yeterday’s AJC and had no interest in seeing the show. If that article was supposed to be flattering it certainly missed its mark. The most charitble description I can think of for these women is the good old fashioned southern word TACKY.

No class trash. Granted, it’s good TV because you can NOT believe that people like that actually exist OR that us native Atlantans get the opportunity to show you what our once beautiful southern town has turned into. They filmed a scene at my boyfriend’s place of work and said they were the rudest, bitchiest, acting like they were owed something women, it was unbelievable.
What else I find funny? Most of them liv ein Duluth or Sugarloaf- NOT ATLANTA!!! They couldn’t afford to live in thise big fancy “hey, look at me” houses in Buckhead. This show should have been done about women with REAL money living in an Atlanta zip code.
These pieces of trash will get their fifteen minutes of fame and become the laughing stock (yet sadly becoming the standard) of this state.

I have watched the reality shows Real Housewives of Orange County and Housewives of New York; most of them did not work, had fake breast, face lifts; children on drugs; gold diggers, married for money, or were at least trying to get married and fake. They are no better or more sophisticated than the Atlanta housewives. All of these women need a reality check.

These women were acting like they weren’t use to money. Whomever Big Papa is, please stay on the low low. I would be embarrassed too. The chick is using all of your money. Honestly, this sucked. I personally know african american women in this city who have real careers married to rich men who carry themselves much better than this. This was so over the top I don’t think any of this is real. NFLers don’t have NBA loot so the life style going on onthis show is un believable. The network could have done a better job at casting for this. Other than Eric Snow’s wife the rest seem like a bunch of groupy chicks who were at the right place at the right time leaving their husbands, ex’s and boyfriends in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know Bob Whitfield is gonna show this episode in court.Keep your loot bro!! Also, since when has Sandy Springs become exclusive?

By darb - You are a crazy, stupid w** if you believe that white women are any better than what you saw on the Housewives of Atlanta. Please give me a break; look at Girls Gone Wild. They might not have corn rows, but they are nasty, stinky, trash. One of them is probably your daughter, but of course you probably would not find a problem with her behavior. It amazes me how women like you can know that your husband is sleeping with your daughter or another man and keep silent. However, as soon as a black person does anything you have a racist comment. It is a shame what this whole world has turned into. Obviously, when your eyes see white you think it’s right. There are plenty of nasty white women in Atlanta and the rest of America. I bet you wouldn’t even consider writing a comment about white trashy w** on television. Regardless of the blog/comments on these sites, there is aways some prick who makes it into a race issue. I will always ride with you when you do.

I must say that it was not as embarrassing as I thought it would be but still just as tacky as the wives of OC and NY. Class can’t be bought. I repeat, CLASS CAN’T BE BOUGHT. NeNe is the most real. I was a little taken back by the focus of extravagance, but if that’s what you choose to do with your money, knock yourself out. I personally would have liked to see the show focus more on their day to day lives, their charities, their families…it made Atlanta seem very shallow and superficial.

There is not one brain cell amongst all of them. The most unreal part is how sad and pathetic they look, yet they’re oblivious to the fact that people with REAL money look at them like something that stuck to their shoe.

First of all, Kim’s boyfriend is a married man, that is why they dont show or talk about him. That townhome she lives in is paid for by him. I personally have seen kim in public before..lawrenceville, not duluth..she is always by herself, so by process of elimination, she is doing a married man….for nene, sheree and the one married to the basketball player, they are all hoodrats and if had to guess former strippers at bodytap or platinum 21, hence the ghetto tattoo on sherees leg when she was getting her toes did. the real housewives of atlanta are too busy for the grown up version of my sweet 16 birthday show on mtv. they are working, bathing their children, cooking dinner. nothing that those hoodrats are familiar with. bob whitfield, have your divorce attorney get a copy of these shows, i am sure it will help you out in divorce court s0 sheree doesnt get that 7 figure payout she wants.

I too aspire to be a person of wealth….how you handle it is what makes the difference. Everyone is different. I saw where someone made mentioned of how this doesn’t show “true” housewives. What show have you seen that showed the truth? The show is entitled “The Real Housewives.” Get over it. Why is the fact that they are wives or ex-wives of athletes a big issue? Does it really matter? It’s not like Atlanta is not partially comprised of athletes and those in the music industry. I read a lot of comments regarding the language that was used on the show. Yes, I agree they didn’t use their words but reading these responses neither are the people here. HMMM! People are upset because of how Atlanta was represented…but really when you hear about Atlanta is it always a “Peachy” comment. People watch Desperate Housewives, Soap Operas and many other shows that depict rich people; why are people hating so harshly on this one? Did it show a glimpse of current you, the person you wanted to be or hopefully the old you? Lastly, those who have money can spend money this is apart of life. Those who don’t have the money still try to spend what they don’t have. Which makes more sense?

This new cast of the Real Housewives differs from the original housewives, which were from Orange county. The housewives from Orange County were housewives. However they were also women who made their own money, tackled relationship issues and spent time with their children being mothers. I dont see that from the housewives in atl. There are many successful, rich women in Atlanta who are married, make their own money while taking care of their families. I would have rather seen that. Atlanta women are more than just celebrity or sports wives who do nothing more than spend someone elses money.

Its sad to see how we talk about these ladies how trashy and ghetto they are. Who standards are they to live to? None of us is perfect nor will we ever have the ability to. Whats bad is all of you who have felt “insulted” and “embarassed” really need to get over it! I wonder if you feel that way when black women are represented as a bitch or a ho in thousands of videos and songs! Do you feel that way when we see our fellow black men accounting for 70% of the people in jail, do you feal insulted when in most large metropolitan areas the majority of high school drop outs are african american. Get insulted about some real things. Stop trying to ridicule people over what you perceive to be the truth and get the real deal. Everyone is so quick to judge but let the truth be told half of the women that have posted comments on here probably have a secret desire to live a life like these women live. But instead of looking at the glass half full you look at as half empty. I will tell you this I know for a fact that Deshawn is not a Gold digger because She and her Husband have been together since their Sophmore year in college! Where they BOTH graduated with college degrees. And lets not forget…Its not where your were its where you are right now!

People take reality TV way to seriously. The Real Housewives are for entertainment purposes for the most part. If they were to put some of these tight faced, tea and crumpet eating heifers on the air no one including the ones that are complaining. A matter of fact especially the ones that are complaining. It’s entertainment, if your not interested or amused turn the damn t.v. off. I TiVo’d Housewives while I watched the debate with my husband. Yes, it’s bad, but it’s good to watch after a long day of working with complete idiots- it’s entertainment people. If you want educational t.v. Bravo is not the channel, try C-Span or the History Channel (which I also enjoy). NeNe and the white chic were strippers, Sheree came to Atlanta to go to college, DeShaun married a gullable dude and Lisa is a hustler-who will pay the bills for her man if she needs to. All have married “well”, isn’t that what we secretly tell our daughters and girlfriends. My father would disown me if I brought home a bum. The men LOVE it, trust me they wouldn’t pay for their wives lifestyle if they didn’t. I hope they have saving accounts and their children are going to private schools, but hey maybe they didn’t get the memo. Sheree’s retired NFL husband cheated on her, in their home while she was there numerous times (he said they were artists). She’s angry (poor thing), that’s why she’s so superficial- she hiding her hurt in Gucci. I’ve lived it, loved it, and now I have moved on. Gone are the days of exotic vacations (seeing the world), eating at five star restaurants (wine conneseiur sp?), pricey clothes (fashionista). It’s a great experience. I know men and women who benefit greatly from weathly men that just want their attention. If I had the opportunity to spend someone else’s money at whim, I would do it again and again and again… I would now shop at Target and put the rest in the bank. Well maybe not the bank (lol), in a shoe box in my panty drawer. Folks, like a sales women once told me “if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it” Sweet Tea OUT!

Atlanta is only 13% black so it’s not representing Atlanta correctly, plus these women are not even from here. I’m sure Bravo asked ‘real housewives’ from ATL to be in the show but they declined. I have watched Real Housewives of Orange County, New York and now Atlanta. This show is no different than the other two past shows. All the women were materialistic, stuck on themselves, enjoyed the finer things in life and spent BIG money. All the shows had there share of drama and this one is no different. On Orange County and New York there were no blacks or any other race represented; but white women, so why are we complaining now when it is a majority of black women on the show with one white lady. Atlanta is not the only diverse city. I put it like this, if you do not like the show then DO NOT watch it, you have an option to watch something else. Pick up the darn remote and turn the t.v. it is that simple. Stop complaining about something you have control over.

I watched the show. They were wild, but my thought was ok…what if your husband leaves you. That is the problem. Women find a man and try to ride their coat tails. They are spending all of that money, but if he has a prenup and wants a women who had the skills, then what? You can’t live in a Range Rover. I’m not calling them ghetto or hood rats, but I really wish they would be smart about theirs. Put some of that money up. Now Sheree was just out of control. She bragging about what someone else worked hard for and now she’s trying to take it…but hey…what goes around definitely will come around. And I would hate it if they had to get out and fight for their own. I think Lisa is the only one that would make it!!

It’s sad that whenever black women are put on tv they are either the embrassing ghetto New York type, or freaks in a degrading video, or materialistic idiots. Has any one of those women made their own money? Even if they have there is still no excuse for thinking you are so high and mighty you can’t talk to the help.
