10/13: WAGA’s “Road Warrior” Mark Hyman going back to regular reporting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Mark Hyman, daily “Road Warrior” for “Good Day Atlanta” on WAGA-TV, is moving back to regular general assignment reporting after just over a year in the spot.
His boss Gene McHugh confirmed the move today, though I haven’t heard from Hyman himself yet. I’ll update this when I get something from Hyman.
“I think he’s a terrific writer and a great storyteller,” McHugh said. “We feel he is better served in the afternoons with the big stories.”
He said the news director Budd McEntee is pondering whether to place the job in rotation rather than have one person on location live every morning to do something goofy or promote an upcoming event. For instance, today, here’s a bit he did with the Young Chefs Academy in Sandy Springs where they were making omelettes.
Until McEntee makes a decision, Hyman will stay on morning “Warrior” duty for the time being. Here’s Hyman’s official WAGA-TV bio.
Hyman replaced long-time “warrior,” Brett Martin, who left under odd, never fully clarified, circumstances. Brett has been doing some freelance work for WGCL’s “Better Mornings.” Here’s his bio there.. As if often the case, his bio does not reference WAGA at all.
-Congratulations to Shaffee Abraham on the Giant Show for grabbing the Thrashers in-game announcer gig that Steve Craig (formerly of 99X) used to do. Here are his comments from his Myspace page:
I’ve played hockey since I was a little kid, which isn’t very unusual when you grow up in “Hockeytown”, Detroit, Michigan. Seems like 4 out of every 5 kids I went to school with played the sport as well. Of course, at one time or another we all had dreams of making it to the NHL. While it turned out that I wasn’t talented enough to make it as a player, I believe the next best thing is to be involved in any other way. I’m happy that I’ve found a way to be associated with the NHL and a terrific organization like the Atlanta Thrashers.
While it’s true I have no prior experience as a PA announcer for hockey, I do love and respect the game very much and will do my absolute best to conduct myself in a professional manner at all times.

Congrats to Shaffee. Now twice as many people will listen to him during hockey season.

I’m thrilled the Thrashers picked out a guy that regularly ripped the team on the air.

I am so glad they got rid of the old man doing the “road warrior”. He was awful! I have wondered why they got rid of Bret and hired the conservative old guy. You need somebody goofy to do those bits….

Hyman’s a decent guy and a talanted reporter. But he seemed way out of place as the “Road Warrior.” One thing that really annoys me is that he rarely interacts with the studio hosts.

I am elated that Mr. Hyman will be going back to what he does best. I did not know what happened to Brett but he has been truly missed. I hope the next person will be interesting. Mr Hyman was very boring.

I agree - Lucky Yates is the man for this job! His presence in Atlanta has been sorely missed without The Lucky Yates Show running at the Vortex anymore - bring Lucky Yates to all of Atlanta, WAGA!

Probably for the best it is very painful to watch his segment, I feel so embarassed for him.
