10/23: Cutbacks at WSB-AM, Kiss 104.1 and 97.1/The River

Cox Radio, just a few days after coming out with relatively strong summer ratings numbers, is suffering revenue dropoffs like virtually every media outlet. The result: targeted cutbacks today in staff.

Among the on-air people who are gone. (The announcements were made to the respective staffs at 1:30 p.m. today.)

marjorie225.jpg

Marjorie Coley(right) News director and morning news reader for Kiss 104.1 since 2000. Veronica Waters from WSB will do the morning news during the Tom Joyner show.

— Jeff Dantre, a veteran news reporter for WSB-AM

Kerry Browning, an assistant news director for WSB-AM who has been at the station for 30 years and has been heard on air for a bulk of that time.

— Stacy D. Night-time jock at Kiss 104.1. Program director Jay Dixon is set to take over.

Chris Miller Program director and mid-day host for 97.1/The River

Cox Radio is part of Cox Enterprises, which also owns the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

What will the River do with out their PD? Who will be responsible for the 250 song playlist that never changes. Who will handle the personnel moves there? Oh that’s right they just hired Kaedy Kiely and everything else is voice-tracked.

How does this effectJordan Graye AKA Kate McCarthy?

I bet we’ll get some witty banter from “Chuck Deskins” and “Randall Bloomquist” on here pretty soon. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get a reference to Colonel Klink.

So they fired people at 750am, but one of them wasn’t that dullard Herman Cain? Here’s my list of who SHOULD be fired in Atlanta radio in general, AM in particular:

  1. Jon Kincaid, 680am

The single most boring, predictable, and repetitive sports guy in history.

  1. Herman Cain

  2. WSB am programming director

Don’t know their name, but this station is awfully stale. That Hannity stuff is MINDLESS (“You’re an American. I’m an American. Joe the plumber. Bob the builder. You’re an American. I’m an American”). And who was the guy they canned before Cain (at night)? That guy was awful.

  1. Did I mention Kincade? That guy really stinks. Between him, Herman Cain and all the mindless Hannity/Glenn Beck garbage, I finally broke down and went with XM radio. No more insufferable Home Depot ads.

Many thanks to Jeff Dantre who has been an excellent reporter for years. He’ll be missed and a loss for the station.

Re: WSB. Fire a newsman (Jeff Dantre) and leave Neel Boortz? Incredible. I love Jamie Dupre’s analyses at noon, but I have to suffer through Boortz’s rants to hear him. It also seems that every time I tune in to get traffic reports, I have to listen to Boortz either advertising something or ranting lies about politics, e.g. that Obama is going to remove talk radio from the air. Don’t I wish!

Randall Bloomquist could only hope for the ratings he got when he took over GST w/ Hughes, Kimmer.

How this guy remains in the industry is a complete enigma and mystery.

…And the empty suits that look at GST’s long-term ratings crash and keep Bloomquist around are more ignorant.

Well good…..maybe they will make Kaedy the Program Director at “The River” and turn it into a REAL Classic Rock station. Unlike Chris Miller, she knows that Skynyrd recorded more than two songs, the Allman Brothers did more than one, and Supertramp wasn’t that great of a band in the first place and don’t deserve to have their songs played EVERY 15 FRIGGIN’ MINUTES! If I have to to hear that “Logical Song” one more time I’m gonna puke!

There are NO good radio stations in Atlanta. The music stations play only hits. Rocker understands. Most decent bands recorded more than 2 songs. It’s only going to get worse if the Dems take over. They have already committed to shutting down talk radio. After that, all we’ll have is 98.5, the River and sports talk. XM is looking pretty good.

I’d say ‘nothing surprises me anymore’, but this stuff has been going on for a long time. Kerry Browning? Jeff Dantre? Geez, these are solid proven professionals that’ve been around forever. But, in today’s world, quality and/or loyalty makes little difference. The market’s too spread out to accurately measure who listens to what, so management makes random decisions like this without thought to their audience. They like to blame the XMs and CD players and whatever for losing audiences, but the truth is greed and corporate no-goods are what killed radio. Talk is about all I’ll listen to anymore, and it’s been reduced to a few bland, rehashing pretty boys (except for Boortz, on the pretty thing). THAT novelty wore off a while back. The thing about Kimmer was his local touch/humor, people actually talked about ‘what the Kimmer said today’. As for music radio, there’s not ONE personality that’s given the license to do a show worthy of listening to. Can you imagine what would happen if someone played, oh I dunno, “London Town” or “South City Midnight Lady” “Wasted Time”, to name a measley few. Wanted: Program Manager for major market radio station. Must be willing to do as told, no matter how contrary to logic it may seem. No other skills required.

Hey GetitRight, how are the “dems” going to shut down talk radio? How exactly would that work? Are they going pass some law that would do that? Last time I looked, we have this little thing called Freedom of Speech and something else called ratings. But beyond that, do you see everything in life as a matter of politics? You are sad human if that’s the way you really see things.

By Harvey

October 23, 2008 11:21 AM | Link to this

Dave in Marietta, there has been talk of the possibility of reimposing the Fairness Doctrine, originally an FCC rule. For many years, the Fairness Doctrine, which required radio and tv stations (but not newspapers or other media, because the FCC did not have jurisdiction over them) to present all sides of every issue. So much for Freedom of Speech. In practice, that meant that if you gave 15 minutes to a Republican or Democrat point of view, you also needed to give 15 minutes to each and every other viewpoint, whether it be communist, socialist, totalitarian or whatever. Very few stations wanted to open themselves up to claims that they had not presented this or that viewpoint, and as a result, shows with opinion were few and far between. It was only with the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 that talk radio as we know it began to florish.

Would somebody please hire Kimmer, Wayne, Jim Gosset, and Pete Davis. And please put them on a station that can be heard outside the perimeter. Add Phil Hendrie to that mix and you have the start of a decent radio station. Yes John Kincaid is repetitive and predictable but Buck Belue makes up for it every time he says “How bout them Cowboys”. His south Ga. drawl is refreshing next to John’s Yankee screech.

I’m glad that Chris Miller got canned…here’s a note to the next PM for The River…update the station announcements (the words “THE NEW” need to be banished for good) and for the love of all that is rational STOP PUTTING A BUMPER BETWEEN EACH AND EVERY SONG. Do that and mix in a few more tunes and you’ll have a much better station!

This morning, while listening to the Tom Joyner morning show, I realized they found someone who tried to sound like Marjorie Coley, but it was not the same. I hope KISS 104.1 realizes they will loose alot of loyal listeners with this decision, who considered their anchors an extension of themselves and the negative affect it will have on their morning and evening ratings.

By TG

October 23, 2008 4:58 PM | Link to this

Constance: Let us look at what might be considered argumentative about your comment.

  1. Most listeners do not base the loyalty to a 4-hour morning radio program on someone who reads the news for a few minutes at the top and the bottom of the hour.

  2. Marjorie only read the news in the a.m. and not the p.m., so, if you assertion were correct, how would her departure impact the station’s ratings anytime after her last news brief at 9a.m.?

I’m just saying……

Mr Ho, you seem to pick and choose who is more important in the Atlanta market and it’s apparent in most of your articles. Stacy D former host of Kiss 104.1 Slow Jams was the top rated evening on air personality in this market for the last 5 years and not once have you ever acknowledged this brother until he gets laid off.

TG….Ms. Coley did more than just the news at the top and bottom of the hour as you stated. Constance is correct because apparently she knows that Marjorie does a lot for the community also….and if you listen to KISS 104.1 you would have known that THERE IS NO EVENING NEWS argue about that!

TG:

Obviously, you are not aware of the commitment and the good things she has done outside of delivering the radio news at the top of the hour (so you say).

I have met her and witnessed the community service she has performed while representing a station.

The same station that chose to release staff members in spite of their job performance (I’m not surprised that you don’t have a problem with that).

Her departure will have an impact as far as I am concerned and they will notice the decrease in their fan base.

Have a nice day !!!

DeeCee - Since you did not comprehend what I wrote, I conveyed the fact that Marjorie Coley only read news in the a.m. during the TJMS. And for the record, I am quite familiar with Kiss 104 from the days when the station’s dial setting was 104.7 to where it is presently located at 104.1. And I am also quite familiar with Marjorie from as far back as her time with Mike Roberts and Carol Blackmon when they were doing the morning show at V-103. Also, does capitalizing the last part of your post make you feel good? You sure put me in my place. Oh, you might want to run the spell/grammar check before posting your comments.

TG, are you a woman beater and woman hater? Do you abuse your significant other or are you just a woman who dislikes women altogether? What is your problem with Ms. Coley, sure sounds like you have an issue with her job performance and community involvement! Such a negative response when your far fetched preconception and ideas that you responded to. The history about Ms. Coley is far from what is known about the former News Director of the station. You may have mental issues and should not participate in putting people down that you do not know.

I received a XM radio tuner in June, and not looked back. This will be the future of radio. I thought it was mp3 files, but even having a lot, there is still music missed, and the ability to get news is important. Fact is for the most part there is a significant quality component that XM has tapped into and when playing music from the respective decades, they bring other elements as well that make it truly a decade.. I feel for cutbacks, but if your going to play crap your going to be crap and it’s starting to come back to haunt the radio market in a big way.
