10/28: Bye Bye Dave FM morning show again: Zakk Tyler & Jane out after 10 months

zakk-and-jane-2008-1.jpg

Shocking nobody at all, Dave FM appears to have dumped its latest morning show featuring Zakk Tyler and Jane Monzures after just 10 months on the air and ratings that didn’t appear to show any traction.

The team is no longer on the Web site, which pretty much says it all. Tim Orff, who had been part of the temporary morning show in 2007 with Holly Firfer, is off nights and back in mornings. It will be a more music-focused morning show to contrast with, say, the Regular Guys on Rock 100.5 or any other morning show that focuses on personalities.

To virtually anybody listening to Dave FM in the mornings this year, it was fairly evident Zakk was never cut out for this type of job from day one. Nice guy but simply not a morning personality. He wasn’t a music expert and only seemed to perk up when talking about football. (He had helped do pre and post-game coverage for the Falcons games). I’ll have to call Mike Wheeler, the program director, Tuesday to find out what compelled him to hire Tyler in the first place. You have to feel bad for sweet Jane because Tyler convinced her to move from Chicago.

Ratings a year ago were no great shakes under Holly & Orff but they really didn’t improve under Zakk & Jane either. In fact, the summer numbers among 25 to 54 year olds were the worst Dave FM has seen in its four-year history with the rock station ranked just 18th behind the likes of Imus on 106.7/True Oldies, the now defunct A Team on Hot 107.9 and even the Morning Mess over at Star 94.

92.9 has been cursed worse than virtually any other signal in Atlanta when it comes to trying to find a successful, long-term morning show along the lines of Frank & Wanda, Steve & Vikki and the Bert Show. Since it became a rock station in 1989, the station has funnelled through more than a dozen morning show incarnations, none of which lasted longer than three years.

The new morning show is “music focused,” which means Orff won’t be doing much talking. No prank calls, no call ins, minimal gab. More music is a smart alternative for any station seeking a low-cost, low-risk way to get ratings, especially since good personalities are difficult to find and cultivate and require a level of patience many radio companies in this tight economy may lack.

Thank goodness. I never could figure out why radio stations in ATL assume people want to listen to barely-amusing personalities in the morning instead of some music. Its like they are obsessed with it, and forget about what the audience actually wants to hear.

Praise the lord! please please please change the format to music-first! I am sick of these egomaniacs blathering about nonsense every morning. the fake and forced laughter from the show galleries is the most disgusting part of it! The regular guys obviously draw their name from the fact that they make me want to purge! The giant show sucks terribly. I cannot force myself to continue as I feel nauseous thinking of these glib fools. Their drivel is killing our society!

I am SOO SOO SOO glad Zakk Tyler is off the air. I love Dave FM but the only time I couldn’t bear to listen to it is in the mornings when the Morning Show was on. And the reason? His annoying, nasally voice. Man, am I glad he’s gone!

Sucks to lose a job right before Xmas. Oh well…it’s the business. DAVE is probably watching the RIVER’s ratings and think “if that iPod on shuffle can do well…what are we doing paying all these people”.

YESSSSS!!!!!!! I love Orff and so glad to hear him back in the Mornings.

As to Jimmy Baron’s short stint on Dave, that was so painful to hear - he’s really lost it for being a radio personality. Let Jimmy stay wherever Jimmy has been, as long as it’s not on-air at Dave.

Zakk & Jane, all I can say is what took TPTB at Dave so long to boot them? It was painfully obvious they knew nothing about Atlanta, about Georgia, or had any ties to anything in the South. Hope they get a one-way ticket to their northern roots. I’m just so thrilled they’re not making my ears bleed anymore!

MORE ORFF!!! Let him do some of his impersonations and bounce off Denzel - they are hilarious together!

I am glad that Zakk is gone. He just didn’t seem to have the charm, charisma, personality required to carry the morning show that they were attempting. He needs to host a sports program. Jane never seemed like she had the opportunity to let her psonality shine. I have listened to the station for years & been there thru all the changes. Recently I had begun to turn down the volume of my work radio until I knew it was time for Mara’s show to begin. * Now Mara — she is awesome — GREAT ENTERTAINMENT W/ MARA. LOVE HER !!! *

Dave FM,

I’m available for mornings!! Morning radio is my thing and, if selected, will garauntee a huge market share. How about some Def Leopard, Nugent, Aerosmith (the good stuff), music that wakes you up and makes advertisers want to buy spots, instead of making about the personality? Whoa, what about some Ozzy, Stone Temple Pilots, and AC/DC??

Oh, and the morning show has to have folks on it that gives a damn about the local scene and the concerts that go on in town. You know, just like my handle, “Ole Skool radioman.” Have a voice, but let the music do the talking. Besides, ain’t nothing like a Black Rocker. What about Mother’s Finest, Atlanta Rythm Section, and some Doobie’s (and no not Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane, and Old Blackwater). There is tons of music out there that DOES NOT GET PLAYED because of the laziness of the the Music/Program Directors. People want the music. A station that they can identify with. A station that becomes a part of their lives. Call me Dave FM.

No Barnes, No Jimmy (sorry Butch W aka….”sugarbuzz”) No more forced laughter, and be real and ind some that is this town, whole town, not down town. Most of us live outside the city, and never enter ITP. Star 94 morning makes an abortion look like a bake sale. The Bert show is ok, 95.5 …look in the mirror, you are wite ppl trying to act gangsta…its just silly. For now Regular Guys 3.0 is where I am. I hated their 1.0, and 2.0, but they have it dialed in now. I liked MJ in the morning from Tampa also, he is honestly interesting, thinks a little outside the norm, and is not what 92.9 always does (that always fails) Just my $.02

October 28, 2008 9:50 AM | Link to this

As I was just getting used to Zack/Jane, they got fired. Jane could be a success at this station with another host. She is not annoying. I like the new music oriented format. I love satellite radio, and for free radio, the 97River and new DaveFM mostly music format is good. In the morning, just music to get me going, traffic and weather. Winy voices are a no in the a.m. Don’t want to hear about your personal lives either, DJs! DaveFM has been my morning show for several years now, have tried others, came back and have no reason to change the dial.

The biggest problem with finding good hosts for morning shows is that there are few smaller markets in which jocks can work up their chops anymore. Typically, they are on satellite or totally computerized with drops pre-produced and dropped in. The biggest problem with ratings for Dave FM has nothing to do with the personalities, it has to do with the drastic music change from the Classic Rock format that many people found comfortable. Most of what I have heard on Dave FM is stuff I wouldn’t consider buying, it’s background noise. May as well listen to Muzak from the 70’s.

More music? I’m gonna have to give it a try. When I’m driving my daughter to school in the morning our game is “How many buttons will we have to push before we hear some music?” It’s usually 7 or 8 and it’s usually the country station that’s actually playing music. And you know what’s really NOT funny is radio personalities laughing at their own jokes.

Dave FM: How about if you are going to have a talk show instead of music centered show in the morning, you have a CONTEST? bring in LOCAL personalities from the public (pre-screen and audition them of course) for a period of one week each to sit with Orff and “try out” Then, have the listeners vote to see which one was the most likable and entertaining?

Zakk was at 93.3 the planet (rock station) in Greenville, SC for a while. I liked him there and I liked him here. He was just on the wrong kind of station. It’s bad when he has to do segments that cater to the gays (like the bachelor pad makeover)of this town. He is well versed in music, but he needs soemthing more classic, not the soft/pop rock being played by dave. Did anyone notice he was mixing in STP along with REM? He needs to be on a station more like 96.1. Those guys over there need the axe. They suck. A friend referred to them as audibly raping the listening public. Besides, nobody is going to be completely familiar with a city when they just moved here. All of you transplants from the north should know that. Barnes blows, along as Jimmy Barron. There is a reason they were canned from 99X. They suck. Maybe I’m just nostalgic that, along with Stephany Fisher on WGCL, Zakk was someone I am familiar with from back home.

I just want them to STFU and play a song! Who wants to hear stupid yammer as we drag ourselves from the warmth of contented sleep into the harsh, cold world? (Hellooooo? Song, song, song, quick weather & traffic, song. Was that so hard?)

My impression was that they were always dumbing it down to be cute, to fit in with the ignorant masses. “Ooooo, stay tuned, we’re going to talk about what we saw on Dancing with the Stars last night!” Are you kidding me? WhyTF would I want to hear THAT before coffee? They were both very Palinesque in how they, via the magic of audio only, managed to convey the crinkled nose of confusion whenever any subject arose that requires more than an IQ of 80 to comprehend. “WHO watched that John Adams miniseries? Oh yeah, my brother in law. He’s such a geek.” The world is filled with DUMBA—ES! A good morning crew spare us in our hour of transition to the day, STFU, and play a bleep bleep SONG!

I have also had a Voice-Over career for the past 2 years recording instructional CD Roms. My voice is a smooth Bari-tone sound. I also know that I could not do any worse than Zack Tyler did. It’s time to drop the pretentious “DAVE” moniker, too. Just become a straight ahead rock station and your ratings will get better. I tried out DAVE when it first made the switch from Z93, and after about one day of listening to their awful playlist, I have literally NEVER given them another listen. Acoustic crap and U2 songs don’t do it for me.

This city needs a good rock station. A station that plays 80’s metal, some 90’s rock, some southern rock from the 70’s. Why is this so damn difficult to understand??

NO ELTON JOHN. NO EAGLES. NO FLEETWOOD MAC. NO YES (that’s mildly confusing, but I decree it nonetheless).

Give us MUSIC in the morning….good classic rock, something to wake us up! I love olskool radio guy’s playlist including Mothers Finest, ARS, etc…throw in some Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie, etc blast from the past… and dig the vaults for good oldies from Uriah Heep, Rush, Traffic, Trapeze, Lou Reed, and so forth…stuff other stations don’t or won’t play. DO NOT bring back the Greaseman or any other syndicated idiot. I want MUSIC!!! My teenagers spend all my money so I cant afford an ipod of my own….and I don’t like the Canned voice on the River (although I do like their playlist best of any of the locals)

More music is the safe avenue, but honestly, if I want to listen to more music, I’ll program it myself on my iPod. Radio used to be interesting. Now it’s shock humor or cheap jokes. It’s style over substance.

I’m on board with Rick and Bubba. They are interesting and funny with no cheap laughs that might appeal to middle school mentalities. I listen to them online, so I personally don’t care what Dave does - except that it might bring some substance back for others.

I couldnt agree with the Howard Stern posts any more! He brought over 5 million listeners to Sirius and is the only real talent on the radio today. Thank God I decided to pay for Sirius, if I had to listen to one more Jack Johnson song followed up with 3 John Mayer songs on DAVE FM I might have stabbed myself in the ears with a dirty butter knife already. I used to have DAVE FM on my alarm clock, but between then I realized that the combination of boring hosts and the same lame music day after day was actually putting me into a deeper sleep.

Nice to see “Radio Talk” on this blog again instead of second tier, trash TV.

Same problem gets worse. Radio chasing demographics that care and less and less about them as a medium every year, while ignoring the folks that want to listen to radio.

106.7 is fine after the Imus show is over.

The River seems to be expanding its play list some, but they need to get it up to ~1000.

I actually don’t mind the Regular Guys “bathroom humor” at 6 in the morning, because that’s where I am.

I briefly switched to DaveFM after Steve and Vikki were off the air from Star 94. I refuse to EVER listen to that station again. I can’t stand the current morning show…it truely is a MESS!! Not to mention the personalites are lacking and ugly to boot. Zakk Tyler…couldnt stand his voice. THANK GOD The Regular Guys are back on the air. They single handedly saved my morning commute. I nearly invested in satellite radio OR actually jumped on the iPod bandwagon..which thankfully I still havent done.

I do like TRG, but I do like music as well. Gets me going in the morning. I did like the music format of DaveFM, so I may put it back on my program list to switch to when TRG are just talking too much, being too rediculous or if the stupid mocking commercials of D. Gellar and Son come on, which I cant freaking stand and no matter what station I have on, I always turn it when their commercials come on.

Never has a radio station made me so p** off. What should be a no brainer in terms of an intelligent music oriented station in Atlanta, is a hybird of inane dj’s and little music.

Forget Mara-who wants to hear her mom on the air ? Radio Free Lunch ? WTF is that ? Is it free ? Is it lunch ? Make it commerical free and that would rock. And Mara, lay off the commericals you do; they suck and just show what a sell out you are.

And whoeever mentioned WXRT in this discussion. Mr Dave FM program director, listen to some of their tapes. WXRT is a fine example of what Dave FM should strive to be. No needless DJ chatter. intelligent music discussion. no gossip reading straight from the drudgereport, support of local bands and lots of music.

and hey dave fm, respecting the music means NOT talking over it. let the songs begin and end. you do not talk over the music. period. to me that is the biggest sign that they don’t have a clue there.

phew i feel better to vent.

btw the river has it right. ok their play list ins’t the best, but they absolutely respect the listener in terms of dj chatter and other junk. way to go river, you get my ear more that dave fm.

I love DAVE-FM, but most of their hiring moves puzzle the hell out of me.

It was obvious the day it was even announced that Zakk didn’t fit the mold of the station. Then to pass on Steve Craig was a huge blunder. To me, it seems like this Wheeler fellow is trying to go against the grain to put his mark on the station, but all he’s doing is causing it to not reach its potential.

Now, it seems to me that it’d be a good move to go hire Jimmy Baron for the morning shift (yet still keep the focus mainly on music), so I doubt it’ll be considered.

DAVE used to be my favorite and the only station I would listen too when 99x turned teeny. Ever since then, Dave has turned into an organinc acoustic-guitar centered station. How much Jon Mayer, James Blunt, Deathcab and James Morrison can we listen too? They’ve lost it. As for me, XM in my new car is paid for for another year, and I haven’t turned on ATL FM in 7 months! This is the morning format that made Dave FM successful in the first place. At the time it launched there was very little talk and a great selection of music. Once it got to the point where I didn’t hear a single song during my 20-minute commute I tuned out. Unless a station has world-class, can’t-miss morning show personalities, it will be far better off sticking to music. People like music, advertisers like people, radio stations make their money off advertising. Simple concept!

First, I love the station Dave FM as a whole. Mara Davis makes me laugh every day! Now that this change has happened I still feel that most of the ATL stations need to realize this is still the South (even though it is a true melting pot) and I have not heard a new personality that really connects with me a Georgia born listener in ages. From Zakk, the Morning Mess and most of the Bert Show none of them seem to be able to do this.

Dave FM is a great radio station when it focuses on playing music. Mara Davis is the best DJ (very knowledgable) I will continue to listen as long as they don’t try to compete with those stupid morning shows

This is a big loss for radio. I listened to Zakk because I really enjoyed his show even though I do not like the music mix on Dave FM. Now there is absolutely no reason to listen to the station. Ten months is not enough time for anybody to get a foothold in a new market or to move ratings. Dave FM’s loss…

Thank goodness. Wish no ill on Zakk, (or anyone in this economy) but the guy was here how long and he still pronounced the city AtlanTTa (dude, drop the second T) and the team was the FaLLcuns. Unbelievably annoying and clearly he didn’t sync with this market. Radio is all about the voice, and the personality, and both were just sorely lacking. Let the music play — a good solution.

All the DJ’s in Atlanta are terrible. Don Imus is terrible. Oppie and Anthony are beyond terrible. I have Sirius. I listen to Howard every morning and Bubba the Love Sponge every afternoon. Bubba the Love Sponge does a “free radio” show out of Tampa that is also picked up in Jacksonville. He is #1 in both markets. Bring him here and you have a shot. My recomendation to everyone is to just cough up the 2 days in lunch money and get Sirius for the year.

Hey now, how about a little compassion these are human beings we are talking about. There are more polite ways to give your opinion then tearing down someone else. Think about if this was your brother or sister or best friend. Criticism is a part of life everyone gets that but do we have to be so brutual? is this what our country has become? Hate breeders?

If you really want to improve morning ratings get The Greaseman back - I think he’s crude at times (no, often) but he sure drew a crowd. The problem with Dave-fm is - it has sucked since taking over the old Z-93. Hey - does anybody remember Ross and Wilson from Z-93s heyday in the late 70s?? Of course, they were fired for a mean spirited comment that I will not go into, but if you were in the ATL in the late 70s early 80s you know what I’m talking about. But there were hardley any better radio duo than those guys.

Hey Mr. Dave FM Program Director - see how many of us are begging for a more creative playlist and less blabber in the morning? Now’s your chance to do the right thing. Let Orff be himself and play what he wants. You’ll get a much better show for it. Come to think of it, let all the DJs on your station have some creative play input.

There is very little on air talent available anywhere, not just in Atlanta. Dave FM is lucky to have Mara Davis but she knows when to stop talking and play the music. The Regular Guys are a new find for me and they are usually quite funny, especially with the addition of Southside Steve. They are probably the only morning show that I can listen to because they are actually capable of quite a few laughs.

WOW. Atlanta is tough. Zakk & Jane didn’t have enough time to unpack and settle. I don’t like hearing a ton of chatter in the AM either, but I started listening to DAVE FM because they played a mix of old and new music- even the old music was FRESH. I think this station is falling into the habit of playing the same music over and over again. I had a day off a couple of weeks ago and listened to the same song NINE times between 8am - 8pm. The only reasons I keep listening to this station is for the noon hour and the 5pm to 6pm hour. That’s the only time during the week we get away from the programmed routine. I like the advice from the guy that mentioned XRT. That truly is a station that knows what it is doing. I wish Zakk & Jane only the best. You never had a chance here, sorry.

Mara Davis “knows when to stop talking and play the music”??? Since when??? Now that Zakk is gone, if it weren’t for Mara, I’d tune to Z93 during the day. Mara talks way too much about nothing whatsoever and takes way too long to make any point when she talks.

When she and Dunham were on Z93 mornings, I listened as she stepped all over an interview with Alex Cooley. And, when Dunham got the chance to interview Stephen King, and was SO obviously in awe, instead of allowing Dunham his moment, she had to break in and ask some stupid question that was totally out of context with the purpose of Stephen King’s interview in the first place.

So, please don’t tell me how great and wonderful Mara is. She apparently knows where the bodies are buried.

I really do feel sorry for Zak and Jane - losing a job sucks, and there’s a good chance they have a non-compete that will keep them out of the Atlanta market. I never really liked their show, but I don’t think it was any better or worse than any of the other stupid morning commute shows.

I’m sure one of the reasons Zak got the job was his NFL knowledge, since DAVE lost the use of local boy Matt Chernoff last Thanksgiving when he was canned by 790The Zone (but you can now hear him in the mornings on 680AM).

I like Orf well enough, and he’s local so that’s a bonus; Sully’s show got better when they took away the 80s hour every day, Margot’s show is always good to hear. I love the Radio Free Lunch (though if you think that it’s a break from DAVE’s playlist guidelines you are fooling yourself). What I actually need from Mara is less talk about what was on the TV, because I’m going to get that from people at work (and tune it out there, too).

For all you people complaining that Atlanta doesn’t have a “real” rock station, complaining to DAVE is pointless, they’re officially “Adult Album Alternative” - Atlanta has 96.1, 97.1 and 100.1 - if you don’t like what those “Classic Rock” format stations are playing, complain to them, since complaining to DAVE is like calling the Falcons to let them know you think te Braves middle relief sucks.

Along with everyone else I’m for more music, I’ll get my news and entertainment online, thankyouverymuch.

That might be the way to go, actually - improve the website with current affairs and entertainment news and drive people to listen online at work.

Come on, DAVE, think creatively about who your listeners are, and where we actually live.

I also think that Zakk was awful, so much so that I switched to The Bert Show. I think people should have a clue whether they are right for a job before they take it. Jimmy Barron and Yvonne hosted this past summer and they were awesome!! I loved Jimmy when he was on 99x with Leslie and Barnes and definitely think he would bring life back to the station! Please re-hire him with Yvonne or Leslie! Also the format changed somehow this past year and I dont even have it saved anymore in my car. It is too mellow now! Please go back to 80s, 90s and 2000’s Rock! Since we dont have 99x anymore on the radio we need something to fill that void while riding in car. It was a good mix of older rock my age group (30s) grew up with but not the oldies that has been played out to much over the years! So much music out there that needs to be played. Variety is the best in radio!

Mornings on Atlanta radio have long been boring orations of mindless dribble. I preferred Orff and his music-centric program, and then Dave FM blew its point-of-difference for more witless, oral defecation. As one who has lived in other major markets nationwide, I have enjoyed those major morning shows for what they were: local to their market. Godspeed to Zakk, but he needed to go if Dave FM’s credo of ‘music matters here’ has any chance of being adhered to. Orff is local, Orff has a following (myself included), and Orff is relevant to the programming and spirit of what Dave FM originally set itself out to be. Congratulations, Orff! Welcome home.
