Step outside of Atlanta, you’re truly in Georgia. This once rural county, is now booming with new homeowners. Arbor Place Mall seems to want to keep anyone other than the hicks that have lived in the area for 30 or more years away. She should sue for discrimination. The cynic in me wants to point out that nowhere in this article does it state he DIDN’T steal it. it just points out that he was accused and thinks it’s because of the color of his skin. If the answer to “Did you take that?” is “Why are you asking me that, is it because I’m black?” - that’s not a no, that’s called avoiding the question because you don’t want to give the answer.

If he had a receipt for the shirt, there should have been no problem. The fact that security kept them there for “hours” would seem to indicate that he couldn’t produce a receipt. In which case, he looks like a thief, no matter what color he is.

Alot of you may sit here and have the advantage of being cynical and condescending about this situation because it has never happened to you, but it is no joke. I have never stolen anything in my life, served my country, and pay my taxes and I had this something similar happen to me at Cumberland Mall (the Wilson’s Leather store) back in the 90’s and I’ve seen it done to others. I just came into the mall at the entrance below that store and walk into the shoe store that is right there when you come in. My buddies and I were looking at some shoes and I remember right before I walked in a white lady was staring at me funny from upstairs by the Wilson Leather Co. store while we were walking into the shoe store, but I thought nothing of it. I haven’t been in the mall five minutes and next thing you know I’m surrounded by five security guards and this same woman was there claiming she had me on video tape stealing a leather hat from her store which was complete lie. I was so embarrassed. They threatened me and made an attempt to detain me. When they said they’d call the cops, I insisted that they do and show them this alleged video. One young punk security tried to grab me and all hell broke loose because I was beyond p** off and luckily one of the older security guards realized that this was going to end badly and urged me from going the #@$% off. Then after speaking with the lady from that store realized there was no tape and she just picked me out of a crowd because she thought it might have been me. This whole thing took two hours and was beyond ridiculous and I have never visted Cumberland Mall since. I’m not saying this was a racist thing, but an ignorant thing. I’m sure there have been blacks, whites, latinos or whoever stealing from that mall all the time because shoplifting does exist, but to go about embarrassing someone when you are not 100% sure they did it like that over a f-ing hat is just plain stupid. I promise you someone was going to get hurt that day and it wasn’t going to be me. I will never forget that and will never shop at that mall or any Wilson Leather goods store again. You people can make fun or be sarcastic all you want, but I wish I could be there to see how funny it is when someone does that to you.

Having been to Arbor Place a lot and seeing the security that they have there, this is no great surprise to me. Often I was followed around mall in years past (when I was in my early 20s) from store to store. It was really weird. They don’t seem to be the brightest crayons in the box, either.

It’s just sad to me that the first conclusion that someone jumps to is that he stole the shirt. Couldn’t possibly be that he might have the money to BUY a nice shirt, right?

I use to live in Villa Rica so I shopped at Arbor Place when it first opened a few years ago. It was nice back then but now its like Greenbriar and Gwinnett Place, thugs, ghetto hoes and hood rats all go to these malls and shop. Now I live near Chateau Elan and shop at Mall of Ga. It hasnt gotten that bad yet, I guess all of the hood rats and thugs cant afford to shop at the nicer malls, where the white folks work to keep them nice. Please sue Arbor Place Mall, youre a young black woman with nothing better to do than throw your race card. And while youre at it, vote for Obama, he will make sure you never have to work, you pathetic piece of crap.

What i’m tired of in the racist whole mess is the assumption that just because I do not support Mr. Obama, I must be a racist. There are PLENTY of white folks I won’t support either. I don’t look at a person’s skin color for anything more than as a part of their physical description… i look to their words, their actions, their deeds, their character and morals, or lack thereof, to decide whether or not i like them … or would support them, in this case. I personally don’t think Mr. Obama is ready for the position for which he is “applying”. I’m entitled to that opinion, and to speak it. You, on the other hand, are equally entitled to your opinion and the right to speak it.

Why must it be about race? or anything else which is superficial? It is only about race if you MAKE it about race, which far too many people do, unfortunately.

Was the security guard white or black - that is not in the story. Would seem to be important in her claim of racism.

I agree that some blacks perpetuate the victim mind set. Some whites are still back in the 1940s or 1840s as far as their thinking on race issues. We need to keep repeating “we are members of the HUMAN race” and stick together. We are all the same — the good, the bad and the ugly. There are stereotypes within all the races and religions. We need to rise above on a personal level, teach our children well, and at some point, prejudice will evolve out of the HUMAN race.

I’m not surprised about hearing this. I remember going to Arbor Place way back in 2001 while still attending Ga Tech. As I was leaving the mall, a security guard stopped me, and forced me to empty my pockets and bags. After seeing that I had no stolen goods on my person, I asked him if it would be okay if I returned all the merchandise I did purchase, or would I have to be frisked again on the way out. He was speechless, and I have never stepped foot on that mall’s property again.

What I seemed to miss here was whether or not he did it. Mall stores have cameras. Were charges filed? I also failed to see any smoking gun proving the store’s reason to investigate this was because he’s black. Again, was he charged? If they investigated and let him go, it flies in the face of being racially motivated because it would seem that, if this was the case, they’d simply frame him. If they are conducting these investigations based on race, it would seem that the writer of this story would be able to show a pattern of this through the stories of a number of others that have been treated this way. I’ve been questioned before when I didn’t steal. I’m white and the people investigating were white, so it’s apparent that people can be investigated for things they didn’t do without the motive of the investigating party being racism.

It’s so sad to read blogs such as this where people who don’t know each other make judgments about the other’s characters. Unfortunately, virtually every person posting here (including myself) has prejudices. We may or not act on them, but they’re there (sad). I think what needs to be repeated here is the old lesson of not judging books by their covers.

Lastly, this story, as written, should have never been published. It tarnishes everyone involved with no proof that anyone involved did anything wrong. Lazy, irresponsible, sloppy journalism. No wonder the AJC’s readership figures are dropping like a rock.

First-When I go to Arbor Mall, the majority of shoppers are African-American. It’s statistics, people. Reach into a bag with 75 black marbles and 25 white marbles and you’re more likely to grab a black one! Is it really ‘racist’ that he was nabbed or just statistics? Second-The question we need to be answering…did he steal it? This really wasn’t answered, was it? It seems as if the real issue is being avoided.

Look folks I don’t know if this was racism or not. It sounds like to me it was. We can all sit here and come up with stories to support both sides. Facts are that the prison system is overflowing and over 75% of the inmates are black. This doesn’t mean that only 25% of all crime is commited by white folks. It just means that over 75% of people that get prosicuted are black. All the media seems to report is crime committed by blacks. Be this because of poverty or racism or both I don’t know. Racism does exist in this Nation and it is from all sides of the fence. We need to educate our children and raise them with morals and standards. Racism and hate starts at home. So the cure is to stop it at home. The cure is not affirmative action. The cure is not black scholorship funds. These things just make the race that does not receive this benefit resent the race that does. That is only human nature. We are one country with hundres of races. Everyonce comes here because of the fredoms that we all share. So let’s raise our children properly and racism and crime will fall. Everybody is entitled to his/her own opinions and that makes us all unique. Unfortunately, black people are blamed for everything, calling racist, ignorant, etc. I’m not sure. Everytime their has been a “cry wolf” complaint, the perpetraitor has always been described as a black male. Remember the case in South Carolina when the lady drowned her own children. Remember she lied to the police saying her kids were kidnapped by a black male. Remember recently the case with the young lady saying a black man carved a “B” in her face, now it has been proven that she lied. This country is racist and the black man is blamed for everything. Black men has it very bad in this country, although they’re not the only ones who commit crime. Crime has no color, no sex, no age. Hey Idiot Ron, there is no such thing as an “All-black college” either. They are historically Black because that’s the only place we were allowed to go before we FORCED integration. It’s still shocking and sickening for me to read people’s open hostility and racist comments toward African-Americans and minorities in general. What is it that you are lacking that makes you so unhappy with yourselves that you project your negativity on others? Ghetto is not synonymous with black. Not all black women are w** (and w** come in every color anyway), nor do we all have babies’ daddys (some of us have one or more advanced degrees and no children, like myself). Not all of us come from families where fathers were not present and we lived off the ‘guvment’(my father is and always has been a very important part of my life, both my parents are college-educated, and they were so independent of the ‘guvment’ that I was able to attend private school-without scholarships or subsidies, for all the cynics out there). And regardless of one’s social demographic in childhood, it has become abundantly clear that one can transcend their circumstances and do well-children are quite resilient. Unfortunately, the opposite can also occur-those who had financially and (debatably) emotionally stable childhoods can become ignorant and hateful adults. I went to Arbor Place Mall once or twice several years ago, and I was not impressed-by the people or the shopping selection. And yes, I was one of the very few African-Americans shopping there when I went. White does not equal right or upscale-it just means white. Sorry. In regards to the malls in general, diversity isn’t the problem-in my opinion, it’s all the teenagers who hang out crowding stores when they’re not spending money. This is usually a problem at all malls.

This blog needs to end as it is just a forum for a bunch of angry black and white people. It’s funny because many of you are getting your jollies by saying online what you really want to say to the other race.

Chill-out, it is not that serious, these blogs or your opinions will not help those accused at all.

Share your opinions without hatred. Many are angry about the presidential campaign, why because it’s not going the way they expected. Anyone who is black is expected to vote for Obama. Has anyone weighed the facts of the candidates, Obama and McCain. Obama has run the cleanest campaign, no mud slinging vs. McCain who has been throwing buckets of mud. Obama is very intelligent and is looking out for the best interest of all, not just one group.

It is time for a change. I hope all of you angry people on the blog can find a way to cease this foolishness before I leave to go home. I don’t want to come in contact with you on the road.

Gee.

All this talk about who America really belongs to…the white or the blacks.

Once again, and as usual, my people and their tragic story are pushed back into obscurity.

Blacks complain about racism - how’s this for racism - how about having 90% of your people killed because the invading people wanted your land. I’d have rather had my people put into slavery and survived rather than being killed for their land.

And guess what - blacks and whites worked together, especially in the west, to “purge” the land of the “Indian problem”.

So forgive me if I shrug off the accusations of racism that everyone seems to be spouting here. Millions of my people are dead because of racism. Our society is lost to antiquity because someone else wanted our land.

Guess what y’all…we were here first. Why don’t y’all get out and let us have our nation back.

Lest you people forget, the Pilgrims, John Smith’s explorers, and the Lewis and Clark expedition would have failed and they would have all been dead had it not been for the people that had helped them along the way - the Native Peoples. And what thanks did we get?

this is crazy…well I don’t know if he actually stole the shirt or not..but I as a black women in her 20’s shops at Arbor Place very little because it looks dead most of the time…yes there are blacks, white, latinos, asian, etc. that shop in this mall..But I do have to admit the security is a little more pushy then needed because of the growth in the area with African Americans in Douglas County. I do believe that the security just made a really bad mistake thats it.

Look folks, this is real simple. There have always been two kind of negroes. There are house negroes and field negroes. Do not confuse the two. The house negroes are good (e.g. Obama) and the field negroes are bad (e.g Mike Tyson). Unfortunately the field negroes vastly out number the house negroes. Additionally it is difficult for a white man to tell the difference between a field negro and a house negro just by sight. My recommendation is that we label the filed negroes apparel with an FN symbol so we know who we are dealing with. I’m serious. I don’t think they would mind either. It would give them a sense of pride, while at the same time allowing the law abiding citizens to easily identify them.

The ignorant rants by the apparent hicks that live outside of Atlanta prove my point! As a white person, you’re born with a priviledge that you’re unaware of. Just look at how you’re responding to this. Some of you are taught to be racist, some of you watch a lot of TV and figure “all black people must be bad”. Then, there are those of you like my white friends that have grown up with blacks and know that they’re no different than you are. But we live “in the city” so we know better!

It’s hard to walk in another persons shoes and truly understand why they feel the way they do. How many times can you say that you haven’t been waited on because of your race? It’s happened to most black people. We get pulled over just because we are black. That’s not always the case, but we live in a society which treats anyone of color differently.

Sick of It you are stared at by women of color with your bi-racial child (hmmm….why not just call the child black. Isn’t that what you all call Obama?) is because many don’t like the idea of white women with black men. There is a truth to the notion that black men have longed for white women and vice versa. I’ve had this coversation many times before, and a lot of black women hate it. But that’s another story for another day.

And for the haters, Shyneka is pronounced that way in which it’s spelled, so it’s not dumb, it’s different. Everybody can’t be named Exxon and Apple!

There is a difference between shopkeepers privilege and unlawful restraint. IF they were going to charge these individuals with theft, it would have behooved them to call the police within 30 mins of detaining this couple. However, they waited several hours and that alone has put them in a precarious situation. I would file a civil complaint if I were these young people in question. Learn the law people!!! Things like this happen all of the time and the shopkeepers get away with it and do it quite often. Sue the hell out of them…I bet it stops then. Hahahahah This was written by a black woman with a sense of entitlement (according to the white people who wrote earlier.). You would hate to go one on one with me…I would eat you alive.

I am so deeply saddened by what i am reading. Going back to the original topic of the blog, i do agree that it was completely unfair for a paying customer to be detained for shoplifting. I can’t say it was because he was black (yes, i am black too);maybe it was because he was young. I am surprised that the store wouldn’t give a statement saying they made a mistake. Seems likr they know something went wrong and litigation might follow. That being said - I was raised in an upper middle class neighborhood with parents married over 30 years now. i have known ignorant people white and black, and i have also met exceptional people white and black. The stereotypes that you hear about blacks (lazy, uneducated, welfare receipients)only apply to a small minority of us. The same that all white people are not “evil” and “out to get us”. I just wish there could be more dialouge (sorry - spelling)between the races instead of us faulting each other for society’s woes.

wow this seems to be blown way out of proportion. If I remember correctly the majority of arbor place mall security is black! People are way too quick to throw out this race card. Is the guy in jail? No, what’s a few questions? Usually people that act like this are guilty… Think about it!

it’s no wonder America is in the shape its in now- w/ unemployment above 6%, banks closing etc, fuel costs, the war in Iraq etc. our citizens cant even get along and treat each other with respect. Be it white guilt or black entitlement it’s all wrong. As for Obama, Obama is far more intelligent that Sarah Palin (she got 840 on her SAT….wow) and John McCain (5th from the bottom of his class?) put together - don’t take my word for it, do the research but it doesn’t matter the color of his skin prevents you from being honest with yourselves and realizing that the GOP doesn’t care about the large majority of the bigots you find ranting and raving about “blacks” and “Obama” because well …they don’t make enough money! The GOP doesn’t represent your interests but they do PLAY THE WHITE RACE CARD and have been doing so since Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under McCain tax cuts WILL go only to the wealthy NOT the rich or middle class and yes moron rich and wealthy are two totally separate classes. If McCain’s insurance plan passes - good luck if you have any illnesses what so ever…you will not be able to get insured and if you do it will cost more than 5k. The Iraq INVASION/war will never end and consumer confidence will continue to slide as the recession spins out of control.

The comments in this blog are an awful testament to what is yet to come. This race thing has only just gotten started. This country is on the verge of possibly electing a (half) black man as president and people can’t have a civil discussion involving race. I am white. I have tried to raise my daughter to respect ALL races and cultures… she points out examples every day that make her ask, “Why bother? They don’t like me because I’m white!” God help us please.

Abandoning the scintillating and sensitive discussion of racism for a moment, let’s look at the actual subject of the post. Disclaimer: a good friend works at Arbor Place

I will be shocked if there’s a lawsuit… or any follow up to this publicity stunt. This was not profiling; this was not harassment; this was not random. Someone was in a store, they tried on several shirts, they bought three shirts and left the store. As they exited employees noticed: (1) the store sells the same shirt the customer was wearing as they exited; (2) the shirt had creases matching that of any shirt of that style in that store folded by employees as company policy; (3) minutes later a dressing room was found to contain tags removed from a store item; (4) also found in the dressing room was a discarded man’s shirt. (I was told the shirt he was wearing & the discarded shirt were even the same color.)

Who would YOU want to talk to?

Did he steal the shirt? No clue. If it’s a favorite store it’s no surprise that you might be shopping there wearing something you previously bought. No one remembered what dressing room he used- the theft could have occurred hours earlier.

What’s interesting is Miss Thing’s career is not going all that well- in the radio world afternoon drive to nights is a demotion- and the “Queen of Controversy” suddenly achieves face time on local t.v. news. Also interesting that she hasn’t commented or talked with any press since the initial report.

And no one has said “No, I didn’t steal the shirt.”

I was working the night Mizz Shyneka was accused of stealing—one of my co workers said he called the camera room to watch them—but said he was not sure if they had stole anything even when they left the store—Our store definitely has a problem with theft and the personnel that we have in the camera room often call when “suspicious” people come in the store—which are usually young African Americans or urban dressing White Kids—especially in the Polo area—I feel if you don’t have a person on camara stealing or no one saw them for sure take something—-there is no need to go after them once they leave the store as Mizz Shyneka and her boyfriend did—-there is always going to be profiling because young African Americans or the urban looking kids black or white—have been caught stealing in our store a number of times——this does not excuse someone being accused who did not take anything or where there was not proof of anything taken but with a lax security system in place and a large amount of thefts this is what happens
