11/6: CNN hologram mocked, explained
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Arguably the strangest gizmo of the night was on CNN: the “hologram.” It didn’t really add anything to the proceedings except a bizarre flashback to Princess Leia and R2D2 in “Star Wars.”
Jon Stewart had a field day mocking it Wednesday night, as did bloggers online since the technology was “unveiled.” Take Don Reisinger of the The Digital Home on Cnet:
Allow me to explain something to those who probably also get excited about buying a new hammer or watching a new Starbucks open up in their neighborhood: the “hologram” technique made the show look shoddy and stupid, and made Ms. [Jessica] Yellin look like a well-designed video game character.
Here’s engadget’s thoughts:
If you’ve been keeping your eyes fixed on CNN as this election unfolds, then by now you’ve seen Wolf Blitzer doing a “hologram” interview with Jessica Yellin. Not only does this technology seem completely creepy, but it’s without a doubt one of the most useless and unnecessary pieces of phantasmagoric TV ever enacted.
Gizmodo explains the technology:
-35 HD cameras pointed at the subject in a ring
-Different cameras shoot at different angles (like the matrix), to transmit the entire body image
-The cameras are hooked up to the cameras in home base in NY, synchronizing the angles so perspective is right
-Correspondents see a 37-inch plasma where the return feed of the combined images are fed back to them.
-Twenty “computers” are crunching this data in order to make it usable
Washington bureau chief David Bohrman attempted to justify the technology to Wolf Blitzer:
Well, I think it was an ornament on the tree. The heart of our coverage yesterday was calling the races, projecting the presidency and covering those amazing moments last night but television evolves and how we do things evolves and maybe at some point five years or 10 years or 20 years down the road, I think there is going to be a way that television does interviews like this, because it allows for more intimate possibility for a remote interview.

I chalk this up to the Time-Warner brass, and their influence. CNN has rapidly become an “infotainment” channel on their watch, and not a valid news organization. The D.L. Hughley show, “News To Me”, etc., all are also contributing factors.

I liked the hologram/s. In a few years the TV viewers will not even know that the hologram is added, unless mentioned by the network/ interviewer. Technology will erase that ‘beam me up Scottie’ visual ouline of the hologram and the visual will be verbatim. Neat beyond very very Cool!!
HOWEVER, why in the hell cant we get voting machines this technologically advanced in effect? They exist GA simply doesnt want to implement! The Maniuplation factor will be lost!! Well the progressive parts of the world/US are mvoing on. GA, powers that be - are like dinosaurs - they will be extint soon THANK GODNESS and we can join the rest of the US and grow and prosper

Wolf Blitzer is horrible hosting the “Situation Room.” He asks a question and does not even listen to the answer. Then he asked the next scripted question, ignores the answer and the cycle begins anew. He is rigid and stifling in this hosting role and just overall a really odd guy for a host. I have watched CNN for years but after Zann, Blitzer and now Campbell Brown I’m strictly a Newshour viewer.
Ted must be none to happy about the toilet CNN is being flushed into.

Wolf Blitzer continues in the CNN tradition. The distance from Chicago to New York is less than 800 miles not “at least a 1000 miles away” as Blitzer reported. Atlanta to Chicago is just over 700 miles. Again they do not know what they are talking about when the facts are in front of them.

The bug: MOST ANNOYING THING E-VER!!!! Thanks for that CNN.
The ticker: 3rd most annoying thing ever. Thanks for that as well CNN.
The 2nd most annoying thing is the animated, in-show, advertisements for other shows. That was probably an invention of Fox, though.

Seems silly and useless now, will probably be the future of television 20 years from now. I’m sure people thought video capability on phones adnd web cams were useless but they are a staple of technology today.
Re: Voting machines I have to agree if we have the technology to create a hologram we shouldn’t have voting issues with electronic systems. How about an electronic version of voting from your home? That way no one has an exccuse about not being able to make it to the polls - 100% voting poulation, well 98% since there will always be those who choose not to vote.

It’s…not a hologram. A hologram would appear in 3D in real life — i.e. Wolf would be able to see it. But only viewers could see it. It’s like the yellow line in football games — they haven’t come up with a holographic yellow line that appears to the players on the field; it’s just a line drawn on your tv screen. Here, there was no hologram — just a 3D image superimposed on your screen (like the yellow line, but 3D and a person).
It’s neat that they can do that now — but “hologram?” Nah — it’s not a hologram.

I have stopped watching CNN. They are more interested in seeing how many flat panel displays they can squeeze onto their sets than reporting the news. The panel that they draw circles and dots on and move states around on is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. The news readers they have in Atlanta are just awful. The whole operation should be moved to New York where better talent is available.

That was one of the most useless gimmicks that I can remember. Too bad they didn’t use all the $ to pay real people, covering real news.
The “bug” and the scrolling text are also awful ideas. When CNN, etc. have nothing to say, they make “nothing” shiny and people stare at it for hours like zombies, while the products they should buy are burned into their subconscious.

It wasn’t even a “hologram” and even if it was, what was the point? A much clearer image can be used by just putting the interviewee in a box. Why would CNN ever think that shooting a 3d hologram image would look anything but crappy after shot with a 2d camera and viewed on peoples 2d TV screens?

Mr. Wizard… We know it’s not a hologram. Most of us understand that TV is not real, and that there’s no actual glowing bar in the studio with a machine that puts plastic letters on it and moves them around based on the story. Nor is there a big chrome CNN spacecraft flying over Atlanta that they used to create the opens.

CNN is totally useless, anyway. Their on commentators are just a joke (the whole bunch of them). Larry King looks like he’s already dead.
The hologram was just hilarious…about as funny as their opinions.
It’s no wonder their veiwership is so low. You can’t change their manifesto of pushing far left ideas and leftist commentators. I only turn to CNN when I go up the channels or if another station I’m watching has a commercial.

It really didn’t contribute to anything and since they are just standing there doing nothing then it seems like a waste of money. However, the only thing I feel that is extrememly stupid about it all is the constant segments on CNN and cnn.com where they constantly pat themselves on the back for it…Ya, nothing says slow news day like interviewing Will I Am’s hologram, except that it was during the election!

I liked the concept and what it stood for. I like CNN attempting to innovate. It was a first attempt at something that may evolve into a mainstay in broadcast television once it is perfected and finds a practical use as a true enhancement versus a shiny new ornament. Viewers have to realize that what they were seeing is a Model-T compared to the Ferrari that this technology could become in 5 years. The hologram’s best application might even come from some spin-off technology that develops out of this hologram’s own maturation.

Sorry Tom Davis, I am not a racist, I have many black friends that refer to Obama in the same light. By the way, Negro is not a pajoritive word, if it were the NAACP would need to change their name. I think the words Colored People is no longer accepted in the world that Tom Davis lives in.
Never thought I would be called a racist for using the word Negro. I guess the word whitey is no longer accepted.
By the way, hold on to your wallet, the “magic negro” wants to tke from you and pass it on to his non-producing friends in society. Read some books on Marx and you will see the blueprint for what we are now facing.

CNN is the second most biased news channel behind MSNBC. It is true that objective professional journalism died in 2008 election coverage. Who would have thought that you would have to look back to the early days (1980’s)of CNN to find any real journalists and journalism? Time Warner has reduced the content on CNN and Headline News to less than the equivalent of a ‘Weekly Reader’ or ‘Star magazine’. Now they are using video game technology disguised as the latest technology for “breaking news”.

I happened to be on CNN at the time when I turned and saw this. I instantly tried to wrap my head around a Star Wars quote to sum it up. “Help me, Obi Wan Blitzer. You’re my only hope.”
Neat technology. Kinda. But as Jon Stewart said, what’s wrong with putting it on one of the 10-foot-tall plasma HD screens right behind you?
It didn’t take long for me to switch to MSNBC. Their “gimmicks” was some weird CG graph put next to a studio host. That’s at least something I can wrap my head around. If MSNBC can go HD soon, I think I can give up on CNN.
Kudos to Fox for, as far as I know, not doing anything totally crazy with technology. They got something right.

If no one ever tried new technology we’d never make advances, and you’d find another name to call them. Must admit I could live without the bug, don’t like the rolling text, and dislike the ads for other shows running when I’m trying to watch a program.
As far as prejudice, some of you should be ashamed to have your narrow views in this day and age. But your lack of knowledge is amazing. The “N” in NAACP is for “National.” The spelling errors from some of you is amazing - I’d be ashamed of that. too.
The progressive income tax structure was first promoted by Roosevelt. Some Socialist! You people really need to read some history.
Most amazing of all above comments is anyone trying to say that FOX network news isn’t biased. Guess we couldn’t tell for whom you voted!

What the hell is a CNN that y’all are discussing? Who or what is a Wolf Blitzer (a new drink from Dairy Queen, or is the Dairy Queen)? The only CNN I know of is the Clinton News Network which I would watch only under threat of: (1) Having a .45 at my temple; (2) Watch CNN or “The Jerry Springer Show” (JSS leads in this department); (3) Interpreting for Cheech and/or Chong; (4) Having to read the Atlanta Urinal-Constipation;, or, (5) Writing a 10,000 word essay on the merits of watching World Championship Wrestling. Well, PE Obama is now in charge so I ain’t gonna worry no mo’. ToljaSo!!

Amazing. What is all the whining about? Don’t be so stiff. The liberals on this blog think the Hologram was cool and displayed advances in technology, The conservatives believe it’s stupid because it’s more advanced than black and white television. Typical.

I am SOOOOO TIRED of Wolf Blitzer, and Kyra Phillips. All her sugary, trying to be funny and folksy is freakin’ annoying. Her orange hair (she did tone it down after I wrote her :-))), but WOlf needs to go now.
Hated the hologram. seemed to be a stupid toy on a serious night of history being made.

I think that the point that CNN was trying to make with the holograms is that the technology that was shown in star trek and star wars now exsist in our day and time. The hologram technology was pretty cool to me. I didn’t see it as anything but CNN letting the viewers know that the hologram technology now can be done, and that technology has come a long way. Now we can do some of the things that we only dreamed of, or only saw in movies.

Some of the folks hating on CNN probably don’t need to be watching CNN; they are probably fauxnoise (foxnews) insiders seething with envy. I thought the hologram was cool and fun to watch and by the way CNN has been a trend setter: 24hr cable news, news ticker, magic wall etc

Next election the GOP will use the “hologram” to make the real Darth Vader show up at their convention. That’s the only leadership they have left.

As this technology improves & it will, the media will use it to deceive the public into thinking whatever agenda they are pushing is correct. I hate to see them armed with any more tools to promote their ideas & crap they spew!!!!

News? What news? CNN used to be the best place for stright news without all the crap. Now? Especially CNN Headline News. Oh to return to the days of yesteryear. When you could tune to CNN Headline News any time at all and get a well developed 30 minute news show. Now all you get is a bunch of ego driven nuts spewing their own personnel biases to try and titillate the masses.

Gimmicks can’t make up for empty, vapid so-called “reporting.” Style over substance. Wolf Blitzer is nothing more than the world’s biggest drama queen.

CNN is a propaganda outlet. They call themselves the most trusted name in news. What a crock. Trusted only by the lazy, the weak minds and the stupid liberals.

what a useless and goofy thing to do. just because technology allows you to do something doesn’t mean you should. cnn’s whole coverage was like that, trying to show off tech toys- really demeaned their coverage.

Absolutely stupid idea. Another one of CNN’s gimmicks to create news rather than report it fairly.

News corporations are laying off people by the thousands, but gosh-darn it, they’re happy to spend millions on a silly piece of technology that makes them the laughing stock of television election coverage. “Hmmm,” the head news wonk ponders, “I can keep 35 people employed or I can drop a load of cash on an election hologram…”

When a new technology or concept arrives on the scene, people who don’t understand it tend to blow it off as silly or stupid. I’m originally from Cnarleston SC and I remember back in the mid- 1970s when someone got the idea to put diapers on horses. That one went over like a lead ballon and people around the world riducled us for it. Today, it is seen a brilliant idea because it improved the cleanliness of the downtown area as well as cut down on the possible transmittance of disease. The hologram by CNN this week will be looked upon as a breakthrough in the coming years because of other potential applicaions for the technology besides news reporting. These are the kinds of cutting edge ideas and concepts America needs to keep ourselves at the top of the global food chain. To those who riducled the idea, NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS!!

I loved it GO CNN you guys had the best coverage of the election but I have to admit I turned the channel now and then just to see FOX news network so I could laugh just to see the expression on their face when Obama was projected as the winner. They have been so biased and negative against Obama.

All the network news organizations need to take a poll and ask what the public thought of their election coverage. Since they won’t, Ill tell you, they all sucked. The only fair coverage was possibly Lou Dobbs. The networks, CNN and FOX were terrible and completely bias. I long for Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, and Walter Cronkite. They reported the news without personal bias and the public got more of the truth.
