11/17: Real Housewives interviews with DeShawn, NeNe and Sheree
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A charity event that goes awry. A party invite that conveniently disappears. A fashion show with no fashion show. Over-the-top spending. Underhanded comments. Nasty text messages. Fake boobs. Real boobs. And some mysterious dude who goes by the name “Big Poppa.”
Even as the nation has been riveted by a presidential election and horrified by woeful economic news, fans and foes of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” have found a diversion from true reality. Old school Atlanta socialites reacted with disdain. Loyalists have reveled in the excesses of the women’s statements and spending habits from a pure entertainment standpoint.
One of the women, NeNe Leakes, has already been highlighted in Entertainment Weekly’s year-end top entertainers of the year.
For Bravo, a hit is a hit. Ratings are stronger than first season numbers for earlier versions in Orange County and New York. During the week of November 3, Bravo aired the different episodes of the show a whopping 25 times, seen by a collective 9.3 million viewers. Those numbers virtually guarantees a second season in 2009 though the network has yet to publicly commit.
And alas, the finale is already upon us tonight after just seven episodes. And check out an already taped reunion episode next Tuesday in which seemingly grounded Lisa Wu Hartwell unexpectedly clashes with the blonde, Botox-loving Kim Zolciak. Bravo made three of the women available for phone interviews last Friday.
Unfortunately, Lisa and Kim were not in town to tell the AJC why they came to blows on said reunion show and who the heck “Big Poppa” is (though rumored are all over the Web.)
DeShawn Snow
On the charity event that didn’t raise 1 million dollars: “On the show, it made it seem like I lost money but we actually broke even in the end. I could have planned more. I could have charged at the door. The auction was awful.
That’s all they showed. But the party went great. More than 400 people learned about the foundation.”
On her foundation to help raise teen girls’ self esteem: “My goal to go national will be realized faster. A lot of people have been donating money. I’ve done summer camps for three years. We had 180 girls the first year, 250 the second and a little more than 300 this past summer. I want to do four camps in metro Atlanta next year.”
On Kim and Sheree bagging on her barbecue, the one she hoped would help reconcile Kim and NeNe: “I’m not mad about them not coming. I don’t care. I was just surprised. I was trying to help.”
On NeNe: “NeNe and I were very close during and after the taping. They didn’t show much of that. I respect her. She’ll say what she thinks to your face, not behind your back. I don’t hang out much with the other girls [except for the show.]”
On NeNe’s mockery of Kim in the limo that led to Kim cutting ties with NeNe: “She wasn’t trying to hurt Kim’s feelings. I was cracking up. There was no harm. It wasn’t something she hadn’t said to Kim’s face. [Then again,] it should not have left the limo.”
On the rough treatment in blogland to the show and to her: “Eric [her husband and captain of the Cleveland Cavaliers] warned me that people would have opinions. I said, ‘Okay, okay, I’ll be fine.’ But my skin wasn’t thick enough. It bothered me. People who know me know I’m a great person. At the end of the day, all that matters to me is Eric and the boys. I can’t control what people say. The show is just a snapshot of who I am.”
On rumors she is in a rented house: “If these people knew the battles I’ve gone through with the builders, they know I wouldn’t do this with a rented house. You can’t believe what you hear.”
On the newfound fame: “I eat it up. I love the glitz and glamour and people recognizing me. It’s all exciting.”
Taking advantage of said fame: “I’m going to be selling online hats and T-shirts, plus crystal cell phone cases. The shirts will have things I said people have run with such as “She didn’t even Google me!” and what Eric called me: ‘Boss lady.’A portion of the proceeds goes to my girls. [meaning, her foundation.]”
Sheree Whitfield
On how she comes across on TV: “I’ve always been strong and confident. It comes across as a little cold.”
On whether her confidence masks insecurity: “Are you kidding me? I am the most secure person on Earth. Anyone who knows me knows I’m comfortable in my own skin.”
On her divorce with Bob Whitfield and whether that desired seven-figure settlement is forthcoming: “I can’t go into that because of my attorneys… we’re at the tail end [of the divorce proceedings.]”
On her finances: “Financially, I’m fine. When I start asking people for money, then you can say, ‘What’s going on with Sheree?’ Of course with the economy, everyone include me is limiting some of my spending. If I don’t truly love it, I’m not making the purchase.”
On what hasn’t been shown on TV: “I’m a great mom. I’m very active in my kids’ lives. I am that soccer mom, that football mom that is not shown.”
On how people think the five of them represent (or misrepresent) housewives of Atlanta: “It’s very comical. We can’t represent a lot of Atlanta. I can only do Sheree well. We’re five strong women with five strong personalities. Someone can relate to any one of us.”
On her clothing line She by Sheree: “I’m looking to have it ready for fall of 2009. I’ll have samples ready for trade shows in February.”
On why she got her clothing samples so late before her fashion line intro party: “I had different seamstresses fall through. It’s hard to find good people. The clothing was supposed to be ready two weeks earlier. She didn’t finish in time. I put so much time and money into that viewing. It was never a fashion show. It was a viewing. I showed fabrics and sketches.”
On her boutique Bella Azul, which closed two years ago: “It was open at Howell Mill and 8th for about four years. I was a pioneer going into that area. The owner kept promising new businesses. It wasn’t hapepning. It’s booming now.”
On blogs where people slag her: “I don’t want to hear that. I don’t read it although I blog myself. And it’s weird because in person, people are so loving and positive.”
On NeNe: “We weren’t friends going in. I didn’t have a lot of interaction with her on camera.”
On NeNe’s mockery of Kim: “It was very mean. To someone I consider a friend, I would have never sung that song. We’re adults. You’re responsible for what you say, whether you’re drunk, high or sober.”
NeNe Leakes
On the newfound fame: “I can’t leave the house without people knowing who I am. I love it. I have great fans!”
On drunkenly mocking Kim’s country singing aspirations: “I didn’t want to hurt Kim’s feelings. I didn’t mean to hurt Kim’s feelings. It was blown out of proportion. That was really a turning point in our relationship. She stopped talking to me. Since then, we’ve had a chance to talk a bit. I apologized.”
But really, how is Kim’s singing? “I had never heard her sing. When she had me listen to her music. I thought, ‘Wow! The music is horrible!’ And I didn’t think Kim could sing. I didn’t mean to say it harsh. I guess I’m really a Simon Cowell!”
On her domestic violence foundation Twisted Hearts: “Porsche Foxx [of V-103] called me and wants to be part of it. Frank Ski has offered to help. Wendy Williams reached out to me. I’ve reached out to Jennifer Hudson because we share the same hairstylist. I have Chili from TLC on board. Keyshia Cole is interested.”.
On who her real daddy is: “It isn’t addressed this season but we may do something assuming there’s a second season. I may have a celebrity sister. That’s my tease!”
On creating drama: “I like to separate from people who bring drama to my life. Every new year, I go through my cell phone and look at my contacts. I delete everybody’s names who bring stress to my life. I do like having girlfriends. I don’t want to have drama with girlfriends.”
On being wealthy [thanks to her hubby Gregg.]: “I live this great fabulous life. I’m blessed. But I’m not going to brag about it. I never talk about designers. I don’t need to die in Dior. I just want to be comfortable.”
On her breasts: “I’m surprised that everyone is talking about my boobs. I don’t think I’m going to put them totally away, just do it a different way.”
On renting or owning her home and other rumors: “Whether you’re renting or purchasing, either way, it’s money coming out of your own pocket. What’s the big deal? It’s nobody’s business if I filed bankruptcy 10 or 20 years ago. What difference does it make? Will it change Bravo’s opinion about me? Absolutely not. I’m a real housewife of Atlanta. That’s the way it’s going to stay.”

NeNe is most real of all the women. Sure, she may kid around and tease you, but what friends don’t do that? Kim takes herself way too seriously and so does Sheree, too. “She by Sheree.” Oh yeah, that’s classy. And her “viewing”? That’s a term I always heard associated with funerals…pretty appropriate here, tho. And like getting all those people to go to her viewing had nothing to do with her soon-to-be ex-husband’s fame, and his alimony money that paid to put on the show? It’s all her? What a phony. And as for NeNe, from watching the show, you know three things about that girl: 1) she is real, 2) she has a big heart, and 3) she would be a great, fun friend who any of those women would be lucky to have. That’s something anybody can - and should - aspire to.

This show is such a fraud. These women represent nothing but their own excesses. Check the map, girlfriends, none of these women live within 5 miles of the heart of Buckhead. Do any one of them have friends in the West Paces Ferry Road neighborhood or have they ever been to the Cherokee Country Club? And who is the interior designer for all of those awful rooms of furniture they all live in? Thay all need friends at ADAC. And no ladies, that is not a spa. If you know the layout of Atlanta, you know that this is anything but Atlanta, GA. All of Atlanta is laughing. I hope in Season 2, they can make a party at the Mayor of Atlanta’s home?????? Probably not, if the Mayor wants to keep her job.

i went into this show thinking these women were typical obnoxious new money in north metro suburban atlanta. and so what i they are? it just goes to show when everyone else is complaining and pointing fingers and calling them names just how much we would all change places with these ladies if only for one day.
but at the end, i have the utmost respect for nene. she makes me laugh, and she has shown a side of herself to all of us that truly goes beyond scripted reality tv.
and i’m sorry, kim is not a housewife. she is a kept woman, talentless, and what is up with that wig on her head? and why is she lying about her age?!
sheree is great as well. but come on honey, unless you got daddy or even independent money, you got that fashion line up and running from your ex-man’s money. don’t lie.
deshawn is my second favorite. i thought at first “who needs an estate manager for a house in waaay northwestern alpharetta” but who cares? she is a good soul, a good person.
and i’m a fan of lisa too. i don’t care who she was married to first. it’s obvious watching how she and her husband interact on the show they are meant for each other. i love her spirit, and i love her energy.
at the end of the day, this is a great show. sure these ladies aren’t old money atlanta but i doubt real housewives of orange county are either (considering how incredibly shallow, bleached, and surgeried they are). at least our women are gorgeous women of color (except kim) and they show black women in a different light than shaking themselves all over music videos. these ladies really put themeslves out there.
i am dying for a nene spotting!!

Ne-Ne Is the one and only Real Housewife of Atlanta she keeps it real and does not fake it to make…she’s not all “cheesy” in the camera like Lisa is. I look forward to watching the show every Tuesday. DO YOUR THANG NE-NE

This should be the NE NE show, Lisa and your hubby Ed are messy people. What was said in the limo should have stayed in that limo. Now you guys want to front like you want everybody to get along when you guys (Lisa and Ed) are the ones that started all the mess. Grow up that was so juvenile..

It was very entertaining. Love Lisa and Sheree. But to represent ATL at IPPOLITOS and Stoney River Steakhouse? And that Kim went to a day spa in a shopping center. Have enjoyed some Ippolitos but, Come on ladies… is that’s how ATL is represented? OC and NYC must be laughing their @$$ off.

To JDE: Do you not realize that this is JUST A SHOW??? This is just for our entertainment and if you cannot understand that, then something is wrong with you. Obviously you like the show since you are blogging about it and waiting for season 2. So what if they don’t live in or 5 minutes away from buckhead? Do you have friends in the West Paces Ferry neighborhood? Do you live there? Probably not. So what’s the big deal? I have come to find out that a lot of people living here try to act high class and elite because they have a regular 9 to 5.Stop trying to fake the funk people. Once again for all of the SIMPLE, so called high class, know all about Atlanta people who really think this show is a true representation of Atlanta….It is just a show! Get over it. Oh, by the way, real women congratulate each other, not hate on each other. It sounds like jealousy is in the air. Are you mad they didn’t ask you to do the show?

I must admit I watched it this weekend for the very first time. Nene is my favorite, no she isnt the cutest one, but she keeps it real. Sheree is so full of ish. Kim is phony too, for telling what happened in the Limo, her husband too. that is why his fake a** is not playing in the NFL, the Raiders cut him. I will watch again, for Nene only.

Sheree, new thought: You and NeNe weren’t friends so why did call and invite her to the party to embarras her? Oh, and we know you don’t like her because you’re always saying something negative about her, watch the show. Is that your basis for manipulating the hell out of Kim and causing the confusion between her and NeNe. I don’t trust you Sheree and wouldn’t turn my back on you either. When I am over in Atlanta spending my money it would be best for me to support a black designer that I know nothing of other than their designs.

This show is purely entertainment, only!! Oh by the way,I was watching the NBA on TNT the other day and Ernie Johnson called Charles Barkley “Big Poppa” in a joking manner.HUM !!!Oh really. We all know that Kim is his flavor of choice, PWT.

Sheree is yalking out of both sides of her mouth now. On the show she says that she and NeNe have been friends for years. For this article she says they weren’t friends going in. What gives? If you no longer want to be frineds, just be woman enough to own that. The show is pure drama, but at least it is entertaining. I don’t find it any less appealing than the other two “Housewives” series. I know it’s all edited for TV, but it seems that all the women involved could use a reality check.

Haters waste so much time hating.
NeNe/Lisa yall 2 are my favorites.

Deshawnie - God bless your heart!

I must say that I enjoy the show. Like most of Atlanta NeNe is by far my favorite. She is real and live and I live. If it wasn’t for her I don’t think I would watch. DaShawn comes off as lazy. How bout she cook her own meals and clean her own house and take that extra coin and pour it into her foundation.. I also noticed she hired everyone but a personal trainer.. I’m just saying is all. Now Miss. Sharee is just a gag! I can not believe someone can be so out of touch with reality. She’s so beautiful and a humble attitude would really take her to the top. Kim should ask “Big Daddy” for some coin to go by some real her that is put in professionally. That hair is creepy. Last but not least I love Lisa. She’s so full of life and she is stunning. I can say that Lisa and NeNe are my favorite. The show does’t exactly paint Atlanta in the best light, but the show is entended for entertainment and that it is. Yes they are new money, but new money is better then no money and I will be watching next weekend.

I’m curious how much the lunch with Eddie Long and his wife was auctioned off for at Mrs.Snow’s charity auction??? She should have had the event aired on her website so fans could have bid also. Might have hit her mark! Can someone define “REAL HOUSEWIFE” to me please?? I doubt any of them do things my definition of a real housewife does- laundry, cooking, cleaning, pta, balance a checkbook!! I wonder how p** I would be if they put an African-American version of Kim on the Orange County show?? Can u say “ONE HOT MESS”!!! On NeNe- she’s most like that crazy girlfriend we all have that you’d never go anywhere without cause you know you it’s going to be fun and she got your back no matter what! Are u the “NeNe” of your crew?! I am!

Y’all all crack me UP. But that one person is right: not a SINGLE one of them lives in the city. But The Real Housewives of Alpharetta doesn’t have the same cachet.
NeNe’s not really in an apartment, is she? Where’s that sweet hubby of hers? Why isn’t he taking care of her like he should? Is that what she was talking about in the interview, that they’re having some work done on a new house before they move in?
And Kim! A kept woman living in a lousy townhouse — and not even a nice townhouse — with her two impressionable girls. What kind of example is that? If your man can pay cash for an Escalade, make him get you a for-real house! And the girl is TONE DEAF. So sad. I guess when she was singing along with her booming stripper music, she sounded good to Big Poppa. A friend told me today that her sister says Kim is the only person in the world who can wear Dior and still look like a hooker. Amen to that Ms. St. Louis!
I like Lisa and her husband, too, even tho they started the drama with Nene and the evil Sheree.
DeShawn… well, bless her heart. Just bless her heart.
And Sheree: You said you came from an upper middle class family, but I guess that money didn’t buy you an education because your grammar is uneducated. And remember, what goes around comes around. Try being kind instead of being such a demanding witch.
Can’t wait for next season!

Keep being a mom to those 2 little girls of yours. Nene you are a mess you are a wannabe getting evicted. PLEEEZE child. Sheree I am sure you will stab Kim in the back like you have everyone else. OH Kim you got the cover o playboy. Good for you! I will buy it for sure

All 5 of these women are shallow, vapid, gold-digging skanks. None of them could ever fit into Atlanta High Society. And, NO, it’s not because 4 of them are African-American. They’re too nouveaux riche and ostentatious. High Society is never that vulgar, and they don’t flaunt their money.
I find it comical that they are considered “Housewives” when 2 of them are divorced. I thought in order to be a “housewife”, you have to have a HUSBAND.

NeNe, you are my absolute favorite on the show and Deshawn is next. You two are not “perfect”, but NO ONE IS!? NeNe, you are a true, transparent, sweet lady with well-behaved children and a very nice husband. My only suggestion, ladies decide on how many glasses to have before socializing so not to appear overindulgent. I’m sending well wishes to you and yours for a very bright and happy future and I’m so glad you’re on the show!! DeShawn, you seem to be a good and spiritual person who is trying to do something good for “the girls.” However, you contradicted that and appeared selfish toward your husband when you told Lisa in the baby store that you got rid of all your husbands “bling” and exchanged it for your own “bling”. Sheree, you appear to be trying hard to “be” someone that you are obviously “not”. Get real and be nice for a change!! Lisa, you are physically beautiful and a hard worker, but I’d like to see more of you with your children. Do you have time with all that you’re doing? Ladies, take care!!

Nene lived on my street while they were filming this, but she moved out into an apartment a month or two ago. The truth is that they were renting a house they could not afford. I believe Bravo actually paid the rent. Nene does not have the money it appears she has on the show.

OMG. The last episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta airs tonight. And the 24 months presidential campaign/elections are long complete. What’s a girl to do??? I guess go back to working on the laptop 24/7 writing business strategies; my home based lucrative business. I have truly enjoyed the Real Housewives of Atlanta or the RHA series. It’ funny, sad, crazy, sexy, bling, tacky, fabulous and.. oh yeah did I say Catty? All of the cast members are great. Big congratz to Bravo and Oxygen. We’ll be waiting waiting waiting for the next series. Lets see: maybe Kim gives up singing and pursues corporate? Maybe Sheree turns into a nun. maybe DeShawn buys herself a stripper pole. Perhaps, Lisa and Ed get to featue their entire family. And, Ms NeNe; the star of the show: let’s get her to take charge of a mission overseas to feed the Hungary. She will fix it!! She always does!

I don’t care how much money NeNe has or where she lives. She made this show..it would have been dreadful without her!
I miss NeNe and her wonderful family. I hope she and Gregg both know what gems they have in each other. All the husbands on this show were great, the girls done good. I hope to see the WIVES back for another season. The WIVES being NeNe, Lisa, and DeShawn.

Nene, is the most genuine one on the show, she is sure about herself, Lisa seems as is she is a very hard workers, she strikes me as having Jamaican genes, juggling several jobs and a family.
Nene don’t ever change who you are, I know you are going to go far with your charity and your career. Forget about Kim she is a “Air Head” as for Sheree she is so Phony, she is the biggest hyprocrite. Nene girl just keep doing what you are doing this is your time.
Love from the Jamaican Circle.

I watched the show once after one of my girlfriends from Atlanta told me about it. I was disgusted and embarrassed. I certainly don’t want my 15 year old daughter to watch this mess! I know it’s entertainment, but it’s just so horrible. Having lived in Atlanta a few years back, I have never heard of these women. The “real housewives” of Atlanta are involved in our sororities and organizations of the true black elite like Jack and Jill. If these women were truly reflective of Atlanta they would be involved in at least one of these groups. Nothing against these sisters (Kim included) I’m glad that I went to college and made my own money. I wouldn’t want my daughter to be like either of them. DeShawn and Lisa might be salvageable, but they really need to focus on what’s important. I know that the show needs to reflect big, grand homes and things of that nature, but they could at least try to portray something redemptive. At least Lisa does have businesses! I appreciate that about her. Bottom line…I don’t care to watch another episode and am so very sorry that we as Americans have come to the place where we’re interested in this kind of trash. That’s is exactly why the Chinese, Russians, and Indian’s are cleaning our clocks on the world stage. Our kids are stupid because we’d rather be on a stupid demeaning show rather than spend our time building schools or volunteering for or founding organizations that can make a difference. (Question to ponder - why did NeNe and DeShawn wait until the show to come up with foundations - if they were really on the scene they would have done this much sooner.) I hope we wake up before it’s too late.

I think the show was not great. Ne Ne ,I think she and Kim were awful calling each other such names two women on T. V.People like trash T.V, thats why they loved Ne Ne, trash sells in 2008. My favorite was Dehawn. Look at her life and her beautiful family, she does not have to act crazy like that so she can get a show , so she can act like a Lady. She was the only one I cared for .Her family is what young people should see. IT was a good witness. The rest , just trash T. V.PLease Bravo fire the others but they will be back, America has lost values and morales
