12/15: Bravo renews “Real Housewives of Atlanta”

In a move that surprised nobody, Bravo today officially announced a second season of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.”

The show was basically much more popular than anticipated, building from 650,000 viewers the first episode to 2.8 million viewers by the time the reunion came along two months later. It has also generated incredible response here on this blog. People may abhor the women but they can’t stop talking about them.

Or we can take the press release quote from the Bravo exec, in less-than-colorful business-speak:

“The level of engagement on Atlanta far surpasses a typical series on cable or broadcast, with our viewers deepening their connection to the show through live wireless chats, daily blogs and additional footage online,” said Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Bravo. “This, along with the colorful personalities of our housewives, helped drive the series to a watercooler sensation.”

I anticipate all five housewives will be back. I’m not sure if they are contractually required to be around for a second season but my guess is yes. I ran into Sheree Whitfield yesterday at Frank Ski’s wine auction and she said the promotion the show gives her is priceless in terms of getting her clothing line off the ground, that it’s well worth the aggravation of being insulted online and being scrutinized to such a degree.

A launch date for season two has yet to be identified though my guess is late spring or summer. I bet they will start shooting the season in January or February.

I can’t believe people watch these thugs. If they want to do a show about the “real” housewives of Atlanta, they need to be showing all of the drug dealing, shootings, robberies, etc in Atlanta. Much more accurate.

Fly On The Wall - Well said! This is just another example of the endless stream of mindless fluff passed off as “entertainment” by “Hollyweird”. This garbage is sheeple-bait of the 1st order! More Americans needs to turn off (& throw out) the idiot-box and educate themselves via reading.

This was one of the most embarrassing atrocities that I have ever witnessed. That being said, although I could not bring myself to watch it weekly after seeing that monster of a first episode, I did watch the entire marathon before the renion show. It was like a train wreck that I could not turn away from.

Ooh… I am excited about the 2nd season, as I was asking a couple days ago whether the show would receive one or not.

But will NeNe have her mansion back? Or will she be taped from inside a homeless shelter?

I think this is just want we need now. I don’t want to watch the news or hear about how bad the economy is and how the “war on terror” is going. Sometimes it is nice to watch frivolous TV shows to escape. I hope NeNe and Kim get into it some more and if She by Sheree really takes off.

TRASH! Yea, you may think this “show” has made you the talk of a the town in a good way and doors may appear to be opening up NOW, but is a trashy cable show that does nothing but make you an utter joke for the rest of your life worth it. Their best wish is that people will forget about this years down the road. But really? I THIS what you want your legacy to be - “So n so from a trashy cheap reality show”?! There must be a wait list for padded rooms at the mental hospitals. SAD.

These women are such an embarassment to the city of Atlanta I cringe everytime I hear about them. They are NOT the REAL housewives of Atlanta. Only two of them even pretend to be normal people the others need to be in an institution out of state.

Never have been much of blogger and i have only seen short clip of this embarassment, but I must say actually angers me to think that people set their “tivos” to watch this nonsense. Its very much a sign of how convoluted and hollow people have become. These women are trash who are doll’d up and put on a pedestal. We have real problems in this city ans/or country ; i.e poverty…And then these “women” parade aroung their cash like they earned it. joke.thats an idea for a show “THE REAL HOMELESS OF ATLANTA” great entertainment…

Nene looks like someone who went to Clarke Central in Athens, GA. If so, her mother(deceased) had moved to New York years ago, leaving Nene in Athens to raised by an aunt who yet resides in Athens. Does she have a brother named Anthony? Was her mother’s maiden name Smith? The Nene I know was quite a lively character.

tina,

Black people don’t have a patent on what you have just insinuated. Out of wedlock single mom’s are everywhere. I live in Kentucky (transplanted from Macon and Atlanta), where there are not so many African Americans. I see more caucasian girls walking around pregnant than I can shake a stick at (as my mom would say). Believe it or not, the woman on that show do not act any different from their white counterparts in Orange County and New York. Classlessness is colorblind!

a real housewife actually spends time with her husband and kids, while working and keeping the house in order. these women only showed their kids when they are spending money on them. i have been married for 13 years we have a son, and we both run our own business but still spend time together and have fun. that is what being a REAL housewife is about. not being a mistress, a gold digger trying to take all of your ex-husband money, a wife that does nothing and spends no time with her kids, or someone who does not even have custody of their kids.

With all of our foreclosed properties the show maybe renamed Real Renters in the ATL.

By say what?

December 15, 2008 5:57 PM | Link to this

These women don’t hold a match to the other real housewives. Further only 3 were married. I guess playing house with another woman’s spouse kinda makes you a wife (Kim). It’s trashy, foollish, and demeaning to real wives in Buckhead who really do some parenting, shopping, charity, etc. Some actually do for other people, and are not self absorbed. Cast off Sheree (not Sha-Ray as her uneducated self likes to pronounce), NeNe and Kim. 1st rule must be married to be a housewife.

Sheree-did your daughter from your teen pregnancy quit as one of your assistants? Proof that you are unfit to represent the “A”- you try to hand off your grown child as an employee. Shame shame shame. Bravo- should be boycotted.

I have to admit that I watched quite a few episodes. My wife and I watch this show for it’s comedic value as none of these ladies being ANYTHING to the table talent wise. We also watch this train wreck of a show to keep us grounded. We appreciate the things and friends we have. These ladies have come to a place in their lives where reality does not truly exist. Here is my take on each of these “Courtesan’s” aka High priced hookers. NeNe: Ugly inside and out. This skeezer thinks she’s all that and she ain’t Sht at all. Yeah she used to get smacked up by her man,and thats wrong, but as Chris Rock stated “I understand” I wouldn’t want to be in the same conversation nor room with this one.Get your a$$ back on center stage stripper! I heard she’s homeless.Eastlake Meadow is gone and she’s lost! Sheree Straight up ghetto funkulous. She claims to have grown up, upper middle class and left it behind for high class. Here’s my take on that skank. Has anyone reading this received that email of those high school prom kids wearing matching basketball team dresses and tux’s?….Thats her. Can someone please inform her that upper middle class people don’t usually get arrested for shoplifting? and that fashion designers typically have something other then bullsht sketches and finger foods to launch their lines?(That show was my X-Mas present) The White chick:Hey you come off as someone who JUST got out of the trailer park and your just finding your way in this big super duper world of Mega-hoe-ing.Pay attention to NeNe and Sheree’s game and yo’ll be fine. NeNe straight punked you out when you should’ve blasted her right in that Mustang SVO hood Scoop of a nose she has.You let the black thing get to ya. You shoulda just went for it. Get out of the sun and quit smoking (I shouldn’t talk)and give up the singing..PLEASE Ms Snow She has the most credibility of all of them because she clearly is not a goldigger, she paid her dues with he man (good hoopster)and she doesn’t start trouble or throw gas on an existing fire. She’s COOL and by far the realest of them all. The cute chick She’s ok with me and the Mrs. She really should support her man more regarding football, but i understand her point too..well MY wife does. That blow up on the reuinion show came out of nowhere though. It seems she had time to reflect before that show.

Truly wealthy people do not act like these ladies. They have the confidence and class that goes along with their position in life. Thats how you know these chicks are a fraud!!!

so where are they going to show these low class gold-diggers livings. Sheree and Nene have both been evicted and its rumored so is Deshawn. The only time these “housewives” were shown with their kids was when they were spending thousands on them. Other than that NeNe is always shown at some bar getting drunk with her chest hanging out for all to see. Great publicity for a no class, wanna be socialite gold-digger. The only women that actually has a real job is lisa. Everyone else is a wanna be millionaire living way out in the suburbs and hour outside the city. they take the money and run.

It is funny the way this show gets so many people upset and stirs up such hostile emotions. I have not watched the show and I do not plan on watching the new shows, mainly because reality programs usually are of no interest to me. I say just let folks watch this kind of show, if they chose to do so. The name calling is really hillarious. I just know these women are crying themselves to sleep knowing that strangers who hide behind a keyboard do not like them, especially when so many of them have fully-functional families, and can make the Ward & June Cleavers and Ozzie & Harriett Nelsons look like Ozzie & Sharon Osbournes. Whose reality show, by the way, was not castigated like RHofA. Profane kids, a drugged out dad, and God-only-knows-what-else was going on in that house and the show still had a high viewership, but it did not have the same harsh criticism.

These women do not in any way represent Atlanta housewives. Most of them aren’t even married. You want to show real Atlanta housewives, then you need Sonny Perdue’s wife, maybe Shirley Franklin or her partner, Francoeur’s wife (at least she has class) instead of these gold digging former wives with absolutely no class at all.

I guess the show was made for people who actually believe “reality” tv is real. It’s more scripted than a movie! They are embarassing & all they represent is women tearing each other down. I only saw the reunion show & can only say I was disappointed in the one with the basketball player husband who professes to be a Christian. She shouldn’t be involved in this trash. I bet even the “loss” of NeNe’s house is a publicity stunt. She probably moved at the request of the network to cause controversey & interest in next season.

I too said all that negative crap in the beginning about the show about the ladies. I felt NeNe was so ghetto and I felt the other ladies (Kim, SheRAY, Deshawn) was living a fantasy. NeNe however is the one I came to respect and appreciate the most because of her transparency. The other ladies were too busy pretending trying to be something they are not. Like it or not, NeNe is the only one on the show who can stand along, If New York, New York from Flavor of Love can have her own TV show, I know NeNe can do it! And she would probably can teach you haters a thing a two while doing it!!! I would not be surprise if she(NeNe) came full circle and talk openly about the real life challegenes she, her husband and family has faced through these horrible economic times. Perhaps those times hasn’t hit your home, your apartment or your job yet!

My hat is off to a woman or a man who can stand up in the face of adversity and laugh out loud at her critics and refuse to allow her past and circumstances to cause her to bow her head in shame.

My only wish for all of them this next time around (second season) is that they get legal counsel and make sure their contracts are negotiated properly. The contingency for the first run should have been if rating went over a certain number of viewers, they would automatically share in the profits. Bravo and the producers should not have been able to take all the dough home :( I can’t wait til next season. Meanwhile, you perfect, self righteous, bone heads need to focus on something positive to say and stop HATING!!

To DJ: the fact that these women are “prepetrating a fraud” is what “really” makes it real. There are so many people in this country who live outside their means… these women just reflect what is really going on everywhere else. This whole country is perpetrating a fraud. That’s why we are in this economic mess. The banks, mortage companies, auto industry are all over-extended and running their companies on money they don’t have or make. They are only concerned with raising their bottom line. This country created these women, especially Nene, she didn’t create her behavior, she learned to do what a lot of other people have been doing. Good luck, Nene!!! Oh, and for all you negative commentators, if you don’t like the show then, duh, don’t watch it. You “suckers” are doing exactly what the producers want you to do … talk about the show!!!

First off you people are just to deep. The Realhouse wives of Atlanta is just a show, I look at like a dramedy. These women and their lives should not be looked at as role models, “real atlanta housewives”, representation of Atlanta. If you look at it for anything other that entertainment purposes then there is something wrong with you. IT’S JUST ENTERTAINMENT……….

Wait a minute Jazz, don’t bash Seinfeld! That show was funny, well after the first season anyway, except for a few episodes. Say what you want about the other shows you mentioned, but leave Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer (go ahead and bad-mouth Michael Richards) alone. I still watch the reruns whenever I get the chance. Oh, and I am black, in case anyone was wondering.

Well, I like the show. It is just entertainment. It is not on the discovery channel or Tru (court) TV. It is just entertainment; to think of it as more is giving this show much more credit than what it is. People viewing this show know that. It is just like every other TV show that is there to make you laugh or keep your mind of other things for 30 minutes or so. It is not meant to be taken seriously; the people I know that watch the show feel the same way. The “real” issues in Atlanta or not discussed on this show, because the show is not completely real. It is just like the wrestling shows and other “reality” shows, it is amped up to make you think it is real-when it is. Like Tru TV says, it is not “actuality”.

“Christi” got it right…..She moves on to the next round !

They say this “sideshow of freaks” has great ratings and represents Atlanta…….1st They neglect to ask questions of the viewers as to what they feel about the show?, content?, embarrassment?, is this reality?, etc……2nd I’m appalled as to this representing Atlanta! This represents CCOS (Country Club of the South)….a VERY tired community…I know for a fact the Homeowners Association, and Board are just embarrassed by this false representation…..its turning into an urban Hood……I wouldn’t doubt it if this year, the production company added a “drive-by” into the story somehow….yeah, that would be great for Atlanta to be proud of.

Here’s a novel concept, find “Housewives of Atlanta” that actually work ! One from Morningside, one from Ansley Park, one from Cobb, One from the West End, One from Forsyth, or at least an honest data base. Really……do you honestly think that any citizen of Atlanta with an IQ over 115 is NOT embarrassed, especially Black or African American. The Mayor can’t say it publicly because of hurting her constituent base relationships.

And props to “tina”….Why can’t we do a show with REAL contestants like yourself ? That is what is appalling….

I only saw excerpts, blips, or commercials for the show…..but the only one that has some sense of character is the family or wife of the Football player.

Can I get an AMEN ?

I would love to see the 2nd season of HOA. I doubt Kim will be back, not they way the other four heifers handled her. Hopefully they will get a Jamaican or Hispanic housewife. Now that would be interesting.

It’s sad we have the poverty in America today and you have five women flaunting their wealth. Bragging about the car their married boyfriend bought them and some dressing like hookers and they have children. What happened to teaching your children morals and values? What happened to being a parent? This show and the one in California is repulsive. You can see the writing on the wall when it comes to their children. How sad!

Sherre knows good and doggone well her name is SHERRY! LOL! Sherry Whitfield is the MOST laughable of all the Housewives. If a woman is aristocratic, beautiful and well socialized she has enough class NOT to verbalize it. That in itself shows Sherry hasn’t a clue - she is simply a golddigger like Kim and NeNe. With Sherry being SO beautiful did you see her ex-husband? GOLDDIGGER! That’s why she is still single - GOLDDIGGER wanting a 7 figure divorce settlement. PLEASE! Sherry you didn’t bring 7 figures to the table, you didn’t help Bob earn the 7 figures, why should you get 7 figures out the divorce settlement? Do something worthwhile BESIDES drop names and THINK you are beautiful. Atlanta DOES NOT look/turn to you for fashion sense SHERRY!!!!

I find this to be disgusting and as humiliating and for the city of Atlanta as the “Dirty Awards”. When is this city going to stop catering to these immoral, disrespectful people and try to attract wholesome people who will actually contribute something valuable to society? And no, spending your husband’s money while making an ass of yourself and condescending to those around you is NOT a valid contribution!

Its a show people DAMN. Yall kill me trying to always bash this show. Shows are for entertainment. Half the people on this blog have only seen clips. Don’t talk about the show if you havent seen it. If you are making comments about how the black community is affected by this then you are taking this way too seriously and need to get a life.

I have to come back and apologize. I watched Housewives of Orange County and I was wrong to make a comparision regarding some of the Housewives of Atlanta were not real housewives. Well, one of the Orange County women is not married as Kim was not and one is not with her husband as Sherry was not. So for my premature comment I apologize. But after viewing the two I still must admit that the Orange County version showed more family interaction and real issues that showed the money does not exempt you from problems we all have. Those women of OC can be viewed as gold diggers as well. Now how many of you will give your life up as a 30 something year old gorgeous blonde to dedicate your life to a man with diabetus(wilford brimly). She is in in for the money and oh by the way I think I love you. To further prove my point, one of her cast mates insinuated that during their pamper session. Now the real question is since when did you have to have a husband that was a millionaire to qualify as a housewife. Between my husband and myself we are multi-thousandaires, I am a housewife and our life is as rich as those depicted in both series. I am entertained by it and that is all I expect to get from it. OC and ATL do your thang. I still don’t like Sherry.

This was the biggest waste of tv airtime. Real housewives are suppose to be married. How can a woman be a housewive and not be married. These are some low budget wanna be chicks. Look at the girl NeNe, so classy and high profile. Her crib is getting foreclosed just like all the other Average americans. In times like these isnt there something more creative Bravo could come up with.

Real housewives of Atlanta is only a show, but it does show you how things are among a bunch of so called women friends. To tell the truth, there is no such thing as friendship among them and any other social economic group of women. They are a group of jealous and back staabbing woman.

Ok guys..have you never watched prior seasons of the Housewives series. Take for example the OC…no all of them were married, in fact one was going through a divorce. I think we as african americans/native atlantans were just extra hypocritical because it was closer to us. But let me tell you that the previous Housewives were the same if not more scandalous than the ATL version.

Be PROUD Atlanta, be proud! You are finally being exposed as the ghetto fabulous town you’ve worked so hard to become!!!!

What’s really awesome is I read on Gawker that none of these fabulous women even live in the city. They live OTP in places like Duluth!!! HA!I’m sure all my former neighbors in Brookhaven are all too proud to be represented by this lovely klan of high upstanding (and apparently broke) individuals.

Having moved on and away I can honestly say I don’t miss the Atlanta of today and will remember the Atlanta of the 90’s and early 2000’s when things were right in the city.

I have just read through a few comments here, and I am not sure why so many people believe this show (or an other “reality show”) should be taken as a true or accurate depiction of any one group. I watched the full season of ATL Housewives and, although at first against my better judgement, found it to be entertaining. Do I think these women represent me as a wife or mother? No. Do I think they represent me as an African-American? No. I am an avid reader, I consider myself to be an intelligent contributor to society. But to tell you the truth, we all need an escape from our own reality.

The show may give Sheree great PR for her fashion line, but she still has to come up with a product. And she doesn’t seem to have the talent, intelligence, education, or ambition to actually do that. I think we’ll see her clothing line about the same time we see Kim’s first album.

Well Bravo is owned by NBC and currently NBC is in a world of hurt financially because of bad decisions. So this does not surprise me that they would take this garbage and renew it for a second season. They ought to just change the name to The Real Housewives because as a citizen of Atlanta I am ashamed that this show even remotely depicts what people around here act like. You might call it just entertainment, but it is still categorized as a reality show and that alone will give people outside the city the wrong impression. But hey that is what we get when we market the city this way. What a shame.

I’m glad the show got renewed. Its very entertaining. For those that don’t like it there are plenty of other shows on that really reflect the kind of “classy” entertainment that shows southern living at its finest. Just look at CMT, where else can you find classy and thought provoking entertainment like “My Big Fat Redneck Wedding” or my favorite, “Trick My Truck”. If that doesn’t do it for you there is “Hillbilly Deluxe” or “Mobile Home Disasters”. Maybe some of the folks on here blogging should e-mail BRAVO and see if they can get some shows like that on their network.

On another note, I know Sheree is a snob but she can get it!!! She is fine and looks 222222 good!!

On 12/15/08 at 7:05pm, Ne Ne confirmed for everyone just how truly GHETTO she is. Ne Ne and Sheree, beautiful African American women, yet you all acted so stupid. I really disgusts me. You acted like that because you never had sh*t in the first place and now you want to flaunt what you think you have; material crap. It’s obvious, you’re miserable. Is that why your husband left you Sheree? What else are you beotches good for besides this? And WTF…is Dwight. He was a hot a$$ mess! I think I threw up in my mouth a lil bit every time he was on.
