1/2: Tripp West leaving Star 94, replaced by syndicated Ryan Seacrest
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ryan Seacrest will effectively replace Tripp West (above, from July) at Star 94.
If you don’t already get enough of Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol,” the E! cable network and American Top 40 countdown on Star 94, you’ll be hearing more of him from noon to 3 p.m. each weekday on that same top 40 station.
Seacrest is coming full circle. He started his career in the early 1990s in high school as a fill-in DJ at Star 94 before moving to Los Angeles to pursue his Hollywood dreams. Star picked up his weekly weekend countdown show as soon as he took over in 2004 for Casey Kasem.
He has been doing a morning show on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles since 2004 as well. Last year, the show was syndicated and is heard on about 70 radio stations nationwide including the top 40 station in New York City. You won’t get a full-fledged morning show from noon to 3. Rather, you’ll get a “best of” compilation of what Seacrest had done a few hours earlier on his Los Angeles show.
At the same time, Tripp West, who has been at Star for 11 years and seven of them as mid-day host, will be leaving. His contract isn’t up until May but he said Star is being nice enough to allow him the time to job hunt. If he finds a good job before May, they will let him out of his contract. (This is a rare case of true compassion from an employer, relatively speaking.)
West said he is fine with the move, understands why Star is doing it. (Star is getting a bit of star power, literally, and hopefully save a few bucks, too.) “Eleven years was a great run,” he said. “I’m very excited about the challenge moving forward.” He also runs a DJ company (www.liquidmindproduction.com) so if you need a jock for a corporate, club or wedding, he’s available.
I couldn’t get a hold of Rick Mack, the general manager, so I’m not sure what Star will do from 10 a.m. to noon. (Tripp had done 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). West said he’s willing to fill in during that time once Seacrest starts on Star.
West wasn’t sure when Star was starting Seacrest’s show but said it’s probably in mid-January.

Who gives a Rat’s …
I’ve been in Atlanta since 1987 and there hasn’t been a decent station here in all that time. All you hear are the hits - country, rock, hippity hop, etc. Nothing decent. 106.7 is better, but they are even starting to fall into the trap.

This is unfortunate. I think that Star94 is going to lose a lot more listeners because of this than what they’ll gain from bringing in that syndicated Seacrest crap. My wife and I listen to Tripp during the day while we’re at work, and he is one of the reasons we have continued to listen to Star94 (given all their recent changes).
Good luck Tripp! I hope another Atlanta station recognizes your talent and picks you up.

You must think Radio is here to serve the listener. No, it’s to serve the ratings, and the bottom line. It’s so sterile and methodical it’s like porn. Watch it once, and you know the plot to every other one even before it starts. That’s radio today, and now when you can listen on the internet ipod or whatever, and even program it how you like it. Who needs commercial radio anymore. No one thinks for themselves anymore. (Regular Guys? Give me a break, and Rick and Bubba, don’t even go there)

Aww, that’s a great loss to Atlanta radio. I do hope someone else will pick him up. I’ve been listening to Tripp since he was on the air in Savannah (went to Georgia Southern with him) and I hope he finds a station that is similar to his true taste in music. His sessions in Savannah were excellent and alternative. He really turned people on to new music. I’m sure it’s been no treat for him having to play crap like Daughtry and Miley Cyrus!

That stinks. Star94 is getting farther and farther away from playing music. If I wanted to listen to talk radio, I would. But now there’s the Morning Mess, Seacrest, then Cindy and Ray. Too much talking for me. I’m glad I’ve got my iPod.
Also, how is Seacrest’s show going to be relevant to Atlanta? Plus you can listen to the show live in the morning on the KIIS site.

I sure do miss what radio used to be. It was supposed to serve the market and what music the market demanded. Nowadays, WE members of the market couldn’t even pay a DJ or radio station to play what we want to hear. They THINK they know what we want to hear, but don’t bother to listen to us. This latest move by Star94 is just yet another bonehead move on the part of radio. Radio only serves to promote the best interests of their pockets and promotion of the IMAGE of an “artist”, not whether or not the “artist” (notice the sarcasm) has any talent. Radio is basically dead. Wish I could have satellite radio…I’ll get it eventually.

“All you hear are the hits”.
What do you expect? Radio is a business that lives by selling advertising. Advertisers want the most listeners. Hits are hits because more people like them (of course, not music snobs that are apparently posting here, but real, regular people, who make pop music, well, popular).
Radio is a mass media. Get over it. If you want to listen to your “cool” limited market stuff, get an IPOD (or is that too “pop” for you, too?)

Haven’t listened to ANY music radio station in Atlanta in YEARS! I occassionally listen to the River, but even that is RARE.
Commercial music offerings stink. Everybody is made to sound like everybody else, and the lyrics have no depth whatsoever.
Bring back Motowners and The Classic Rock sounds.

I am sorry to hear that because Tripp was a super nice guy everytime I called in. Star 94 should have canned the morning messtration if they wanted to put in Dull but "pretty" Ryan. I doubt there is really anyone who cares that he worked there before 'cept his mama. I would like to hear Tripp on the Bull with Kristen Gates, they would make a great team. Star you are starting the new year off very crappily, losing long time listeners hoping the teenagers will think you're cool? Guess what, they don't listen 12-3 you blew it.

Tripp West was all class, and will be missed.
Idiot radio station programmers only listen to “consultants” and they live and die by market research. There are only a handful of DJ’s left on ATL airwaves that actually know music and know metro Atlanta listeners (Lord bless Mara Davis). Those idiots gave us the crapola of the “Morning Mess”???
Thanks for the past 11 years Tripp. And I won’t be listening to Star 94 anymore.

Couldn’t stand to lisen to Cindy in the afternoons. She is so immature. Then when Steve and Vickki left, I tried to listen to that MESS. Couldn’t stand that, so I had to switch stations. Now this. What are they trying to do?

Tripp West and Cindy and Ray are the only good DJs on the station. Granted, I may not have listened to Tripp as much as I would have liked because of work, but he was always one of the best. Steve, Vicki, the Mess, and Nudge are all very odd and very bad. At least C&R talk about interesting things. Tripp seems like a classy, great guy. What a great loss.

Ryan Seacrest only gets the biggest Pop-Icons to stop by his show in LA. Oh, and he hosts the #1 TV show in America! Nobody is naive enough to think all of their TV programming/content is local, so why should they think all radio is local? They just want compelling content so they’ll listen more often and longer. Don’t be a hater, that’s lame and narrow-minded. Give it a listen and then form your opinion. That’s how a reasonable person attacks any situation. PPM is here my friends! Better learn how to program within it’s new applications. If you interview with a GM and can’t go deep with PPM, you might as well stay home!

Too bad. First Star94 gets rid of Steve and Viki and replaces them with the very rude and obnoxious “morning mess”. Now they are getting rid of Tripp West. Cindy and Ray are good but they messed that show up adding that arrogant “spoon” and the stupid kid that does the traffic. They are pretty lame. It once was a great radio station;now it’s an example of what don’t to do!

I quit listening to Star 94 in protest after Steve and Vikki were axed. I’m not much for Top 40, but I always enjoyed the show. When I was younger and Tripp was on the grave yard shift, I’d call and bs with him just to pass the time and we’d talk for hours while he worked.
The new morning show is HORRIBLE!!! I’ve only listened to probably a total of 10 minutes since it started and I can’t stand it. Star 94 should not be for the “young crowd” that is what Q100 is for. I’d listen to Tripp after the morning show was over on occasion, but I religiously listen to The Regular Guys now that they are back on the air.
It’s a shame they are dumping Tripp, he is the best thing on that station. The drive home Dj’s I can’t stand either. Just get rid of the whole lot of them and start over.

For good talk radio, listen to WNIR in Akron, Ohio. 18 hours of local programming featuring myself, Howie Chizek, Bob Golic and Tom Erickson! And best of all, we would never hire Randall Bloomquist. Give a listen at www.WNIR.com!

I get so aggravated to hear STAR and Q100 say they are Top 40 stations when they aren’t. They are “Selected Top 40” stations. Top 40 means you play songs in the Top 40 today; not Top 40 over two years ago. How many times do I have to hear the same song over and over again!
Sirius Satellite Radio is so much better. I pay a nominal fee and have more to choose from! No annoying DJ’s (like Cindy and Ray; Bert and his crew, etc.)
Atlanta Radio…you suck!

I left Star94 back when the Morning Mess came on board (they are HORRIBLE)! I listen to Q100 (LOVE the Bert Show) all day while I am at work and then switch over to XM for the ride home. Tripp can do so much better than Star94….that station is a sinking ship!!!! Good luck Tripp!!!!

STAR 94 became irrelevant years ago as far as I’m concerned. And why do these local stations think they need “talk” and controversy to succeed in teh morning, drive-to-work slots. There hasn;t been a god one for years. Maybe they ought to try some home-spun, long-time resident ‘jockey rather than all these ego-inflated idiots.

I wouldn’t turn the dial away from 92.9 for anyone especially Ryan Seacrest. What’s wrong with Atlanta radio? Simple; they’ve all forgotten waht they are about and what alternatives (ipods, Cd’s) we have now. They should be cutting-edge, not dull as Ryan Seacrest!

Looks like we moved out of Atlanta just in time. I really miss hearing local DJs that are in tune with the community. Nationally syndicated shows do not have local flavor. Nationally syndicated radio is to music like McRibs are to Bar-B-Que. Best wishes, Tripp.

Ryan Seacrest??? Does anyone want to listen to him, it’s not like he’s not all over the place and is annoying and cheesy. Good move Star 94….Now you are even more irrelevant than before!!! Too bad all the 12 year old girls that like Seacrest will be in school while the show is on the air……Tripp did a good job and is an awesome radio talent, good luck to you!

Tripp,
I know you will land on your feet. As we discussed, you have a lot of opportunities before you. You had the drive to make it as a DJ despite many who said you needed to get a real job. And I know you still have the drive and the passion to add much to whatever company you decide to join in the future.
Good luck and see you next time at Disney,

TRIPP WEST IS ONE OF THE BEST MIDDAY DJ’S IN THE AREA AND WAS ALWAYS UP ON NEW MUSIC, AREA NEWS, HAD THE PERSONALITY TO KEEP LISTENERS AND WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING DJ’S AT REMOTES THAT YOU COULD EVER MEET. HE IS COMPASSIONATE, SINCERE AND MOST OF ALL AN ALL AROUND GREAT GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!! OBVIOUSLY ONE OF THE COMMENTS ABOVE WAS CORRECT….IT’S NOT ABOUT THE LISTENERS, IT’S ABOUT THE MONEY……SOMETIMES YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY ALLOW YOU TO MAKE THAT MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
