2/23: Lisa Wu Hartwell sues Keith Sweat for full custody of her kids

“Real Housewives of Atlanta” housewife Lisa Wu Hartwell last Thursday filed for primary custody of her two sons with ex-husband and R&B singer Keith Sweat.
“The best interest of the minor children will be served by modifying the current custody and visitation provisions to make Mother the primary physical condition of the minor children,” according to the court papers filed with the Superior Court of Fulton County. “Since the time of the Divorce Decree, Mother has remarried, owns a successful business and will provide a stable, loving, and nurturing environment in which she can raise the minor children.”
She is seeking “primary physical custody and joint legal custody with final decision-making on all issues regarding the minor children.” She will “reasonably engage Father in good faith discussions before any final decisions are made concerning the children’s welfare.” The two children are Jordan Sweat, age 14 and Justin Sweat, age 11.
If she does get custody, she requests child support as well.
In 2003, Sweat received primary custody of the children. According to the final divorce decree at the time written by Fulton Superior Court judge Cynthia D. Wright, Sweat and Wu Hartwell married in 1992 and had the judge termed at the time an “extremely tumultuous relationship.” Wright wrote that “there is evidence that Father has been violent towards Mother, but no evidence he has ever been violent with any of his children.”
The judge felt the children at the time “lacked structure in their lives, due in substantial part to Mother’s numerous business ventures and frequent trips out of town… Mother has a history of spending money on herself excessively rather than providing for the children… There was some evidence at trial that Mother implicitly participated in robbing Father in the presence of the children. She also took money from Father prior to the initiation of this matter. This behavior causes the Court to question Mother’s maturity and judgment.”
Although Sweat, too, travels frequently, the decree said Sweat’s mom helped care for the children. “Father is capable of providing a stable, secure home environment for the boys where their care is not delegated to random third parties,” the judge wrote.
Wu Hartwell has had visitation rights and has said in past interviews she sees her sons frequently. Neither boy was shown on camera or even talked about on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” because Sweat would not give her legal permission to do so. Sweat is never mentioned by name on the show.
Wu Hartwell is currently married to former NFL player Ed Hartwell. They have a child, who we saw on the TV show, which begins taping its second season today.
Carlos Scott, her publicist, said Wu Hartwell cannot speak on the subject while it’s in the court system. Wu Hartwell said nothing about the custody case oSaturday at her South Dekalb Mall appearance though she did note that her ex-husband didn’t clear her sons to be on the show.
We are currently seeking comment from Sweat, who happens to be promoting his new Peachtree TV special airing this week reuniting the group Dru Hill. Sweat made no mention of the custody case this morning in an interview with Frank & Wanda on V-103.
The complaint does not state how the children are doing currently or provide any overt evidence of problems while the boys are under Sweat’s custody.

Wow, so Kim (the fake blonde on Real Housewives) was wrong in her insinuation that drugs had something to do with Lisa losing custody of her oldest children. Lisa definitely struck me as a clean-cut type of person on the show. But I’m surprised to read Judge Wright’s description of Lisa during her marriage with Keith — she stole his money? That really shocks me but, I guess if you are a stay-at-home wife and have no income of your own at first, it’s believable that they might go to the nearest deep pocket around. Still, Lisa strikes me as a person with a really good head on her shoulders, so I hope she is able to successfully modify custody!

Lisa appeared the be the sane one on the Real Housewives and I continue to think that she has more of a legitimate hustle than the others, however that’s tv. I think every child needs both parents and if she’s ready for the responsibility of two additional kids in her household, I wish her luck. But I still stand by Keith Sweat’s decision against exposes the kids on the show.

Lisa, I wish you the best in gaining custody of your children especially after reading that “there is evidence that Father has been violent towards Mother, but no evidence he has ever been violent with any of his children.” I believe if a father is being violent towards the mother,in any way, he is being violent to the children also! The only reason she wants custody is to get child support. Is she paying him any child support right now? Probably not. Just another wack job trying to get some more money. It did say that she was mmore interested in doing for herself than her own children. I hope the judge doesn’t change a thing. Lisa I pray your level headed appearance on the show is legit. You guys don’t know if she actually relinquished custody because she was fearful that Sweat would kill her. When you are beaten by someone you do not think rationally. Also, as far as, stealing money how do you know she wasn’t trying to bounce. Stealing your husband’s money is no reason to lose custody of your kids to a man who has been violent to you. I can’t imagine her heartbreak when she lost custody. There was nothing in the judge’s report that warranted her losing custody. It sound to me like Keith Sweat had the better lawyer. Now that the kids are 11 and 14 she shouldn’t uproot them.

Lisa wouldve had a better chance of gaining custody if she hadnt asked for child support. Now its going to look like she only wants them cause they (Lisa and Ed) need the money. Keith appears to be a good dad so I seriously doubt he would deny any financial support.
Ed is not working and Lisa is working like a slave. She should just leave the kids with Keith and ask for more time with them….maybe longer holidays and more input in their upbringing.
But I agree….they dont need to be on the show…too much buffoonery.

As previously stated, custody would not have been granted to Mr. Sweat if the mother had been fit. There has to be evidence to substantiate a legitimate claim that she was unfit in some capacity. And, why after 6 yrs. is she requesting custody? I’m inclined to believe that her ends aren’t meeting as they once were and this is a ploy to get extra cash so that she can continue to indulge in the lifestyle that she’s grown accustomed to.

The show is an embarrassment to the City of Atlanta and does not represent the majority of folks living here. The few episodes I watched were full of staged drama and provides no value of entertainment. Ms. Wu-Hartwell bringing her children in the mix at this time is a ploy to increase interest in the show. As a mother, there are not too many women losing their children in a custody dispute. Again, more drama to add to the show. The children are the ones who will be exploited — great call Mom. Oh yeah, what about Ms. Whitfield who was seeking additional alimony because she was unable to provide for herself because she only had a high school education. What are you teaching your children and the young ladies who watch the show? I also recall reading in the AJC that another character in the show lost her home located in Gwinnett County. What is this show really about?

Hello … people … woman that do not have custody of their children are very bad mothers. Judges rarely side with the father unless the mother is horribly UNFIT. I seriously doubt that any Judge will grant her anything, seeing that she has not changed her ways. The Real Housewives does NOT help her case! Wu Hartwell is a complete fraud that just made another studpid mistake. She will not get custody of those boys. Hopefully the current husband will get his head out of the sand before it’s too late.

We are very very sorry that ED can’t get another job in the NFL … he can take a front office job somewhere, or maybe coach at a high school or something.

I think that Keith should remain primary custodian of his sons. It is questionable that after 6 years Lisa now claims to want primary physical custody with child support. Physical abuse towards the mother is never acceptable but for whatever reason the judge gave Keith primary physical custody.I am 100 percent with Keith on keeping his sons off that reality show mess. We need more fathers especially in our black community to take care of their children. I raised 2 children and I honestly regret that my son did not have his father in his life. That was the father’s decsion but still my son could not learn how to be a man from his mother (me)regardless of how loving of a mother I am. He is now college graduate and teaching abroad but still he had zero contact from absent father. I support the boys remaining with Keith. Lisa appears to be looking for some more cash flow income now that her husband is former NFL player. That just is not right. I am not hating but feel these boys are where they should be.

If she has a stable home then she may ask for custody of her children and child support. This is not against the law. That would be left to the judge. Men have done the same to women requesting joint custody. Those are her children and regardless of what people think….She has the right regardless of the past. Was there ever any charges against Keith and those allegations? It sure is about the money most of the time. While Lisa ‘finally’ sounds like she has her act together after so many years, perhaps Keith should see if she is interested in getting back pay for all those years she didn’t contribute? Perhaps she did and no one has mentioned that?
That is Keith’s counter and I’m sure she wouldn’t consider it if that got out. Always good to try, but you better come with a fullproof plan. This doesn’t sound like one. I’m glad the mother decided to come around 6-8 years later and state how much better of a parent she is than the father.

Wow. Just leave the kids with the father at this time. For Mrs. Hartwell to now ask for full custody for the kids seems a little shaky. In most cases, for a mother to loose custody of her children, she must be in pretty bad shape. If there is no documentation to prove that the kids are suffering in being with their father, then the kids need to stay with their father. Also, she should give child support to their father as well. For Mrs. Hatwell to go after her kids now puts her in a bad light.
Eventually the kids are going to find out the real deal anyway. There are ALWAYS three sides to a story: her side, his side, and the truth. The truth will come out soon enough. The kids will be the ones to judge who was really at fault. That is what happen to my brothers and I anyway.

No judge in their right mind will overturn the previous judge’s decision. Wu just want money. This is so ridculous (sp) I sometimes cannot believe the waste of space that celebrity gossip gets on the AJC, I’ve seen better writing in People Magazine. I watched a few episodes of Real Housewives of Atlanta, and I must say all of them are crackpots! I have never seen a bunch of money hungry, self absorbed women in my life. Children are just accessories to them. I read that one of them wanted more money to finance the lifestyle they are used to. WTF! Ummm, I don’t have children so bear with me that I don’t have the experience, but if I am divorced and have a child and need money, I would definately make sure a substantial amount goes to raising my kids, not to the Spa! That show and the other Real Housewives shows should just crash and burn!

What kind of mother loses custody to a father that travels constantly and admitted that HIS mother, the children’s grandmother would provide parental care during his absence? A trifling mother. She should be embarrassed. How many stories have we heard about entertainers’ ex-wives or baby mamas that retained full custody? Boy, she has to be a piece of work. These are the formative years for the boys who should remain with their father instead of their gold digging mother. It is unfortunate that she does not realize the dangers of having her children’s faces plastered across the television screen in today’s environment. Her motives are questionable. She belongs in the “Best Mother’s Club” along with the Octomom.

What kind of mother loses custody to a father that travels constantly and admitted that HIS mother, the children’s grandmother would provide parental care during his absence? A trifling mother. She should be embarrassed. How many stories have we heard about entertainers’ ex-wives or baby mamas that retained full custody? Boy, she has to be a piece of work. These are the formative years for the boys who should remain with their father instead of their gold digging mother. It is unfortunate that she does not realize the dangers of having her children’s faces plastered across the television screen in today’s environment. Her motives are questionable. She belongs in the “Best Mother’s Club” along with the Octomom.

So he abused her but I see that really didn’t matter..and the judge was a woman? I hope Lisa gets justice, every mother wants to be with her kids and Keith Sweat is a jerk I will never buy his CD’S again who supports a woman beater? As a single father who raises his children on his own with no support from their mother I can defend Keith Sweat. Lisa has to prove that he is an unfit father or has unneccesary drama in his life ie her tv show and all that goes on with it. It is sad that a married woman whose husband happens to be a former nfl player and who has many business ventures herself has to ask for child support. Such a CLASSLESS way to get monet. The judge should wonder why after all these years she finally thinks she is ready for them. The boys deserve to stay with their father at this point in their lives. Lisa GROW UP.

You all are speculating let me give you some facts.
I know for a fact that K Sweat was a serious cheater while he was married to Lisa. I had a 20 year old roomate in 1998 that K. Sweat used to damn near stalk, he wanted her so bad. Now in 1998 Keith was 37 years old! He would call our apt. at all times of the night crying & carrying on about this young girl. Buying her things and stopping by the apt. unannounced. If you such a good husband & father, why are you stalking a 20 year old college student?
Secondly, I dated a man after he divorced and won custody of his 2 children (boy & girl)from the SAME Fulton County Judge. So this judge does grant men custody. His ex-wife was educated and drug & alcohol free. The father had a lot more money and influence and used the fact that the ex-wife was “shacking up” to wrestle custody from the mother. The father was a pot head and a drinker but he had more money. This is not all that rare for this judge. Lisa Wu could have just been down on her luck and trying to come up with the money to pay the lawyers and got caught out there during the custody hearing. Ladies, while you’re passing judgement, it could happen to you.

The previous marriage and the events of that marriage don’t matter in this new legal action. Only the events since the last court order will matter as to a child custody decision. The well being of the kids must have taken a turn for the worse since that last court order for an overturn. The 14 year old can decide for himself, which this lady is well aware of and she also know that Judges like to keep kids together. Also, wife abuse is used in 100% of these family court cases to gain an advantage in the final Judgement. The wife abuse claim help with child support amounts, sole custody, etc. The abuse claim often will work like magic even if no police reports exist. It is unlikely that spouse abuse ever happened to this lady as no police reports or court action to sppport these claims exist. With no new negative info against the father, and the 14 year old wanting to stay where he is, will make this very easy work for the Fulton Judge. The mother will lose easily.
