Are you feeling the WBC?

For those who don’t want to waste your time reading a blog without any significant breaking news or major developments, here’s your warning: Don’t read further. Go complain on another blog.

There, that’s out of the way, so anyone still reading, you have no excuse for wasting yours and our time sending e-mail responses lamenting the lack of new information here or telling me to shut up talking about anything but Braves news.

Hang on for just one more week, or slightly longer than that. Then, we’ll have plenty, beginning with Roger McDowell’s pitching camp the first week of February (and no, it WON’T be called Camp Roger, as some TV folks have dubbed it. McDowell has specifically requested that the Braves not refer to it as such, and can’t say I blame him. New era, turn the page).

Now, on to the feeble blog:

Some have asked who will back up Chipper Jones at 3B. Wilson Betemit will, which is why he hasn’t been mentioned in trade rumors since the early part of the winter. Braves have no plans, as of now, to pursue another who could back up Chipper, which leaves only Betemit as proven major league 3B behind the recently injury-prone veteran Jones. Tony Pena could play there if he had to, maybe even James Jurries in a pinch, but Braves aren’t planning on either of those scenarios. And even though Scott Thorman was drafted as a 3B and pitcher years ago, he’s a 1B and LF now and the Braves aren’t thinking of moving him back to 3B, even as a backup. If Chipper needs a breather or gets hurt, Betemit’s the guy who’ll back him up. At least that’s the plan now, unless some 3B falls into the Braves’ laps this spring (doubtful).

One more note on Jurries: If the Braves decide they’re not comfortable with LaRoche playing 1B every day or simply prefer keeping that position a platoon, Jurries could be a serious candidate to replace Julio Franco in the role. Jurries is a right-handed slugger who’s hit 39 homers in 681 at-bats at Triple-A Richmond over the past two seasons. He’ll be 27 in April and now’s the time for him to get a shot with the Braves, if he has a real future with the team. (And yes, for those wondering why the name rings a bell, he’s the guy who tested positive for steroids last season and served a suspension).

What else? Oh, yes: If you’re as unexcited about the World Baseball Classic as I am, please raise your hand.

Just hurry up and play the thing, already. While I understand its significance will resonate in certain countries (just as winter ball does), I have a hard time believing a lot of U.S. sports fans are going to get worked up over glorified exhibition baseball games when the NCAA tournament is going on and the real baseball season is only weeks away (call us myopic, but even soccer’s World Cup doesn’t get a lot of attention in the U.S.).

I think the vast majority of people are so accustomed to the way things have always unfolded, with casual spring-training days rolling into more intensity as opening day approaches, that they’re not going to be able to get very excited about the WBC. Especially since I haven’t even seen a TV contract in place for the thing yet. I mean, if this thing is just on ESPN2 or ESPN Deportes, it might be in trouble).

Or am I wrong? Are a lot of you looking forward to the thing? If so, good for you and MLB. I know they’re counting on it being a success, so we’ll see. Maybe it’ll work. I do know that Dominican team will be a juggernaut. Unlike the US team, the Latin teams aren’t going to have a slew of guys pulling out of this thing. Many superstars from the Dominican, Venezuela and Puerto Rico play winter ball even after signing huge contracts in the majors, simply because it’s part of their heritage and because they’re proud to play in winter-ball playoffs and for their home countries in the Caribbean World Series and, now, this.

The Braves could be heavily represented in the - ho-hum - “Classic” even if Tim Hudson backs out, as he’s expected to do as soon as this week. Seventeen other Braves are on preliminary rosters for teams in the tournament, including at least eight or nine minor leaguers who have no chance of making the Braves’ major league team this spring. From the Braves organization there are three Panamanians, three Canadians, three Australians (four if someone you’ve probably never heard of named Donovon Hendricks plays for Australia instead of South Africa; he has ancestry in both places), and even two on Netherlands roster (Andruw Jones, of course, plus minor league OF Ardley Jansen). I’ll include full list at bottom here, for those interested in Braves who are on conditional rosters.

The marquee Braves who are still planning to play are the Joneses, Chipper and Andruw (for Netherlands) and reliever Chris Reitsma (Canada). Jeff Francoeur is also on the U.S. roster and would love to play, but it seems doubtful he’ll make the final 30-man roster cut, considering the wealth of OF talent the U.S. has on its roster.

Hudson hasn’t made it official, but last week he discussed this with Braves officials and indicated to them that he’ll not pitch in the WBC, after intitially committing to play when manager Buck Martinez surprised him with a phone call to ask if he’d be intersteed. Makes sense if he backs out, because the guy has had issues with side muscle strains for three consecutive years and spent a month on the DL last summer. Like John Smoltz, who reluctantly declined to play in the WBC, Hudson knows the Braves would prefer he avoid risking injury or getting worn down pitching competitive innings so early, and instead focus on preparing for the regular season. But they can’t say this publicly, because teams are supposed to be supportive of this WBC since MLB is pushing it so hard.

OK, that’s all I’ve got for now. I’d recomment that you rent the just-released DVD “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” buy a ticket to see the remarkable singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo this Thursday night at The Earl, and give a listen to a couple of CDs I just picked up _ Danger Doom’s stunningly original and hook-filled “The Mouse and the Mask” and the stellar hard-country Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver - but I don’t want any bloggers bashing me for straying from the subject _ baseball, dammit! They want me to keep it on baseball. Because we can only concentrate on one subject at a time, right?

Later.

Braves on WBC conditional rosters:

Acosta, Manuel, Panama Camarena, Jose, Panama Francoeur, Jeff, United States Hendricks, Donavon, South Africa or Australia Hudson, Tim, United States Jansen, Ardley, Netherlands Jones, Andruw, Netherlands Jones, Chipper, United States Orr, Pete, Canada Reitsma, Chris, Canada Richards, Glen, Australia Rodriguez L., Manuel O., Panama Seguinol, Fernando, Panama Sosa, Jorge, Dominican Republic Stockman, Phil, Australia

David, I enjoy reading your stuff even though I don’t share your taste in music and movies. I loved “Brokeback Mountain”; as good as Heath Ledger is (and he is very good), Jake Gyllenhall (I’m pretty sure I’ve misspelled his name) is every bit as good. BTW, they’re both great baseball names, aren’t they? Okay. Back to baseball. Besides Jurries, is there anyone else you think might be a platoon possibility at 1B? And how about LF? Is Langerhans going to play every day (as I believe he should), or will he platoon with Diaz? Or, do you think (as I do) that the Braves will swing a trade. Thanks again for your insight.

I’m more excited about it with Hudson and Smoltz backing out, though I wish Reitsma would back out too, considering the guy has been strong for the first half of the last two seasons and collapased in the latter, and Chipper as well, as I’d like to see him play a few more games this time around. In other words, I’ll watch the WBC, I’ll feel pride if the US wins, and I’ll be interested in seeing the Braves prospects play. But if any of our players get hurt, I’ll hate it. If any of our players that are competing fade noticably in the second half, I’ll blame it. It’ll be a fun diversion, but only if it’s not at the expense of the ball club.

And to add to Alan’s question, how about Panama’s own Fernando Seguignol? He’s running out of time and hasn’t been very good in the majors before, but is 44 homers in 443 at-bats and a .305 average, along with a history of dominating AAA pitching, enough to show us that he could at least manage a platoon? And any knowledge as to how he is defensively?

Good post DOB. I have to disagree with you on the WBC. I think this will be great and will help get fans in the baseball mood(if it is televised on ESPN, FOX, etc…)I really look forward to the Dominican Team and the US Team. These rosters are loaded with big bombers and I cannot wait to see how this HR derby plays out. As for the Braves you mention Scott Thorman playing LF. Have the Braves invited him to spring training and are they willing to see if he can make the MLB roster? I know he has been in the minors a long time. Also what about Saltamaccha? Are the Braves planning on transitioning him to first base this year at Mississippi? I have heard rumors about this from Mark Bowman and wondering if you had heard anything? Also I have a darkhorse for closer: Oscar Villereal. I heard he was doing very well in winter ball. Any word on what the Braves are thinking and if he is possibly another Kerry Lightenberg or John Rocker(suprise closers)?

I actually think it would do better after the WS is completed and just before the winter leagues really get going. I’m not sure if there would be enough of a break at that time, but I’m not too impressed with having it during spring training (ST). That is a time when guys are supposed to be getting into “playing” shape and meeting new team members. (I know some use ST to get into shape)

I do think it will be interesting to see some of the games though. Of course, the most interesting might be US vs. Domincan Republic. Though, Canada, Puerto Rico and Venazuela will all have strong teams. We’ll see, but the timing is off.

The Braves would be smart to keep Wilson Betemit. He is a very good player who has improved a lot over the last 2 years and proved he belongs in the majors.

I think McDowell will be great for the picthing staff. He should help those young relievers. I was a little disappointed that the Braves did not get a dominant closer, but realize that they have a lot of good young talent for relief. And a few of those guys could develope into the Braves versions of Brad Lidge and Chad Quals. They are doing the right thing by not over spending on older closers. The Mets may be sorry in 2 years, that they signed Wagner for that much money. With the arm injuries he has had, he was too risky to go more than 2 guaranteed years. I still feel the Braves are the team to beat in the NL east. The Mets went out and spent millions, but they have done that in the past.

If the Braves can avoid major injuries, they will be exciting to watch and should contend for that elusive 2nd WS title.

The Braves have signed Mike Remlinger to a minor league deal. On the one hand I feel like that ship has long-since set sail, but on the other hand, maybe he’ll push John Foster out of the picture.

Sorry, those names got screwed up when I posted them. To make it easier to read:

Acosta, Manuel, Panama

Camarena, Jose, Panama

Francoeur, Jeff, United States

Hendricks, Donavon, South Africa or Australia

Hudson, Tim, United States

Jansen, Ardley, Netherlands

Jones, Andruw, Netherlands

Jones, Chipper, United States

Orr, Pete, Canada

Reitsma, Chris, Canada

Richards, Glen, Australia

Rodriguez L., Manuel, Panama

Seguinol, Fernando, Panama

Sosa, Jorge, Dominican Republic

Stockman, Phil, Australia

After I filed this, Braves signed old lefty Mike Remlinger to a minor league deal this afternoon. No big gamble, see if he’s got anything left in that once-durable arm.

As for the questions on Seguinol and Saltalamacchia _ Seguinol’s always had pop and will get a chance to show if he could be a bat off the bench, and Salty is going to start the year behind plate at Double-A, but if he hits like crazy Braves could decide to move him to first base this summer in order to get his bat to majors quicker. Nothing’s been decided on that front, and won’t for a while.

Different tastes in movies? I like the good ones, including Brokeback Mountain. Very good movie. Just not quite as good, to me, as a few others from 2006, including Munich, A History of Violence, Capote and Walk The Line. But I certainly wouldn’t argue with anyone making a case for it as Best Picture.

Have you seen History of Violence or Capote or Walk The Line? And you didn’t like them? Just curious, because you said we had different tastes.

Damn, there I go straying from the subject again. Don’t worry, though, because soon a certain couple of bloggers, whether they go by their usual hilarious handles or an alias, will soon join the fray and get us back on track with the important stuff about “Booby” and Chipper and all that chuckle-inducing stuff.

Any moment now…

Does anyone else other than me think that this off-season has been a huge (or a least a very large) disappointment as regards addressing our roster needs?? When we closed last season we had one large hole to fill —- the bullpen. Now we have several holes: the bullpen, a closer, and a backup first baseman. We managed to increase our holes dispite an abundance of starters, catchers, outfielders, and probably infielders we could have used as trade bait. I understand that JS will probably engineer a trade a two after the season starts, but to my way of thinking it would be far more beneficial to at least have the bullpen in place by spring training so BC would have plenty of time to evaluate talent, and start the process of designating assignments. It would appear the the loss of Farsworth put JS into a state of shock that he hasn’t yet recovered from.

I have to disagree with you Del Young. I think this offseason has been more a success than most would think. Whether you agree with me or not, the Braves got better at SS with Renteria and at leadoff with Giles. He has a higher on-base percentage and his style to go the other way and get on base is what the Braves need out of a leadoff guy with double machine Renteria hitting behind him. It is more than time to allow Laroche show he is an everyday player. I would love to see his swing take out LHPs and should see that avg go up. I am one of the biggest ryan langerhans fans there are and hope he continues his rise and wins the everyday lf job. he was pretty clutch late last season and I wish Bobby would have played him more in the playoffs, but you cannot blame him. Past playoffs he allowed some youngsters to play that should not have(Danny Bautista) and it came back to bite him. I agree with DOB. I wish people on this board would lay off of Bobby Cox. He is a great manager and deserves alot more respect than he gets. It is not entirely his fault that the Braves have won only won WS since 1991. The players have to be held accountable and plus give props to the teams that beat the Braves. They are playoff teams and were better than the Braves in all of those lost series. However I still think the 96 Braves were better than the Yankees and that Eric Gregg really screwed the Braves in 1997. There have been times that the Braves beat teams that should not have been beaten. The 99 Braves had no business being in the world series, the 2001 braves should not have beaten the Astros in one game let alone sweeping the series. Also DOB thanks for the Saltimaccha update. I know there were rumors about the Braves possibly moving him to first since they were so reluctant to trade him or Brian McCann to Tampa Bay for Baez. Also one more question, What are the Braves going to do with Bryan Pena? I thought for sure he would have a chance to backup McCann this year before they got Todd Pratt.

I have tickets to the finals of the WBC. I’m looking forward to it. I’m hoping Barry Bonds will destroy the entire competition with one amazing smash after another. Then, I’m hoping he twists his feeble little knees into a pretzle on his last at-bat, finishing his career and preventing him from over taking Hammerin’ Hank.

Brokeback Mountain. What a dissappointment. I went into that when it was in LA’s art theaters thinking, man what a long time it has been since a western came out. Never in my wildest imagination did I desire to see that story set in a western. (Much less any other time) I longed for the days of William Munny, hoping he would turn up and shoot the whole blasted cast down. “Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it.”

Hey, DOB, what the heck is a WBC? Does it have anything to do with wooly booger? Signing Remlinger and toying with Glavine makes this sound like a reclamation year. Might as well give Mondesi another shot. It is good to have the DOB blog going again. I read on the Bradley blog that Bobby has 14 pennants and is the best manager ever. I guess if he did have 14 pennants I’d say the same thing, too. How did those little signs get to be called pennants? Dig around and see if you can find out for us. We’re not picky.

I’m looking forward to it because of Barry Bonds.

Here’s my logic: I figure that Bonds only has a set number of games left in him. He is aging by the day. So I’m thinking that any exhibition games he plays in can, at least in part, be subtracted from the end of his career. So I say, “Play on, Barry”. Heck, I wish he’d play in the Cape Cod League and the Arizona Fall League. And definitely play in ALL the spring training games.

:o)

I’m with you Gary.

Cox is amazing. In the past 15 years of play-offs I’ve only had to question a few of his moves. Most of my questions have been directed at the idiot throwing the pitch. Farnsworthless! How did you blow a 5 run lead in the eigth in a play-off game?!? Kolb wasn’t even in the dug-out to jinx you!

I was up on Betimit right after the season ended. How could you not be? He hit .300 in the pro’s and played a solid defense. Then he started burning down the winter leagues. But the last report had him in a massive slump and not looking good. I’m much happier with him as a back-up than a starter. I have nightmares that he’ll take the Mark DeRosa path to professional baseball. Boy that got ugly real quick.

I’m glad to see some one else out there sees the lead-off stats Giles has. He looks good. And he hits doubles and homers. He’ll be on base in scoring position more from the swing of his bat than from his speed, which is nice. Renteria is a fabulous “clutch” hitter, even in his off year last year. And his off year looked more like a Furcal regular year: batting under .300 and make 30 errors.

The Braves off-season moves haven’t been as eye-popping as the Mets, or other teams, because the Braves have a great nucleous to work with. The Mets on the other hand will have to make headlines every off-season from here till Omar resigns to fill all the wholes left by aging veterans.

2006 is looking good so far.

David, I’m pretty excited about WBC and I wish ESPN televised winter league champion games, I would love to see Pete Orr’s dugout interaction with his latin american team!

Mike Remlinger is still out there, any chance we bring him back?

MF DOOM’s best CD’s: “Madvillany” (with DOOM and Madlib, a bad-a** jazz beat pillager) and “MMM…Food.” (hit and miss - long weird/jumbled middle tracks, but 1-5 and 10-14 are clutch)

Ohh and how close were we to getting Chris Benson a few years back? ? ? Mets dump Zambrano and they will get rid of all those bad bad bad moves they made back in 2004 (and while we are on that subject, to all the people hating on JS and the OFF-season we are having, reflect on your zin Buddhist teacher who tried to explain how not moving is going forward and be damn glad we have an organization that is not going to sink loads of $$$ into a Danny “yeah right” Baez.

We will need a closer for the post-season, trade for him like Fans, this time he wont choke, Braves go to the NL Championship (at least).

Ohh Dangermouse and Cee-lo have a CD coming out, name: Gnarles Barklery (how cool is that!).

Wow, almost too much artsy counterculture here. The blog may experience meltdown at any moment. Good stuff, gents.

And yes, that was regrettable to call those division flags “pennants.” But my man Bradley didn’t mean anything by it. Not like he doesn’t know they aren’t NL pennants.

Hey, the man went to Kentucky and his hoops team is out of sorts these days, so give him a break (come to think of it, so is my KU team, so give ME a break).

Fairly close to getting Benson couple years back. Alas, Anna has taken their act to Baltimore. ‘Tis a shame. But the couple does make its offseason home right here in greater Atlanta. Maybe we could get Anna to join the blogosphere here. Maybe she could link to her own website or something.

If you are Betemit and you are the primary backup at SS, and you played a credible 3B while Chipper was out, and everyone touts you as ready for a starting job, and with Furcal leaving the team makes it clear that they are pursuing someone - anyone at SS, and they sign Chipper through 2025 for 3B, then maybe you lose some of your feeling for the organization and your future there. Would you slump a little maybe? Can’t say that’s it - but maybe Betemit is disgusted. Doesn’t he have the same agent that represents Furcal? DOB may be right about Betemit sticking as a backup but he may decide he wants to play somewhere else. Somewhere that he has a future.

OK Booger, now you’re getting me in trouble responding to your post. I assumed you meant Bradley had referred to the division flags as “pennants,” so after commenting I went back and read his blog and column. Mainly because I couldn’t believe Mark would make that mistake.

Of course, he wouldn’t and didn’t. He never referred to them as pennants, at least anywhere I could find. You must’ve been referring to a blogger’s response. Anyway, now I owe Bradley an apology for even implying he might have made that mistake.

By the way, I liked his column on Bobby and Cowher today. Interesting comparison. But I don’t like his Duke vs. Connectict pick for the NCAA title game. Too easy. They’re probably the best two teams, but no more than one of them will make the title game.

I’ll go with Michigan State and Texas for the title.

I wish they sold PBR at the Ted.

Is there anyone who can light a fire under Wilson Betemit? What was his and Julio’s relationship and who is going to lead the spanish speaking braves? Will Julio’s departure hamper J Sosa’s success?

Hey DOB, I never meant that Bradley himself called them pennants. It was a blogger. In fact, a lot of bloggers seem to think they’re pennants. Bradley is too sharp to make that mistake. At least I thought he was sharp ‘til I read that Mike Vick is a role model and Peyton Manning is a loser. Anyway, that ain’t baseball and this is a baseball blog. Let’s try to keep it open so we can talk some baseball - and an occasional booger. By the way, teams maybe aren’t supposed to say they want their players to skip the wooly booger classic but that’s what the Brewers are doing with Sheets. Very vocally. Think the commish will come down on them hard?

I’d imagine if Betimit really valued a career in pro-baseball he’d play his little heart out proving he can hang with the big boys at the top level of the game, even it is as a back up. He’ll be a free agent in due time. And he’s always one Chipper injury away from starting. That alone almost assures him of at least 6 weeks of starts on the big stage in front of at least a dozen other clubs. That’s his job interview right there.

Slumping because you’re disgruntled is a character trait only the Yankees and Mets really seem to cherish. When Roman Colon did so he was traded away, same with Capellon. I liked those two guys buy I kept reading reports about how they’d complain and rant about not getting what they want. The Braves front office has done a great job of keeping the winning tradition in the clubhouse, and that means personal sacrifice for the sake of the team.

But on another note, I’m sure he’d be very happy to play full time and would rather do so. If he really wants it, he’ll play hard when he’s called on and a great teammate when he’s not.

And, if the front office doesn’t think he’s ready, I’m of the frame of mind to trust them. They did trade Thomas and Cruz, two guys I thought would be bigger peices, for Hudson. That turned out really well.

TP, don’t know what else WB could do for the Braves. He was a top prospect - and he developed slowly - in fact it was an agonizingly slow development. But he seems ready now - at least to a layman. He came in for Chipper and we lost nothing. WB did the job at the plate - and probably played a better 3B. For some reason, the Braves didn’t want him at SS, (too slow, too big, too something) and that was made apparent. I agree that he should bust it and be the best player he can - not just to showcase himself -and it appears he has done just that. But, as you mentioned he hit a slump. Maybe, just maybe, he has lost some confidence and resultingly, some drive. Yes, he is a sore big toe away from starting at 3B but he is not the future - not anymore. I think the Braves made that call when they shopped so hard for a SS.

Hey DOB -

Trades mean little with your favorite ball club when the talk of baseball is this “Classic” is taking up the waves. I cannot comment on anything else with the Braves as I am not a Braves fan…..i still don’t believe in calling them “America’s Team”…America’s team is our young men and women putting their lives on the line for this wonderful country. They are the real winners.

Bryan, just remind the dude with the first-edition “On The Road” that Jack Kerouac started out as a sports writer. Seriously. In Lowell, Mass. Look it up.

But I seriously doubt if it’s a first edition, anyway. If so, he’s crazy for carrying it around. Put that baby away for safekeeping. I’ve got first-edition copies of Hunter Thompson’s Hell’s Angels and The Great Shark Hunt, but sure didn’t have ‘em when I was going to school. Ah, but those trust-fund brats have more expendable income than they know what to do with.

As for Flaming Lips _ I think two albums that’ll hold up well are The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The Lips’ earlier stuff sounds a bit dated now, but that latter stuff is outstanding.

Speaking of bulletins _ what a transition _ Betemit got the unwritten one last year when he finally realized he needed to step up and produce or be gone. And while he had a relatively outstanding season (easily his best in a few years, after lackluster performances at Triple A) he still didn’t hit for much power and he’s still slow on the basepaths.

But he’s got good hands, good arm and decent range, and he should be able to stick around for a while in the majors, either as a utility guy or maybe a starting 3B or SS for someone. But Braves don’t have to worry about him leaving as a free agent for a few more years _ dude’s only got a bit over 1-1/2 years of service time, and will be cheap for another year after this coming one.

well dave o’brian i think you may be auditioning for a new type of position with the paper. kinda spreading your wings to show bredth of knowledge. really good eclectic stuff cant wait to check out the music. it’s as though i’m reading men’s journal and taking a break from the real geeks that will be back in full force when the season starts. you know the guys that are constantly talking stats so they can give out the “rispy award’ at the end of the season. ooh that is catchy and i like it and you know my true thoughts about that stat. anyway, they will push me out of the way soon and clip your wings dude, much to my distress as i really like this aproach.

as far as this rediculous thing that is called the wbc, it is as if someone was watching after tour professional golf and thought this up as a way to make money from players out of season. it is as inane as silly season golf and really all it is but someone has to be making an easy buck or else it wouldnt be on the horizon.

dave to really get serious, btw cudos for the mention of flaming lips yohimi album, it blew me away when i heard it. i will check out some of the other stuff as they came along way after my time.

is it possible to get anna to be our official blog mascot and invite us to the christening of the parking lot in baltimore? or at least take pictures that you could send to the real baseball fans that know what is important in the game of baseball and it aint wbc? i really appreciate how supportive she is of her man!

“the wand” is the new flaming lips single. It rocks pretty damn hard (but still with the airy lips sound. If you guys care, check out the Lips DVD Fearless Freaks, its one of the best bio-pics of a band I’ve ever seen (even if your not a lips fan). The band allowed unfettered access to the director (and long time friend) so its got some really intense family stuff … stands up well on its own as a movie.

I’m pumped about Mike being back, this will be the first “sans-leo” reclamation project. Twill be a good litmus for the future. Regardless if it is true, Braves might get some negative press if Mike fails to get it back together, leading outsiders to call out the Roger and the Leo-less Braves.

Last thing, what’s the deal with Fan Day at the Ted? Can we really shag balls in the outfield? Will it just be people let out there to roam and play catch or is it more organized?

Who all will be there? Is Edgar making the trip?

(cool about Jack K, Dave, falls into the “I did not know that” category.)

Doc, I like your way of thinking. Since Anna’s … er, Kris … is now in the AL, no reason she (Anna) couldn’t be mascot for a blog in the NL, right? Since it wouldn’t be an inner-divisional conflict, as it would’ve been if hubby was still toeing the slab for the Metropolitans.

And your right about the return of the regular crowd, I’m afraid. Or maybe if I just started ever blog with the warning that there’s nothing new here and please go complain somewhere else, we could keep this thing to the sane among us who only need one or two booger stories and Chipper slurs per blog.

Alas, that probably wouldn’t work. By morning, they probably will have reclaimed this space with their clever banter and witty missives. But it was fun while it lasted.

I lived in Lowell, MA for a while and I knew that little fact about Jack Kerouac. Like Kerouac, lot of people in that area are descended from French-Canadians, one of whom I dated. Anyway, Kerouac worked for the Lowell Sun as a sportswriter for several months and gave it up to join the Navy during WWII and eventually settled on the occupation being a drunk and writing some good books.

I’m a big Dylan fan (see “Visions of Johanna”) and know a little bit about the “beat generation” that helped influence his early career. Getting off on a tangent here, the thing that astonishes me the most about artists is the way in which admirers pigeon-hole them into whatever they seek or desire. Why is it that a famous person isn’t allowed to change without red flags being raised? Why is it that an average person wouldn’t recognize the same changes that take place in his own life and, when at last the recognition is achieved, shrug his shoulders and say, “That’s life?” In my opinion, anyone who would buy a first edition of “On The Road” and read it in a bar under uplifted nose (a generalization, I’m sure) misses the point of that sort of literature, which is to live it. What’s the point in reading about it if you can’t relate to it in a tangible way?

Anyway, as for the WBC, I’m feeling it like a jackhammering headache-marred hangover. I’m convinced Barry Bonds pulled out of the WBC because of the drug testing. In fact, I’m waiting for the backlash of people who are “tired of hearing about steroids” to jump to Bonds’ defense and say, “Who cares?” Well, I just hope the guy doesn’t get the home run record.

Hey, Chop Chop,

Did you know Dylan was booed on stage when he first started playing rock music instead of folk? You can listen to the list couple of shows on CD and you can hear people in the crowd yelling “Judas.”

hey bryan that is the famous bootleg album that made the circuit for many years before it came out in a produced form to be had by the likes of you and me. it is called the bootleg series live from royal albert hall. you can also clearly hear dylan’s response to them that wouldn’t be allowed by the blog police. get it if you havent already, historical with great energy. it is truly transformative. their also is a good documentary on dylan that has some of the live film of that concert as well.

it is wonderful to know that some have a life out there and a culture beyond the braves.

now back to important topics, who is going to win the rispy award next year? bet it wont be andruw because we all know he cant hit in the clutch.

NOT!

Doc, yeah, my parents (Dad) made sure I wouldn’t miss something like the albert hall re-issue a few years back (better for its history, i think Dylan - Rolling Thunder Review is his best live stuff, thats f’ing rock-n-roll).

If you have iTunes you can download for free the four part PBS series No Direction Home from the Podcast/music section. That paints a really good story of Dylan’s early stuff (ending with the Albert Hall/Crankin up the guitar period).

Have you heard the Blood on the Tracks: New York Sessions? Brilliant! Check it out if you cant find it, its a stripped down version of one of the best albums ever.

Ohh Braves stuff … Derosa get a real shot this year (for the second time) in TX, I hope the kids does well. I miss Chucky T, but what an example of how a kid can have one good summer and then turn into a history making trade for Hudson - positives breed positives. You think teams see that (young stars diminish away from the Braves), so teams back away from big trades for our prospects who have one good year?

Oh and The Band is one of the best rock bands ever (see music from the big pink if you have any questions).

All this talk about a right handed hitter to platoon with Laroche. How about taking a flier on Frank Thomas? If it doesn’t work out you release the guy in the spring and it doesn’t cost much more than the Mondesi gamble from last year. But wouldn’t it be great to have his bat coming off the bench in late inning situations with the game on the line. He played at Auburn so he would have an instant fan base, and hey if he is healthy and productive wouldn’t we all look like geniuses. Replace him in the field in the late innings with LaRoche like we did with Franco and it would be an ideal situation. But then again, if you are going to take a chance on a future hall of famer, then Sosa in Left field with Langerhans wouldn’t be a bad gamble either. Later.

Here’s a nice recipe for cherry pie: Makes about as much sense in a baseball blog as what we’re getting here today.

INGREDIENTS: 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie 4 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 cup white sugar 4 cups pitted cherries 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 tablespoons butter

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Place bottom crust in piepan. Set top crust aside, covered. In a large mixing bowl combine tapioca, salt, sugar, cherries and extracts. Let stand 15 minutes. Turn out into bottom crust and dot with butter. Cover with top crust, flute edges and cut vents in top. Place pie on a foil lined cookie sheet —- in case of drips! Bake for 50 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown.

David, our tastes in movies are compatible: all the movies you mentioned are very good; next for me is “Match Point.” However, I have no idea what bands you’re referring to. Might have something to do with a slight difference in our ages. I became a Braves fan in 1954 (H. Aaron’s rookie year), no doubt a couple of decades before you were born. So, I go back to the days of REAL R&B (Billy Ward and the Dominoes, featuring Clyde McPhatter), not today’s cheap imitation (aka “rap”; left out the opening “c”). Anyway, back to baseball. I read somewhere yesterday that the Indians may be trading Coco Crisp to the Red Sox for Andy Marte and another prospect. And another deal has them trading David Riske or another pitcher to the Phillies for Jason Michaels. Any truth there? I like Michaels, by the way.

Well David, I really do enjoy your taste in music and films. I especially like that you interject it randomly in your blogs to keep us from being too one dimensional. Speaking of interjecting I really did enjoy “Brokeback Mountain” the most this year. As for baseball, I agree with you on the WBC. Not feeling it at all. I especially don’t care which American-born player plays for which “mother country.” Besides, I don’t like that MLB takes away from the right of passage Spring Training has become to the regular season. Winter ball in the Carribean is great. Leave it be if you want to continue to grow the sport on an international level and continue to fix the problems that exist internally. The now defunct Expos had to move and the constant talk of moving the Marlins, Royals, A’s. They have more to figure out here than they do in Japan.

Two things. What moron was unclear about who’d be the backup thirdbaseman for the Braves? When Chipper was hurt last year Betemit and Marte played in his stead. One of them hit well and fielded excellently and is still on the roster. The other stunk up the joint at the plate and was decent but not impressive in the field and was traded. No other thirdbasemen were added to the roster this offseason. I’m not a rocket scientist, but my deductive reasoning led me to know that Betemit would be the backup (as well as the SS backup). Who couldn’t figure that out? Geeez. No wonder these blogs are filled with dribble most times.

Second thing. WBC. I’ll watch it, because its baseball. And that’s the point isn’t it? But I’m worried about any Braves who play, fearing they might get hurt in a meaningless tournament. Particularly either of the Jones’s. Our offense cannot survive without them. What exactly is MLB trying to accomplish with the WBC? Are they trying to inspire nationalistic enthusiasm? Then why not do what hockey has done and make the all-star game a US vs. the World (obviously scrapping the “this one counts” tie in with homefield in the world series for a team with the best record is the host stipulation)? It just seems like Selig is reaching here. He’s trying to leave his mark and change the subject from steroids. If it aint broke don’t fix it. Mark my words, it’ll only take one significant injury suffered in the WBC for all star players to pull out and end the whole thing.

Living in sunny south Florida (Palm Beach Gardens representin!), I am very disappointed about this WBC crap. Why has nobody mentioned that fans attending Spring Training games down here are going to see AAA players instead of the big guys who will be representing their countries. Am I supposed to be happy getting autographs from Richmond’s finest? News flash: I’m not! Players don’t seem excited about it and what do the countries win anyway???? Oh, “big props” to the U.S….you just won the WBC! Oh, wait…..NOBODY CARES!

WBC…not interested. I’d rather the players be concentrating on getting ready for the upcoming season with their respective teams. This tournament is an Oylympic-like thing only with more players we’ve heard of. Not enough people were interested in Olympic baseball so it got phased out. Why do we need this?

Buttback mountain ? a gay western , are you kidding me ????? I must be homophobic. Anyway ,here is my musical contribution. Metallica has a track off their Garage Inc. CD disc 2 titled “So What” It’s freaking amazing and you won’t ever hear it on the radio as it’s too adult for the air waves. Big Frank Thomas would be a nice pick up if he is affordable. it appear’s that JS is stockpiling arms again for spring training. Remlinger was a nice addition. I’m pumped for the grape fruit league. I’m predicting right NOW that Jeff Francour is going to have a MONTRUOS season !!!! Yes the Bravos are going to win the division again. So enjoy the ride people ,I remember the 70’s and late 80’s. GO BRAVOS !!!!! Now , gotta go find my stash of weed and pop in some Tom Petty , Peace !!!!

I feel the need to contribute, so here is Grandma Moses’ recipe for Double Mucous Booger Brownies, hope you like them…First things first tho, ingredients, this requires a few brisk slaps to the back of Boogie Cox’s head…OK now that you have the ingredients in hand which are 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, 5 ounces undried mucous, 2 cups sugar, 1 tablespoon instant-espresso powder or instant-coffee granules, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 4 large eggs, 1 cup all-purpose flour, and last but not least 3/4 cup semidry boogers. Now preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a 15 by 10 by 1-inch baking pan with foil, allow 2 inches of foil to hang over edge of pan, and grease foil well (except overhang) with 1 tablespoon butter. Melt remaining 11 tablespoons butter with undried mucous in a large metal bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water, stirring until smooth. Remove bowl from heat and whisk in sugar, espresso powder, vanilla, and salt (mixture will be grainy), then add eggs 1 at a time, whisking after each addition until batter is smooth. Toss together flour and semidry boogers in another bowl and add to batter, stirring until just combined. Spread concoction evenly in baking pan and bake in middle of oven until top is crusty and edges just begin to pull away from sides of pan, about 20 minutes (do not overbake). Cool in pan on rack 5 minutes, then carefully lift Grandma Moses Double Mucous Booger Brownies from pan by grasping both ends of foil and transfer to rack to cool 10 minutes more. Cut into 32 squares and pick off foil with spatula and rubber gloves…ENJOY!!!…

Maybe someone has mentioned this already, I didn’t read every post, but I am totally against any MLB players playing in this classic. What happens if a player gets hurt playing this stinking exhibition crap, then will it be worth it? Chipper is walking medical case anymore and so is Hudson. I know October is cold in most parts, but why not play this stinking (see above) after the MLB season is over?

Bryan, the Dylan documentary that was four parts on PBS was released at same time on DVD, with many extras including performances. The entire thing is a must-have for any serious music fans of the last half-century. Buy it for a friend. Buy it for yourself. Steal it (kidding, sort of).

And by the way, three other music documentaries well worth owning, all released in past couple or three years and equally fantastic: Dig (about Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre), Some Kind of Monster (Metallica) and End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones.

Robert (Justice is the best), I agree with you that the games will be very competitive. In fact, I have a bad feeling that there will be more injuries than anticipated due to lack of conditioning. That is guys not being in “game playing” condition; as most players still work out during the off season.

Like I said yesterday, it would make much more sense to have the WBC after the World Series. Guys are all still in “game playing” condition and if there are any injuries, the player will have the off season to heal. Besides, Spring Training (ST) is for guys to start playing together to get the team chemistry working. This is impossible when most of the super stars are playing in the WBC while the others are working out in ST.

MLB needs to reconsider the timing of the event.

Colonoscopy is the minimally invasive endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed thru the anus. It may provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy of suspected lesions. Virtual colonoscopy, which uses 3D imagery reconstructed from computed tomography (CAT) scans, is also possible, as a totally non-evasive medical test, although it is not standard and still under investigation. Colonoscopy is similar but not the same as sigmoidoscopy. The difference between colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy is related to which parts of the colon each can examine. Sigmoidoscopy allows doctors to view only the final part of the colon, while colonoscopy allows a complete examination of the colon…GO METS!!!…

I’ve never heard the original “So What”, but I’m damn certain that James and the boys did it better. That actually wouldn’t be a bad theme song for a hitter to have every time he strolls up to the plate. If the Braves had had more players over the years, let alone hitters, with attitudes like that, they’d probably have a couple more World Series rings.

Males begin to range widely in February and March, often leaving their territories in search of a mate. During mating season, the males are very excitable and spray large animals and humans at random.

Well, it took longer than I thought, but the familiar voices are back. Ignoring the plea in the opening graphs of the original post, and determined to get this thing back on course!

I can practically see them sitting there: “Damn straight, boys. People here talking ‘bout books and record albums and moving pictures and all that nonsense … let’s talk hardball. Better yet, let’s talk about how much the home team stinks and how much folks pick their noses and chase girls. Whooeeee!”

But seriously, if some people didn’t know better, they might think a certain few unanamed people posting here resent that so many others are carrying on conversations about subjects those certain people don’t know anything about.

Hey, the floor’s open. Rather than fill space here with nonsensical sentences _ just like when you’re a kid and someone’s talking and you just sing or go la-la-la-la to ignore them, isn’t it? _ and rather than proving you have google by cut-and-pasting paragraphs from stories nobody here cares about, why not offer something insightful on great westerns or great stock-car drivers (I grew up in N.C. when Richard Petty was still The King _ or whatever else interests you outside the Braves? Or does nothing else interest you or matter enough to discuss? Are we strictly limited, as far as you’re concerned, to discussing the Braves here in mid-January, two weeks before we’ll be discussing nothing more than the Braves and baseball after they actually start doing things again that matter.

Anyway, sorry a bunch of us took away from the Braves-only blog in mid-January. Let’s get back to discussing backup first basemen and trades that won’t happen Better yet, more stories about how much the team stinks and this player or that sucks because he didn’t sign an autograph for you or you don’t like how he smiles and looks like he’s too happy for your tastes.

It’s all yours. Let’s hear what you can bring to the table, if you want to seriously discuss baseball and not just rehash the same old garbage and tell more entirely unfunny stories.

DOB, here’s an idea: Do a blog on what music various Braves players listen to. I know that’s not usually a sportswriter’s job, but a lot of sports fans don’t read the entertainment section anyway. That way, the people on here might be able to more easily relate to the guys as “real people.” Also, that will allow you to indulge your interest in music. It’s a win-win.

Of course, I’d rather hear about the “Johan Santana to the Braves for Wilson Betemit and Horacio Ramirez” trade, but I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. Seems like equal value to me. Eric, I think my team (KU) will and your team (UK), well, I don’t know. I find it hard to believe they won’t start playing better and win just enough games to get in on reputation. Jayhawks played much better Saturday, but it was only Nebraska. Still, with exception of K-State game week before, and the meltdown in last minutes of Mizzou game, KU’s improved vastly for past month or so, over first month or two. Robert, a Chipper story doesn’t come to LeTwan right now - but it’s hard to get this other story out of LeTwan’s mind. Let’s give it a go …

A medical student was in the morgue one day after classes, getting a little practice in before the final exams.

He went over to a table where a body was lying face down. He removed the sheet over the body and to his surprise he found a cork in the corpse’s rectum. Figuring this was fairly unusual, he pulled the cork out, and to his surprise, he heard typing and the words, “There is no news on the Braves today so we’ll talk music until some of you fans want to talk boogers.”

The student was amazed, and placed the cork back in the rectum. The typing stopped. Totally freaked out, the student called the Medical Examiner over to the corpse.

“Look at this. This is really something!” the student told the examiner as he pulled the cork back out again.

More typing. “And, those Chipper jokes, they’re not funny.”

“So what?”, the Medical Examiner replied, obviously unimpressed with the student’s discovery.

“But isn’t that the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen?” asked the student.

“Are you kidding?” replied the Examiner, “Any asehol can be a baseball writer.”

And while your all meansing … go buy Gillian Welch Time (the Revelator) as weird and stunning as any bluegrass folk music ive heard in a while. Totally grows on you… almost creepy and beautiful at the same time.

Dave, this seems like the most you have responded back in a while, thats cool, thanks for the dialogue and music talk. (check out the New York Session: Blood on the Tracks, there is a great story about it, something like Dylan took it to x-mas and his brother told him it sucked cause it was to quiet and slow so Dylan re-recorded it to be the Blood on the Tracks that was released. As you can imagine the quiet and slow version of that album is awesome with some very different lyrics on “Idiot Wind” and “Lily, Rosemary, and the JoH” )

letwan, i took you for a different type of man. the way you dish it out whether it be cherry pie or whatever. i thought you were the type that could give and take and not fail to see some humor in yourself knowing i have complimented you in many ways through the months. just didnt think you were that serious about yourself especially when you trash others like you just did to dob. i am glad you have a bit of an alter ego that can interceed occasionally as well as a rich industrious and imaginative mind.

my apologies sincerely.

Dave—Dparks has been a non-factor for 90% of the year…But hope is still there. Did you see the game this past saturday where he hit the 30 footer to give UK the lead with seconds to go? Big shot. He has done well the past 2 games. I think 15pts-12pts apiece. The thing with UK is, for them to do well, Sparks has to be on. Things fall in place for the most part after that. Especially with Morris back, and playing exceptionally well. DBL and Triple teams occur and open things up even more for Sparks and Co.

Only time will tell. KU does have some insane Frosh. I still have nightmares of Rush carving us up. But I cant help but think had the game been played a few months later, the out came possibly could be different. Doesnt matter now, got to hand it to em. Should be a dangerous team if they make it in.

Regards

Eric

DOB, are you going to be at the Fanfest on the 4th? Got any good insider info on it?

letwan, doc says he admires you greatly. doc also always tries to use punctuation appropriately but admires free stream of thought and e.e. cummings greatly. doc does not wish to offend anyone with his style of punching out these words one at a time. doc would love to type better but found it more fun to get a girl to do it for him in high school and college. sometimes i got to stay up all night writing term papers at the last minute. doc knows you are a smart man and would approve even if your mama didnt.:-)

Booger, respectable comments, regardless of my delay in responding. We’ll see what Betimit can do this year. But, I’m still not far enough removed from DeRosa to be 100% behind the guy. I was highly interested when he was the big prospect. I’m curious to see how Marte will do after being trade once a month in the off-season. He didn’t look so hot in the bigs last season.

The Flaming Lips put on an incredible show. I was fortunate to see them play about a year ago out here in LA. They opened for the Chili Peppers, who were quite amazing themselves. But man, I’ve never seen a show like the one the Lips put on. They mastered their songs and it was very imaginative and exciting. Quite a trip.

DOB if you haven’t checked them out yet, Rilo Kiley is a personal favorite. I caught their act 5 or 6 years ago in this whole in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. I went to see this band, the Killingtons, who were the big deal back then and have since passed away. RK pummeled them with an incredible show. Ever since I’ve been attending the CD release shows and as many dates as possible. They’ve played a few times in Atlanta as well. Jenny Lewis, the lead singer, also showed up on the Postal Service album working with the front men of Death Cab for Cutie (a great Seattle band). And, let’s face it, Jenny is just down right adorable. Anyway, Rilo Kiley isn’t as big as Dylan or the Lips, but they’re totally worth the listen. You can pick them up at most major stores.

I can’t wait for the WBC to begin. It’s going to be great seeing top baseball talent on display in March instead of the usual boring spring training games. I can ‘t wait.

doc, you look good in third person. LeTwan approves of your new style. And, yes, LeTwan recognizes now that “I am a small eye poet.” Now, we just brought something new to the table as DOB suggested.

Tennessee Paul, got the last Rilo Kiley CD and loved it. You know she’s got a solo CD that came out either today or last week (I think today). I’d like to see them live, but would really love to see the Lips live. I’ve heard nothing but outstanding reviews of their shows. I wish I’d seen ‘em last time they were in Atlanta.

Bryan, I’ve got the expanded Last Waltz on DVD. Probably the best live-show movie ever, though the double DVD doc that Led Zep put out last year kicks some tail as well. And Gillian Welch is so good. I’ve got three of her CDs, including Time the Revelator. The one with “Morphine” on it is incredible.

Oh, and dude that hates Terrence Moore: Who cares? Long as you’re reading every word he writes, which I bet you are, and every word on this blog, which I know you are, then we’ve set out to do what we want to do _ get a reaction.

So think up some clever name to use _ like David O’Boogersh**, though that one will be tough to equal _ and fire off another reply.

letwan, doc is pleased that the master approves of the small cap third person and you are what you want to be. doc looks forward to the bball season shenanigans when the wbc is over. doc guesses that makes him look forward to something about the silly season baseball event called the world baseball congress. now who thought up that meaningless name.

Well, told myself I’d bail this time when the conversation got tedious, and now that the guffaw-producers have rejoined the group, it’s that time.

L.A., your audience awaits more of your humor. Hey, that’s cool. My tastes run more toward comedians like Bill Hicks and David Cross, shows like Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc. But I can see where some would find you funny.

So they’re all yours, dude. Until next week, have at it. Reminds me of Lord of the Flies, how you have that little group that literally cheers you on. That’s kinda cool.
