Unnatural Beauty

I was listening to Q100’s The Bert Show once and I remember a young lady who called into the show about a dilemma she had. Apparently, she was engaged to be married but was now having second thoughts about it. She was shocked after seeing pictures of her fiancee from his youth. She didn’t know that he had extensive cosmetic surgery before college. The way he looked today was totally different from what he looked like before. She said that she was “concerned” that their children would turn out ugly. Since she found out his looks weren’t “natural”, her entire image of him changed completely. If you found out that your mate altered their appearance with plastic surgery, would it bother you? How would you react if you found out someone you are dating had plastic surgery?

Recently, I struck up a conversation with a young lady while we were waiting for spa treatments. She mentioned that her boyfriend of three months suggested that she get breast implants. Since she never really felt comfortable about her size before, she agreed. He was going to pay for the procedure and suggested that she get “nipped and tucked” in her problem areas. I was surprised that a new boyfriend’s opinion of her body mattered so much. I am not sure how I would have reacted, but I imagine that the way he broached the topic wasn’t rude or mean. However, how much say should he really have about her looks? If she were married to him, it would be a bit different, but I still feel that it would be wrong to ask your mate to alter the way they look to make you happy.

Why do you think plastic surgery is on the increase so much? Are folks using it as a tool to maintain their looks or increase their self-esteem? Perhaps both?

I have watched shows about the horrors of cosmetic surgeries but it doesn’t seem to be deterring anyone from getting it. Some people are even saying they are “addicted” to plastic surgery, not able to stop at just one procedure. If plastic surgery is so common, do you think natural beauty is being redefined?

Because society dictates to the shallow what is beautiful or acceptable. The lady was right to be upset with her mate having had plastic surgery and not revealing that info. You can walk around looking like Barbie and Ken to the world, but your kids can come here looking like a gremlin, because plastic surgery doesn’t change your genes.

GOOD MORNING ALL, I SAY IT WILL BE OK IF MY MATE (IF I HAD ONE) HAD PLASTIC SURGERY I CAN’T HAVE ANY MORE KIDS SO IT WOULD NOT MATTER TO ME AS LONG AS I LIKE THE PERSON I’M COOL. NOW ON THE OTHER HAND SHE IS CORRECT IN THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOUR CHILDREN MAY/MAYNOT LOOK LIKE. BUT HEY THAT IS SHURLY ONE THING NO ONE CAN BANK ON THE OUTCOME OF THE LOOKS OF KIDS BUT GOD. SORRY, YOU COULD BE WITH WHAT WE THINK THE UGLIEST MAN BUT HAVE THE MOST ADORABLE KIDS IN THE WORLD, GO FIGURE.

Morning all!

Good topic Wise. I was thinking about this just the other day. I think the day of natural beauty is gone. If you don’t have enough hair or your hair isn’t thick enough - you buy some. Not blessed with thick eyebrows - draw them on. Not blessed with thick lashes - glue them on. Now those forms of unnatural beauty have been around for some time - but now you don’t get ‘points’ for being natural.

And the popularity of plastic surgery has taken it to a whole ‘nother level. I understand the girl from the radio’s concern to a certain degree. Most of you know I’m a teeth person. And the jaw line is hereditary. Now - if I married a man with jacked up teeth, we could get the child braces - but I wouldn’t want any surprises. I met this guy a few weeks ago with the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen. I mean I was infatuated with his mouth. So I asked him and he said he’s had braces and he gets his teeth whitened.

as you all know…i have been TALKING about getting lipo for the two years that we’ve been blogging…

now that i’m getting really close to having the available funds to do it…i find myself up at the crack of dawn every morning during the week doing a 2.5 mile walk…5 miles on the weekends…the only thing that keeps me from walking is steady rain…plus…for the first time EVER…i am seriously changing how i eat…not dieting…but really changing to healthier eating habits…

needless to say…that i will NOT be going under the knife…

for those that do…i ain’t mad at you…but i’ve just re-thought it for me…

my reasons for considering were all about SELF ESTEEM and BODY IMAGE…and solely FOR ME…not because of anybody else’s comments or input…truth be told…i am OFTEN told that i don’t need to lose a pound…it was about getting back the body that i had at 26 and that i let go due to inattention, laziness and complacency…didn’t know how FINE i was back then, alas…she sighs

and as far as natural beauty…i really don’t think that exists anymore because due to the proliferation of the media in america, we have become an EXTREMELY visual society…what was once natural is now UNnatural…

and i could go on…

Good Morning ALL,

Yes, I also thought 2CPTG was back yesterday, via PlayersUnion but refrained from commenting. But ALMOST posted ‘Welcome Back, 2’. LOL (But since I have been wrong with him a few times too many….)

anyway, I personally do not like the concept of plastic surgery, for non-accident(masectomy, etc) reconstructive needs. However to each their own, I suppose the woman might have a point about genetically-produced ‘ugly’ kids. Sounds kinda superficial but since that pretty common, oh, never mind. LOL

Now the woman going to basically disfigure herself for a 3-month-long boyfriend. DANG! I have felt more than one set of fakies, and do not like them, regardless of the pertness of look. And like those A/B-cups anyway, so.

Also the braces thing, I was raised in a household(my Dad) who thought people should spend their money improving the world, not getting braces for every kid, needed or not. But then my boss announced recently all his kids would be getting braces, just because he had braces when he was a kid. (the new company now offers dental, something we never had here). Anyway, I thought it was all superficial, but was not surprised. LOL

I don’t think I would be bothered if my mate some work done but if we were in a serious relationship and planing to get married I would like to to know it had been done. I would definitely be concerned about my mate looks because it what keeps me attracted to her. Not saying it all about looks but let’s be real the physical has to be there to substain the relationship. As far as asking my mate to alter her appearance with sugery to make me happy…..that’s selfish now if she wanted to do it for herself thats different. Sugery in on the incline because the world has become shallow, hardcore or whatever you want to call it. It seems we strive for the exotic, model or foreign look…check out the videos…perfect example I think surgery helps with self esteem more than anything.

Sjea Last night I hit a wall with my weight and I am so frustrated and am really ready to get this weight off. Your post this morning was so inspirational to me and I want to thank you. It is a lifestyle change and I’m so ready to begin my new life. I have been going to the gym twice a week doing a Cardio Fusion class in Stone Mountain, but it’s gonna take more than twice a week exercising to get to where I want to be. Anyway, thanks again! Any helpful hints would be appreciated!

Morning all!

In my humble opinion, liposuction and some botox is alright in my book. Anything that changes your natural face or body structure is where I draw the line. That means I don’t care for my mate to have a nose job, whatever they do to the chin, veneers on the grill, breast implants (lift is ok), or any other type of implant.

If she had it done before I met her, I’d probably make a concession because I can’t change the past.

That’s great Sjea…. Now if only I could get my lazy butt up in the morning…

As far as unnatural beauty is concerned, I am not a real fan of it, but everybody has to do what they think is best for them. I had never thought about it before but I guess some of my beauty is unnatural. I had braces for many years now I have a great set of teeth. I am with you on the teeth thing Tazz that’s one of the first things I notice on a man…. well actually it’s teeth, lips, and nails….. but my braces were not really for cosmetic reasons although the results were, I had some jaw alignment problems, which never troubled me, but my dentist thought it eventually would. I have thought about some lipo before, but that was out of pure laziness. I guess if I worked out more and ate less I could get close to if not the same results. I used to be unbeweavable and had nails for days. I have since cut all my hair off and have allowed my real nails to grow. I think make-up can be a bit unnatural at some point too. I have tons of make-up but I don’t look like a clown when I wear it. I use it to accentuate not to re-make…. if you know what I mean.

This is such a shallow and superficial culture. And I am considering plastic surgery and liposuction! Being a little past 60, I cannot stand the way my body has changed in the past five years. Everything droops now, from jawline to eyelids to boobs. All my fat goes to my stomach and suddenly, after years of being slim, I look like a little fat grandmother. I can’t stand it. I would never take off my clothes in front of anyone again!

Hey mama Mia Wow I knew today was going to be a good day.

I didn’t finish commenting on my last post……. I think plastic surgery in on the increase because it’s more affordable, society has become more shallow, and we don’t teach our children to love themselves we are so fixed on correcting everything that we think is a flaw, when we could all probably agree that many of our flaws are perceived as a source of beauty to others. There are many things that I didn’t appreciate about myself when I was younger I wasn’t taught to embrace and love them I was told to change them, don’t get me wrong change is good, but I had to ask myself if I change these things will I feel better and the answer was a shocking NO.

You see I have the cutest little nose, and a dimple in one cheek, a childish grin, and narrow feet, booty and hips that can’t be beat…. sorry about that, but you get what I am saying. Those were my flaws and are now my greatest assets.

I think it is all a self-esteem issue. I was flipping channels the other night and came across larry king and a guy was on there that had done $250,000 worth of plastic surgery and he was ALMOST done. Pretty crazy to me. I have always been attracted to natural beauty and women that are pretty without even any make-up. I don’t even like hair extensions or fake nails. I like the girl how the good lord made them and to me I like it when women work with that. Otherwise to me you’re kinda taking away something about yourself that makes you special. People that get plastic surgery just look so plasticky(?) especially when they get older.

@Tazzee - nah shorty don’t believe the hype there are still some bruhs out here that appreciate (actually require) the natural beauty. Wouldn’t have married anything less than a natural beauty. Wifey wears very little makeup, no weave, no fake nails, eyelashes, whatever babygirl is all natural homegrown southern belle that is off the chain. “LOVE YOU BABY!”
I hate weave, don’t like braids, just about fake anything, and for those years I lived down in the MIA - you were just waiting for people to just start melting for all of the plastic walking around in 100 degree heat. Now if she has had kids(and nursed), MAYBE a different story(if she initiates), but since that also rather natural…. Like I said, I do not like them.

I think it is hypocritical to “hate weave” because it’s not natural, especially for black women who relax their hair. That hair ain’t naturally coming straight, you are ADDING something to make it that way. So why dislike adding hair? Isn’t that the same thing? White women use extensions all the time too, especially celebrities. Jessica Simpson, Pamela Anderson, and many other women that men drool over have all worn extensions in their hair.

Hello all. IMHO, I think plastic/cosmetic surgery should be covered by insurance in the case of disfigurment or birth defects (cleft palette, etc.). If someone wants to have surgery performed for their own self esteem, that is their decision. If they have it performed to please someone else, to me that is a mental weakness and maybe the inside needs work more than the outside. SSC has it right. There is so much you can do to improve your attitude towards yourself that doesn’t cost a penny. Walking/running is such a relaxing release that allows you to spend time with and to get to know yourself. That is one of the few times I have alone to myself during the day and I cherish it. Paraphrasing my entry from the other day, if you are happy with yourself, you’re going to be beautiful to everyone who matters. To base it on having children is just wrong. Some people just aren’t meant to have kids and there is nothing wrong in the world with that. The trick is to knowing whether or not you should before you do. You all have a great day! Hi Mia! Been to Bella Ferrara and scarfed down any of those canollis for me yet?

On the flip side of all this, a couple of years ago Mase’s brother (who was/is a very handsome guy) was in a fire and got burned pretty bad. One side of his face had to have skin graphs. At the time of the fire he was engaged to this rather attractive woman. After he had gotten a lot better, but still had the permanent scarring, even though his girlfriend was still around he questioned the fact of her still wanting to marry. She still married him and they have a beautiful baby girl now. Despite the looks that they get from people, she loves this man for who he is.

Plastic surgery can be a blessing for some people with horrible disfigurements, so I’d say it can be good. However, I do have a few PS dislikes: When folks get like the sawed down noses where the nostrals are shaved down like Latoya Jackson’s.

Another aspect that I think is a waste are breast jobs. Now dont get me wrong, some of those joints do a good job and can be very appealing but I’ve cant stand the hard rock like ones that have no “slosh” sway or hang to them, too unatural. Sometimes small is better than having two big ol hard lumps, ya know?

Oh and another thing, those dudes that get all that work done and then come out looking better than some women (and don’t pretend you haven’t seen them either). Now that’s a case for being p** about not knowing about a PS.

Greetings this morning to all.

If she is really that displeased as to what he looked like when he was younger and afraid for what her kids are going to look like. She needs to do what she feels is best. But from my standpoint its a very shallow thing to do. Maybe she needs to have a little faith in what the man above can do. I don’t think anyone likes everything about what they see in the mirror. Beauty is in the hands of the beholder. AS you know some of the most beautiful people can act up in a way and become very ugly. Ones true beauty is from within. But to do cosmetic surgery for someone else is taking it a little far. If I wanted to change it for self to make self feel better. Then that is totally different its a little extreme if someone else approached me about it.

In some ways maybe we are catching up to other countries. For instance Japan/Thai Airlines has you send in a whole photo shoot package before even interviewing you, then you have to maintain a certain weight or you are fired.

I guess this is why online dating became so popular. You can get to know the personality of a person before shunning them for their looks. I see these eharmony commercials and wander how real is that? I know on most sites now you can post a picture, but has anyone on here ever used online dating and liked a person just talking over the phone, but changed your mind when you saw them in person?

@DK - actually THE ROCK had it done - said he just couldn’t get rid of those love handles so he got’em sucked out

but you can actually buy - fake pecs, fake six pack the whole nine yards - you should see the commercials that used to run in Miami - yeah even fake calves

By db

I didn’t say fake muscles or anything like that, I just said lipo. Here’s my situation… I’m a fitness buff; I lift and do cardio 4 times a week and I also eat right. Even when I played ball back in college and trained every day of the week; even then, I’ve always had issues with my love handles. All I need is a little fat slurp and my ish would rival LL cool J (he had lipo as well; so don’t believe the hype). Plus I’m about to become a certified personal trainer by the end of this year, so I want my ish to be perfect (free advertisement). and yes…i have changed my mind about a person once i met them in person…but not because of their looks or lack thereof…but because of the chemistry…if it’s not a love connection…it’s just not a love connection…

Wow, I feel sorry for guys. It’s kind of interesting how men are always so cautious of what they do as not to appear gay, or ambiguously gay. That sounds like a burden. I wouldn’t give a ratzz azz what another person thought about my sexual preference, but then again, being lesbian and bi-sexual doesn’t make people recoil as much.

I have no problems with a man getting lipo because he’s a man, but what would we hold onto. The thought of fake muscles scare me and it seems like they would hurt especially in the butt and calves. You have to do what works for you and makes you feel good. I wouldn’t worry about the Queer Eye stuff. Personal Training is a great path to pursue…. your body is your best advertisement and although I have seen personal trainers that are overweight it’s nothing better than being whipped into shape by a body you hope to someday have.

Great topic Diva…

Scorned, I’ve definitely been disappointed after meeting somebody I thought I was going to be into - of course that is because the picture he put up was YEARS old and looked absolutely nothing like him! forget plastic surgery - I think some of the guys on these sites subscribe to the “any flaw can be fixed by Photoshop” school of medicine.

Lipo on men, hmmmmm never thought it thru. “Tire in the middle” and love handles can be handed down thur generations and if its for the sake of making the whole packaged look better. Then do you DB, now if its from the couch potatoe that is to lazy to hit the gym I don’t empathize with.

db - I’m with you on the fitness buff thing - didn’t want to do the physical trainer thing though my little brother does it up in Brooklyn. I don’t mind training you if I know you and you are just working out with me - but just taking people I don’t know through the paces I just can’t do.

db - I don’t care if a man gets lipo - but as a personal trainer, don’t you think that would be false advertising? Or would you wait until you’d been training someone for years and they got rid of everything but the love handles to tell them you had lipo.

BTW - My workout was great! I like this whole not working thing. Dang only 6 more days of it :(

That’s understandable sJea because if the chemistry isn’t there you can look like an Adonis it’s just not going to work.

@DK those little imperfections make you, right. My husband says the same thing. In exactly 2 years and 2 months I will be 40 and a couple of weeks ago I was looking in the mirror and noticed my first laugh line. While standing there trying to plan the demise of this unsightly critter (yes the shallow part of me), Mase askes what are you looking at. When I pointed it out to him he says that’s just the more mature, wiser, remarkable you shining through. Even though we was just trying to get his morning feel on, LOL, I still understood what he was saying.

Isn’t that false advertising as a personal trainer? You’re saying that if a person works out really hard and eats right etc then they can have your body, too, but are you going to tell them that it entailed having surgery in the end anyway?

I’m against many of these invasive surgeries that are done for vanity for a couple of reasons. 1) As a society it distorts our concept of beauty and that is not the legacy I would want to leave for our children. 2) It can have serious side effects that can affect the health/quality of life of the patient. 3) It may look great today, but many people who have work done look like picasso paintings later in life. 4) If the patient is not careful with maintenance then the very area that was “fixed” can become the ugliest part of the person. For example, if you have lipo on your hips then you will not gain weight there again because the fat cells were removed. You will still gain the same amount of weight if you don’t maintain it carefully, but it will no longer be evenly distributed and your body can look and feel VERY distorted.

It is none of my business if someone does decide to have work done, but I don’t think I would be interested in someone who is under 40 and already had extensive work done. I would be really scared to see them at 50.

Mark I sometimes take supplements, but nothing spectacular. Of course I always take my multivitamins in the morning. After my workouts, I’ll have a protein shake w/ creatine. That’s it! I’m not into fat burners, or too many lab created substances that you can get on your own by having a good diet.

Tazzee: I wouldn’t consider it false advertisment because if that was the case, any woman who wears weave, makeup, etc. are falsely advertising themselves on a daily basis. Like I said, my body is very fit other than that one little trouble area. H3ll, if anybody asked if I had lipo, I wouldn’t lie to them; I tell them the reason why. Genetics are a bia bia.

fitness facts - out of the latest edition of Men’s Health

Men with flat stomachs are:

50% less likely to develop heart disease 16% less likely to die of a first heart attack. (I guess on the 2nd one all bets are off) 50% less likely to have erectile dysfunction 70% less likely to develop high blood pressure. 35% less likely to develop kidney cancer 90% less likely to suffer from gallstones 14% less likely to develop osteoarthritis 19% less likely to die in a car crash (don’t know how they got that one but I’ll take it)

db…makeup is false advertising???

quit playin’

yes…heavy theatrical, photoshoot makeup on a daily basis may be a bit extreme…but the amount of makeup most everyday chicks wear can hardly be considered false advertising…

however…surgically altering your body shape in a career field that is supposed to be about naturally shaping your body is altogether different…it means that you…in effect…couldn’t do for yourself what you are charging other people to do…it’s like you’re making promises that you can’t keep…IF…you’re selling your specific body image…

now…if what you’re selling is fitness education and improved nutrition and eating habits it’s a bit different…

and now that all that is said…if you want the lipo…get the lipo…

just no that…ethically…you’ll fall into the gray area…

@db - yo if you want to get lipo for your own personal reasons knock yourself out - but as a PT I probably wouldn’t share it unless I knew the client was in the right mindset to handle the info - cause some will be like - so why am I payin you when I can spend this money gettin lipo myself.

unless you plan on strippin and give’em the pose down to attact clients I wouldn’t worry about the lipo before you get started man

Sup peoples? Long time no blog. Cosmetic surgery is on the rise and as a result, mishaps and malpractice litigation has risen as well. I personally have thought about it because I was born with Poland’s Syndrome. This is a condition where I was born without a pectoral muscle on my left side. It has been my Achilles heel while I played football b/c it limited my upper body strength to less than 50% and the look cosmetically is less than desirable. Getting plastic surgery to get a pectoral implant has crossed my mind on many occasions and I will more than likely go through with the procedure within the next couple of years. On the case of the young lady being asked to do it by a newly aquired boyfriend is unacceptable. Eventhough he is paying for her procedure she should do what she feels is best for her. The basic premise her is that you do not or should not let any EVER dictate how to run your life and more importantly what you need to do to your own d#mn body. As mentioned in the latter, I will be making the decision, no one else. All of those who know about it continually tell me that there is nothing wrong, but it being that it is on my body, It is painfuilly obvious and needs to be corrected.

I hope all of you ladies, and fellas never have to go through this kind of surgery. I may be in contradiction because I believe that you were born a certain way, more so physically and you really should try to change that. Obviously if you are obese and you want to loose weight and tone up, that is a different story, but the addition of unnatural “parts to your body was not the intention of the creator, despite Him giving us the ability to create such technology…

sjea & “thelaw*: I think ya’ll got the wrong meaning from my comment… I *didn’t say that I believed that it was false advertisement; I said that if you think lipo is false advertising, you’d have to group makeup, weave, and forth into the same group. For the record, I don’t think it’s false advertising at all. I see all of it as enhancing what you already have and nothing more.

I think the proliferation of obvious cosmetic surgery in Hollywood has had a big influence on people. On the other hand, European stars don’t ALL have their teeth capped like Americans do… what’s up with that? Is all this cosmetic froo-froo an American thing?

I’ve never had any cosmetic surgery, taken supplements or anything like that, and I’d never encourage my girl to do anything like that. That’s actually a little shocking to me, that a new boyfriend would even suggest it. Not a lot of class, IMHO.

I’ve always been athletic, work out, watch my diet. I can tell what a difference it makes by comparing myself to my brothers, who’ve never played sports or exercised — BIG difference! I think for improved health in later years, participation in sports at an early age is key. Plus, it just feels good to be in shape.

Cute picture Diva - I’m glad they finally got it up.

db - on the false advertising. If a lady was doing a commercial about her smooth clear skin and she had on make-up, then yes its false advertising. If a woman is doing an advertisement on some type of hair-gro product and she has a weave, then its false advertising. And if you are trying to get lipo before becoming a personal trainer - then its false advertising. You said the following ‘Plus I’m about to become a certified personal trainer by the end of this year, so I want my ish to be perfect (free advertisement).’ You are advertising fake perfection.

I know when I was looking for a personal trainer - I wanted a woman that had the type of body I wanted to have. While I realize genetics plays a big part in the ultimate result - I would not use a trainer that got that body from lipo, or any other surgery.

With that said - I was all for you getting lipo until you said your body would be free advertisement for your personal training career.

I understand your opinion; that’s why I asked ya’ll. I wanted to know what other people thought it. On the real, there is a slim possibility that I’ll actually get lipo, but it has crossed my mind many times. Once thing I do want to say is, i’m not transforming my body by lipo in anyway. I will look exactly the same besides one small target area. Just put it this way; when I played ball in college, I had a body fat percentage that hovered around 4%-5%. That’s approaching unhealthy levels… My skin was similar to a bodybuilder’s transparency on a regular basis. Even though my body fat percentage was low, I still had love handles. There is NOTHING that I can do about it otherwise, and I wouldn’t want my clients to think that I don’t live the healthy lifestyle simply because of my genetics. That’s all.

What’s up, People.

I absolutely agree with NoStress 100%. There’s nothing like natural beauty. I like to live as much of a carefree and stressfree life as possible. Buying hair, nails, makeup, etc is too much work and maintenance for me. Those long french tip nails just don’t look good to me.

Putting on all that extra stuff limits my activities. You don’t want to do this or you’ll break a nail, you don’t want to do that or you’ll sweat out your hair, if you put on makeup you have to take it off before going to the gym and take extra care of your skin. (I’ve actually seen women at the gym in full makeup!!)

Kudos to you SSC for deciding against the lypo. I think the only people who should consider it are a small few who are morbidly obese and have tried other alternatives.

By Tazzee

February 2, 2006 03:59 PM | Link to this

Thats the thing db I think you’ll be a better witness to your clients if you have those little love handles. They’ll be able to relate and realize that yes, you can do everything right but don’t expect miracles because genetics plays a big part.

Perhaps its just me, but I relate better to people that don’t portray perfection.

Try that first.
