Dating with the stars
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Last week, I was skimming through the NY Daily News gossip column (gotta keep up with my celebrity news!) when much to my surprise, the very distinctive name of a friend of mine from high school stopped me in my tracks. She’s a budding actress who had a part in a film playing at the Tribeca Film Festival, and — according to the item — it seems she left the party for the film’s premiere with a high-profile (and very cute!) TV and movie star.
I have another friend who has had an on-again-off-again dalliance with a hot young actor who is currently starring on a hit TV series.
My initial response, of course, is “Why can’t this happen to me!” But these type of celebrity-commoner matchups aren’t as uncommon as it may seem. While some A-listers use their advantages to land equally high-profile partners (ie, Brangelina), others prefer to date outside the limelight. Think of Big Boi’s wife Sherlita Patterson; Julia Roberts’ hubby, cameraman Danny Moder; or Mel Gibson’s wife since 1980, Robyn (bless her heart). Chris O’Donnell is married to an elementary school teacher whom he met in college, and they have four children. Keri Russell. Nicolas Cage. The list goes on and on.
I recently read an article in the New York Times about just this phenomenon, in fact, profiling a matchmaking service that aims to help celebrities who are tired of the high demands of dating other celebrities find their match among everyday people. I wonder if this service would like to offer me a trial membership?
Would you want to date a celebrity? I know this may seem like a simple, easy question with the answer being “of course,” but think of all the additional stresses it could bring to the relationship — media attention and constant scrutiny, fending off groupies, a difficult schedule. Paparazzi harassment has been blamed in part for the recent breakup of “normal person” Kate Middleton and Prince William. Considering all the pros and cons, what would you do if the opportunity presented itself?
Or would it depend on the celebrity? ;)
I have a friend whose current boyfriend dated a fairly well-known actress in the past. Would you be able to date someone who had dated a celeb, or would you be too intimidated?
Do you think celeb-celeb or celeb-nonceleb couples are more likely to last? Why?

Hey All
Honestly, I would probably breifly date a celebrity just to see how it is. However, I just don’t think i would want to date one on a long term basis. Of course if i dated a celeb and we were made for each other that would be one thing. But dating in the normal world is already hard, let alone dealing with not having privacy, always having to deal with rumors, competing for their attention and not getting lost in their world. The celebrity world is definitely of a different universe that takes much work and dedication. I also would probably have a really hard time trusting a male celeb because the stigma is that they all cheat. Then there’s the deal with having to constantly hear about it in the tabloids, news, and entertainment shows. Not to mention LL Cool J was the only celeb I can think of i’d ever want to date and he’s already married

I think the biggest issue is lifestyle, that affects compatability. The everyday vs. star lifestyle is too different to find a consistent common ground. Yeah, things will be perfect when your “star” has getaway time. But when they have to work those other 8-11 months out of the year, things won’t be as smooth.
Lifestyles even get in the way when you have one partner that works out regularly, and the other doesn’t. Something/someone will have to give.

It would definitely depend on the man, our mutual attraction and interests. At the end of the day, celebs are just regular folks too….okay with more money and public exposure. lol

I mostly have a thing for athletes. And I think they have a worst reputation than celebs. Celeb-celeb or celeb-nonceleb, relationships are hard period and I dont think it matters what the combo is, it’s either gonna work or it aint. Heck only 1/2 of nonceleb couples work.

On topic Like Elizabeth said, if I were to date a celebrity I would prefer one that isnt in the limelight so much. One that doesnt mind keeping things personal as much as possible. Now I would love to get close to Larenz Tate, Carmelo Anthony, or Idris Elba…(sigh)…but its not something I strive for. If it happens, it happens…

Good morning all-
If I dated someone who happend to be a celebrity it may be cool. However, one of the main considerations with that kind of relationship is availability. Celebs work alot…so that 1:1 time may be limited. If I’m working 9-5 and he’s gone a large percentage of the time building and maintaining our special friendship would be more challenging.
*So, *
If Jensen Atwood or Tank or Idris Elba calls, T-Mango will answer…(lol)

Morning, All!
Personally, I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy the thrill in the short term, but if feelings got strong, I think I would get real tired real quick of not having them available to me all the time. Dating a celebrity is like having a long distance relationship because they travel so much for work.

Good Morning All Musing All I can do is laugh at you this morning. That’s so funny and true at the same time. Mo said it right. That walk and smile will make a sane woman crazy.
On topic, it would be difficult because you would need to be at a certain level emotionally as well as financially. Financially, so when the person is working you can reciprocate with the long-distance visits and things of that nature. Emotionally because there is always someone who is willing to do any underhanded thing to steal your man. Celebrity or no celebrity. It maybe another actress trying to come up in the game or a groupie. You never know. It’s up to that celebrity to provide certain securities or boundaries to let you know where you stand with them in the relationship.

My God no! Someone mentioned earlier that people are too egocentric; celebrities are off the chain. I pray to God every night that my wife and I live long and healthy lives until we die.
Would you date a woman who puts clownish colors, perms, yellow, and red, gold, blond, etc., in their hair? Would you date an earring wearing man? It’s bad enough with an earring in one ear; some have earrings in both. Obviously, these people have serious mental issues which need to be addressed.
Presidential candidate Barak Obama had the opportunity to address the issue. He chose to focus his attention on litter in the streets. This is a reflection of the conditioned cowardice seen in most African Americans.
There is no way I would date a person with that kind of disposition; celebrities or otherwise. They are one and the same.

Charles I don’t view his reponse as conditioned cowardice. I view his lack of response as recognizing that he doesn’t have to stoop to degrading anyone. What makes some people ‘special’ is their eccentricity. Most very creative people are a little off because that’s how their minds work and they view the world differently. Different is good sometimes.

I need a big hand clap for Atl Lady I was just about to comment on that “rude” post from Charles. I think everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but come on now. Do we really have to offend to make a point? People are unique and special in their own way, and actually I find a small diamond earing quite sexy on a man! And I know I’m not on the the list to be considered a person with a mental defect. Next time, remove foot from mouth before speaking, it may prove to help your post!

Mmmm, I like seeing Idris Elba’s name come up so much — his hotness is a frequent topic of conversation among me and some of my friends/coworkers who are also fans of The Wire!
SWMarietta, there are plenty of celebrities who live in Atlanta. Tons of musicians, plenty of actors — I would consider people like Outkast, Jane Fonda and Elton John, for example, to be just as high-profile as any other celebs! Plus, you never know where you might find yourself moving to, or on vacation smile

Hello Everyone
Musing, LOLO
I briefly dated a celeb. I was younger and had no real expectations for a long term relationship at that time. When you become involved with an individual on the public circuit, you have to deal with the issue of spending/not spending time with each other because of travel schedules, constantly being around so many different people, etc. It is just too much.

Why alienate any group when you can talk about general topics like litter? I think the conditined cowardice is you coming on hear with those weak a* comments. Just another white boy whose scared of his shadow. We all apologize for the 1 brother that took your gf in high school or wupped your a* real good. While the ‘08 Presidential field is still wide open, in spite of media pundit speculation based on fund raising, I don’t think Obama stands a chance. That’s a good thing though, he should complete at least one term as a nationally elected official before stepping up to to the Presidency. He’s not ready yet. Obama in ‘16.

Most people in Atlanta act like superstars anyway. This city just gives off a celebrity like vibe to me, and to be honest I see many celebrity’s in Atlanta. When I graduated high school in 1984, a girlfriend and I went to Los Angeles for the summer before we went to college. We both worked as secretaries for a law office and would go out partying at night. One night, I met Charlie Sheen. He was so cute and fun to be around. We “dated” for about a month. He was exciting to be with, always wanting to go out and have a good time. He spent money on me and my girlfriend. It was fun and I’m glad I did it. I wasn’t in love with him or anything like that. It was just a brief fling that I remember fondling. I recommend dating a celebrity if you want to. It is exciting to be around them and their entourage. I even had my picture taken by paparazzi with Charlie and it was in Star magazine. I am married now with children and love my life. No regrets on dating a celebrity briefly.

Some people think that I am offending someone to make a point. Why be offended by the truth? The truth of God is always more taxing, offensive, and challenging than the partial truth which people understands.
You all should see me as your fortunate friend. Enemies are attempting to condition your brain to consider only fantasy, illusion.
White people should have compassion on the lady and not exploit her weaknesses.

As far as celeb relationships working or not, I don’t think they are any less capable of going long term than regular relationship. We just hear about their problems.
The biggest difference when it comes to cheating is that celebrities have more opportunities to do so. Most of us would do the same in similar circumstances.

On topic: Well, I agree with the poster that said “do it big”… so, if I had to date a celebrity, it would be my man… Lawd have mercy … LLCOOLJ … Would a relationship with him work in the real world? probably not… I can fight off maybe one or two women, but thousands??? I don’t think so! lololol

Slim I don’t think Charles is coming back. I’m sure he’d like to save the world but he needs to save his own pathetic a*. LOL
Demi ROFLMAO I had to read that anime chit twice. That is hilarious. Your a sick dude.
I can’t believe I’m going to say this but it should be Clinton/Obama. She is definitely the more experienced of the 2 and has the biggest balls.
Fellas, can you imagine having a chick thats 100% down for you and you have to go home and tell her that you got some chickenhead pregnant or you have AIDS or some STD? I do not want to have that conversation.
NCgirl Yaphet Kotto? What have you been watching? BTW, I used to have a jones for NC girls. I don’t know what they put in your water up there but I can direct them to the Atlanta water supply if they need directions. They grow em real nice up that way.

The biggest difference when it comes to cheating is that celebrities have more opportunities to do so. Most of us would do the same in similar circumstances-lovlyliz
Girl, speak for urself. In short that means u are predesposed to cheating!!

Demi it’s no different, than your cousin having a baby by your man Still gross as h3ll. Uggg!
Raqi I would just assume the fact the people are always up in your business and things live well on after the fact in the media, that a celeb would be a little smarter than that given the circumstances. But i guess its like that tv show on CW, (use to be UPN) The Game. Did anyone watch that?
Lady J I think that huge planet on her finger might have had something to do with it. lol The most you could get with a non-celeb for cheating is some flowers, a lot of begging, and dinner. lol

Ladies If you were involved with, lets say a famous athlete, Would you feel okay with your SO cheating and pretty much expect it He!! No, not OK with that, or would you be more like Doug Christie’s Wife Nope. She’s like a parole officer.
If you have to police your SO, then there is no trust and insecurity on your part. Now, true… the groupies and other vultures are everywhere. However, if things are cool at the house and the man truly lives by his marital vows as bond-he may look at other merchandise, maybe even think about it at a later date, but he won’t touch it. I do believe that a man can be faithful…just depends on the man-

Good afternoon Everyone!
Fun topic! I do not think my sweetie would approve, but if I were to date a celeb, my choice would be either Delroy Lindo or James Pickens. LOL! Both are two distinguished, grown and very sexy African-American men. And that’s all I have to say about that. Said in my Forrest Gump impersonation…
Speaking of celebrities…Ladies THE CAVEMAN IS COMING!!! I guess ABC had abosolutely nothing better to fill a time slot.

Lady J I think it’s both insane whether it’s a female acting like that or a man. You will run yourself rabid trying to keep up with what someone else is doing or not doing and I don’t want to live like that. Of course i’m only outside looking in, but that would get on my nerves. Then not being able to look the opposite sex in the eye is poposterous.
Did anyone happen to see that Oprah show about the husband that had his 13 year old son video tape him abusing his wife? The video lasted for 52 minutes!
T-Mango i agree with you. I personally don’t know how those women do it. There was a special on celebrity wives/girlfriends and most of them said what stays on the road should stay on the road…but when at home everything better be about them. Then Snoops wife even said that you may have had him for one night but he’s coming home to me.

Slim I saw some of that show and to me it seemed like the other woman gave the guy what he needed. And by that I mean while his woman was very lackadaisical with his good news and accomplishments the other woman stood back, watched and fulfilled his need to be glorified.
It happens everyday.
Just making it easy for the clean-up woman
Now he was dead wrong for cheating and then lying about it. But all the man wanted was for her to show some interest and offer an “atta-boy” to his already boosted ego.

The worst I would do is ask her if she wanted to get down with me (3 some). If not I’m not straying anymore. Its to risky out there. I just heard another horror story. I’m scared straight. with all the bed jumping going on-I would not marry a celeb. Celebs change partners like they change underwear. Dating one? Maybe Sandra Bullock but I would prefer a singer. As for Obama-NO WAY! Don’t want the nation to be turned into an Islamic State and that African Church he belongs to sounds too much like Robert Mugabe. I prefer Rudy because he will bomb the Muslims off the planet and then we shall have no more wars.

Raqi Yeah you are right about the other girl. However, that is still no excuse but that does leave the door open for cleanup chick. He was wrong for discussing that over the phone in front of that singer woman anyway. That only gives her more fuel or ammo.

Slim it did not start with that phone conversation. It started when he went home to share his good fortune and she belittled it. All she had to do was support him. Not agree or even really care just verbal support. That’s all he was looking for.
I deal with a man daily that is allllways endeavoring to do something to make his life and ours better. Even when I don’t really think it’s the right thing I still support him. No one, man or woman, wants to come home everyday to somebody that constantly steals their joy.

Slim you may correct. I have only seen the show twice. But I do know this…it is not necessary for me to know that another bee is hovering around my nest for me to want to safeguard what’s mine. I am down for what’s mine even if nobody else wants it and from what I saw she was not down for him. My husband does not have to be informed that another guy is trying to get at me in order for him to pay me some attention. The character did not go there on her own she had some help.
As for me my home is my happy place and if I can’t get and give what I need there then…Houston we have a problem. But we could discuss this all day long.
But for the record there is never an acceptable reason for anyone to cheat.

I’m back everybody. We had a great lunch. Last Friday I made the mistake of telling the bloggers the gist of our conversation at lunch.
I don’t spew venom. The truth sometimes is sharp and piercing. Differences of opinions do matter. They must make sense given the situation. Example: I know the boy was home at noon. He was there with us until midnight.
It is the lawyer’s opinion that the boy stole money from the bank at two o’clock pm.
In my opinion, the boy is innocent.
It is the opinion of the lawyer that the boy is guilty.
A blogger wrote “Hmm…I wonder who would illustrate “conditioned cowardice” if Charles was in a room full of those African Americans?”
That’s the example of the conditioned cowardice I’m talking about. I am not intimidated by anyone as many of us are. God did not make me that way and prevented others from doing so. Speaking of in a room full of African Americans, I gathered a group of us together on an occasion and said, “if I catch you kissing these white folks butt like this again, you are going to kiss mine…” Some said that they were just friendly like that.
Dating anyone is a serious challenge these days especially among African American.
