First Date Hall of Fame

I was listening to Q100’s The Bert Show and they were discussing their campaign to bring back the First Date. Ok, maybe I missed something, but did the first date go away and nobody tell me?

Apparently, if you were born after 1980, chances are you haven’t experienced a true first date. Modern dating has taken us into the era of text messages and Myspace to set up first dates. Well this certainly isn’t our mother’s dating scene, now is it?

I have to admit that I am still a stickler for first dates, I suppose because I was born way before 1980! I have had some really great first dates though. If there were a first date hall of fame, I think my guys would make the list!

Let’s see, I have had a chef that cooked a fantastic meal for me on our very first date. He took the time to ask me my favorites and had my top dishes on the menu. Then there was the coach that took me to Stone Mountain park for a sunset picnic. Oh, and the investment banker that took me to this park near Lake Oconee to go canoeing.

I think it’s great that Q100 has a campaign to bring back the first date. They are giving tips for the guys all week on how to do it “old school”. Do you have any tips for people who haven’t experienced true first dates?

Are there first date ideas that would put you in the first date hall of fame?

What are a few things you should avoid on a first date?

What was your best first date ever?

Morning WLB/MLB today is my Friday…Yippee!

Are there first date ideas that would put you in the first date hall of fame? Nope, can’t say that I have any first date hall of famers.

What are a few things you should avoid on a first date? Discussing your ex way too much. Being rude or insulting your date, um…what else…need more coffee 1st

What was your best first date ever? I haven’t really had a stand out from the rest ‘first date’ that warrants me telling a great story.

Good morning bloggers. Special warm hugs and kisses to the WLB and ^5’s to the MLB. Extra specail shout outs to QC and Slim this morning.

On topic: My 1st date with my ex-wife was cool as they come. We were in Germany and we went to an amusement park. On the way the car broke down and while waiting for help we went into this like 100 yo church that was huge. We just held hands and walked around looking at all those old items in the church. We went on to have a great time at the amusement park and stayed together for 8 yrs. (By far the best 8 yrs of HER life LOL J?K)

Another 1st was a nice chick I had met at a cookout and that saturday we wwent to The Biltmore Estate. WE had a great time that day and we dated for 2 years. She came by to see me earlier this week, still friends.

A 3rd memorable date was a chick I met and had to have. She came by the house and I tied her up spanked her and we had the most incredible sex you can imagine. The relationship sucked but we could always have great sex. Maybe I should have left this one out. LOL

For the fellas, taking a woman on a road trip and away from atlanta can reveal a whole other side of her. Its almost always going to be a great time for all. This does not apply to jump off chicks, just those that may have the juice for a long run.

Off topic, I did a drive by yesterday of Wind Down Wendesday. It looked pretty cool, did anyone go and have a good time? Also, anyone doing that movie in the park thing?

Howdy Truth Your first date memory made me recall a time I went to see a male friend of mine. It wasn’t necessarily a date but anyway. On our way to go grab a bite to eat his car caught on fire!!! He lived in a small town and was well known because he was a coach there. Well a million cops came, the fire truck had to come and try to put it out, and everyone in a 2 mile radius seemed to all flock around the car fire wondering if Coach was okay. It was an exciting start to a day of hanging out. All that day I told my friends that it was like being in a stunt for a movie where we had to jump out a moving car that was on fire. LOL!

Screen on the Green Film Festival

There tends to be a good mix of films, from horror flicks, to comedies, to musicals. Vendors are on hand for light snacks and beverages, but patrons can bring their own picnics as long as they abide by park and festival rules. Low-backed chairs are allowed, but grills, umbrellas, and pets are prohibited. Movies begin at dusk, and there is usually a classic cartoon to kick things off. People usually start arriving for the best spots up front around 7:00 P.M.

May 31 — Casablanca

June 7 — Car Wash

June 14 — Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

June 21 — Funny Girl

June 28 — E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

I have had way too many first dates that were dinner and movie with too many nameless, faceless knuckleheads in my past.

Maybe it’s my old age, and maybe it’s because I’ve still got him hanging around. At any rate, on our first date, Brown and I had a 12-hour date. First, he invited me out to watch him play in a weekend softball game. Then, we went back to my apartment where we both showered and changed (seperately). After which we went to dinner at Johnny Carino’s and then he took me dancing.

I have vague recollections of other interesting first dates, but they are fading into what I will charge to early on-set something.

Sup blog!

My most memorable 1st date ended up being our only date lol! I was in ATL visiting some friends from my old neighborhood, and I was staying with the parents of one of my guy friends. He and I (along w/ his numerous siblings) grew up together, and were pretty tight as kids, but always just friends. I had a mad crush on his older brother, who thought of me as his “lil sis”. UGH! Ironically, I found out many years later that the youngest brother (with whom I went on the date) had a crush on me while I was crushing on his brother. Of course, I had no idea. LOL! When I got down there, he and I went out to dinner at this hole in the wall Mexican restaurant that had the best margaritas and salsa! Some older couple stopped by our table to comment on how good we looked together, how much fun we seemed to be having (we were laughing like complete fools), and then decided to sample some of the cheese dip we had w/ our chips and salsa. We were both cracking up that a strange couple decided to eat some of our cheese dip and thought maybe we should give them the check for our meal. We left there and drove downtown just to cruise around for a bit, and ended up at Intermezzo. We spent most of the night just catching up and reintroducing ourselves to each other, since we hadn’t seen each other in almost 8 yrs. We had planned another weekend together up here, but he cancelled at the last minute. I came back down there several months later for a job interview, and he stood me up again, after making plans to go out one night. It’s my understanding that his ex came back to town, and they got back together. I was kind of hurt b/c we’d known each other for 20+ years, and he wasn’t being honest with me. Things have never been the same between us, but it was one of the best dates I’ve ever been on. Come to think of it, we were supposed to go out the 2nd night I was there after our 1st date, but he said he was “in a meeting” and didn’t get done until late… yeah right! Anyway, thanks for the memories!

Slim - Johnny Carino’s used to have the most awesom appetizer - Italian Nachos with Chicken that I would get as my entree. However, somewhere along the line they changed the recipe for the nachos which led to my decision to cross them off my list of favorite restaurants.

I’ll second you on Carraba’s any day, but I have to divide my fave Italian restaurants between Brio and Veni Vidi Vici - awesome!!!

Ok…since it is a little slow in blogsville today…let me run this one past you.

Ahem…About 2 months ago I shared with one of my female friends of four years that I was dating someone. She’s almost 40 herself & had not dated anyone in a few years.

Nevertheless, regardless of the convo at hand, she’d always try to get me to talk details about him (which I would not do in detail). I just kept it general. In turn, she would become frustrated and give me a snide remark or two about how I was changing. Or, make rude remarks about him when she really didn’t know him or anything about him. I checked her a few times about her actions on those fronts.

Then… she started calling me 3x-4x a day. For example, she would leave me a voicemail and then leave another voicemail to confirm that I received her first message…

The calling went on for a few days and then I told her off via phone call(it contained many choice words)because I was very irritated. Then…she started crying and telling me how lonely she was. I told her that as my friend I expected her to be happy for me. But, that I could not do anything with her current state of unhappiness. Furthermore, if she did not like aspects of her life, she’d have to change them on her own and offered my support. But, I also told her about her calling and how extreme that was. She cried and apologized.

Her actions made me very uncomfortable(especially the constant calling part). I felt like she spazzed out. I did not find it normal for a friend to flip out when she finds out that you are seeing someone and happy. So, I’ve kept my distance from her since then. -

So, is this simply a case of misery loves company or Piedmont Park after dark…I think it could be a combination of both. That’s where my discomfort lies-

Thoughts?

Hey Everybody

Dang T-Mango that’s some realy drama! It’s tough too…on one hand you want to be there for someone, but craziness is not attractive in anyone- female or male. I would probably pull back to let the dust settle…then I would ask her if she wants to do something in public…a very crowded spot :-). But it boils down to how much you value the friendship…if it’s ran its course then let it go….if there’s value there…take some time and do what you can…you can’t save anyone!

By SlimOne

June 7, 2007 11:27 AM | Link to this

Slim runs up to Truth and snatches all clothes from his body while slapping him 3 times

Truth you are not going to change teams. Now bring you azz on so mama can do a quick check up to make sure it’s not too late.

T-Mango So, is this simply a case of misery loves company or Piedmont Park after dark…I think it could be a combination of both whoa! sounds like a little bit of both to me too. But i might say homegirl may have felt a little bit for you. The actions you described just sounds a little excessive for someone who is simply lonely. But what type of friendship did you and her prior to you dating this guy? (that will help figure this out) For instance, was she one of those friends that didn’t necessarily want to hang out with you if any of your other girlfriends were around?

Slim…I would describe her as very introverted. She has been out with me and my girlz (about 4 of us in the group). But, she and I never hung out together outside of group outings that much. Kept in contact via phone/email mainly. But, I noticed once I started dating my friend, she starting becoming “clingy.” Then, the drama-

Huge brown UPS truck pulls up to Mo’s building, also blasting Prince on the radio. Funny thing is Mo can’t see the driver. Finally, out jumps a 4’8” dude with taco meat showing, purple shirt sleeves rolled up but they’re still loose though. As he skips to the back of the truck, he does a spin and drops down into a half-split. He approaches Mo asking her to sign on the dotted line. He licks his fingers and ever so slightly pushes a lock of Mo’s hair behind her ear and shrieks Ecckkk! before disappearing back into the confines of the truck cab leaving behind a trail of purple exhuast smoke.

Corporate Lesson #1

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?” The crow answered: “Sure, why not.” So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story is:

To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

I want to be there to help slap Truth back to reality……stay away from Piedmont Park at night…unless the Falcons have an exhibition going on, the Dogwood Festival is there, or any other event with a multitude of people that can vouch that you were not strapped up against a tree with your pants down.

@T-Mango….I think you handled the situation in a compassionate way. Your friend seems to be attracted to you and wants more from you than you’re aware of. It is one thing to live through another person’s life experiences, but the constant calling shows signs of obsession. Best of luck to you.

Corporate Lesson #2

A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.” “Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.” The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was spotted by a farmer, who promptly shot the turkey out of the tree.

While first dates don’t represent a whole lot of fun to me, I feel like I was always a pretty good one. While not all that imaginative about it — it’s only a first date, after all — I’d take them someplace nice, spend a few bucks, be as nice to them as I could. Most commonly, they’d respond to that, and it was apparent that they were completely unused to men being nice to them. That’s always kind of a surprise to me. But, having been so nice to them, they don’t much understand how it is that I might not really be into them enough for more dates, and that can be a problem. I always felt really bad about that. Overall, I’m glad I’m not having to deal with first dates anymore — I hope I never have to have first dates anymore!

“I see that we need to up our “first date” game people. I was expecting you guys to gush about those first dates more :(“

@Wise — There’s a good reason why a lot of first dates are pretty generic: you don’t really know anything about the person you are going out with. It’s much easier to be more creative once you’ve had a chance to learn a bit about your date’s likes/dislikes, etc.

I will say, though, that a movie on a first date is the worst idea ever — you can’t get to know each other at a movie (at least not without annoying the crap out of everyone who is there to actually watch the movie).

NC I might need two of those seat covers and a Clorox wipe. lol

Oh yeah! Demi & Musing Yawl won’t believe what i saw yesterday on my way home. I seen this beat up white..looked like a hyundai maybe. But anyway, it had a bra on the front of it and it looked as if someone came up and snapped on of the bra straps because it was justa blowing in the wind but still attached to the hood of the car. Whoever was driving had to pull over in the emergency lane right before Candler Road to try to get it off. LOLOLOL! You know I slowed down to see if one of you was going to hop out. LMAO!!!!!!!!!

I’m pretty sure in the 30 years of my life, that I have made several Ladies Hall of Fame for first dates. Yet I can’t think of one woman I dated that actually impressed me enough to put on a First Date Hall of Fame for me (shrugs they all the same)(and No I am not talking about sex on the first date, for those of you who like to assume).

I have taken ladies on picnics, cooked dinner, taken them classy resturants, even brought flowers on the first date, gone to theme parks, and I have always paid. But I cannot think of one lady that wooed me enough to put one on a greatest first date list. I always get the impression that thier pressence is enough or thier looks. And thats why I’m going to stay single till I find one that really impresses me, cuase women like to be impressed, so I see no reason why a Man should not be impressed by the woman too.

See! One says a good first date is where the guy pays for it, another says low expectations are in order. It’s surprising to me that so many women experience first dates where the guy isn’t even all that nice to them. Why did the first date even take place?!

Oh and blog hugs to all the Geminis out there. I think I went back and read a post on my actual birthday where For Real said something about all the Geminis planning a party and then cancelling because we’d rather spend time with ourselves. I had to LOL because on my birthday I was on the beach by myself and it was one of the BEST birthdays I’ve had in a while.

Hey Teddy!

I know its late in the afternoon and folks are shutting down - but that makes sense with the first date. We females are quick to say ‘what you did to get me, you have to keep on doing to keep me’ so if a dude comes way out the box on the first date - he might be setting himself up for some serious expectations.

So as others have said - the key ingredient to a great first date is the person, not the surroundings.

Happy Birthday to you too Teddy! Shoot, I’m getting younger every year.
