Where everybody knows your name
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If you take a look at Peach Buzz on any given day lately, you’re sure to find that the Atlanta nightlife scene isn’t the same as it used to be. Following the closure of big-time clubs Vision and 1150, the newest word on the street is that many of the Buckhead bars are closing down, such as Tongue and Groove.
Lucky for us, new spots are constantly springing up in their place. Jermaine Dupri will be opening Studio 72 this weekend, for example. There’s a new bar in Midtown, Tap, from the folks behind One Midtown Kitchen, Two Urban Licks, Trois and Piebar.
These openings and closures can create great opportunities for us to shake up our dating life — or they can be sad losses of our favorite “fishing holes” or favorite date spots. I know that personally, I have a few standby restaurants where I like to go on dates, so I’m never stumped or full of awkward silence when my date says to me, “So, where do you want to go for dinner?” But at the same time, it can be great to try new places, break outside our comfort zone and meet new crowds of prospectives.
When it comes to your dating venues, both for meeting people to begin with and taking a date out, do you consider yourself a creature of habit, or an Atlanta adventurer? Do you have old faithful spots when it comes to restaurants, bars or clubs, or do you prefer to never repeat the same place twice?
For those who are involved with someone currently, did you meet your significant other as a “repeat offender” at a place you frequent often, or somewhere you don’t usually go?
Do you change your scoping strategies if you’re somewhere new and different?
Are there places that have been ruined for you because you and an ex used to go there all the time, and now you don’t want to go back?

Happy Hump Day
I’m actually a little bit of both. I do have some places that i know are good and will go there depending on my mood. At other times, i do get the urge for something new. I actually went to Two Urban Licks this past Saturday for the first time and I must say i enjoyed myself. I would’ve never thought that place was a restaurant nor even knew it existed. There are so many places here to go and it can be frustrating trying to find a place that you like. I like to get other folks opinion’s on places sometimes. No one wants to spend money on food they don’t like, and atmosphere they don’t like, or service they don’t like.

Happy Hump Day!!!
I’ll be lurking on this one (til the topic changes, lol) since I don’t do the club scene. I do have a few favorite restaurants though, and I’m usually by myself when I frequent them….which almost completely disproves the women travel in packs theory.

Okay, so maybe I won’t be lurking…..lol
I like trying new places too Slim, but I am very leary of some of these places because you can’t be too sure of the level of cleanliness. There are some places that look very good on the surface, but if you saw the kitchen or watch the people as they go about their duties (not washing hands, touching everything), you’d run for the door.

What up Peeps:
I took a look at yesterday’s blog and ya’ll are sick wit it.
On topic:
As for places that I frequent and new spots. I tend to do whatever comes to mind. I stay away from the brand new, usually you find a lot of “barflys” in the new spot. I am not necessarily lookin for a lady who is in tune with every new trendy hangout, I like to visit spots after the luster wears off a bit. Just my preference.

Bars again! Maaaan…
A couple years ago I figured I’d get out into the bars again by hooking up with a local bar band. We’d play American Pie, Poor Richard’s, places like that. It was a pretty good band, but everyone in the joint would be roaring drunk by the 2nd set. After that the band would be drunk too, at which point it didn’t sound that great anymore. Those guys would owe the bar money at the end of the night. So, a 4-5 hour gig in a noisy, drunken bar for typical local scale of under $100. Ya gotta be kiddin me, I had better gigs 25 years ago! I hung in for 6 or 7 months, then told them I was obviously too old for that scene. They were incredulous — ‘ya kiddin man, this is the life!’. Life in bars? Picking up bar skanks? Not for me.

Good Morning Everyone
I love trying new spots!! I love going to a restaurant where there is an upbeat atmosphere and good food. I met my current SO at Fox Sports Grill…I used to hang out at that spot EVERY Sunday during football season. Now, I never have to worry about finding a good place to dine. Last year I started a dinner club and we visited soooo many cool spots.
My favorite now for a first date would be: The Real Chow Baby….the concept is great and it makes for an interesting date. You pick your raw vegetables, meat, spices, and sauces. You take it to the grill and they’ll grill it for you and bring it to your table. You never know how it’s going to taste until you get.
It seems like alot of folks are hanging out at RARE now….I love the food….soul food tapas..
My scoping strategies are pretty much the same…set up shop somewhere and just enjoy the view where I can be viewed also.
There are NO spots that I would let an EX run me from….I probably took him there anyway!!

Morn’in All,
Jake you are right about newly open places…People won’t get up and leave the spot allowing others to sit and eat…Stop talking and get the hellz up!
Jay Two Urban Licks has a very nice atmosphere and some good food. Just don’t order the Cajun Shrimp Pot…Ughhh, unless you like to peel/remove the head of your own shrimp and get completely messy.(The only dish I hate)

Atlanta is definitely going thru a transition phase. Change is good. I always thought Buckhead came and went. Anyways, there are other cool areas such as perimeter, the highlands, or even small spots around town. @ Laney, I had a great happy hour spot that a awful date left a bad taste in my mouth. Almost every time I get there, I need 2 shots just to NOT think about her. But its summertime, meet someone new :)

Sexi You’re exactly right when it comes to cleanliness. I always try to catch Q100’s Restaurant Report when they have that health inspector on.
Jay Well first of all I have to attribute the highest percent of my ‘great time’ to the folks I was there with. We were celebrating another Gemini birthday. Anyway, the outside appearance have you inititally wondering what in the world you’re getting yourself into since it’s a huge warehouse. They have valet parking which is up to the door. Once you’re inside it just has a great atmosphere. It’s kind of dark but very live and busy inside with that modern motiff as far as lights and things. They played live music which was nice and the kitchen is actually in the middle of the place. We were in an area for larger parties which kind of in a cut but near the band. Unlike most places where you have one server for a large gathering, we were taken care of by a team of servers which was about 3 guys and 1 chick. The food was great and drinks were great. Their thing is the barrel wines that i guess come straight from the vineyards so they have a HUGE case all the way to the ceiling of keg looking barrels full of all kinds of wines. I tried the Menage Trois, which was $15 for half a thief. I must say the Calamari was pretty good. The prices were rather reasonable. I ordered the Halibut which was only about $23. We started out at the bar prior to getting seated then once seated had a round of Patron shots which, i must add seemed like double shots. During the course of the meal we had 4 bottles of Moet which they brought to us on ice at the beginning so they could chill while we waited on our food. The only thing any of us didn’t too much care for was they don’t give you ice in your glass of water. We did have to request it.

Morning all.
Cinderella My mom took me there for my 25th Birthday. VERY COOL! For those who don’t know the concept of Agatha’s…When you enter the restaurant, you are given a “role” to play in the night’s ‘theater presentation’ (all while being seated at your dinner table). There are numerous courses to the meal and the wine is freeeee flowing. This night was so memorable because I’ve never been an alcohol drinker and my household was VERY pentecostal (which I still am). So wasn’t no drinking, smoking, partying, etc. So here I am with my mom, who since we moved to GA, became a LOT more liberal in what she felt was ‘right and wrong’ according to the Bible. So here I am, GOOD and GROWN and afraid to drink. So I innocently asked my mom if I could try some of the wine, to which she was most cool with and encouraged me to try both the red and white. Well, let’s just say I learned that I have a low tolerance and I noticed after finishing HALF a glass, that I seemed to be talking a lot and that my eyes were blinking in slow motion…ha ha haha!!!! It is the FUNNIEST story that me and my mom tell now! Sanctified mom takes 25-year-old daughter our and gets her tipsied…
OK, sorry….I digressed. But at any rate, there is a narrator for the night’s “play” and when your role name is called during his narration, you stand up and say the lines on the paper you’re given. It is a TOTAL hoot! So I’d definitely recommend for y’all to try it out. The food (as much as I can remember) was good and you were GOOD and full (from food and drink!!!) by the end of the night. Boy, they come with those wine canters whenever you seem to take two sips of your drink!!!! DANG!
It was a very different and fun experience….Man…that was 8-1/2 years ago! I’m getting old!

I miss Tin Roof Cantina in the old Buckhead. That was the place. Great band, crazy-incredible women, great location.
Too bad the crime and cruisin’ killed Bhead. It sucks that a bunch of people with no money tried to cruise Bhead acting like they had money. They spent NO MONEY and caused huge headache for us residents. All I could think was “you aren’t from around here are you?” or “you lost?”.
I miss the days of a cool Spring or Fall night sitting on the patio listening to Francisco sing. I miss seeing the first Spring or Summer dresses on the girls.
I don’t miss worrying about “disrespecting” someone, involuntary groping of girlfriends, or the idiotic staring. I’m glad that’s gone back to the hood.

Morning folks!
Another day of posts that will have me missing Atlanta…
When I was there my friends and I would hit up spots in spurts - usually catching them before they were really popular. For instance we used to go to The Real Chow Baby quite frequently, then that place blew up. Harlem Bar was the spot for a little bit, but they opened right before I moved. Although I’m not a wine drinker, The Grape was a favorite of mine - they have some REALLY good chicken quesadillas. I haven’t experienced Rare yet but my friends tell me its pretty good. Rathbun’s was very good, only ate there once though.
Mind you, I’m talking about places with good food - I’ve never met a guy at any of these places.
Other places I miss; Fellini’s on Ponce, Casa Grande (good margaritas), Fox Sports Grill (the caramel apple martini is like having dessert), Thumbs Up for breakfast (preferably the East Point location) and lunch at Busy Bee. And most importantly I miss non-smoking establishments and sweet tea.

Totally off-topic What about this judge who cried over his lost pants?! He’s trying to sue the pants (HA!) off of the owners of the dry cleaners…for $54 million! IDIOT! Of course, he is representing himself.

What up Blog Said while slowly reading each and every post. Enjoying a cool summer morning.
On topic I actually like the way the new Atlanta hang out scene is vibing. It used to be that only one place was open on a particular night. Now it seems that there are about 5 to 6 places you could go every night. Two weeks ago I went to Slice and M Bar. They both were very cool, and not to expensive. Plus it was laid back, had a DJ, and no cover charge. My type of spots. Some people were gaudy with the jewelry, but everyone was doing their own thing.

Truth Interesting question. I don’t smoke, drink (except for when I went to Agatha’s…LOL!) and I am not sexually active. And my SO is the same way. So that’s how it works in my dating world. Dating someone with like faith/beliefs/values. So it works for us. Just gotta do what you gotta do to avoid compromising/tempting scenarios. It gets REAL hard at times but we are firm in our beliefs. Yeah, there were times when we ‘fell off the wagon’…LOL! But been firm and strong for a GOOOOD while now. (sigh….)
And as far as uptight…that’s debateable. Depends on who you’re asking. If that’s how you were raised and you weren’t necessarily exposed to certain things to ‘miss’ them, then it is what it is. I won’t delve further because discussions on ‘religion/spirituality’ has been known to bring out the worst in people in this group……So tread lightly…..(unless something has miraculously changed since I last chatted with the group last year…)

Slim Nothing wrong with a little eye candy to go along with the good food, but I’ve found very few single men at these places - with the exception of Fox Sports Grill.
Lady Dark LOL - during football season last year, when my girl was still on maternity leave we had a ritual where we would go to Thumbs Up on Monday mornings before she would take me to the airport. No wait at all. But then she went back to work and I started taking earlier flights…I haven’t been to Thumbs Up since last October.
The Truth I thoroughly enjoyed the eye candy in Stomp the Yard. But the HBCU alum/Greek in me didn’t like the fact that they highlighted too much of the beef between the frats. Yeah, there’s step competition but there’s so much more to the frats. But that scene where they were running up the mountain…definitely on point! Oh yeah and the other stuff was good too - but the mountain scene in the previews is what got me to want to see it on the big screen.

Truth I was just messing with you anyway. Hmm…what size do I wear…You must be planning to pick me up a few things from Atlanta Apparel Mart. Well I still have to get my clothes out of the juniors section. LOL! I haven’t been able to move up to the misses yet. So i wear about a 3/5 in juniors which is probably…shiiddd I don’t know a 28/29 in women’s??? I’m not sure on the numbers. Put it this way, size 4 in women’s is most often too big. Even though i’m small, I still have a little curve for hips. So I need a 3 at the waist but more like a 5 to get over the hip bones. hahaha! I already know if i ever pop a child out that the weight will be all in the hips. My mom is small but has hips, so i have it honest. Btw, I doubt I’d be able to tell jokes while you were getting your duo on. You’d probably kick me out if i even tried.

Ok, lets keep it real. All of “our” movies are cookie cutter. Noones had an original thought since “Roots”. I thought it was cool and ol boy could dance his azz off. I was so inspired I jumped up to hit a move or 2… then sat down after my back started hurting. LOL I could “never” move like that and I was a pretty athletic guy. Dam.
Quedog enjoy that vacation bruh. Their gonna slam you when you get back. J/K
Is Bridgetown Grill still open? They had the best bread in atlanta, after O’Charleys bread dipped in loaded potatoe soup. HMMMMMMMMMM
4th your so much better than me. I couldn’t do it. Gods honest truth if a woman stop sexing me (for whatever reason) we are done so if she never started then its just not gonna happen. Question, if you dated a guy that was cool with you abstaining but wanted to get some elsewhere is that ok or what. I mean in my thinking if your not gonna do it don’t be mad at ol girl that will. Just wondering.
Mo your posts even sound cute. LOL

What’s up Mo
What I have found out about Atlanta and I am from here, is that the new way that builders are building whole neighborhoods, with stores and shops in walking distance it is truly fun just to go to one of these locations, park and walk. Oh yeah that is another great date idea. got to write that one down.

After working at a mainstay Buckhead bar for almost five years (it was torn down last summer) all I can say is the old white people won.
A few friends and I hit Buckhead this past weekend to see a band who used to play at my work locale. Walking through Buckhead and seeing it with four/five bars/clubs left was like having a toe removed.
I do enjoy midtown but it was always nice knowing that I could go back “home” when I wanted a place to relax, hang out, and see old friends.

BUFFY, you don’t understand me. I don’t claim to have money nor do I have a bunch of money. I work hard-way too hard. I live in Bhead and pay a mortgage and outrageous taxes like everyone else. What I speak of is a group of people with the wrong priorities. They’d rather put $15k worth of rims on a $5 car instead of investing in a good reliable car to consistantly get them to work on time so they can advance in a career not a job. They’d rather spend $$$$$$$$ on grillz and bling than invest in an education to get them out of the cycle. They’d rather spend $$$$$$$$ on ridiculous clothing than nice work clothes (trust me-I’ve see their work clothes everyday).
I just don’t get it. Why live this way? It’s all about priorities. I wished $6k worth of property tax would go to fixing the roads in my neighborhood instead of paying for babies and stamps.
Hassles or not, I miss the bar days.

OldBhead Nice rebuttle(sp), if you don’t know this, we(all responsible working people) feel that way too. I wish my taxes could stay in my pocket, but those in a position to help are responsible for the less fortunate, even if the less fortunate found themselves there due to their own mistakes. It is how the system works..too bad for us. I say, teach someone how and they will do better, but many of those who have mixed up priorities have them because they have not had the benefit of real-world education, and poor schooling on top of it. Nature vs. Nurture bruh. Bad environments often times produces Bad outcomes.

I have to agreed with BHead. I work and live in Buckhead. A good friend of mine put it to me bluntly one day.
He said blacks and whites have different priorities. Blacks want a nice ride while whites want a nice house.
Granted that would be generalizing an entire race but I would say that it is more often right than many would like to believe. It’s just that many people choose not to see what’s directly in front of their faces because admitting there is a problem means admitting something about themselves.

@ Old Bhead, Gotta Agree, and Thad
I hung out in Buckhead when it first started getting popular in the early to mid nineties by way of the beer crawl, or spring fest as it was called. And I will tell you this in all honesty. The white people back then were far worse than the black people were. The main night for black people was on Sundays at Ottos, which became the bar that Ray Lewis was in. At that time I saw white men drunk and peeing in the streets and on peoples cars, I saw white men beating white women, I saw white women lying on the street drunk barely able to talk and then getting carried away by men they did not know. I saw a drunk man back his car up into a telephone pole and then try to run from the police. At that time they were telling women to walk together due to rapes. You could go into any bar bathroom and see hard drug usage. And these were the same white people who would run up $200 and $300 bar tabs.
In closing, I would like to say that the majority of the people who frequented Buckhead back then lived nowhere near that part of town. You would see tags from every part of the metro area. And also never talk about others people’s money. And talking about looking at women and grabbing them, I have a story I have to tell in another post oh no I see a civic with blue flashing lights behind me dang I am about to get a ticket.

I see too many black people driving jalopies and too many white people driving benzes to buy into the nice car vs. nice house notion. Drive out to the country and see how many new $40K pickup trucks are parked next to a trailer. Drive through the projects and see how many Escalades are parked there.
As was illustrated to me with my very first new car (in 1982, yeah Truth, I’m old enough! If I make it to my 80s I won’t mind at all, as it’s better than the alternative), feeling good about what you’re driving has a very good effect on one’s self image, especially if young, such that it will motivate one to do better in all walks of life.

When I was in germany we wore leather espadrilles (material with a rubber sole) that looked like sandals. Thats what I was referring to. And yes ladies, they were pink. Germany was much further ahead in fashion than the us. Also, this was in the 80’s.
I’m so glad the bruh’s of MLB could put together a proper reply to those stupid crackers. Had MLK chose not to turn another cheek this issue would have been resolved in the 60’s. JMO I’m like the Oakland Raiders, fear or respect, pick one.
I went to that spondivits. It is nice, and much fresher than the older spot. Great food at both locations.
ABC I got my first car in 82 also. LMAO
