She’s going the distance

As wedding season has descended upon us, my roommate and I are doing a lot of traveling right now, and we’re meeting lots of new faces in new towns, depending on where these weddings are.

As the two of us were discussing the idea of dating people we’d met at these weddings, I realized that our beliefs on long-distance dating are polar opposites. She thinks that starting a long-distance relationship is pointless, because, as they say, “long-distance relationships never work out.”

I pointed out to her, however, that the cliché statement is misleading, because in reality most relationships, whether long-distance or not, don’t work out. For a relationship to “work out,” you end up marrying that person, or at least living with them for the rest of your lives. And most of us will only marry one (or maybe two or three) person(s) in our entire lifetimes.

And although I agree that a long-distance relationship has a better chance of working if it begins while the two of you live close to each other, I think interest can be sparked enough at an initial meeting to, over time, turn into a roaring fire over hundreds of miles.

Does it take more for you to begin dating someone long-distance? Does someone you meet elsewhere have to portray more attractive qualities than someone you meet here in Atlanta? Or does the distance factor into dating decisions at all?

Have you ever casually dated someone long-distance, or does the type of relationship, by definition, imply something more serious?

Do you tend to exercise more trust in a long-distance relationship, since you spend less time with the person and have less indication of how he or she is spending time without you? Or is your level of security the same as it would be if your hubby lived in your city?

Happy Hump Day Everyone!!!

Relationships are complex enough as it is, long distance just adds more stuff to the mix. It’s not for me (BTDT!), but for those that like it…..kudos!

I see someone finally decided to let us in this morning.

Bella That’s 15 more minutes in timeout for you today. Keep it up and we’ll make it a cool 25 minutes.

A Happy Hump Day smile to the WLB and a half-azzed wave to the MLB

Does it take more for you to begin dating someone long-distance? Yes, absolutely.

Does someone you meet elsewhere have to portray more attractive qualities than someone you meet here in Atlanta? Or does the distance factor into dating decisions at all?

I wouldn’t necessarily say they’d have to have more attractive qualities BUT it would have to really be something about that person to make me consider LDD (long distance dating).

In dating, I feel being able to spend significant time getting to know each other is very important. I want to be able to do things and not have to plan a weekend to come visit, drive so many hours or fly just to hang out. It takes a lot of energy to do the LD thang and if we dont even know if we like each other that much, it would be too much time/energy wasted. A person I’m dating would have to very accesible to me.

Have you ever casually dated someone long-distance, or does the type of relationship, by definition, imply something more serious? I’ve started out newly dating someone in the same city but they moved. The LD just wasn’t what either one of us wanted to do. We tried to keep in touch but it wasn’t enough to sustain us. Trust is always less in a LD on my end. I’d be crazy to think a dude would be totally faithful to me or vice versa. Men and women have needs.

On topic I don’t do long distance relationships, period. Heck Decatur is far enough for me to have to think about someone in another state! The trust factor can’t even really be established because say you meet someone over the weekend? How do you really even determine whether or not he or she is being truthful? He or she could have a family (wife/husband and/or maybe kids) at home waiting for them! I like to take the time to get to know a person and I don’t think the phone or occassional flight out of Hartsfield/Jackson is going to get it. JMO

Daaaaaang! Grits, turkey bacon and french toast please! Wait…did Truth have any part in cooking breakfast today? You know he burns water, right?

I’ve done the LD thing. (Slim this early in the morning, LD first struck me as learning disabled! LOL!) It’s not ideal, but I suppose if both people are committed to making it work, just like in any other relationship, it can. I’d prefer my guy to live within a 30 minute radius, but sometimes that’s not possible. I have an uncle who is in a commuter marriage. Ironically, it’s his 3rd marriage, and it’s the one that seems to be working. LOL! Maybe the distance is good for some people. But, I can’t see the need to marry if you’re intentionally not going to live in the same house. LOL!

Blog Q: If you’re against LDDs, does your opinion change when you’re in a local relationship, and your SO has to move out of state for some reason? Do you try to make things work, or just let it go?

Morn’in All,

Bella I wouldn’t seriously consider dating someone I’ve only met through long distance…Any girl that I get involved with that far away would more than likely be a “jump off” chick…Now things could change if she were deciding to move where I am (actually moving, not just visiting)…But under normal conditions, the long distance chicks would only be for nookie when I’m in town.

I’m engaged to a woman I’ve been having a long distance relationship that started 2 years ago, went on hiatus for about 8 months but has been quite steady and stable for the last year. If not for an extraordinary set of circumstances, I’d not have attempted it. Unless you feel quite strongly compelled, I’d recommend against it. But, it can work, and be quite wonderful!

Good Morning Everyone!!

Thanks GA.man for the spread

I hate long distance relationships. Me and my ex of 8 years spent a year of our time apart. We made it through the year I was away, but not without battle scars. I lost trust in him and the guys nearby were looking oh so good. I used to tell him every night that I felt like I was in a prison…not free to date, but faithful to a ghost. Then I moved back to Atlanta and things weren’t the same. We broke up immediately….like the day of…but we both were happy I think to take that break. We ended up back together for probably another 3 years but I said I’ll never do LD again.

Yes, I did casually date someone in a LD relationship. A guy that I met in Chi-town. He was sooooo fine…a body builder, chocolate, and a hairstylist (now wondering if he was on the DL). But it was just for fun….we didn’t even act like we were trying to make it into something more. We visited one another a couple of times and then just became cool. I need to find his number…he was soooo fine…smile

Good morning all. Hey Mo, Mocha, MsU, Slim, GaMan, Truth, QC, newbies, lurkers..and everyone else that I may have missed.

Long distance relationships are tough. Three of my relationships have been long distance. Aside from regular relationship challenges, the distance presents another dynamic. For example, you’re constantly figuring out when and where you’re going to do things (What city?)…when you fight you can’t make up the way you’d like to until the next trip…trust level has to be very high. LD relationships also require more of a financial investment because of the travel involved to see each other.

Then, sometimes you get to the point where you want to live in the same city…you have to find jobs and put things in place to move. It’s a gamble because if things don’t work out you still have to live in place that you moved to. You have to make sure that the environment is a good for for you before you commit to do it.

So, I’m not interested in any more LDR’s at this point.Been there, done that…

Going to a meeting. Y’all be easy

abc How much distance was between you and your fiance and how often did you all see each other?

NC I’m with Mochalatte in regards to your question. If we just started seeing each other, i wouldn’t put forth that much effort to commute back and forth. He would simply be someone I’d go visit when I wanted to get away for a quick weekend and let my hair down…but nothing more than that.

Travis Your question doesn’t make sense to me. If you’re in a committed long distance relationship you wouldn’t be dating anyone else now would you? See my point? Now if you have Platonic female friends that you hang out with and your gf knows, I wouldn’t see a problem with yall hanging out…but not going out on dates. No sleepovers and no Sock-on-your-wang dances either.

Good morning Everyone, Dating in Atlanta can be classified as a LDR. Dating outside of the limits of Cobb county for me is not as beneficial b/c of the distance, heck even dating in county line can be a strain because of the demographical size of the counties. I’d rather date a man who lives within 10 miles of my city.

I was mad cuz I’m like stop being greedy you already make a lot of money dang. Then he had the nerves to think i was gonna be the one doing all the traveling to see him oh no!! Anyway it didn’t work out because of that and his insecurities. On Topic

Wow, this one is close to home. My current relationship is long distance, and in my heart I feel its worked because of the fact we don’t live close together. I do more of the travel than he does simply because I prefer to get out of NYC whenever I can. We just started off being real cool, neither was looking for anyting. Suddenly out of nowhere it evolved into just us; and my five finger rotation went out the window. You have no idea the level of trust it takes to be in a LDR esp coming from where I came from when dealing with men. Its not for everyone nor the faint at heart. But it does work out. Its just under a full year for me and Mr.Man but I can say its going way smoother than I ever imagined. There has been zero talk about either one of us moving at this point. Maybe towards the end of the year it will come up. But I’m in no rush and neither is he. It pays well to be on the same page.

Passion I feel you on that…my SO lives 50 mins away and sometimes it really feels like a long distance relationship. We see each other on the weekends for the most part now…

MsU Were you guys serious before he moved? I dated another guy..Mr.Career who took a job out of state. It really was the best move for him…he’s now an Assistant VP (and the youngest black male on that level). But we broke up right before he left because we were having trust issues. Later he told me that in his mind he thought we could do the LD for six months then he was going to ask me to marry him…..For me, that’s the only way a LD could work….when we know that there is a finite time that we will be apart.

on topic: i dated someone long distance once. we met while i was on vacation and continued to keep in touch once i returned home. it lasted for about 4 months before i realized it wasn’t my cup of tea. i like space but not that much space, lol. if i was involved w/someone who i really liked that lived in town but then moved, i would make an effort to keep things going. i wouldn’t automatically break up b/c of the distance.

SexiOne thanks for the pic, very cute…my momma thinks you’re cute too. she cant wait to meet you (notice i didnt put lol).

on topic i recently ended a long distance relationship. there were other issues but it seemed to always stem from the distance. and it wasnt the fact that we didnt trust each other, it was just frustrating that we couldnt see each other as much as we wanted to. and it didnt help that she was in between jobs, so it made it that much harder on me since i had to be the one to make the drive everytime. and if we went more than two weeks without seeing each other she would go postal, we’d get in a big fight, breakup, and get back together. and then when gas went sky high, and i found myself making life decisions at the pump, i knew something had to give. so i sat her down and gave her that talk that everyone has given at least once….its not you, its bush.

abc WOW, 950 miles! But i guess with seeing each other as frequently as you did, it had to help. Was the 8 to 9 month hiatus from the LDR, the catalyst that led to the engagement? I hope that when you two are finally under the same roof (if you aren’t already) that things are still in ‘working order’. I was in a relationship in college for at least a year when he ended up transferring back to ATL. We did the LD thing for almost another year before I was back in town. It seemed as if things fell apart when we got back in the same city. Next thing I know we broke up and he was engaged a little while after that. One of the guys that broke my heart. I was wondering what distance qualifies as long distance? I’ve heard some of you say a 50 min drive is long, some people see there SO by plane. Most of the time when I meet a new chic from the A she becomes slightly disappointed when I tell her I stay in Middle GA. But I’m a road warrior, and when you think about it a commute is a commute you just got to tough it out. Couples normally don’t speand any real QT until the weekend anyway, and if I want to see a chic through the middle of the week I’ll clear out my calendar and tough out the commute.

There is a scandal brewing in the election of the blog officials. It is advised that you be sure you know where your vote goes in the wake of these questionable elections. More at five….

I’m aiming for someone in my city, or who live close to my job. Atlanta is so darn big. I’m not into the LDD or LDR, too much effort and too expensive, although I’ve heard of some great outcome in those type of dating, it’s still not for me. I live in vinnings/smyrna and to date someone in acworth would be too long of a distance even though it’s still cobb county, especially with the price of gas these days it would take a tank for us to see each other LOL

it’s not too much dating that will be going on anyway…get to town…have sx….go out to dinner….have sx..sleep…wake up..have sx..lunch…maybe movie..have sx..drve/fly back to atl..do all over again in two weeks

What up peeps:

LDR: I’ve done it, and it was not worth the trouble. It is difficult to maintain, for a lot of the reasons that were stated prior, no need to recycle those, but there is an additional problem; the psychology of the relationship is flawed.

If you are able to maintain the relationship, that’s cool, but it rarely works when that dynamic changes. A LDR may seem to work because when you do see each other it is always good, you are so happy to be around each other that you don’t argue, you don’t see the little pieces of a person’s behavior that will drive you crazy, you are basically living in a paradox. You are so gased up to see that sweetie that you do not experience real “commitment”, the commitment it takes to have those blowout arguments, then two days later say I’m sorry and move forward. LDR’s don’t work because in most cases there is a deficit in that “building process.”

This changes when you you begin to spend the extrordinary amount of time that people in real relationships spend together, it is then that you realize that this person that you have loved from a far isn’t so great, that you really don’t like this azzhead…lol

SJ yeah, i see what you’re saying. the way most working folks schedules are though it makes it difficult to have a good balance of indoor (lol) and outdoor activities. a lot of women (including me) just don’t want to be thought of as strictly a sex partner. wanting to go out and do things as a couple is part of that. most of the times i’ve felt concerned about all cuttin’, no courtin’ (lol) is when it really was like that. otherwise, if the relationship is good and secure, it’s not a big deal to have sex four out of five times of getting together..lol. we can always go out afterwards. lol

By C tha 1

July 25, 2007 11:16 AM | Link to this

Don’t get me wrong, there has to be balance in the commute. Being from the middle of the state I can only hop my happy azz up and ride out so many times in a row. Also, there has to be a genuine connection that has serious potential to grow into something more. Alot of things have to be taken into consideration, but from my pov I would be willing to move.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that in a LDR, the only reason I would move to take the commute out of the equation and experience what SJ spoke of is that we are on the verge of doing tha damn thang. There ain’t no way, I would move if I thought a chic would start trippin because things got a little different now that I’m around more often.

I met my now fiance in Florida and I lived in Georgia. We were friends for a while, just casually chatting over email or IM. After a while, sparks happened and we realized we felt more about each other than just friends. So we started visiting one another, sometimes I’d go down there and sometimes he’d come up here. After two and a half years like that, he moved in January 1, 2007. We’ve been living together since and things haven’t changed a bit.

People warned me that doing things long distance never work, etc. etc. Then they warned me that we probably wouldn’t be compatible when we finally moved in together. Now they’ve given up on all of that and marked us as one of the few who made a long distance relationship work.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard. Really, really hard. But if you’re committed to the other person and there’s a high level of both communication and trust, you can make it happen.

Morning bloggers. Cheek kiss to the WLB and elbow smash to the MLB.

On topic: I did the long distance thing with my ex wife. I cheated more than if I was single. DON’T TRUST THE TRUTH IN LDR LMAO All the drawbacks, none of the benefits. THe only way I could do it is if you hook me up to a booty IV, I need a constant drip. I was younger then but I know thats not my thing. Its hard enough if your close.

NEWSFLASH Sec of State The Truth will be resigning his position and leaving blogsville after today. His declining business requires 100% of his time and effort and has to take priority at this point. Part time blogging is out of the question as he must go cold turkey to shake this thing. Wish him luck.

I have really enjoyed you all (Even KB) but business is business. In so many ways I feel like I know you all. I wish you all great happiness and wish Slim a lifelong supply of eveready batteries. After today I am implementing a 0 tolerance policy in regards to blogging/posting.

The Truth tearfully returns his blog vest/helmet as well as his MLB RULES AND REGULATIONS handbook to Muse but keeps his cup. (Just in case a WLB member see’s me on the street and kicks the shyt out of me) Flags at MLB HQ will be flown at half mast for the rest of the day.

Now back to your regular blogging station.

Good day bloggers…I have done the long distance thing. My ex was in college and when he used to come back home it was on and poppin’! It worked for 2 years then I decided to move here. We still kept it going…but he is now playing professional B-ball in his country (Serbia & Montenegro). That is too far for my blood. I can do a 2-3 hour flight..but when I gotta cross the Atlantic or Pacific ocean and connect in Paris…that is too much for me. He asked me to marry him but I could not see myself being that far from my husband…nor could I see myself in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and I can’t speak a word of Serbian and they may or may not speak English and of course no Spanish so I would be screwed! But as I said, it worked for a few years and probably would have continued to work if the change in continents did not come about. So to each it’s own with LDR’s. Currently I have been kicking it with a guy who lives in TX for about 3 months (yes I needed someone to help heal my heart after my last break up 3 months ago, sue me). He is coming to visit me tomorrow. I am trying to keep my celibacy streak going but I don’t know if I can do it! But he and I said that we are just going to go with the flow and see where things go. So if he is the guy for me I will not let something like a 2 and half hour flight keep us from being. If I am having such bad luck in ATL I might as well try another state. I was 2 minutes from importing one or some of my NY men to ATL. But I think I will give Mr. TX a try.

I prefer LDFF(aka long distance female friends(OR fugging friends,if u like). Its good because it gives u the option and the opportunity to hit each time u travel to their city. The trust issue is always a problem with LDR so its better to keep it on the flexible side. LDFF are also good if u like to travel because u can always plan knowing u have friends over there!

LDR = Platonic friendship. Some people classify it as dating, most don’t. If you’re not local, its not serious, just platonic.

Most people date for companionship. There is no companionship with someone who is living a few hundred miles away. Furthermore, you subject yourself to the possibility of all types of lies and secrets. Some contend that you have to have certain companionship, i.e, moral a similar ideology or otherwise. Its really difficult to know if these genuinely exist without witnessing a persons daily routine. Both men and women lie alike. Either way, I wouldn’t put too much stock in a LDR. It can turn into something serious but then again so can any other friendship.

Gorilla dating - going out (dinner, movies, concerts, park, whateva), enjoying each others company, exploring the chemistry level, getting to know each other. Now define SO for me. To me SO is your significant other, monogamous relationship. And yes, there is a lack of qualified candidates on both sides. lol

Along with that I got a little burned out and now things have got to be turned around. It has been wild hangin with you folks but duty calls.

I thank the WLB for showing me there are people out there with a heart. I had forgotten that in the struggle to “get somewhere”.

I nominate Gorilla to take my seat as SEC Of State. He’s going to be a warrior till the end. (Gaman and Musing, watch him tho, he’s getting way to cozy with some of “them”) LOL Gorilla, they will turn you with all that good food, fat booties, nice cars and air conditioned HQ’s. Stay strong bruh. (The Truth sheds a tear as he presses his face against the glass at WLB HQ looking for the tray of hot rolls with butter they pass around daily)

Musing how the hellz do I owe you for that old azz chicken strip you gave me? You should owe me for the medical bills I got after eating that ish. I had to have my stomach pumped.

Similac its true hun. Maybe we’ll meet on another blog in another place. Till then send me my picture. LOL

Afternoon folks!

Busy day for me, don’t even have time to catch up on all the comments. I will say that I am very open to a LDR. The last guy I went out with was in the process of moving to FL and traveled a lot with his job. When we first started communicating, he didn’t even come back to Houston every weekend, but then as we started to enjoy one another more - he would make an effort to get back. For me, the arrangement was perfect - I usually don’t like to hang out during the week - so just seeing one another on the weekends is fine with me. I love to travel too, so alternating weekends would work.

The only problem I foresee with an LDR is the phone time. I am not the type of person to talk to my guy on the phone every day and I might have to talk more in an LDR than if the guy lived here. So to answer one of Bella’s question - the guy would definitely have more for me to work on that.

Have a great hump day bloggers!

I’m not a regular on this blog, having been off the market and married for 25 years, but the title caught my eye, and was good for a chuckle.

For those who say that long distance relationships “never” work out, let’s just say that “never say never.” I met my husband in college when he was a senior and I was a freshman. He got a case of senioritis and wanted to get married when he graduated, I said, “no, thank you, not NOW!”. After he graduated, we were never in the same STATE for the next seven years, before we were married when I was 25.

I think a long distance relationship can work as long as both sides are realistic about the limitations and don’t cut off their local social life in sacrifice to the long-distance relationship. We both dated others casually (and sometimes not so casually :-) ), broke up a couple of times, and finally realized that we really were perfect for each other, an opinion we still share 25 years later.

My daughter is facing a long-distance relationship this fall when her boyfriend goes off to college. The odds are not in their favor, obviously, but as I pointed out to her, “relationships that do not evolve become extinct”. The relationship will have to change to make room to allow them each to grow as they need to at this time of their lives. The one thing that I keep seeing a tendency towards is the “all or nothing” attitude that seems to be so prevalent — either you are dating someone exclusively, or not at all. Dating seems to be such an exclusive activity these days, instead of the gradual getting to know a person, and being able to compare them (in real time, isntead of in remembrance) with others. Seems like it puts a lot of pressure on fledgling relationships.

I am currently in a LDR and have been for about 8 months. I do have to admit it’s REALLY hard but the time we spend together is precious. It’s not all sx. I do much of the traveling b/c I love going to NYC…it’s like a mini-vacation for me with a bonus! When I don’t travel, he does come back to the ATL to not only see me but his family/friends as well. Then there is what we have dubbed “the half and half” trip. A short 6 hour drive and there he is. Now THAT trip is COMPLETELY about sx.

He has asked me to move to NYC which I said yes but I need to wait til the Spring because of selling a house, going to school, etc. I’m excited and may not have to get a new job as my current may just transfer me :).

They can work and so far so good on our front. We talk everyday via mobile to mobile (thank you Verizon!). We love and trust each other. The communication is very open as we talk about everything down to things like I’m out of toilet paper or he needs to do dishes. It’s the small stuff, the day to day things that really help us thru each day and talking about the little stuff too. I even get emails of him drawing flowers and butterflies for me. Sickening…isn’t it…but really rather sweet.

Okay..I’ve rambled long enough…time to send HIM an email now :)

Later!

Truth… WTF bruh??? You’z my roaddog. atlien78@gmail.com for ya bruh….

ok, COMPLETELY off topic, but I just need this heard by someone, even though I’ll be crucified by many for my opinions…

…. So let me get this straight. Pitbulls are a breed that has no other purpose than ferocity, good for little more than what MV7 was allegedly using them for. Now you have one of these beasts in a residential neighborhood, and he gets loose and mauls a some little five year old girl to death. You as the “irresponsible” owner will get maybe a misdemeanor, maybe 30 days in jail IF you’ve been warned before and the judge is in a bad mood.

Now, you can take that same good for nothing breed and engage in illegal dogfighting, and you stand to get 6 years in jail and a $350,000 fine.

Now, you can be on trial for MURDER, cop an obstruction of justice plea, admitting guilt in the situation, and play out your season like nothing with the full support of your team.

Meanwhile, you are ACCUSED of dogfighting, and all of a sudden you are the worst person on the planet; Your commissioner bans you from camp, your team is ready to suspend you for 4 games, and your jersey is being burned in a bonfire at a California minor league ballpark. Nevermind you’ve spent tons of money and time helping out the local kids where you grew up and still have the respect and admiration of your elementary school teachers.

What a country. We treat dogs like children and children like crap.

I’m born n bred here. But as of this moment, and for the foreseeable future, I’m done with the Falcons. I’ll be actively rooting against them. I have little to no interest in the upcoming NFL season; ya’ll can just keep it.

Go ahead and pat yourselves on the back.

The Truth is now talking while riddled with blog bullets, except for his right arm. Thanks Slim

Gaman as funny as her falling down was you got to give that chick props. She’s like Dwayne Wade, she falls down seven times and gets up eight. All of those young chicks are getting dui after dui after dui, getting arrested time and again. While she may fall she gets back up and does her thang. I got nothing but love for her.

Wattup Blat? Nice piece you did on the pitbull thing. That things been messed up from the start.

One thing about a LDR is that it tests your belief in love … you’ll travel if you truly believe ain’t no mountain high enough, no valley low enough, no river wide enough to keep me from you. But I’ve failed easier tests than that before, and I’ve passed harder test than a simple commute to keep a good thing going.

Stop your got me ROTFLMAO.Memorial Drive please. Baby met me at Panthersville. Excuse Blatino ain’t nobody played the system like Tricky Dick bka Richard Nixon. Ray Lewis, (let me pause for a moment of silence because he is so phune and milk does a body good) ain’t got nothing on that thug who did a breaking an entry, lied, lied, lied through his teeth. Got a check, which we paid for and secret service for life, library named after him the whole 9 yards. Wrote a bestselling book and was also Time’s “Man of the Year”. don’t get me started. The black guy who discovered the crime didn’t have a pot to p** in. They gave him hell until he died penniless.

I’m in a couple of big bands, and some other small groups. The big bands play concerts and stuff around town and in small towns all over the state, mostly private parties though. There’s not that many big bands concertizing ‘round here, chances are if you see one, I’ll be in it!

No date set yet, Truth. Good luck on a real estate upswing, ‘may your pockets be heavy and your heart be light’!
