Rocking your body
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I have never been so worried about teenage women.
Forgive me if I’m way behind the curve on this one, but I just discovered the wave of thinspo videos on youtube this week. (Thinspo is a shortened version of “thinspiration,” a combination of the words thin and inspiration.) It doesn’t take but one or two videos to make you realize that many of these girls don’t want to be healthy—they want to be as anorexic as possible, and they’re encouraging each other to do so through these video montages. It’s crazy that this kind of concern about our appearances begins at such an early age.
And unfortunately, many of us grown women (and a few men!) still have body issues, even if we’ve escaped the clutches of eating disorders. And sometimes people we meet on the dating scene seem to reinforce our insecurities.
Ladies, do you ever feel like men are only looking for women who weigh under 100 lbs.? What kind of social pressures have you felt out on the dating scene? Have any of you ever felt accosted from the opposite end — people accusing you of being too skinny? What’s your ideal body type when it comes to men? And what are you willing to settle for?
Men, what’s your true ideal when it comes to the appearance of a woman? And what are you happy with, realistically? Do you feel like you meet women who won’t settle for anything less than physical perfection from a man?
Thanks to those of you who’ve sent in e-mail about the blog issues; it helps when it’s not just me complaining about it to tech support! Happy Friday!

Happy Friday all!
Ladies, do you ever feel like men are only looking for women who weigh under 100 lbs.?
Well, as a “slenda tenda,” I think slim women will always be in, but guys appreciate a woman with “some meat on her bones” much more in the south. I think different body types and images are better celebrated in the south, and that’s a good thing.
Have any of you ever felt accosted from the opposite end — people accusing you of being too skinny?
I do feel that people are more comfortable making “skinny” jokes. If the same type of jokes were made about bigger people it would be mean or cruel. Truth be told, everytime I see myself in pictures, I marvel at just how thin I am. I really have to work at keeping my weight up or I’ll just waste away. LOL Since I’ve been thin my whole life, I’m comfortable in my own skin, but I do want to make sure I stay at a healthy weight and keep the few curves I do have.
P.S. Thanks Bella for giving a shout out to the “technical issues” the blog is experiencing. Just keeping us informed will appease us, just so we know you aren’t abandoning us. :-)

Personally, I don’t think the “model look (as I call it)” is attractive at all. Since my first expperience with dating a mature woman (she was 36, I was 24), I have always admired and was a attracted to the mature woman. I loved the curves, the confidence, the experience and the conversation level. The “thin craze” exhibited in hollywood and media does nothing more than make people look emaciated and sickly. When I was 35, I dated a 50 yr. old for six months and promptly resigned myself to “I can’t keep up with her.” Presently, I am married to a beautiful 48 yr. old woman and I’m 44. When I met her, she drove me crazy with her confidence and maturity. My experiences of trying to “go with the norm” and date younger women than me just frustrated and disenchanted. They were self centered, insecure and basically had to be told when to breathe in and breathe out. Intimately, a 20 something is bringing a pocket knife to a gun fight when compared to a 40 yr. old woman. Keep your anorexics, your bulimics and the people that just stop eating when they gain 5 pounds. If I had to profile the perfect woman, she would be 42, 5’6” and 135 lbs. I thought that when I was 25 and the older I got, the older they got. That’s unfair to place that on anyone, but I’m trying to say that I wanted a WOMAN, not a GIRL.

But theres something to be said about Dave’s point, Red.
I’ve always dated older women (and loved it). Talking to someone around my own age is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. I’ve said it before on here, there’s a calmness, a security and a greater sense of self that I enjoy in dealing with older women.
Not to say young women don’t have it, some do, but those are so few and far between the norm that statistically they don’t count.
Not to mention the other side of it, older women know themselves in a way that even fewer younger women do. I don’t know whether it’s age or experience or the calm after the storms, but give me an aged single malt over a shot any day.

Morning, all. :-)
“Men, what’s your true ideal when it comes to the appearance of a woman? And what are you happy with, realistically?”
No need for me to elaborate on how I feel about the whole “physical appearance” thing. Ya’ll already know. LOL! Suffice it to say, however, she must be hygienic and carry herself in such a way that it exudes self-confidence, yes, but not so much that it comes across as her using her physical attributes to draw attention to herself.
I’m okay with someone who might be a little salubrious about herself, but I can’t stand vanity in a woman. Beauty and humility can co-exist.

On topic: A woman with good mental and physical health is a great start. I know a few women that stay sick or under pressure. Everything disrupts their system. My theory is the pressure of being alone is killing that azz.
It is a shame that folks let Hollywood determine how they should look. Without lipo, nose jobs, rib removals, azz implants, steroids and human growth hormone most of those folks wouldn’t be what they appear. Take a look at Pamela Anderson without makeup. Now I know why her hubbies all screamed fraud.
The beauty in women has never been in what the media tries to sell us anyway. The real beauty is in her spirit. What she brings to the table. Fine makeup can’t cover up a mugged up personality.
Jamo if you pop in today shoot me an email at atlred01@yahoo.com. I have something for you.
Ared what size are you anyway?
Simi for breakfast I have an assortment of danishes and rolls, omelets cooked to order, various juices and bottled water, 3 types of thinly sliced meats, french toast and waffles along with a variety of fruits. Also, for the ladies ( and some of the “softer” guys) I have a gift bag filled with varios perfumes, a card, a personalized Tiffany’s bracelet/necklace combo with matching key fob, and a dozen roses. I also have 3 massage tables set up and those services will be available until 11 am. Eat well and enjoy a day of peace.

AmazonRed, that is a big part of it, but with a mature woman, her body fills out and she has the curves. I’ve seen some mature women in my gym that have just starved themselves skinny and that doesn’t look good at all, either. Now, I don’t like women that are overweight, but a woman with curves or even what is often called a “thick” woman is SO much more attractive than the sticks and bones that we see in the media. The SI Swimsuit issue doesn’t make me glance past the cover as they just look so malnourished and pasty. Hips are a MUST! My wife sometimes says she is overweight and has a ghetto booty, but GAWD what a booty it is! She has a thin waist, but she looks like a WOMAN. Yes, age is a big factor with me, but you need to have the curves of a woman (Cougar, anyone?). The Flockheart woman from Ali McBeal was just hio hum. Angelina Jolie is a BEAUTIFUL woman, but she has just wasted away to nothing. Her arms and legs just look like a stiff wind would break her. No thank you.

To every entity there is a law. The body has a law. There is such a thing as the ideal weight. There are three ideal weights for every height based the bone structure. If you don’t know what yours should be check with your doctor. Ten pounds over the text book ideal weight is healthy and still looks good. (I have a friend that’s a doctor).
A woman’s body is supposed to have a certain corpulence of curves. Those Paris Hilton types have skewed the minds of society. It ain’t pretty. If you look back on historical art you will see what a typical woman’s body should closely resemble. Now not all of us will be so gracefully proportioned but it gives you a good idea. Yes there are some born to skinnies and some born to be plumps. But you can over do it.

on topic: i have had my times when i thought all men wanted a waif. i have been curvy my whole life. it can be challenging sometimes on the dating scene being to big to be skinny but to small to be big. let’s not even talk about buying clothes…lol. at the end of the day, i continue to work on appreciating the look and the purpose of all this body. it’s a hard job but someone has to do it…lol.
i don’t have a preference of body type with men. i just like a man who’s fit and takes care of himself. not super muscular, just good solid man weight…lol. as long as there’s not a whole lot of stomach involved, i’m cool.:)

Morning all! TGIF!
Wow Bella what an interesting topic. It’s funny that because I am not some size sub zero chick, when I meet people they always assume I am from the south (Miami). That annoys me because not every girl in NY is a walking skeleton! I am a size 8 and I work out now 2 times a day, 6 days a week to change that. If given the choice I would chose to be a size 2. I think skinny girls get approached/treated differently than the curvy girls. When you are skinny, there is really no body to look at so they look at your face first. With me, I think my azz gets the first look and then they look at my face. However, with the skinny girls I do not think they think as sexually based as they do with a curvy girl. Now…I HATE the word thick! I think it’s a horrible word! If you want to send me into a frenzy..call me thick and see if I do not go off on you! I have ended things wiht a guy for that! I see the really fats chicks calling themselves thick and I do NOT want to be in the same realm as fat. So of course I get offended. Heck, now they are calling themselves curvy and that word is being taken to the extreme. So now I just say..don’t describe my body at all. Just leave it alone. Along with all the BS I have dealt with from men…I think another reason I choose to be single is because I hate some over-sexed dude thinking because of your body you want to be treated like some sexpot who wants it all the time. Just because I have an azz does not mean I want to be groped! I have a mind and feelings…I’m not just a body!
In the age of Hollywood…I tell you, it can make you hate your body to the point of getting dressed in the dark so you don’t have to look at it. Sometimes..it’s not about what men want…it’s how you feel about you. I have a friend who is a 0 and said she would switch bodies with me..and I told her I’d switch with her.

News Alert News Alert News Alert
*Child of Houston, Brown reportedly slit wrists. Web reports have it that the 15-year-old daughter of singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown was committed to a psych ward after a recent suicide attempt. Bobbi Kristina, who was first introduced to the public as a chubby child on the Bravo TV reality show “Being Bobby Brown,” allegedly tried to slit her own wrists. The teenager had allegedly tried to attack Houston with a razor and fought with her mother because she no longer wanted to live with the singer. Recent Web photos circulating show Bobbi Kristina and her older sister in suggestive poses, holding unidentified beverages in plastic cups.

My youngest son is crazy about Raven Symone but my oldest would tease and she is fat. Well to each his own. The boy likes what the boy likes.
The said part about the anorexic syndrome is these girls are not subjecting themselves to such anguish because they are afraid a boy/man doesn’t want a girl/woman with curves, but they are doing so because they believe this is what society says is perfect. Or ideal.
I exercise four days a week. I drink plenty of water. And try to eat fairly healthy. I am not stick figure nor do I want to be. I am happy with my body. And I don’t hear my husband complaining. Well he has said that my breasts are just aight. But for the most part we both are fine with it.

Staceye - Well, I am please to report that you can stop working out to get to a size 2. If you do, you will probably STILL have azz. So you’ll still get the same attention.
Also, in terms of approach, girls who are a size 2 have to hear “I’ve always wanted to sex a girl with a model shape.”
All this to say, each size has their own unique issues. So just get to a size that you’re happy with and call it a day!

forreal i think that a nice body type for a man is semi-athletic. i know that’s a funny term. i like men in the 40 zone so i realize that they may not have their high school athlete shape from back in the day….lol. as long as he didn’t let it go all the way south, i’m cool. nice strong arms/chest are a plus but i don’t need the whole body builder physique. people like that spend a whole lot of time in the gym which means less time for me…lol. i know that sounds bratty but i’m being honest. don’t want someone who is obsessed w/their workout. how was that? enough info?:)
SJ i’ve talked to my friends about that case as well. that was some skrait BS on that lady’s part. makes it bad for women who actualize are victimized. 12:30 a.m.??? a hot shower??? come on now, sounds like a hot azz gone cold when she couldn’t get what she wanted…probably a commitment from ole boy, money or both. it’s never cool to pull the rape card….her azz needs to be in jail.

Now do something…
Thick, thin, skinny, light/dark, jiggabo/wannabe, my goodness people…
When you look at cha self in the mirror do you see flaws, yeah we all do. But for those of us that can look in the mirror and see what we like about ourselves (the smile, the hair, the curve of the trapezious muscle) live in a different world. That whole syndrome about worrying about what you look like to someone else is almost pathological. So say kcuf it and move on.
And Stace, you’re in the south, good booty down here is a tradeable commodity, like gold, silver, gas. Bet that matter of fact, you could get your gas tank filled simply by puttin on some bikin shorts, standing by the pump, pretending to look for your wallet.

Usually, the ones that “look like models” or have breast implants thnk they are doing YOU a favor by letting you go out with them. I’ll take the woman next door who keeps herself in shape naturally. I once dated a Hawaiin Tropic swimsuit girl for a few months. She was nice to have on my arm, but she thought every man would do back flips for her and the sex was about as vanilla as it gets. Like my uncle told me “No one likes a beautiful woman more than I do, but they’re so much dayum trouble!” I’m sure this goes equally for the guy with the Brad Pitt body. Great to look at, but once you take the wrapping off it’s like, “That’s IT?”

I think there are eight primary body types: 1. Skinny 2. Slim 3. Average 4. Thick 5. Thicker 6. Plump 7. Obese 8. Morbidly Obese
And of course you may hyphenate. For example I am avg-thick, 5’2 138 lbs. I agree with Staceye in regards to men seeing the rear first then the face- it is annoying because it is so much more to me. I am in the processing of shedding a few pounds so we shall see if anything changes. :)

Now when it comes to the bodies I like on men: I like my men tall…starting at 6ft. I prefer a man with a little size to him. A skinny man..he had better be really cute. But on the other hand if I ever decided to marry and have a baby (yeah right) I may marry a tall skinny man to hopefully give my baby a chance at good skinny genes! LOL But I like muscles on a man. I think that is why I was so crazy from my ex back home, 6’8/260 solid muscle! OOH wee! Flash backs are a mugg!

I don’t know how to type half of a hi-5, so I won’t try.
But, Vic, you’re half right, the sex is kinda vanilla, till you turn her out. Sex with most women can be like that until the “inner freak” is scratched and then hold on….
The other part is that a beautiful woman has insecurities too. Most women do, the choice we make as men (good vs. bad) is to exploit those insecurities for our own needs; or to try and build her up out of them. Let her know that you think the snaggletooth is sexy, etc…
But while dating my share of all stars, I can’t really say I ran into those kinds of issues, at least it never ended up that way.

Dan the symbol above the #6 is the hi-five symbol.
I personally like tall muscular men. I am a sucker for strong arms and nice teeth. If your grill is messed up so is getting to know me. I will date someone my height, but I like tall men. A six-pack would be nice, but not important but no beer guts allowed!

How about 44 yr.s old, 6’4, 215lbs., former pro tennis player, worked out 5 days a week, runs 3 miles a day. I get told I’m skinny all the time. I like the body type that I have and have no mdesire to look like a Greek Adonis, nor will I ever let myself go. I have to keep my weight down so I can move around on the court. I’ll never be rock hard muscle at 250 lbs, but people keep telling me to put on more weight.

Good Morning All,
Raqi I agree with the law about body types..everyone does not look the same(even twins) so what works for some will not work for others..it is what it is. You like what you like. My son loves Raven too..but I think he is going to have a thing for older women period. He also like Hannah Montana,Vaneesa Huggins(sp-the dark haired girl from HighSchool Musical) All three Cheetah girls and some little girl he saw at a volunteer project.
ThirdWheel Honey your problem may not be weight..but self. I dont mean self-esteem. I mean you may just not like yourself. Because I know my size has never, kept me from dating. EVER. I meet all kinds of men who like all kinds of women, short, tall, thick, thin…whateva. I have met men who told me all I check for is a pulse if she is breathing she can get it. But if you think bad about yourself, well then you are going to give off that vibe.

Gol-Getter I work out at lunch and when I get off. In the morning I have egg whites with 3 pieces of turky bacon with green tea (no sugar). mid morning sanck is a banana. Lunch is usually a turkey with mozzorella cheese light mayo on wheat. Mid aftre noon snack is an apple or a berry fruit salad (strawberries, bluebrries & blackberries) dinner is lean meat (chicken or fish) with a veggie. more berry salad before bed. I do 30-35 minutes cardio during lunch then and hour when I get home and I weight train only 2 times a week because I do not want to gain weight. I have muscualr legs so I do lots of reps with mo more than 20 lbs of weight. Oh yeah I belly dance for 2 and a half hours on Saturday and Thursday. I used to ball room dance but I no longer have time for it.

Ladies, do you ever feel like men are only looking for women who weigh under 100 lbs.? I personally think 100 lbs is wafer thin but I do think guys are looking for women who are @ 160 lbs. I’ve asked a few of my male friends and all of them have said 160 lbs is an attractive weight on a woman especially when it’s in the right place like the boobs, butt and the hips.
Have any of you ever felt accosted from the opposite end — people accusing you of being too skinny? All the time, I am a small framed woman, I’m happy with my weight and I work hard to maintain my weight to height ratio. And even though I’m 143 lbs I’m still considered overweight by my nutrionist. Go figure!
* What’s your ideal body type when it comes to men?* Forget the six pack I want him to have an eight pack! Phycially fit is the way of life.
I posted earlier, it must’ve gotten lost in blogger outer space

One great thing about this city is you can most definitely have your pick of a customized mate when it comes to height, weight, complexion, etc.
Sometimes ppl hear with a negative connotation where none was meant. Stace What are you allowing to dictate your guideline? I’ve never heard a guy call a girl ‘thick’ without admiration in his tone! True, some are in denial but it’s not always the case. I know I’m full figured and I also know I have curves. It really is possible! Clothes fit the hips, too loose at the waist, tops cut for flat chested mannequins or stocky football players… Headaches for all no matter what size when you’re shapely. And with so much variety on the market and no one size fits all mentality, just know: some dude is always gonna look at some girl as a tasty treat cuz regardless of her body type she’ll be just the type he likes. Plus, men will say they wanna try a big girl/tall girl/light skinned girl for fill in the blank reasons but it’s really just that they wanna hit… Whatever, we should all listen to Mary & Work What We Got!
Cee Hmmph, indeed! They fascinated w/ that brotha. He ain’t even the Head Butler in Charge, but shol was the highlight. P.S. Yesterday 7-11 so wrong, it’s right. They heard snickers, punishment —> Hotel.

I haven’t seen those “thinspo videos” myself. But I am concerned.
My mother was very good at instilling a healthy self-esteem for her 3 daughters. We even took “self-esteem” dance classes. LOL.
I remember going thru puberty and being upset because I was too thin, or my nose and lips were too big, and having braces. My mother told me something then that changed the view of myself forever. Essentially she told me sooner I accept myself the way I am, flaws and all, the better off I’d be. No use crying over things you can’t change, so embrace it and make it work for you.
Life got so much easier and carefree for me after that.

under 100? no. but certainly in the 125-145 range … depending on height. i def. got more attention at 140 than i do at 175 (i’m 5’7”).
mind you, i’m okay with my weight, although i wish my tummy would magically become flat and non jiggly, but i’m honest about the fact that if i were slimmer, i’d probably have a roster of dudes right now.
my ideal dude? talk and slim. i like a swimmer / former b-baller kind of build with manly soft muscles. min. height 5’11” swooning my FB fits the bill… now if he weren’t so trifling in other ways …

Angie, sad to say, but I couldn’t date a woman that didn’t do SOMETHING to stay active. Even thin ladies that only diet have no tone to them and look like just mannaquins that hold their clothes up. It’s harsh, yes, but I need a woman that at least SHARES that lifestyle. I expect myself to do everything I can to keep myself attractive to my partner, whatever that may be (unless she gets off on fatties). It’s different lifestyles for different folks, but that’s just my take. Better health breeds better self image, breeds confidence, breeds sexuality and confidence. I include myself in that equation, too. If I just sit on my behind and say “Love me the way I am…even if I get FAT” shows little get up and go to me. In other words…laziness. But that’s just me.

mytwocents I go on how I look in the mirror. I know a guy says thick with good intentions..but as I said having every girl who is fat calling herself that has turned into an ugly word for me just curvy voluptious. I the words were initially used to describe the hourglass figure but has been used and abused to the point of total insanity. Like I hard these really bug girls say that they wer curvy…but fat rolls do not count as curves! I do not think Monique is curvy, thick, voluptious, etc….I think she is fat. That booty is not round, it is wide and flat. If you got more gut than butt, ummmmm that is fat. So I think that is why I hate those words so much.
Raqi oh Lord how could I forget Jason Taylor? That is man ia fine..nice and big. OOH fan me!* I follwed his career on the Dolphins…although not fan of them…but of his…OH YES! LOL

Good Morning all BLOW is in the BUILDING SNITCHES!!
I agree….Kym @ 11:29. I completely agree. It’s all in the way you keep yourself UP. Any woman at any size can be hot. Be it a 2 or 14. Honestly being and living in the south most women here are a 12 or 14. So I don’t see where is the enormous picks of 2’s or 4’s in ATLANTA. I think ppl have to expect and appreciate who they are. Yeah work it out and cut back. Trust me you will feel and eventually look better.
More importantly trying to snag the one. It’s gonna have to be more than your body! I have seen Ms. Hourglass get passed up and tossed up like spinach salad because she has NO BRAINS and sitting there wondering why she is just a JUMPOFF…LOL. Then I have seen women who have excellent mates and they are ALWAYS ghetto, bad body and getting the works. Put on pedestals by their men.
So Thirdwheel I don’t know what you are talking about. You better have you’re mind right if you want a THOROUGHBRED Man. Initially, attraction is the first thing but the connection and your mind decide if you are worth being wifed- in. I think women of all sizes can be very attractive….The slim chicks be rockin it….and the thick fluffy chicks too.. If you asked EVERY woman on this blog..PHYSICALLY what we would want our men to look like. Every one of us would have a different view. Ppl are like ice cream…everyone does not like the same flavor. I hate chocolate….but love strawberry!
