The Tuesday Countdown

Jeff Schultz

10: Like I said: North Carolina-Memphis-UCLA-Davidson.

9: So if I understand this correctly: If I’m an 18-year-old blonde female from Gwinnett County and I rob a bank, there’s probably only a 50-50 chance I’m going to have to go to jail. Sure. Seems fair.

8: I read four NFL mock drafts the other day and three of them had the Falcons taking quarterback Matt Ryan. Look, I realize no team has a greater quarterback need than the maligned local franchise. But a general manager (Thomas Dimitroff) who came from the New England Patriots (Tom Brady, sixth round, 199th overall) is not going to spend the third pick in the draft on a quarterback, let alone one who’s not considered a lock for success.

7: Hunch: The Falcons will take a quarterback no earlier than late in round two. Before then, they’ll take linemen for both sides of the ball.

6: Atlanta defense attorney/agent Manny Arora is having a hard time creating a market for Adam “PacMan” Jones. The good news: Jones will have no problem getting his next signing bonus in $1 bills.

5: If the NBA playoffs opened today, the Hawks would lose to the Celtics.

4: I think the Braves have a pretty good shot to get back to the playoffs. But somebody apparently doesn’t share in local optimism. According to BetUS.com, Atlanta is 28-1 to win the World Series, which ranks only 13th among all teams and seventh among National League clubs. The top dozen: Yankees and Red Sox (9-2 each), Tigers (11-2), Mets (11-2), Angels (10-1), Indians (12-1), Dodgers (14-1), Cubs (15-1), Phillies (16-1), Diamondbacks and Mariners (20-1) and Rockies (25-1).

3: Leftover from a chat with Hank Aaron on baseball’s opener in Tokyo: “I’ve probably been there five or six times but I really don’t like traveling that far. You’re sitting in that little seat on the plane and you can’t go anywhere or do anything. The first time I was in Japan was for the home run derby with Sadaharu Oh. I just remember traveling all day and night. Then I got there and I realize I didn’t have my bats. So I had to use one of the bats from a Mets player [the team was there for an exhibition]. I got of the plane, went to the hotel for a short time and then went to a press conference. I’ve never seen so many cameras in my life. There must’ve been 2,000 or 3,000 cameras there. Then we went right from there to the ballpark and participated in the home run derby. I was completely drained. I was out of it.”

2: Tampa Bay is four points behind the Thrashers with two games in hand. Why should you care? Because if the Lightning pass the Thrashers, Don Waddell’s team officially will go from first-to-worst. (Scheduling note: The two play each other April 5 in the finale.)

  1. The baseball players union is hinting at collusion because nobody’s signing Barry Bonds. Let’s see. He’s old and can’t play in the outfield. He can DH but is universally hated by teammates and general managers don’t like what he does to a team’s chemistry. He’s under indictment for perjury (four counts) and obstruction of justice (one count). The charges carry a maximum of 30 years in jail. The trial may start during the season. Just guessing here: teams aren’t colluding, they’re just smart.

JOE FLACCO-Q-BACK. He’s the real deal in the 2nd round. Atlanta won’t be sorry. OT first pick. DT second pick in 1st round. Falcons will be flying again in three years.

please, please, please take Dorsey, then offensive line or QB. we have to plug the biggest hole in the ship before we need a driver. when you can have a dominant nose tackle the whole rest of the team benefits.

Watching ESPN while on lunch, the great Mel Diaper also predicted the Flacons taking Ryan in his moch draft. Just more proof that moch drafts, like most of ESPN these days are a waste of time.

D I am with you…Get a big lineman I say. Either O-line or D-line would make me happy. Let the new GM make that call. My guess would be D-line but Michigans’ Long on the left side sure would look good also. QB in the 3rd round and lets start practice.

Hey Schultzi,

You promise me that the Hawks will get to the playoffs and I’ll take that lose to the Celtics. After all, Alanta would just be one of about three eastern teams to lose to the Celtics on their way to being beaten in the finals by somebody from the west…

As bad as we need either Dorsey or J Long in the 1st — The reverse in the 2nd round, a 2nd Round CB, another DT in Rd 2, I will say that having watched Matt Ryan for 3 years, I am convinced he is the next Favre — he has the magic that you cant coach…

We all will hate watching Ryan light up the league for 10-15 years passing on him…

However, Erik Ainge is a good alternative in Rd 3 and load-up on biguns in Rd 1,2…

I agree plug the biggest hole… However, I am thinking the biggest hole is the o-line. Though the middle of the d-line is bad, Our D was not the worst part of our game. A good O-line lets us cultivate a decent QB and develop a running game. This hopefully will let the D stay fresh.

“Cullpepper”? NO!!!!!!!!!!

The last thing we need taking snaps is another double digit IQ black male wearing earrings gazing up into the stands looking for a female to mate with and reproduce another illegitimate offspring. Been there done that!

Get a middle line backer if there is a good one. no more Jordan beck’s please. we could draft all linemen and it could do nothing but help this team. This how you win a lot of game fans! Georgia Tech has a good one hope he stay at home! A good front seven can win a lot of games on defense. Remember the last Falcon super still hold the record with 129 point in a season!

I dont like anybody available at 3. Jake Long is projected at RIGHT tackle, Ryan wont play for anybody this year, and Dorsey and Ellis have durability concerns.

I say work a deal with the Jets who really want Mcfadden, take Sedric Ellis at # 6 and add in a 4th or 5th round pick from the Jets. Ellis is the best D-lineman. I really want Leodis!

I wonder if after the draft will we still consider a talent evaluator from New England makes a good GM for Atlanta? Secondly, do will still consider the patriots a character team when cheating is involved? Then again, maybe we only use character as a measuring stick when it comes to certain athletes that play or played in Atlanta.

take OT Jake Long in the first round, then trever laws, in the second, then dan conner in the second, then either Henne, Brohm, Flacco, or David-Booty. this way, the falcons will fill all of their holes. THen take JerMichael Finnley (TE from texas) in the fourth. In the third, the Falcons should take either a DB or DT or a receiver.

By Sam Maister

March 25, 2008 4:16 PM | Link to this

Here are the Falcons first 6 picks: 1) OT Jake Long (Michigan) 2) LB Dan Conner (Penn State) 3) DT Trevor Laws (Notre Dame) 4) QB (all of them are the same) 5) Either a DB, DT, or WR 6) TE JerMichael Finley (Texas)

By Fred

Jake Long at #3 if he’s there, otherwise Dorsey. I just really hope Miami takes Ryan so if he turns out to be a HOF’er, it won’t be because we passed on him.

Wouldn’t be disappointed with Dorsey over Long either as there are a few more quality OL that would still be there in 2nd round. If Flacco is still there at 48 or whatever our last pick is, GET HIM!!!

By Mike

March 25, 2008 4:20 PM | Link to this

For once, I agree with Schultz. Ryan is simply not worthy of a #3 pick. There is not much separation between Ryan, Brohm, Woodson, Flacco, and Henne. Go DL first and OL second, then use the Raiders’ pick for Flacco or Henne. Its not rocket science.

Hey Y’all:

Here we go again with a local sports writer talking negatively about our local teams during their run for the playoff. He is even prdicting if they get in they will lose to the Celtics.

We in Atlanta do not need this type of talk. We need to talk optimisticly about our chances of getting in the playoff and winning and upsetting a lot of teams. This young Hawks team is just developing with the addition of Mike Bibby at point guard. We have not seen nothing yet. And that is the uniqueness of getting in this playoof. Once the Hawks are in anything can happen with this young fun bunch now. This negative pessimistic talk by Schultz talking about if we make the playoff we will lose to the Celtics represents his defeatist attitude in sports. I would love to pla this guy in anything. All I have to do is talk a little trash, shove him around a bit and he would probably quit playing. this guys sounds like a LOSER and not a Fighter. We in Atlanta are FIGHTERS and we do not need WEAk local sport writers trying to convince us that we are weak and we have weak teams because their psychological make up is that of a LOSER. LET”S GET RID OF THESE TYPE OF SPORTS WRITERS WHO WRITE OUR LOCAL SPORTS TEAMS OFF BRFORE THEY EVEN GET STARTED. As I stated in previous blogs, we need a change at the AJC regarding our local sports columnist. And Schultz is one that needs to go. I hope to say one day to him , “SEE YA LATER, LOSER!!!!!!!!!!

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! This is a SECRET from a POSITIVE THINKING LOCAL SPORTS FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! TELL EVERYBODY!!!!!

SEE YOU AT PHILLIPS ARENA.

Anybody who knows football knows you have to give the QB time to throw. I don’t care if you have Johnny U. back there, if he’s not protected he can’t win. Get an O-line and a D-line and get a QB later in the draft. We’ve got enough talent at QB now to move the team down the field, like we saw in the Seattle game.

By Orlando

March 25, 2008 4:36 PM | Link to this

It’s really not about character as much as it is about skin color at the QB position, it’s obvious most people in Atlanta still can’t handle it, what a shame.

The reason all of these “experts” are picking Ryan at 3 to Atlanta is because they have no concept of what Atlanta is doing, which is to build a TEAM. Even after Dimitroff said that they wouldn’t draft a QB first until they solidified the lines proves these guys know nothing. They just hope that Atlanta does draft a DL so they can talk smack about the franchise not getting a QB in the first round again.

The GM believes (and I agree) that you should get strong up the middle first. That will be our focus not only for this year, but if the PLAYERS are there, next year as well. We are a forgiving society (everybody except Larry) so don’t be surprised to see #7 line up behind that strong OL if we do not have a superstar QB in place when he is released. Let’s remember that he went to jail for dog fighting and lying, not be being a idiot like Larry.

Swap first round picks with Oakland.

At #3 they select Darrin McFadden.

They give us OL Robert Gallery & the #4 pick, which we use to draft Glenn Dorsey or Jake Long.

This would fill two HUGE holes.

Don’t draft anyone that doesn’t block of tackle in the next two drafts. Given the hit and mostly miss of this franchise for the past 40+ years, take a little time and do it right.

If the Thrashers face the Bolts for 28-30th place in the league, Atlanta doesn’t even “guarantee” itself anything by losing that game. It’s a lottery draft. And the Thrashers could pick as far back as 5th, if the anger the hockey gods by retaining Don Waddell as GM.

If Atlanta wins that game, and Tampa Bay winds up 29th or 30th, then wins the lottery draft, it’ll be one of the hollowest victories in Thrashers franchise history. Okayyy, I know. Just because Atlanta wins the finale vs. TB, it doesn’t mean the Thrashers can’t still WIN the draft lottery. I realize that.

In fact, in 2001, Tampa Bay finished beneath the Thrashers and LOST the draft lottery to Atlanta. Atlanta selected Ilya Kovalchuk, 1st overall. But the Lightning won the Cup in 2004. Go figure!!

Qb’s that have gotten away from the Falcons…Montana, Favre, Marino, Brady, etc…The point is it’s hard to win a war without a General. That said the Falcons need to do both get a General and get some troops. That is why you pay big bucks for the management to decide what to do and then hold them accountable down the road. Personally, the Falcons need 3 QB’s who can play in the NFL and lead the team to wins. In the past we’ve only had one and could’nt afford any injuries, that has to change to be competitive.

We get only a sec and next years 5 rd. pk for a first rd talent! I am a die-hard Falcons fan, but this seems like something out of the past, which ain’t good! I could stomach it if we had got another 1st out of the deal because if we’d use it on linemen we don’t need that good of D-backs if our front seven is getting pass rush or the offense is sustaining drives. But given we don’t have either one, I don’t like this move for the long term.

As for you, “Najeh Daven Poop for Brains,” I’m not “racist,” I just believe black men should act like real men like a Tiger Woods or Bryant Gumble, not a bunch of apish thugs like the animals who mercilessly killed two innocent college students at Auburn and UNC just for a few bucks they were two sorry and lazy to earn! With the rise of Gholston, Jake Long will hopefully slide to us. Jake Long will give us a big tandem on the left side of our line (Jake Long - 6’7” 315/ Justin Blalock - 6’3” 325) and I think acquiring Jake Long will help Justin Blalock in pass protection. There are plenty of good NT that might fall out of the first round due to a deep draft class. We can get a quarterback, nose tackle/interior pass rusher, and middle linebacker in the second round. With our third round pick, we should go get a safety or a nose tackle. Our fourth pick should be used to bring another safety to compete with either D. Stone or J. Williams. Our remaining picks should be used for depth along the offensive line.

Why does everyone point out how bad the Thrashers are but are up on the Hawks, simply because the Hawks may squeak into the playoffs? The Thrashers are 7 games under .500. The Hawks are 9 games under .500. So which team is really worse? Just because the Eastern conference of the NBA is so bad, it doesn’t make the Hawks any better. Just think it is funny how people can think the Hawks are “winning”, when they are really worse than the Thrashers.

I just hope and pray the Falcons take Dorsey at 3, Ryan is more a product of 8 months of hype by the nedia than anything else. I suppose he might I say might be the best QB available, but after watching he and Henne at Michigan, Henne is head over heals the best guy and he will be available at the top of round 2. WHERES MY BLOG

By teej

March 25, 2008 11:21 PM | Link to this

Why does it always seem that in every blog some black or white idiot starts spouting off about something other than what the blog is supposed to be about. You people that think anyone is better at a certain position or is a better person b/c of their skin color are obviously delusional. I guess you must have a need to talk about the color of your skin or that of others b/c you lack the intellect to speak intellegently about the sport for which the blog is supposed to be about. Now can we please continue to talk about the Falcons. I personally happen to enjoy hearing the opinions of people who are fans and like talking about their home team. Thanks.

I just wish that our Atlanta sports frachises would play it smart by not being clever. Anyone watch the Hawks game tonight. We need veteran leadership bad! We just have too many young guys that don’t know how to finish games. I like Bibby and everything but Chris Paul is taking his team to another level. I can’t help but wonder what we’d look like if he was on our squad. THE GUY IS NOTHING SHORT OF PHENOMENAL!

As for my beloved Falcons. I think we should move Milloy to the FS and put Jimmy Williams at the SS. He’s physical and has enough cover skills to be solid there I think. We should take advantage of Lawyer’s leadership capabilities to point the young guys in the secondary in the right direction. We should draft a FS late in the 2nd and also a linebacker we need some depth at those positions too. So, I break it down like this we should go 1st OL, 2nd DL,LB,FS, 3rd QB, 4th OL, 5th CB, 6th K, and 7th WR.

WIll: maybe u should move to Alabama since u hate Ga so much. At least then youll just have 2 football teams to b*** about when things go bad instead of confusing your little brain with so many teams to choose from like GA has!

They’re not going to draft ANY QBs this year because of the trade they will make with the Browns for Brady Quinn. So eveyone needs to get over these predictions of when it’s going to happen. Dimitroff and Romeo Crennel are past associates and will help make the deal happen. If you think I’m crazy then look at how many picks the Falcons have and how many the Browns have this year. Uh Huh! Told you!!!!

Edgar, frankly, I could go for a trade for a veteran QB. As long as we don’t take one with our first pick, a second round QB wouldn’t be too bad either. There’s just not enough of a drop-off in QB talent from the 1st to the 2nd round to justify ignoring our O-line & D-line deficiencies with the top pick/picks.

NEW PLAN! Falcons trade 34th overall pick and fourth rounder to dallas for the 28th overall pick (used to select qb brian brohm
