August 30: Changes in local anchors at WABE-FM//New mid-morning host at WGST

With Bruce Dortin’s death, WABE-FM has done some shuffling. Here’s the press release:

John Lemley and Wanda Yang Temko Take on New Roles at WABE 90.1 FM, Atlanta’s NPR Station

On Tuesday, September 6, WABE 90.1 FM listeners will hear some familiar voices at new times: John Lemley and host Wanda Yang Temko are taking on new roles. Lemley – WABE assistant program director and host of Afternoon Classics, 90.1FM’s classical music programming on weekday afternoons – will be heard as All Things Considered’s local anchor. Temko will step in to host Afternoon Classics. (Lemley will continue to host Bach’s Lunch weekdays from Noon until 1.) WABE 90.1 FM is Atlanta’s NPR station, and is part of the Public Broadcasting Atlanta family, which also includes PBA30, Atlanta’s PBS station.

“Both John and Wanda are extremely talented individuals, and we’re delighted to introduce them to new audiences” said WABE 90.1 FM Vice-President and Station Manager Earl Johnson. “Wanda’s background, which includes a doctorate in voice performance, allows her to draw on a great base of information about music. Atlantans have been listening to John since 1997, and are well aware of the range and diversity of his knowledge; we believe he’ll be a terrific addition to our All Things Considered team.”

Bach’s Lunch airs from Noon – 1 PM; Afternoon Classics airs from 1 – 3 PM, and All Things Considered airs from 4 – 6:30 PM weekdays on WABE 90.1 FM.

And a guy named Denny Schaffer is taking over for what was Glenn Beck’s spot from 9 to noon on WGST (and very briefly, the Regular Guys). The spot has been open for four months. Clearly, there were contract issues. Schaffer is Beck’s primary sub to boot. Here’s the press release:

Clear Channel Radio Names Denny Schaffer Late Morning Host for WGST-AM

Atlanta, Georgia. August 30, 2005 – Clear Channel Radio today named Denny Schaffer as host of the Late Morning show, 8AM-Noon, on Braves Radio 640 GST. Schaffer joins WGST from sister station WSPD, in Toledo, Ohio.

Through his 25 years experience in radio, Schaffer has brought ratings dominance in virtually every community he has served. Toledo has been his home since 1993 where he hosted the highly rated “Breakfast Club on 92.5 KISS-FM for 10 years. Schaffer has since provided his skills in the talk radio arena, voicing afternoons on 1370 WSPD. While at WSPD, he grew the coveted Men 25-54 demographic from a 2.2 share to a 12.3. Schaffer is also the #1 Fill-In Host for the nationally syndicated Glenn Beck Show, and will continue to do so from his new home at Braves Radio 640 GST in Atlanta.

“Denny’s energy and drive are boundless and his talent is considerable, said Mike Wheeler, Regional V-P for Programming. “We’re thrilled that Denny has chosen to continue his career at WGST.

“I have a burning desire to test and challenge myself at the next level. WGST gives me that opportunity and I am so thankful and feel so blessed to be part of the team….and besides shoveling snow is overrated, commented Schaffer.

Denny Schaffer brings his love for God, Family, and Country to Clear Channel Atlanta beginning October 3rd.

I’m really surprised Elle didn’t come with the same MO as she had with the Stews. I know on the AOK side, she has to be str8 faced, but I’m ready to hear the real Elle we’re used too.

I heard the Stews say that Elle ended up with them because a friend or associate of hers couldn’t do the time slot. LOL. Work it Elle.

Though I’m saddened to hear of Dortin’s death, and my sympathies to his family, it was time for him to get out of broadcasting.

It became almost a game for me to wait for his inevitable flubs on my ride home.

I worked with Elle at 790, she got the job, because of her looks, but she kept the job, because of her talent. I no longer work there, but I can say, they definitely didn’t want her to go. I’m telling you to keep an eye on her. Probably the most wellrounded talent I’ve seen in a 22 year old. Keep up the good work Elle!

What?! Kevin Wall has been doing mornings for a few months now, and WGST gives the spot to Denny Schaffer? I like Schaffer, but he hasn’t been on down here in a while. Good luck to both gentlemen-and the next program director.
