Mako's

THINK MAXIM MAGAZINE writ large. This musty beer-and-babe-drenched bar embraces the Spring Break/Mardi Gras oeuvre with pure sensory overload. Sirens go off, flurries of napkins are shot through the air, women dance suggestively on tabletops. Topless male bartenders strut their stuff while scantily clad beer gals give the guys a rush. A "world famous" Mako's swing girl literally swings at the entrance (minus the nudity). The ledges are popular spots for ladies to shake their booties while the guys admire the scenery from the dance floor below. Dr. John, resident DJ and entertainment marketing guy, projects goofball energy, yelping id-style comments like, "I want some girl-on-girl kissing!" and "Who's horny out there tonight?"
PRICE: Cover is usually $5 on weekends. No velvet rope or attitude at the door.
TUNES: DJ Dr. John successfully sandwiches Nirvana and Def Leppard with Mystikal and 50 Cent. On a recent Saturday night, he kept the place packed and revved right up to 3 a.m. closing time, when he wished the crowd off with Roy Rogers' "Happy Trails."
SCENE: Barely-legal-to-drink frat boys and sorority girls mingle with bachelorette groups and budget-minded partygoers seeking a (relatively) cheap beer and lots of jiggle without strip-club prices. Despite the arrival of Coyote Ugly around the corner and a downturn in business exacerbated by fewer midweek conventioneers, Mako's still rocks hard, especially on weekends.
THE 411: 3065 Peachtree Road N.E., Buckhead. 404-846-8096.
