Marlow's Pomegranate MartiniPublished on: 04/21/2005
POM AT MARLOW'S
The new Marlow's Tavern (2355 Cumberland Parkway, Vinings) opens for business on Monday. With it comes a revamped version of the chain's Pomegranate Martini. Its bartenders used to use 3 Vodka in the recipe, but Smirnoff cranberry vodka now provides the flavor they were looking for. DeKuyper Pucker Grape schnapps and, of course, POM pomegranate juice play their respective parts.

A PEACH OF A DRINK
The fried peach pies at the Varsity are tempting enough. Now Stoli has to go and push a Peach Cobbler cocktail. But to our surprise, the recipe's not Southern bred. Michael Waterhouse of New York's Dylan Prime takes the credit. Mix 1 ounce of Stoli Persik vodka with 1/2 ounce heavy cream, 1/4 ounce of Hiram Walker peach schnapps and splashes of butterscotch schnapps and Southern Comfort. It's garnished with an orange twist and poured into a 'tini glass with a cinnamon and sugar rim.
A DATE WITH GIGI
The Ruby Red Gigi sounds like the name of a French stripper. But it's actually a drink crafted by Mark Showronek at One Midtown Kitchen (559 Dutch Valley Road, Midtown). The key ingredient is Charbay, a brand of heavily fruit-infused vodkas that hail from Napa Valley. One-and-a-half ounces of Charbay's grapefruit flavor is mixed with 3 ounces of guava nectar and a splash of tonic water. The Gigi stands for the grapefruit and the guava — get it? With our depleted brain cells, it took us a few minutes to catch that one, too.
RED HOT COUNTRY
Country music stars Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley and Terri Clark call Philips Arena home Friday night for their Atlanta stop on the "Two Hats and a Redhead Tour." In need of a preconcert warm up? The Webtender site (www.webtender.com) has a theme-worthy shot dubbed the Red Hot. It just takes 1 ounce each of Goldschlager and Jägermeister. According to the site, it's suppose to taste just like red-hot candy. Just don't call us if it doesn't quite work.
RIDE 'EM COWBOY
If you don't like red hots, there's another countrified option. Bombay Sapphire gin (www.bombaysapphire.com) suggests the Cowboy Martini. Three shots of gin, 1/2 shot of sugar syrup, 8 fresh mint leaves and 4 drops of orange bitters are all shaken together on ice. Do it hard so the ice chops up the mint. Next, pour through a fine gauze strainer into a glass. Bombay says adhere to the recipe, or it can taste rather nasty.
CHOCOLATE-COVERED BULL
The Red Bull-meets-alcohol fad may have died down a bit, but its horns are still at attention. If you think you've tried them all, DeKuyper schnapps (www.dekuyper.com) may have some uncharted territory. The Choco Bull is made of its crème de cacao, Red Bull, Vox vodka and a splash of grenadine. The Red Bull goes into a rocks glass, while the vodka and cacao mingle in a shot glass. The shot glass is then poured into the Red Bull, followed by a splash of grenadine.
